Wright’s drawings and paintings contemplate the romantic, evoking strong emotion as a source of aesthetic experience and placing emphasis on trepidation, horror, and awe. In his work, one can see inspirations from varied sources including art history (Caspar David Friedrich and Francisco Goya), literature (William Faulkner and Flannery O’Connor), and music (Neil Young). Mitchell Wright’s latest paintings were inspired by William Faulkner’s short story, Barn Burning. Relating this text to his own personal history, Wright creates images to understand how one’s sense of things is guided by their past and the importance of understanding when this is happening. This subject matter of buildings subsumed by flames has a particularly haunting and poignant read in the context of recent Santa Barbara fires and the tragedies that ensued.
Wright was born in Winona, Mississippi (1976). Solo exhibitions include Wishful Thinking, LAS Gallery, Phoenix, AZ (2008); You, Me., White Columns, New York, NY (2006); and Daydreaming is Squeezing Night Into Day, Ewing Gallery of Art and Architecture, University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN. In addition, Wright has participated in group shows such as The Merits of Silence, Gallery Min Min, Tokyo, JP (2008); The Object Direct, Heskin Contemporary, New York, NY (2008); Sonotube, Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum, Santa Barbara, CA (2007).
This exhibition has been made possible in part by the generous support of
the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Special thanks to Brush & Associates, Santa Barbara, CA; The Presidio Motel, Santa Barbara, CA; and Wayne McCall and Associates, Santa Barbara, CA.

This exhibition will feature performance-based video works that explore the notion of the absurd. Based loosely on non sequitur Dadaist techniques and surrealist-inspired writings, this exhibition explores absurdity in its many meanings. In many instances, these artists employ theatrical techniques by utilizing crudely-made props, costumes, and flimsy sets. By engaging dark and oftentimes ironic humor in absurd or impossible scenarios, these artists expose the underlying brutality, dehumanization, fears and taboos of American society.

108 Sun Salutations in 2 hours!! Some people think it's impossible. Others think it's just weird. Whatever you might think, yogis and fitness lovers of the central coast can find out for themselves this New Year's Day as the Yogathon--108 Sun Salutations in Two Hours--returns to the Morro Bay Veteran's Hall at 1:30 p.m.
A sun salutation is a series of yoga moves done repeatedly, to promote physical health and in celebration of the return of the longer days ahead. . "It's AWESOME," is a commonly heard response to the question: what is this you're doing? . "I didn't think I could do it," said one participant from last year, "but the energy of the group inspires you and it was over before I knew it, and I was ready to keep going!"
The event is a by-donation fundraiser for Pacific Wildlife Care, who's hotline 543-WILD helps rehabilitate thousands of injured wild animals annually be re-released into our local environment. This all-volunteer organization is located in Morro Bay and relies solely on contributions to cover food and medical costs. Yogathon participants are asked to bring a donation to Pacific Wildlife Care or have sponsors contribute a dime or a quarter for each sun salutation they do, and help raise money for the cause that way. All the information about the Yogathon and the fundraiser can be found at www.yogawave.us (which has a printable flier of the sun salutation sequence and a fundraiser form) and information about Pacific Wildlife Care at www.pacificwildlifecare.org
The Morro Bay Veteran’s Hall is located at 209 Surf Street, off Main Street in Morro Bay, and yoga mats are provided. For more information, please contact Jenny at (805) 234-7279 or jennyb.yogawave@gmail.com. The event will begin at 1:30 p.m. and last until 3:30 p.m on New Year's Day, Friday, January 1st, 2010. The Wheel of Life – A Concise Overview of the Interdependence of all Things. One of the World’s first Western Buddhist Incarnates explores the rich symbolism of the Buddha’s Wheel of Life, a graphic depiction of the cycle of confused existence.
Central to the Buddha’s teachings are his descriptions of the interdependence of all things. Depicted graphically as the Wheel of Life, the twelve links of causality, the six realms and the causes for suffering are described as a circular, dynamic process that entraps us unknowingly in the confusion of self-centered thinking. The Wheel of Life symbolizes impermanence. Understanding the rich symbolism of this depiction of confused existence shows the path towards freeing our minds to completely overcome suffering and its causes.
Trinlay Tulku Rinpoche was born of French and American parents in 1975. At thirteen months, His Holiness the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa and the Venerable Kalu Rinpoche recognized him as the reincarnation of an important Buddhist teacher. At age 2 he began the traditional Tulku training. During his spiritual schooling, Trinlay Rinpoche received many transmissions and Buddhist instructions from highly qualified teachers. He went on to study, among other places, at the Sorbonne University. Trinlay Rinpoche, fluent in English, French and Tibetan, is a charismatic speaker, and has taught in Buddhist centers and universities throughout the world.

Born in Switzerland to French and American parents, Trinlay Tulku ("Incarnate") Rinpoche ("Precious One") was recognized as the reincarnation of an important Buddhist teacher in 1976, at the age of thirteen months. Those recognizing him were His Holiness The 16th Gyalwa Karmapa, spiritual leader of one of the four major lineages of Tibetan Buddhism, and the Venerable Kalu Rinpoche, himself an incarnate. On Monday, January 4, from 7 to 9 p.m., Bodhi Path Buddhist Center Santa Barbara presents one of the world's first Western Buddhist incarnates, Trinlay Tulku Rinpoche, to the community as he gives a talk, The Wheel of Life – A Concise Overview of the Interdependence of All Things.
Trinlay Tulku Rinpoche was born in Switzerland of French and American parents in 1975. After being recognized as a "Tulku" or "incarnate", Trinlay began the traditional Tulku training under the guidance of Kalu Rinpoche in India. He continued his Buddhist studies in Europe while concurrently beginning a basic western education after completeing his Tulku training. Trinlay went on to study, among other places, at the Sorbonne University, the School of Oriental Languages, and the Karmapa International Buddhist Institute.
Trinlay Tulku Rinpoche’s January 4th talk will focus on the symbolism used in The Wheel of Life, a graphic depiction of the cycle of confused existence. Understanding the rich symbolism of this depiction illuminates the path toward freeing the mind to completely overcome suffering and its causes.
The Wheel of Life – A Concise Overview of the Interdependence of All Things will be given at the Bodhi Path Buddhist Center of Santa Barbara, 30 W. Mission St. #7, from 7 – 9 p. m. on Monday, January 4. Suggested donation: $20. For more information please call 805-252-6137 or visit www.bodhipath.org/sb/.

SANTA LUCIA SCHOOL CELEBRATES 25TH ANNIVERSARY WITH STUDENT ART EXHIBITION.
Current students and alumni are gathering their favorite art pieces made at Santa Lucia School over the last 25 years for an exhibit at the Art Studios on the Park in Paso Robles. This art exhibition, celebrating Santa Lucia’s 25th anniversary, will take place January 7th – 10th, with a reception Saturday, January 9th from 3 – 6pm. The Studios is open Thursday from 12 – 6pm; Friday and Saturday from 12 – 9pm; and Sunday 1 – 6pm.
A broad search of art took place this fall with past and present students submitting up to three of their favorite pieces in various media including paintings, drawings, ceramics and textiles for the multi-media art display. This ambitious retrospective will feature these individual pieces accompanied by written commentaries by the artists reflecting on their inspiration and memories associated with the creation of the work. Some of the pieces were group projects.
Alumni and parents will be available during the show to provide further information on Santa Lucia School. Examples of Santa Lucia’s unique educational philosophy will be demonstrated through the student’s art as well as information about their “give back to the community” programs.
Art has been and remains an area of great emphasis for the school, being utilized at all grade levels to foster development of each child’s natural imagination and to encourage the exploration of new realities and solutions to open-ended questions through engagement in creativity and self-expression.
Studios on the Park was founded in December of 2007 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing a creative, educational, and transformational experience to enhance understanding and appreciation of the visual arts. Studios on the Park realizes its commitment by making the creative process available to the public.

One of the great treasures of the Buddha’s teaching, called “Dependent Origination”, at once provides the key to the correct view of reality and the path toward breaking through the entrapment of our self-centered thinking. Throughout January and February, 2010, Bodhi Path Buddhist Center Santa Barbara invites the entire community to attend a series of talks entitled Dependent Origination – An In-Depth Study of the Interdependence of Causes and Conditions at the center, 30 West Mission #7. Bart Mendel, a Buddhist practitioner and teacher for over 30 years and Santa Barbara resident, will conduct the series.
Topics in this lecture series include The Laws of Karma, Causes and Conditions, The Twelve Links of Causality, and Overcoming Craving & Grasping. Through precise explanation of the terms and everyday examples, this series will explore how to work with the profound notion of Interdependence in our own lives.
Upon meeting his first Buddhist teacher Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche (Precious One), among the first Rinpoches to teach in the West, in 1976, Bart Mendel embarked on an intense path of practice and study. Mendel served as Resident Director of Shambhala Training, the international seat of Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche's activity in North America, where he resided from 1986 to 1995.
Mendel became a student of Shamar Rinpoche, international spiritual head of Bodhi Path Buddhist Centers, in 1995. In 1997, Mendel accepted an invitation from Shamar Rinpoche to open Bodhi Path Buddhist Center Santa Barbara, where he served as Resident Teacher for over ten years. Mendel serves on the Board of Directors for Siddhartha Foundation International, and oversees its project to build a public meditation center on the Central Coast.
The lecture series will be given at Bodhi Path Buddhist Center Santa Barbara, 30 W. Mission St. #7, from 7 – 9pm on six Thursdays, January 7, 21, 28 and February 4, 11, 18. Suggested donation: $15/lecture. For information please call 805-252-6137.

Current students and alumni are gathering their favorite art pieces made at Santa Lucia School over the last 25 years for an exhibit at the Art Studios on the Park in Paso Robles. This exhibit celebrating Santa Lucia's 25th anniversary will take place January 7th-10th, with a reception Saturday, January 9 from 3pm to 6pm. The Studios is open Thursday from 12pm to 6pm; Friday and Saturday from 12pm to 9pm; and Sunday 2pm to 6pm.
Examples of Santa Lucia's unique educational philosophy will be demonstrated through the student's art as well as information about their "give back to the community" programs.
Art has been and remains an area of great emphasis for the school, being utilized at all grade levels to foster development of each child's natural imagination and to encourage the exploration of new realities and solutions to open-ended questions through engagement in creativity and self-expression.
Call Santa Lucia School for further information at 434-2217 or visit www.santaluciaschool.org. Santa Lucia School is a private school for students in grades 1-8. Our staff of 6 serves a total enrollment of 48 students, in three mixed-age classrooms of approximately 16 students each. The school works to promote core values of critical thinking, imagination, cooperation, global awareness, self-esteem, conflict resolution and respect for the natural world.

“Understanding the Relationship between Thoughts, Emotions and True Happiness in Body and Mind”
With Dharma Teacher Dawa Tarchin Phillips
How does your mind work and manifest thoughts, feelings and your perceptions? What is the underlying reality of your being? Every moment of every day you are involved in, and dealing with the manifestations of your body and the experiences and expressions of your mind. They make up who you are and what you identify with most intimately. As you go through life, you experience manifold different states of physical and mental challenges in the search of well-being.
During this teaching series we will explore the Buddha’s advice on how to correctly view the reality of ones body and the productions of ones mind when our aim is to reduce suffering. Teachings based on the 5 Skandhas and 51 Mental Events.
Buddhist Dharma Teacher Dawa Tarchin Phillips completed two 3-year meditation retreats as a student of the Mahamudra meditation master Gendun Rinpoche at Dhagpo Kundreul Ling Monastery in France where he received the transmission of the Karma Kagyu Lineage. Prior to focusing on meditative practices, Dawa pursued advanced studies in the arts, a career in the entertainment industry and worked with severely ill cancer and cardiac patients. Today, he teaches throughout Europe and the US, offering guidance to those on the spiritual path and is the resident teacher of Bodhi Path Center Santa Barbara.

“Mind needs to be tamed. Thoughts should be controlled. In order to accomplish this you need to learn calm abiding meditation. There are many kinds of calm abiding practice, but the initial level is crucial to learn in order to have strong stability of concentration. First you need to know how to sit, and then in order to train the mind to concentrate, you must focus on your breath.” —Shamar Rinpoche (Spiritual Leader of Bodhi Path Buddhist Center International).
This talk by dharma teacher Lama Tsony is based on instructions from Shamar Rinpoche’s new book, The Path to Awakening, which contains his transmission of the Seven Points of Mind Training. The book constitutes Rinpoche’s synthesis of the curriculum of practice he recommends for all dharma practitioners, particularly those at Bodhi Path Buddhist Centers.
Lama Tsony’s talk will introduce the preliminaries of mind training, focusing on the methods for shamatha (Tibetan: Shi-nay) meditation as a remedy for attachment, anger, pride and ignorance. These practices are aimed at developing mind’s stability and reducing distraction and self-clinging.
Lama Tsony was a Buddhist monk for over 25 years, and completed two traditional 3-year retreats under the guidance of the great meditation master Gendun Rinpoche. For 15 years he was Abbot of Kundrel Ling Monastery in France. Since 1999 he has been teaching philosophy and meditation throughout Europe and the U.S, and is now the resident teacher at Bodhi Path Natural Bridge, VA.

Juggling Program at the Atascadero Library.
Scott Cleere, of Creative Athletics of San Luis Obispo, will present a program at the Atascadero Library called “Juggling Arts.” This event will take place on Wednesday, January 13th from 3:30-4:30 pm for 7-12 year olds. Space is limited and signups will be taken at the Main Desk for this free program.
Creative Athletics is dedicated to helping people succeed, grow and learn through the magic of play. Through school assemblies, classes and workshops like The Diablo Fest, Connections Day and World at Play, millions of students and teachers in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia have experienced the joy and passion of Creative Athletics. Plato once said, “You can learn more about a person in an hour of play than in a lifetime of conversation.” Creative Athletics puts that philosophy into action by offering unique alternative sports and games that are designed to promote confidence, teamwork, respect and laughter for everyone that is involved.
Over the past twenty years Scott’s accomplishments include world and national championship titles in footbag net and freestyle, and a Guinness record for organizing the largest circle of people playing footbag. Scott has also competed in Thailand and Malaysia with the US national Takraw team. Most recently, Scott represented the USA as a delegate at the International Cultural Games Festival in Melbourne, Australia.
Starting with footbag in 980, Creative Athletics now promotes and teaches a variety of sports and games from around the world.

The Yes Men Fix The World -
Wednesday, January 13, 2010 @ 7:30 PM & 9:30 PM, Campbell Hall.
“Outrageously entertaining…This movie is glorious testimony to the moral power of satire.” -New York Magazine.
Armed with nothing but thrift store business suits, Yes Men Andy Bichlbaum and Mike Bonanno pose as top executives of corporations they hate, fibbing their way into conferences and newsrooms to parody their corporate targets in ever more extreme ways. Beginning with a false declaration by Dow Chemical on BBC news that sends stock plummeting, they take on the biggest and baddest of businesses in this laugh riot political documentary that exposes the twisted and accidentally hilarious underworld of free-market think tanks. (Andy Bichlbaum, Mike Bonanno & Kurt Engfehr, 2009, 87 min.).

JANUARY 14, 2010.
Atascadero Lake Pavilion, 9315 Pismo Avenue, Atascadero, CA.
Please join the San Luis Obispo County Child Abuse Prevention Council and Transition-Mental Health Association to view “The Shaken Tree: Families Living with Mental Illness”, a 30-minute documentary that gives a voice to families, telling their stories of what life is like when a loved one has a chronic, persistent mental illness.
After the film presenters from Stamp-Out-Stigma, a TMHA program will share their individual experiences of living with a mental illness and the societal stigma they endure. The candid interaction with persons who have achieved a high level of recovery with their mental illness is often described as both educational and enlightening. In addition, we will learn how TMHA Family Services provides community support for families with a child with complex, mental health needs.

"21 Conscious-Breaths Retreat”
with Dharma Teacher Tsony
This three and a half day meditation intensive is based on instructions from Shamar Rinpoche’s new book, The Path to Awakening, which contains his transmission of the Seven Points of Mind Training. The book constitutes Rinpoche’s synthesis of the curriculum of practice he recommends for all dharma practitioners, particularly those at Bodhi Path Buddhist Centers.
During the three plus days, Tsony will lead us in an exploration of the preliminaries of mind training, focusing on the methods for shamatha (Tibetan: Shi-nay) meditation as a remedy for attachment, anger, pride and ignorance. These practices are aimed at developing mind’s stability and reducing distraction and self-clinging.
7 sessions:
Thursday Evening, Jan. 14, 7—9 pm
Friday, Saturday & Sunday, Jan. 15—17 9:30am—12:30pm and 2—5pm Lunch is included
Dharma Teacher Tsony was a Buddhist monk for over 25 years, Tsony completed two traditional 3-year retreats under the guidance of the great meditation master Gendun Rinpoche. For 15 years he was Abbot of Kundrel Ling Monastery in France. Since 1999 he has been teaching philosophy and meditation throughout Europe and the U.S, and is now the resident teacher at Bodhi Path Natural Bridge, VA.
Please contact Bodhi Path SLO to register for the retreat. Everyone is welcome Thursday night.

Benjamin Ball grew up in Colorado and Iowa where his mother's involvement in theatre proved influential. While studying for his degree at the Southern California Institute of Architecture, Ball logged stints at Gehry Partners and Shirdel Zago Kipnis. Upon graduation, he sought work as a set and production designer for films (including the Matrix series) as well as music videos and commercials with such influential directors as Mark Romanek and Tony Scott.
His experience ranges from work on the Disney Concert Hall and small residential commissions for boutique firms to complex medical structures and event design. In his current collaboration with Gaston Nogues, Ball is exploring the intersection of architecture, art and product design through physical modeling and the use of digital and more traditional forms of production. A major goal of his design endeavors is to create experiences; because of this, he feels "a building that is not built is not architecture."
In 2006, Ball-Nogues Studio was awarded the Best of Category distinction for Environments for their installation Maximilian's Schell by ID Magazine. Ball-Nogues is the recipient of two Los Angeles AIA Design Awards and Interior Design Magazines Best of Year Award for their installation Rip Curl Canyon.
In 2007 their installation Liquid Sky was the winner of the Museum of Modern Art / P.S.1's Young Architect's Program competition and Ball-Nogues became one three design teams who were awarded a United States Artists Target Fellowship. In 2008 their site specific installation Echoes Converge appeared at the 11th Venice Biennale of Architecture and an exhibit of their work appeared at the Beijing Biennale. The Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles will host a new installation by the team in the summer of 2009. The partners have taught design courses at SCI Arc, UCLA and USC.

Since her self-titled debut was released in 2004, Sophie Milman has become one of the hottest singers in the pop-jazz world. Sophie has been likened to Diana Krall and Norah Jones and enchants her audience with a mix of old, new and progressive tunes including covers of Paul Simon's “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover,” Joni Mitchell's “Be Cool,” and Bruce Springsteen's “I'm On Fire.” The LA Times declared, “Her sultry voice sounds like whiskey and honey. It’s obvious she is one of a kind.” Prior to the performance, the Clark Center will be hosting a Reception sponsored by Talley Vineyards for the first 200 people to arrive on the night of the show. Tickets for Sophie Milman are $35-$44 and are available by calling (805) 489-9444 or visit www.clarkcenter.org.

Remember! Celebrate! Act!
Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration and March.
The City of Paso Robles, Library & Recreation Services, is celebrating the powerful vision and message of Martin Luther King Jr. On Sunday, January 17 at 1:00 pm, the community is invited to gather at Robbins Field where Master of Ceremonies and Chief of Police, Lisa Solomon, will guide us through this brief but meaningful event. Bagpipes will open the celebration, inspirational speakers will provide a motivating message, musicians will sing, and local youth will entertain through dance, drama, and poetry their artistic interpretation of Dr. King’s noble work towards diversity. Following the presentations, we will march down Park Street to City Hall for refreshments and to watch the final performance featuring the Cal Poly Society of Black Engineers as they raise their voice through a “stomp” routine and verbal affirmations.

A new culinary program becomes a delicious offering from Lucia Mar Unified School District Adult Education beginning this January 25 and running for 16 weeks within their Adult and Community Education department.
“Basic Cooking Skills”, says Charlissa Skinner, Principal for LMUSD Adult Education, “is the first class in what LMUSD plans as a series of classes directed at chef-wannabes, young parents who want to know the basics of cooking and nutrition, along with the community at large.”
This inaugural class takes a fundamental look at key foods, kitchen tools, the most important culinary techniques and steps to eating. With two evening meetings each week, there’s plenty of classroom time to also cover nutrition and menu planning, shopping skills and making food look good on the table.
Mrs. Skinner emphasizes “We’ve looked at other cooking classes in the area and our $150 fee for 40 hours of training is an incredible bargain for such credible instruction from our local chef, Joe Seals.” The class is certainly for beginning cooks as well as for those who want to continue on into a more advanced culinary program.
LMUSD Adult Education is working with area restaurants and markets to develop a sponsorship program that will partner young students, aged 17-21, with businesses that have promised to invest in the student’s future. We are asking businesses to provide the cost of the registration fee for students they would like to send to the class and as scholarships for others interested in the Culinary Arts, who might not be able to afford the fee.
If you think you are a qualified potential student - one who is financially challenged -- and would like to know more about this avenue to a career in the restaurant business, contact Charlissa Skinner at 474-3900, cboaz-skinner@lmusd.org. You must qualify and meet strict guidelines.
If you are a restaurant or food-related business, Mrs. Skinner would love to talk with you about joining the sponsorship program.

MLK DAY OF SERVICE AT THE SANTA BARBARA PUBLIC LIBRARY.
Spend your Day of Service at our Book Re-sort Resort.
Adults, teenagers, and parents teaming with children over ten are invited to volunteer at the Central Branch of the Santa Barbara Public Library (SBPL) on the corner of Anacapa and Anapamu from 9 a.m. to 12 noon on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Monday, January 18, 2010.
The Library works best when books, DVDs, and other materials are in the right places. Use your “eagle eyes” to help review the shelves and find things that are out of order. The Library will be closed to the public for the MLK, Jr. holiday. Volunteers will work with Library staff and refreshments will be served.
As a bonus this year, the SBPL has partnered with Disney Parks and HandsOn Network to give all verified participants a free one-day admission ticket to a Walt Disney World Resort or Disneyland Resort theme park.
Contact the SBPL Volunteer Coordinator, Heather Nisen, at 805-564-5634 or hnisen@santabarbaraca.gov if you are interested in participating. Participants must pre-register for the event and attend an hour-long training on Saturday, January 9 or Thursday, January 14.

In the Face of War: Martin Luther King and the Call to Nonviolence
For more information: Rev. Caroline Hall 704-3356, 704-5826
On Monday, January 18, Central Coast Clergy and Laity for Justice will present a tribute to Martin Luther King and his commitment to and message of nonviolence. The program will be held at Congregation Beth David on Los Osos Valley Rd. and Foothill Blvd. in San Luis Obispo, and will begin at 6 :30 PM.
The purpose of the program is to highlight Dr. King’s message in light of the escalation of the war in Afghanistan. Later in his life, Dr. King saw so clearly the connections between racism, poverty and injustice and violence and war. We believe that at this moment in today’s world, Dr. King would speak out vigorously against the militarism and the wars in the Middle East, including Iraq and Afghanistan. To emphasize the connections Dr. King made between oppression and war, we will be focusing tonight not on his leadership in the struggle for civil rights, but on the application of his dream to ending the war in Afghanistan.
The program will be a multimedia presentation, utilizing videos of Dr. King, a short readers’ theatre presentation highlighting Dr. King’s words on this subject, selections from the powerful Robert Greenwald documentary Rethink Afghanistan, and music.
Code Pink, Women in Black and Mothers for Peace will all have tables with information on their organizations, and opportunity will be given for questions and dialogue.
Central Coast Clergy and Laity for Justice invite everyone to take part in this powerful evening. Participants will consider the implications of Dr. King’s fervent message of hope and peace in the face of the Afghanistan war, and explore together how they might better understand the path to peace.

Join the San Luis Obispo Art Center for the showing of Purvis of Overtown.
2006, 67 minutes.
Directed by David Raccuglia and Shaun Conrad.
After serving a prison sentence for breaking and entering, Purvis Young returned to Overtown, the Miami neighborhood of his youth. During his incarceration he had taught himself to paint, and in Overtown he began to chronicle almost obsessively its history and multicultural flavor, its streets and characters, its anecdotes of daily life, and its mythologies of survival.
Screened at over twenty film festivals including New York and Miami International Film Festivals, this award-winning documentary offers a rare glimpse into the life and work of a master painter.
SUGGESTED DONATION of $5 for member and $7 for non-members.

Community members will be contributing local knowledge to the development of the Santa Rosa Creek Watershed Management Plan funded by a grant from California Department of Fish and Game Fisheries Restoration Grant Program. Led by Greenspace—the Cambria Land Trust, the community-based voluntary Management Plan will address watershed restoration priorities for the locally threatened Steelhead trout population. Working with project partners, Greenspace will host the first public meeting January 19, 2010 at Rabobank in Cambria from 6:30-8:30pm.
Greenspace has partnered with Arroyo Grande based Central Coast Salmon Enhancement to host three public meetings. The public meetings will provide information about the watershed and solicit input from the public about priority watershed issues and concerns. These meetings will be held at the beginning, mid-point and end of the planning process. The public component is also to provide information to the larger community regarding the objectives, progress, development and delivery of the Watershed Management Plan. The last meeting will introduce the draft Final Plan.
Guest speakers for the first public meeting include Dominic Roque, Regional Water Quality Control Board and Chuck Pritchard, Upper Salinas-Las Tablas Resource Conservation District.
The information collected from the public along with stakeholder input will be used to identify and recommend priority activities for restoration actions to address factors limiting Steelhead populations. The recommendations will be integrated into the Watershed Management Plan, slated to be completed in about 12 months.

In The Loop -
Tuesday, January 19, 2010 @ 7:30 PM, Campbell Hall.
“Genius. A sharply written, fast-talking, almost dementedly articulate satire on modern statecraft.” -The New York Times.
An absurdist political comedy with razor-sharp dialogue, In the Loop satirizes the ineptitude of our highest leaders and their culture of spin in a film that is “relentlessly funny – vicious and delicious” (The Guardian, London). With everyone looking out for number one and the fate of the free world at stake, the hilarious ensemble cast of characters (Peter Capaldi, James Gandolfini) bumbles its way across continents and through Machiavellian political dealings to unforeseeable comic resolutions. (Armando Iannucci, 2009, 106 min.).

"Our Seeds: Seeds Blong Yumi is a film celebrating the keepers of the seeds, the farmers and gardeners who preserve and share the source of our food heritage.
A small crew comprising Seed Savers Network (www.seedsavers.net) directors, Australians Michel Fanton and Jude Fanton, took a hundred and sixty hours of footage in eleven countries: Spain, France, Italy, India, Sri Lanka, China, Vietnam, Taiwan, Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands. There are interviews of farmers and expert commentators and documented seed saving, farming methods and cultural activities in both first world and tribal locations.
The film explores the relationship between traditional biodiversity and traditional culture in the wide-ranging locations and shows that there are the same problems and solutions in each of them. It is a David and Goliath story where resilience and persuasive logic triumph over seemingly invincible corporate agribusiness.
The Film encourages viewers to work in solidarity with indigenous farmers around the world to restore traditional farming and plants to their rightful place as highly important assets of local communities and indigenous peoples.
With the threat to local open pollinated seeds and root crops, it is time again for the Seed Savers and friends here in Santa Barbara to come and celebrate the ancient art of Seed Saving and Swapping. This Film's focus is to promote development of local seed saving groups and seed exchanges.
The film will be shown takes place at the Santa Barbara Public Library, Faulkner Gallery, 40 East Anapamu St, in downtown Santa Barbara, on Wednesday, January 20, 7-9pm, 2010. No reservations are required, donation $7.

Join us at Steynberg Gallery Tea & Coffee House on Thursday January 21st at 7:30pm for an intimate night of pictures and songs titled ‘Stranger’s Story’. Brooke Brown-Saracino is out and about the country celebrating her solo-produced and recorded record: Stranger's Story - an understanding of silence and words; a perfectly accurate representation of her full yet solo sound, and somehow through the simplicity comes profundity and something that all artists can only hope for - to reach the Listener. Paired with Brooke's performance, Gregory Bartlett's small photographs are studies in the intersection of urban versus natural environments. Intimate in gesture, obsessively detailed, his photographs are quietly observant, sharing unseen occurrences and untold stories. Visit www.gregorybartlett.net/strangersstory.html for more info. Steynberg's is located at 1531 Monterey Street, SLO (cross road California). Visit steynberggallery.com for a complete listing of our events or give us a call at 547-0278. What will you do when the oil runs out?
Escape from Suburbia – an award winning film that focuses on what people today are doing to create energy independence – will be shown Friday, January 22 at 7 pm in the Theatre in the Old Grammar School, 1350 Main Street, Cambria. Suggested donation; $5.00 or $10.00/family (No one turned away for lack of funds) Group discussion led by Bob Banner after film.
Presidents Nixon and Carter both declared the need for “energy independence” in the 1970s. Thirty years later our society is more dependent that ever on foreign oil. Don't wait for Business or Government to make real changes. But it’s not too late for individuals to create positive solutions.

Transition Town Paso Robles is offering a free, hands-on fruit and nut tree planting workshop on Saturday, January 23rd, from 12 noon to 3 PM at Centennial Park, 600 Nickerson Drive in Paso Robles. The workshop is the second in a series that will demonstrate how to convert lawns to a food-producing garden or “food forest”. The workshop is part of a lawn-to-food demonstration project that is being carried out via a one-year agreement between Transition Town Paso Robles Food Group and the Paso Robles Library & Recreation Department.
Workshop participants will learn about the first step in creating a food forest: letting lawn areas decompose by putting down layers of organic matter. Then they will help plant fruit trees such as pistachio, persimmon, apricot, pomegranite, fig, and almond which are well adapted to Paso Robles’ climate and are drought tolerant. They will also put in winter vegetables such as broccoli, kale, cabbage and carrots .
Participants should bring garden gloves, shovels and rakes if they have them; otherwise tools will be provided on site.

A partnership between the Santa Maria Valley Discovery Museum and the local American Red Cross will make children in our community “disaster-smart” after attending the 4-week “Masters of Disaster”™ safety course taught by Red Cross instructors and held at the Discovery Museum. Geared for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders, this disaster-preparedness program will be held for four Saturdays—January 9, 16, 23, and 30th—from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. at the Santa Maria Valley Discovery Museum classroom located at 705 S. McClelland. Each session will focus on a specific topic area and after the four week session children will have learned about overall disaster preparedness, earthquake response, basic CPR and first aid, how to avoid a fire disaster and how to respond safely in the event of a fire. Among many other important lessons, children who graduate as “Masters of Disaster”™ will know how to use the 9-1-1 emergency phone system, will know how to build a disaster supply kit, will know how to safely escape from a burning home and will receive take home English/Spanish materials to share with their whole family. Visit the Discovery Museum website at www.smvdiscoverymuseum.org to check out the class schedule and to register your child. Children may sign up for one class or the entire 4-week session but participation in all 4 classes is required to receive a “Master of Disaster” certificate. Museum members receive a discount on these classes but the program is open to the public. Advance registration is required and does include all-day admission to the Discovery Museum. The North County White Heron Buddhist Sangha begins each New Year by re-examining basic Buddhist principles. The sangha (which means “community” in Sanskrit) will commence this year’s analysis with two identical lectures, focused on emerging developments in American Buddhism. Folks may attend whichever lecture is more convenient.
The talks take place from 9am to 11am on Sunday, January 24 and Sunday, January 31, in the Community Room of the Atascadero Library, located at 6850 Morro Road in Atascadero.
Led by sangha members, including Cal Poly political science professor Matthew Moore, each seminar will discuss Vajrayana, Vipassana, Theravada, Metta and Zen Buddhist doctrines, as practiced here in America and will include guidance in basic meditation techniques.
Persons interested in learning more about basic Buddhist philosophy may attend one of the lectures and then join the sangha on February 7 when we will begin reviewing a well-respected Buddhist text, titled What the Buddha Taught, by Walpola Rahula. These books are donated and will be distributed without charge to everyone.
Tea and refreshments will be provided.

Anton Bruckner - Adagio from the String Quintet in F, WAB 112
John Harbison - Snow Country for Oboe and String Quartet (1979)
Franz Schubert - String Quintet in C, D. 956
American composer John Harbison wrote the spare, beautiful Snow Country during an unusually dark Wisconsin winter. The work’s starkly tonal landscape recalls the sense of finality of a never-ending winter. Symphonic in scale and intimate in character, the Adagio from Bruckner’s first and only chamber work expresses an almost unbearable bliss. One critic wrote, “If the only thing Bruckner had ever written had been this magnificent slow movement, his reputation would have been secured for all eternity.” The composer Benjamin Britten once said that “the richest 18 months in music history” were “the period in which Franz Schubert wrote...the C Major String Quintet.” This pinnacle in the chamber music repertoire is a tantalizing monument to what might have been had Schubert’s life not been so tragically short.

Grupo de Rua
Tuesday, January 26, 2010 @ 8:00 PM, Campbell Hall.
Santa Barbara Debut!
“Raw 21st-century expression…extraordinarily brilliant.” The Guardian, London.
From the streets of Brazil – a country where beats are celebrated and dance is a generation’s second language – Artistic Director Bruno Beltrão and the powerhouse Grupo de Rua bring the lightning-fast head-spins and stands, hand-jumps, turns and tumbles honed in the back streets of Rio de Janeiro to Campbell Hall for a totally new and fresh look at street dance. The brilliant all male company will perform Beltrão’s newest work, H3 that dispenses with heavy beats and macho posturing to create a minimalist, almost meditative interpretation of hip-hop in which the movement itself becomes its own pulsating rhythm.
General public $40.00.
UCSB Students $19.00.
Includes facility fee.

Wellness From Within Circle.
Experience Wellness From Within every Wednesday evening at Unity San Luis Obispo from 6:00 until 7:00 pm at 1490 Southwood Drive in San Luis Obispo. The public is invited to attend this healing class. A love offering is taken.
The premise of the class is that the process of healing and experiencing wellness is an inside job. It is the inner healing and connecting with spirit that will help each of us find the right mental, emotional, and spiritual connections that will put us in the right place, with the right people, at the right time, with the right information, and the right belief system that will support healing, resulting in each of us experiencing our full wellness.
Each week we work with different paths and lessons in healing whatever is not in alignment with Spirit. We have been working with the appreciation and breathing experience of HeartMath. We worked in recognizing our true, unique, valuable, selves through inner contemplation and by naming ourselves and our life experience in a “white stone” ceremony. We have experienced wellness through a “healing light” meditation.
On February 3, Genevieve, a Quantum Touch healer, will be sharing an energy healing experience at the class. We will be working with Quantum Touch healing throughout the month of February.

A 10-year project to design and build a home for a retired couple in Eastanollee, Ga., that successfully developed innovative ideas within a limited budget convinced Michael Hughes of the importance of grounding design education in hands-on experience. Hughes has refined his vision of design/build pedagogy while teaching at Cornell University, the University of New Mexico, the Catholic University of America, Louisiana State University and the University of Colorado at Denver.
His Joy House Project, conducted with 12 graduate students from CU-Denver, won the Colorado AIA Young Architects Design Award in 2004 and the ACSA Collaborative Practice Award in 2006. Hughes joined the University of Arkansas' School of Architecture in 2006. He teaches second-year studio and has initiated a new design-build project, an outdoor classroom for a local elementary school. Hughes' residential designs have won state and regional design awards from the AIA. His design for a Louisiana home was one of four selected nationally to receive the 2006-07 Faculty Design Award from the ACSA. Hughes' design work has been documented in Architectural Record, This Old House; his essays have appeared in Oz.
He worked with Richard Meier and Frank Gehry before starting his own design practice.

Lompoc Concert Association presents America’s beloved tenor, Daniel Rodriguez, in concert at the First United Methodist Church, 925 No. F St., Lompoc. It was fate that brought an unknown NYPD officer to the national stage after the 9-11 attacks on the World Trade Center towers. His stirring a cappella rendition of “God Bless America” and the National Anthem brought renewed hope, determination and patriotism to America. Since that memorable performance, Daniel, now retired from the police department, has sung around the world, including at the 2002 Winter Olympics, and he was featured in the PBS Memorial Day concert in Washington, D.C.
He has recorded 3 CDs and is looking to the future with the same optimistic spirit that has brought him to this point. His goals include the Broadway stage, opera and acting.
Because this performance is a tribute to all public safety personnel on the Central Coast, there is a special price of $15 per ticket, which will admit public safety personnel and their families. Please present your badge at the door for the discounted price. To hear a sample of Daniel’s program, visit the website at www.lompocconcert.org

The San Luis Obispo Model Railroad Association (SLOMRA) and the Oceano Depot Association will be co-hosting their 3rd Annual “Model Railroad Day” on Sunday, January 31st. This free community event will run from 10:00am until 4:00pm at the historic Oceano Depot. The SLOMRA will be featuring several operating train layouts and the entire Depot will be open to display its unusual artifacts from Oceano and the adjacent railroad. Although this event will act as a fundraiser and member development event for both organizations, the real intent of Model Railroad Day is to share the history of trains and love of modeling with the community. The Oceano Depot is located at 1650 Front Street, between Highway One and the Union Pacific railroad tracks in “downtown” Oceano just south of the track overpass.
Local train buffs, modelers, historians and kids of all ages are encouraged to spend the day at the Depot! The SLOMRA will be showcasing several model displays including layouts of HO, N and On30 Scale trains. Several new modules will be unveiled and operated for the first time that day. Also on display will be Dennis Pearson’s operating On30 model depicting various historic scenes from SLO County’s Pacific Coast Railway. Tours of the entire Depot, including the waiting room and office, will be given that day. The Depot’s recently restored 1907 wooden caboose will also be open for interior and exterior viewing. An exquisite display of classic and historic railroad time pieces and watches will also be on display courtesy of the National Assoc. of Watch and Clock Collectors, Chapter 52. All the youngsters will receive free AMTRAK Conductor Hats and valuable Amtrak Companion Coupons will be available for some lucky adults! A model train Yard Sale will feature great deals on new and used model railroad items. There will be food, drinks and popcorn for sale by the Depot volunteers. The day’s activities will be captured on video and will be featured in an upcoming segments of Joan Sullivan’s “Picture the Past” program which is shown on Charter Cable Channel 2.
The SLOMRA is dedicated to model railroading on the Central Coast of California. Its activities include public and private exhibitions of model railroad layouts, operating sessions, tips and techniques workshops, educational and heritage programs, and social events. Its layouts were prominently featured during the recent Central Coast Railroad Festival. Members enjoy significant benefits including discounted purchases, resource and knowledge sharing, access to club assets and materials, participation in its many events, and privileges on some of the finest model railroads in the area. 3 P.M. Special Reading in Chapel.
For women seeking authenticity in the feminine experience and for men and women interested in kabbalah, myth, mysticism and the evolution of spiritual consciousness in the quantum age, the book reveals an evolving image of God and the fabled Garden of Eden. What if the story of Eve is wrong?
Armed only with a literal interpretation of this myth, irrespective of how exquisitely Eve has been depicted in the arts throughout history, she can never be viewed without some sense of guilt, remorse or shame-- the same emotions with which women continue to struggle in their courageous journeys to empowerment, healing and hope.
Bridging the worlds of Judaism, feminism and spirituality in a quantum age, this book is a multi-layered odyssey of transformation. The kabbalistic Four Worlds animate the archetypal Mystic, Student, Dreamer and Humanitarian within. Their interaction reveals an evolving image of Divinity, constantly present and continually changing, timeless and timely. Beneath the literal surface of Jewish texts, the Sacred Feminine moves elusively in and out of awareness, revealing and concealing clues to our past and future. As "children" of Israel we reach for the shimmer of the "promised land," our own spiritual maturity. Symbolic of our innate curiosity, Eve provides the next step in the journey to consciousness, reconciliation and compassionate connection for the evolving human family. Eve -- hero or villain? As she once again reaches for the fruit, you decide.
Synthesizing the worlds of Judaism and feminism, we discover the egalitarian paradigm that simultaneously celebrates both our individual uniqueness and our shared commonality with every human being. Recognizing the Sacred or Divine Feminine within and without, we stand on the brink of a societal shift in consciousness that can heal our world. . .

COMMUNITY INVITED TO VIEW SPECIAL DOCUMENTARY ABOUT WOMEN’S RIGHTS IN ISRAEL.
On Sunday afternoon, January 31, the Jewish Community Center of San Luis Obispo and Congregation Ohr Tzafon of Atascadero will screen the powerful film, “Praying in Her Own Voice,” and host Rabbi Debbie Israel to lead in discussion.
“Praying in Her Own Voice” documents the courageous struggle of the famed “Women of the Wall” movement. This group has spearheaded the battle for female equality in the religious world. Their main focus has been on the Wailing Wall - the holiest site for Jews where women are not allowed to gather and pray. For the past decade they have challenged the government of Israel by raising media attention through colorful protests and by their unstoppable legal battle – which has ended several times at the Israeli Supreme Court.
Rabbi Debbie Israel appeared in the film, as well as interviewed and participated with the Women of the Wall. She will lead us in a discussion following the screening. Rabbi Israel will be visiting Atascadero from Congregation Emeth in Morgan Hill.
