And he crafts a wide variety of songs -- sometimes philosophical, often funny, stories about life, love gone right and wrong, space travel, the beach and flying dreams. Listen to his latest tunes here: http://www.dinoklaxia.com .....Many musicians have been touched by Gary Garrett's work and don't even know it. He and Lloyd Baggs and co-invented the popular M1 pickup for acoustic guitar, and Garrett played a major role in designing most of L.R. Baggs‘ product line. He was chief engineer for 11 years at the Nipomo-based company.....Recently, Gary has split his time between the Central Coast and his new home in San Francisco, where he met Texas native Kate Kilbane, now also based in The City. Her latest CD, "The Medea Cycle", is a collection of songs from the point of view of the Greek heroine who sacrifices everything for love.     Body Awareness Meditation Workshop Saturday, December 4, 9:30 AM to 5 PM. Sunday, December 5, 9:30 AM to 1 PM. Morro Bay Veterans Hall 209 Surf St. Morro Bay 93442. Sponsored by White Heron Sangha. Naropa University Professor Dr. Reginald Ray has produced a series of guided meditations designed to help develop the kind of somatic awareness that can serve as a rich and reliable foundation for our spiritual practice. They are based on a combination of traditional Buddhist practices, Tibetan Yoga, and influences from indigenous cultures in Africa and the Americas. Some side benefits of these exercises are that they are relaxing and enjoyable (many are done lying down), and at the same time have a surprisingly beneficial effect on our mental clarity and stability. "When meditation is done primarily as a mental exercise, our practice is ultimately doomed to failure." -Reggie Ray. We will practice using Reggie Ray's recorded meditations, as well as some by others. There will be periods of meditation done lying down, sitting, and walking. It will be suitable for beginning as well as advanced meditators. There is no charge. Donations will be accepted to help pay for the facility. Pre-registration is preferred so that we have an idea of how many are coming, but is not necessary. You may pre-register at the White Heron website (link below). Bring a blanket or mat to lie on, and a cushion if you like to sit on the floor (wooden). Chairs will be available. Bring your lunch on Saturday. Tea and cookies will be provided both days. Workshop pre-registration For questions, please contact Carole Maurer at camaurer@sbcglobal.net or 805-528-8018 White Heron Sangha has no formal affiliation with any outside groups, lineages, or styles of Buddhism.

Next Training date: Saturday, January 15, 2011. WHERE: UCSB Campus, The Cliff House, Slough Road at Coal Oil Point Reserve. Slough Road is now paved making access to the COPR much easier. INFO: Program Coordinator, Jennifer Stroh. Office: 805-893-3703. jen.stroh@lifesci.ucsb.edu. WHY: Western Snowy Plover is a threatened species. Nesting on the open sand makes them very vulnerable. Often their eggs and chicks are at risk of being stepped on or destroyed by unknowing beach users or off leash dogs. This is where the docents come in, and make a difference. Docents provide a personal and friendly contact for beach users. They promote public interest and understanding, and in turn, dramatically increase the effectiveness of other plover/tern management efforts at the Reserve. Once a docent, only two hours a week is required. This program is under the auspices of the Santa Barbara Audubon Society.

Hundreds of homeless, but hopeful, animals awaiting their holiday gift—a loving family and a new home—will be available for adoption from Santa Barbara County shelters during the annual “Home for the Holidays” adoption fair. They are all possible pets that, through no fault of their own, are homeless and hoping for a holiday miracle. This open house event allows the public to come get to know the adoptable pets at our local shelters. For some people, it’s a GREAT time to adopt a pet because they get to spend a few days home with them before going back to work. Every cat and dog offered for adoption during the “Home for the Holidays” event is vaccinated, spayed or neutered, and has had a medical and behavioral evaluation. The cost to adopt a dog during the adoption fair is only $65.00; all cats are only $40.00; kittens are 2 for 1. All bunnies adopted will receive a welcome home gift basket. LOCATION / TIMES County Animal Shelter [K-9 PALS (dogs), ASAP (cats), BUNS (rabbits)]. 5473 Overpass Road, Goleta. Saturday, December 4, 2010. 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. FREE ADMISSION. FREE PARKING.     Contact: ECOSLO   (805) 544-1777   info@ECOSLO.org
We need a bunch of energetic volunteers to help extend the scenic Duna Vista loop trail above Lopez on Sunday, December 5th from 9am to 12ish in the afternoon. If you’ve never been on this trail, you are in for a treat. It meanders through oak studded hills, before making a bit of a challenging climb to spectacular 360® views from the top. You can see both arms of the lake directly below, and the Oceano Dunes to the west. Let the rangers at the park entrance know you are volunteering, and you will get complimentary admission. Proceed on the main road to the Arboleda Day Camp where we will meet. It takes about 45 minutes to an hour to walk to the site, and there may be poison oak, so wear sturdy shoes, long pants and long sleeves. We will provide tools, tips and treats to all participants. You will also earn a free day pass to a regional park of your choice as our way of saying thanks! This event is being sponsored by Central Coast Concerned Mountain Bikers (CCCMB), SLO County Parks and ECOSLO. Please RSVP to ECOSLO at 544-1777 or email info@ecoslo.org.

Do your holiday shopping early while supporting 13 local, regional and international charitable organizations who help the less fortunate at the 7th annual Holiday “Alternative Gift” Fair hosted by the First Presbyterian Church of SLO. Sunday, Dec. 5, 2010, 9:30am to 2pm. Make cash donations directly to the participating charities as a memorable and easy way to honor of friends and family on your holiday list, and purchase various Fair Trade food, jewelry & handicraft items as gifts. (Checks or cash only accepted.) Local and regional organizations to be represented at the Fair include Community Action Partners Health Services, Fair Trade Foods, The Food Bank, God’s Hidden Treasures, Green Pastures, Habitat for Humanity, Hospice Partners, HumanKind, Peoples’ Self-Help Housing and Prado Day Center. Participating international organizations include Heifer Project International, Lifewater International and New Horizons. Instead of giving another tie or gift basket this year, an Alternative Gift Fair donation or purchase can help the needy with a hot meal, safe shelter, a wheelchair, vital fresh water or even a farm animal to start a poverty-stricken family on the road to self-sufficiency. What better way to share the joy of the holiday season with others. For more information, call the church office at 543-5451.

Meditation is not a quick fix. It is the method through which the total transformation of our lives from confusion to clarity and from suffering to contentment may occur. Meditation is a simple yet powerfully effective tool. With patience and diligence a regular practice will ensue. With courage, the wisdom to recognize and renounce what covers and clouds the mind and heart will lead to the sure reward, joy and wisdom. This course will provide information, encouragement, and support for following the wisdom path of meditation. Our teacher, Khedrub Zangmo, has been studying and practicing Buddhism for over 25 years. Under the guidance of the highly respected meditation master Lama Gendun Rinpoche, she took monastic vows and completed two consecutive three-year retreats at Dhagpo Kundreul Ling in central France. After completing her second retreat in 1997, Khedrub lived in the women’s monastery established by Gendun Rinpoche and began teaching Buddhism in centers, schools and organizations in Europe and in the USA. At the request of Shamar Rinpoche, Khedrub moved back to the US in 2000. Khedrub is currently a resident teacher of the Pasadena Bodhi Path Center.

"LIVING ROOM" -- CHRISTOPH PEPE AUER - bass clarinet, pepephon. MANU DELAGO – hang & fx. Living Room consists of bass clarinettist Christoph Pepe Auer, Austrian Newcomer of the Year 2007 (Hans-Koller-Award), and Manu Delago, one of the most popular Hang players in the world. This pioneer duo focuses on exploring the bass clarinet’s huge tonal range and the enchanting sound of the Hang. Having formed in 2006, Living Room have toured in more than 20 countries all over the world. Whilst continuously pushing the boundaries within a variety of musical styles, their unusual pairing of instruments creates a highly unique texture of sounds. The first-ever bass clarinet - hang - duo approaches their fresh take on chamber music without any confinements or restrictions, performing original compositions as well as creative arrangements of popular music, by artists such as Nirvana and The Beatles. Felix Rohner and Sabina Schärer, of Panart Instruments, developed the Hang in Berne, Switzerland. This brand-new percussion instrument was premiered at the Frankfurt Musikmesse in 2001. Its design enables the player to effortlessly connect rhythm with melody, and its spectacular shape and sonic versatility makes this curious-looking, UFO-like instrument an absolute must-see. Over two million people have seen Living Room push the limits on their instruments on Youtube. Their shows are full of surprise and chance, often having left audiences wonderstruck, bewildered and bemused. Amongst the most peculiar features you can see Christoph Pepe Auer premier his musical invention the Pepephon. This is not to be missed!!

    Contact: Franczeska Angel   489-4035   bangel4123@aol.com
ILLUSTRATIONS. A new art show by painter and Illustrator, Franczeska Bobi Angel at Town Center Gallery, Santa Maria, CA From San Francisco and around the world, ending in the Central Coast. Franczeska Bobi Angel grew up in the exciting city of San Francisco. After graduation, marriage and six children become more than what she could handle, but we all survived. The family grew up in the San Miguel/Paso Robles area. Art has always been part of her life, teaching and painting and even a little poetry now and then. At the age of 50, and a bad back later, she made the decision to be the best artist she could be. After a trip to India and a semester abroad in Paris, that decision eventually led to Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Franczeska graduated with a major in Illustration. Life being full of strange turns, that led to working as an artist in residence and instructor to a princess, the 34 year old daughter of King Fahad. Many adventures later (Poland, Italy, Spain Egypt), Franczeska quit to assist her 92 year old mother in Arizona. The six years she spent with the Princess were productive, creating 80 paintings and a lot of influences from the Arab family and traditions. Franczeska has spent a year as president of Town Center Gallery, working hand in hand with many strong at heart workers. Franczeska Bobi Angel is the Featured Artist for Town Center Gallery starting October 12 and ending December 9, 2010. Tues. through Saturday 11 am. to 5 pm. There will be a reception on October 22 from 5 to 7 pm. Town Center Gallery is located at 321 Town Center WEST, at the old Mervyn's center, near Bog 5 Sporting Goods.

Songwriters At Play celebrated the music of Joni Mitchell in September at our Morro Bay showcase, and the response was so strong we had to do it again at the Steynberg. Many of the performers from that show return for an encore on Tuesday Dec. 7 at the Steynberg Gallery in SLO: Chick Tuesday, Shannon Savage, Raeme Miner & Johnee Gange, and Kay Ashley. We jazz it up with torch song vocalist Margie Nelson who will cover Joni’s “Be Cool”, which is also on Margie’s new CD “Hungry Girl”! Also performing is Human Nation jazz guitarist Adam Levine. In addition, we will add two Santa Barbarans: Karen Thurber and Tysa Goodrich, also known as Coyoteez (be sure to wish Karen “happy birthday”). Our primary mission with Songwriters at Play is presenting performers of original songs, and so you may hear some originals mixed in with Joni's songs.     Contact: Kelly White O'Neill   805-928-8414   kelly@smdiscoverymuseum.org
Everybody knows that sharing, caring and generosity are some of the “reasons for the season” and local small businesses are putting their profits where it counts by donating proceeds of a huge holiday shopping event at the Discovery Museum towards scholarships for foster children. On Wednesday, December 8th, the community is invited to visit the Discovery Museum from 5:30 to 7:30 and shop over a dozen home-based businesses and make a dent in their holiday shopping all while knowing their purchases support two child-focused agencies. Partnering with CASA—Court Appointed Special Advocates—this event will allow the Discovery Museum to provide annual family memberships to the Museum for kids in the CASA program and their birth or foster families. Consultants and sales representatives from a diverse array of popular products, including Tupperware, Avon, Pampered Chef, Uppercase Living, Stella & Dot, Rendi, Scentsy, Cookie Lee Jewelry, Homemade Jams & Jellies, Purses, Wallets & More, CarMa Designs, and Tastefully Simple will showcase their products, sell great items and gift packages that night and take orders assured to be delivered in time for the December holidays. Each vendor has agreed to donate at least 20% of their profits that night to the Discovery Museum/CASA scholarship program. In addition to enjoying the displays of all these wonderful products, the Discovery Museum and CASA will offer complimentary wine and hors d’oeuvres. “I hope that many people will come and enjoy this shopping experience in such a unique and fun environment, and feel good about supporting both the Discovery Museum and CASA,” shares Kim Davis, executive director of CASA of Santa Barbara County. Her thoughts are echoed by Kelly White O’Neill, the executive director of the Discovery Museum. “CASA, the organization, has a membership to the Museum and the CASA volunteers frequently bring the children they serve for a fun, bonding time at the Museum."

What fans are discovering now is that Anderson also shines as an accomplished solo artist and composer. His solo acoustic Spanos Theatre show will include many classic songs from throughout the YES songbook, as well as his own eclectic work. “The mega bands of the late 70’s had become somewhat distanced from their fans; it is great to see seasoned performers like Jon Anderson move back to simpler roots.” Blogspot

Santa Barbara Permaculture Network Permaculture Around the World Series "From the Mara Soil" film showing Permaculture & Abundant Living in Rural East Africa Tanzania.   Join Santa Barbara Permaculture Network as it continues its Permaculture Around the World series, highlighting the path of Permaculture around the globe, this time in Tanzania, East Africa. What if global hunger, poverty and disease could be solved with the natural and abundant resources already at our disposal?  From the Mara Soil, a film directed by Steve Schrenzel, transports you to a community in rural Tanzania trying to answer this question with a novel approach to solving humanity's greatest challenges---with simple, natural, and affordable solutions, many inspired by Permaculture. The Mara region of Tanzania is one of the poorest in Africa. Nestled between beautiful Lake Victoria and the famous Serengeti Plain, it is home to approximately 1.3 million residents, with a per capita income for most households of less than fifty cents per day. Global Resource Alliance (GRA) based in Ojai, CA, is an organization dedicated to bringing hope, joy and abundance to the world's most impoverished regions, and has a Center located in Musoma, a small city in the Mara region. Their work includes assistance to AIDS orphans, malaria prevention, primary water resource development, alternative energy strategies, solar cooking, micro-finance, and currently a permaculture focus on nearby Kinesi, a village of 5000 on the banks of Lake Victoria, where the film takes place.  Please join Santa Barbara Permaculture Network as we share the dedicated and enlightened work of the Global Resource Alliance co-founders, Lyn Hebenstreit and Tara Blasco. Film-maker Steve Schrenzel will also be in attendance. The event takes place on Thursday, December 9, 7-9 pm at the downtown Santa Barbara Public Library, 40 East Anapamu St, Santa Barbara, CA.     www.wahidmusic.com. WAHID The duo known as Wahid is bound to a rich cultural history of ancient civilizations and melodies, incorporating instruments that were first documented on clay tablets and papyrus scrolls. By adding personal modern elements, a new style of music is created that looks to Byzantium and the Levant for melodic inspiration. Wahid is a dialogue between two unique voices that brings together boundary-crossing approaches to composition and improvisation that defy genre. Chris and Dimitri have collaborated for over 15 years in world music and jazz contexts. Their musical kinship has evolved into a rendering of melodic and soundscape-driven events that inspires the lives and imaginations of its listeners.

Saving dogs just got real funny!!

This series of performances is being put on as a benefit for K9 Pals of Santa Barbara. 100% of the proceeds are being donated. This delightful Christmastime romantic comedy is about Theda Blau, a failed actress, health food nut, analyst and and would-be playwright who wants to find love and success in New York, and Vito Pignoli, a hugely successful TV commercial director. By hilariously holding him hostage in her apartment on a snowy Christmas Eve, she attempts to convince him to be her partner both on the page and off.

A very engaging, funny, and touching play of great dexterity and loving warmth that is sure to add fun to your holiday season! Song Tree Concert Series Saturday December 11th, at the Live Oak Unitarian Fellowship - 820 N. Fairview in Goleta. http://www.songtree.org/UpcomingConcerts.htm

Ken and Jeanie met in Louisiana in 1978 and have been playing together since then, the last 29 years living in New Mexico. In Lousiana they were fortunate enough to spend a lot of time with Dennis McGee and Canray Fontenot, both legendary cajun musicians.

In New Mexico and Arizona they have collected and played music from musicians who are now mostly gone. Spanish Colonial music from northern New Mexico, learned from Cleofes Ortiz, Antonia Apodaca and others; Tohono O'Odham social dance music from south central Arizona, played on two fiddles in harmony - learned from Elliott Johnson from Cobabi, AZ; old cowboy songs and fiddle tunes from a number of different cowboys from this part of the country. There is a lot more on their website and a long interview with us at: http://www.bayouseco.com/node/122

Enjoy local guest performers Jim Wimmer on fiddle and Tom Lee on stand up bass.

All of us share the same desire to be happy and free from suffering. However, negative emotions and mental distractions deprive us of peace of mind, hinder our relationships and impede our goals in life. The essential teachings on Mind Training provide meaningful solutions to the challenges we face in relating with ourselves and others every day. This course will be based on Shamar Rinpoche's new book 'The Path to Awakening,' and is suitable for students at all levels. Dawa Tarchin Phillips was trained as a lama in the Kagyu School of Tibetan Buddhism and completed two 3-year meditation retreats at Dhagpo Kundreul Ling Monastery in France. Appreciated by students around the world for his joyful presence, insight and clarity of presentation, he combines the unique perspective of a western/international upbringing with the traditional training of an authentic, non-sectarian Buddhist teacher and long term practitioner. He is a visiting researcher at the Department of Psychology at UCSB and the resident teacher of the Santa Barbara Bodhi Path Buddhist Center.

    Contact: Kimberly Hahn   805-966-5373   press@sbcaf.org
Main Gallery: Peter Rostovsky and Paul Winstanley: Parallax. A groundbreaking exhibition featuring painters Peter Rostovsky and Paul Winstanley that offers a visual conversation between an established and a mid-career artist, or in other words: a parallax. Winstanley has garnered widespread praise for his paintings, exploring how a photograph conciliates our experience of vision and how the painted world can transcend photography’s supposed neutrality, while Rostovsky photographs the world around him and collects images from the Internet as material for his exactingly rendered, atmospheric paintings. With this new exhibition model, CAF peels back the veneer of institutional authority and allows the audience an intimate view behind the artist’s mind, studio practice, and process in creating their work. Bloom Projects: Charlotta Westergren, Run to Ground. Inspired by her native Sweden, Brooklyn-based artist Charlotta Westergren draws from childhood memories and fairy tales for her paintings. Most commonly known for oil paintings on silver lamé, installations, and whimsical sculptures, she will exhibit newly commissioned works on paper.     "Woodward’s songs are like mountain music with an MFA...she impresses both in concert and on disc, making her someone for Americana connoisseurs to keep an eye on". Michael Berrick of LA Weekly. ..........Alexa Woodward’s haunting banjo songs blend her southern roots with the urban folk sounds of Boston and New York. With a distinctive banjo playing style and lyrics that carry the listener into stories of raw human experience, Woodward has been well received by audiences across the US in over thirty states and in Scandinavia. Likened to an Sufjan Stevens, Judy Garland, and Neko Case, this banjo playing singer/songwriter’s sophomore album charted in the top 200 college radio charts in the United States and was played on numerous National Public Radio programs, and her songs have been aired on national television in the U.S, and Australia (Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance” in the US, and “The Wall” in Australia). She received acclaim as a semifinalist in New York's largest songwriting contest, Jezebel Music's Williamsburg Live Songwriter Competition. She is revered for her sparse, lyrical songs, and her performances in unconventional locations (most notably the Austin Texas sewer in January 2009, where 300 brave underground attendees were politely evacuated through manholes by local police)......     Few icons are more closely identified with childhood and Christmas than model railroads. Thanks to the generous efforts of four local train enthusiasts, we are creating a little holiday magic in our Centeno Gallery with a train-themed exhibit that will run through the holidays. The exhibit includes a working model railroad (O gauge), vintage model train cars and structures, railroad memorabilia, and historic photographs. Railroaders John Roskoski, Mike Marple, Ray Wilson, and Ken Kelly were instrumental in putting this exhibit together. They created the working layout and loaned much of the memorabilia and model trains included in the exhibit. Additional vintage train cars are on loan from Leonard Todd and Carole Oliveira. Rounding out the exhibit are train-related art pieces contributed by local artists Al Brewer, Tom Chrones, Phyllis Daniels, Marilyn Hains, Autumn Long, Jan Manfrina, Julia Rodgers, Cathy Runser, Lynda Schiff, and Kiki Shappell. The Lompoc Affiliate of the Santa Barbara Foundation is a sponsor of this exhibit.

6:00 PM  -  9:00 PM Red Barn Community Music Series New Year's Concert
    Contact: Stuart Mason   534-9021   stu@helmintoller.com
The Red Barn Community Music Series presents old-time bluegrass bands Little Black Train and Black Crown Stringband on Friday, December 31 at the Red Barn in Los Osos.

The traditional year-end celebration will feature two high-energy bands playing a one-hour set each. As always, the evening will begin with a community pot luck supper and open old-time jam session at 6 PM. Bring a dish to share, and your dancing shoes. BYOB, $10 donation suggested.

With an all-star lineup of veteran string wizards Kenny Blackwell, John Weed, and Stuart Mason (and a surprise guest or two), Little Black Train will perform vintage fiddle tunes and old-time songs from their repertoire of traditional material. From Depression-era gospel to Appalachian and and Celtic dance tunes, they explore the roots of bluegrass that date back to the nineteenth century and earlier. They employ the time-honored "folk process" to combine new words and melodies within traditional songs, and unearth fiddle tunes from archival sources in West Virginia, Ireland, and Scotland.

Black Crown Stringband is the latest supergroup to emerge from the fertile San Francisco Bay Area bluegrass and old-time music scene. Comprised of founding members of the Earl Brothers and the Mercury Dimes, the band first appeared at the 2008 Berkeley Old-Time Convention Stringband Contest where their hard-driving sound earned them first prize. Black Crown combines the best elements of old-time stringband music and Bill Monroe's high lonesome sound to create a unique fusion that is at once old-school and brand new.

“Black Crown Stringband’s fusion of old time and bluegrass merges the best elements of both styles.” — Bluegrass Breakdown
