Pioneer Jews and Contemporary Western and Historic Art opens Sunday, August 1 at the Bronfman Family Jewish Community Center, and runs through October 29. Mixing the history of the Jews in Santa Barbara with prominent early western artists like Edward Borein and Channing Peake, along with contemporary western and cowboy artists and photographers, makes this exhibit unique on the art scene. The show opens just before Fiesta with a bombshell question posed by curator Lynn Holley and Santa Barbara writer and historian Erin Graffy: Could Juan Rodriquez Cabrillo, the explorer who discovered California, have been a Spanish Jew? There is evidence to support this theory! All will be revealed in the exhibition. According to curator Lynn Holley, the exhibition is also a rare opportunity to view four loaned Borein etchings of different views of the Santa Barbara Mission, which have never been exhibited together. There will also be two very different works by the late Channing Peake, both for sale. Peake’s wife was Katherine Schott, the daughter of former patrons of Jewish artists in New York and Santa Barbara. Contemporary artists and photographers include cowboy artist Joe Milazzo, whose charcoal and pen and ink drawings are well known in California. One of his drawings of President Ronald Reagan is displayed in the Reagan Ranch Center museum in Santa Barbara. Artist Joel Phillips's work and life are part of a magazine spread that appeared in Art of the West in 2001. His western oils in the exhibit are some of his last available for purchase. Jeff Sojka paints in the style of the early California impressionists, and is the owner of the Trowbridge Gallery in Ojai. Michael Enriquez is part of the Oak Group; his work has a strong flavor of traditional western and cowboy art. In honor of Fiesta, local photographer Peter Treadwell’s well-known photo of a Fiesta rider on the beach is an exciting addition to the exhibition.

BACK PACK TO SCHOOL, SCHOOL SUPPLY GIVEAWAY
    Contact: Sally Ross   805-459-7938   info@ustoocc.org
Us Too, a local volunteer organization is coordinating a community outreach service project called “Back-Pack-to-School”. The goal is to provide backpacks stuffed with new school supplies to less fortunate children in our community so they can go back to school with confidence. Supplies will be distributed to schools in the San Luis Coastal Unified School District. As you think about donating keep this in mind: It is estimated that 1/3 of the student population in San Luis Obispo is either in foster care, homeless or considered low income. Sadly, the numbers are sure to grow in these uncertain economic times. These kids need your support! Our hope is that local businesses, churches and individuals in San Luis Obispo will join in the effort to provide backpacks and supplies. With help from our generous donors, we hope many of SLO’s children in need will be able to keep up with their classmates. You can join those making a difference in the lives of local children. Us Too invites you to help collect new school supplies now through Aug. 4. Donations can be dropped off at all local Starbucks locations & Office Max in the Costco Shopping Center. Or, if you would like to make a monetary donation, a $30 donation provides a deserving child with a back pack and school supplies (make checks payable to “Us Too CC”). If you would like to visit our programs website, click on the link: http://www.ustoocc.org or email us at info@ustoocc.org.

    Contact: Marta Peluso   (805) 544-9251   director@artsobispo.org
"Paradiso/Inferno: Drought and Fire in the Central Coast Landscapes of Nicole Strasburg" expands Central California landscape painting by moving beyond idyllic depictions of nature to portray the environmental realities of drought and the wind-blown wildfires in Santa Barbara County. Avoiding temptations to sensationalize, Strasburg’s paintings are minimalist in their approach with a muted poetic color sensibility based upon abstracted forms drawn from the land, water and sky. Strasburg’s “…fires represent a dynamic transformative energy that is as much…a part of nature as the vegetation they feed on, or the water, clouds and earth that frame them,” wrote George Melrod in Art Ltd. magazine. This solo exhibition of Santa Barbara artist Nicole Strasburg is a collaboration of ARTS Obispo (AO) and the Central California Museum of Art (CCMA). There will be two first Friday Art After Dark receptions for this exhibition: from 6 to 9 PM on August 6 and September 3rd in ARTS Space Obispo, #165 in the SLO Creamery. For more info call 544-9251.

6:30 PM  -  10:00 PM Songwriters at Play
    Contact: Peter J Steynberg   805-547-0278   sgallery@charter.net
Doug and Telisha Williams' recently released sophomore album "Ghost of the Knoxville Girl" just spent 15 weeks in the Americana Music Association Radio Top 40 chart! Want to PLAY on their next record? Check out their "I'm In The Band!" Summer tour contest here - http://bit.ly/ImInTheBand. Doug and Telisha Williams hail from Martinsville, Virginia, where boarded up factories stand as monuments to how fast the world can change. When they write and sing songs about dying small towns, they know what they’re talking about. The unemployment rate where they live is 20.2 %. When you hear them sing songs about a couple of hard luck kids who made some bad decisions and wound up in jail, you’ve got to remember that Doug & Telisha are still good friends with those kids' family. The songs for their latest record, Ghost of the Knoxville Girl, weren’t written by people who like to imagine what it’s like “out there,” instead they came from stories told across kitchen tables or between friends after a couple of pitchers at the Ten Pin. Don't miss them at the Steynberg Gallery in San Luis Obispo on Saturday, August 7th at 8:00 PM. For further information on this performance, go to www.DandTW.com or steynberggallery.com . Their hometown sits in the shadows of the Blue Ridge Mountains and you can hear, smell and taste that influence on their new record, Ghost of the Knoxville Girl. Like the very best singer-songwriters, this duo gives a voice to the struggles of everyday people, as well ghosts of the past. The characters in this collection of songs are resilient spirits who face their troubles straight on, never looking away. Telisha’s voice rises from way down deep and delivers the honest truth with a frank clearness that never wavers. You never for one minute doubt that the emotion is real. Having played and written together since they were teenagers, Doug’s guitar and harmonies follow suit giving soul to heart. The past few years have been filled with hundreds of shows and thousands of miles for Doug and Telisha. They’ve traveled from Florida to Oregon and Michigan to Texas, they’ve played with some of their most beloved heroes - Lucinda Williams, Darrell Scott, Charlie Louvin, and Joe Ely – and been on stage at Anderson Fair, The Birchmere, The Carolina Theater, Godrey Daniels, Madison Square Park and Floydfest. No matter how far they roam, Doug and Telisha always find their way back home. A place that holds tight to the intricacies and contradictions of life in the south today. A place where old time religion, superstition, rundown bars, gravel parking lots and boarded up factories tell stories that wind up being songs. A place where in just one set, Doug & Telisha can still send audience members to their feet in applause, to their knees in prayer, and back to the bar to buy another beer. Join Doug and Telisha’s fans at the Steynberg Gallery in San Luis Obispo on Saturday, August 7th at 8:00 PM to find out why Darrell Scott says "They now have the old-time, pre-70’s country, mountain & honky-tonk road house music all blended together into their own whiskey - open the jar and have a pull!”

They now have the old-time, pre-70’s country, mountain & honky-tonk road house music all blended together into their own whiskey - open the jar and have a pull. Kenny Blackwell (mandolin and guitar), John Weed (fiddle), and Stuart Mason (guitar, banjo, and mandola) are the bluegrass-roots trio Little Black Train. From Depression-era gospel and blues to Appalachian and Celtic dance tunes, they dig up the roots of bluegrass that traveled to America from Ireland and Scotland in the 19th century. Avid practitioners of the time-honored folk process, these boys combine new words and melodies with traditional songs from sources such as the Carter Family, Doc Boggs, and Charlie Poole. On the instrumental side, they mine fiddle tunes from archival sources in West Virginia, Ireland, and Scotland.

     Central Coast Shakespeare Festival
    Contact: Patty Thayer   805-546-4224   patty.thayer24@gmail.com
The Central Coast Shakespeare Festival is thrilled to announce that we’re back for a second season of Shakespeare under the stars at the amazing River Oaks Hot Springs Amphitheater in Paso Robles! Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, and The Gamester, a sparkling new play with an old-style feel, by Freyda Thomas, will be performed in repertory July 9-August 14th. All are invited to grab blankets and beach chairs, family and friends, bring a picnic basket and a smile to enjoy live theatre al fresco in Paso Robles. This summer we bring you an audience favorite for over 300 years, Twelfth Night, one of Shakespeare’s most produced comedies, and for good reason. Unrestrained passions and ribald revelry reign! Twelfth Night, or What You Will is a topsy-turvy triple love story featuring separated twins, mistaken identities, gender crossing disguises, besotted relatives, and wise cracking fools. Once our shipwrecked heroine Viola washes ashore, the world seems to go mad in delightful ways. Running in repertory with Twelfth Night will be The Gamester by Freyda Thomas, a sparkling comical romp loosely based on a 1696 work by Jean-Francois Regnard. The story follows the adventures of young man torn between his beautiful fiancée and his mistress: The Gambling and Gaming Halls of turn of the century Paris. The Chicago Tribune calls The Gamester, “an intriguing hybrid of old and new…with bristling, insightful, richly comic and deliciously rhymed lines…mixing the verbal musicality of an earlier theatrical style with the sensibility of modern life…The Gamester charms on every level." Twelfth Night and The Gamester will run in repertory, alternating weekends from July 9th through August 14th at River Oaks Amphitheater, 800 Clubhouse Drive in Paso Robles, California. Evening performances begin at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday matinees begin at 6 p.m. Tickets are $20 General, $18 students and seniors, $13 for children 12 and under. Go to centralcoastshakespeare.org for more details.

In 2010 the Piedras Blancas Light Station celebrated its 135 birthday. Today the light station is managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). When the BLM assumed management from the Coast Guard in 2001, the 19 acre facility was overgrown with over 40 species of exotic, invasive weeds. Beginning in 2002, Carole Adams researched, planned, and organized a volunteer effort to remove exotic plant species and re-vegetate this 19-acre site with California native plants. In 2004, and again in 2010, Carole and her cadre of volunteers received a national “Making a Difference” award for their contributions. Today, the Light Station is home to hundreds of species of California native plants, providing habitat for dozens of species of birds, butterflies, and other wildlife. Come and hear just how it was all accomplished, and see photographs of the native plants that have returned to the Light Station. Suggested Donation: $4 SLOBG members, $5 public. Free docent-led tour of the Botanical Garden to follow presentation. Mediterranean plants and fabulous local products from olive oil to chocolate available at Eve’s Garden Shop.

The Catholic Healthcare West hospitals on the Central Coast which include Arroyo Grande Community Hospital (AGCH), French Hospital Medical Center (FHMC), and Marian Medical Center (MMC) are proud to announce that each are accepting applications for the 2011 Catholic Healthcare West (CHW) Community Grants Program. The intent of the annual community grant program is to help local nonprofit organizations who have an interest in building healthier communities by improving the health and quality of life for our residents. Each hospital has separate grant funds available and will likely be divided among several grant recipients. These funds are: from AGCH - $25,000; from FHMC - $40,758; and from MMC - $94,034. The criteria for the 2011 grants will focus on the following areas: cardiac wellness; cancer prevention; resources and education; diabetes prevention and management; general healthcare education and disease prevention; and outreach to the underserved. Projects that address at least one of these areas and demonstrate the mission and core values of CHW will be given priority. The CHW Community Grants Program is designed to help communities provide support for undeserved populations. The program, which is funded by contributions from its member hospitals, is one way CHW supports and enhances the advocacy, social justice and healthier communities’ efforts of its hospitals. Some of last year’s local Community Grant recipients include the Arroyo Grande High School, Community Action Partnership of San Luis Obispo County, Central Coast Commission for Senior Citizens, the El Camino Homeless Organization, Food Bank Coalition of San Luis Obispo County, Good Samaritan Shelter, Inc., Santa Maria Valley YMCA, and Transition Food & Shelter. Grant materials including the Letter of Intent (LOI), Grant Application, and Program Brochure are available at www.chwHEALTH.org/communitygrants.     Woods Humane Society encourages you to “Adopt and make it for Life”! If you are thinking about adopting a feline companion, stop by Woods Humane Society on Saturday, August 21st, between 10am-4pm for our Viva Paws Vegas Feline Adopt-a-thon! All feline adoption fees (cats and kittens) will be lowered to only $21 for this one day event. Adoptions include spay/neuter, vaccinations, micro chips, a cat carrier, and an entry into a raffle for a night stay at the Chumash Casino in Santa Barbara County. Come join the festivities on August 21st and enjoy a nip of “Tropicata” Punch, all you can pet buffet, and ice cream specials compliments of our friends at Doc Burnstein’s Ice Cream Parlor. Woods Humane Society continues to see an increase in the number of animals brought in for economic reasons. Through increased adoptions and community awareness, WHS has been able to keep pace with the growth of its feline population, but shelter staff worry that the number of animals surrendered will continue to grow throughout the summer and into the fall—peak time for litters of kittens to arrive at the shelter. Woods Humane Society prides itself on being a premier animal care facility and every adoptable feline is spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and micro-chipped prior to going home. Did you know: • Having a cat reduces your blood pressure and helps prevent heart disease • Cats are easy to house train, especially adult cats, who are probably already house trained • Cats are very clean; they bathe themselves! • Indoor cats and spayed/neutered cats live longer lives, providing up to 20 years of companionship • Lots of cats need good homes; when you adopt one; you’re saving a life while providing WHS the opportunity to care for 2 additional cats entering into our facility! If you are looking to bring a loving new companion feline into your life, please consider stopping by Woods Humane Society and spend some time getting to know all of the truly wonderful adult cats who are desperately seeking a home to call their own! It is a classic that, especially in the tradition of the Karma Kagyü School of Tibetan Buddhism, has been and is widely used whenever a disciple is given a first introduction into Mahamudra. Our teacher, Khenpo Tsering, brings a wealth of knowledge and wisdom to his lucid teachings on the Buddhist path. He is the Headmaster of Shri Diwakar Vihara Buddhist Institute in Kalimpong, India and has taught in Buddhist Colleges in India and Karma Kagyu Centers throughout North America & Europe.

He's also the Adult Education Director at Camarillo United Methodist Church. After earning B.A. and M.A. in History at UCLA, he went to Australian National University for his Ph.D. in Asian Studies and Sociology. Professor Garlington will talk and answer questions about: * The History of Ideas. * Sociology and future of religion. * "New Atheism", such as espoused by Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett, Sam Harris, Christopher Hitchens, Victor Stenger, and others who declare that religion should not be passively tolerated but should instead be countered, criticized and exposed by rational argument wherever its influence arises. They believe that tolerance of pervasive myth and superstition in modern society is not a virtue, and that religious fundamentalism has gone mainstream, taking a toll on education, science, and social progress. A public discussion hosted by the Humanist Society of Santa Barbara, optional $2 student or $5 general donations would be appreciated. - On Saturday, August 21st: - 2:30pm doors open for socializing with refreshments; - 3pm meeting starts in the Patio Room at Vista del Monte, 3775 Modoc Road (Las Positas exit off Hwy.101, midway between UCSB & SBCC) in Santa Barbara.

They have shared the stage with Basia Bulat, Adam Acuragi, Damien Jurado, Christina Antipa, Grand Lake, and many others.     Draft Santa Rosa Creek Watershed Management Plan Available for Public Review. What Can Your Watershed Do For You? Second Public Meeting to Distribute Draft Plan and Solicit Input. Community members are contributing local knowledge to the development of the Santa Rosa Creek Watershed Management Plan funded by a grant from California Department of Fish and Game Fisheries Restoration Grant Program. Led by Greenspace—the Cambria Land Trust, the community-based voluntary Management Plan addresses watershed restoration priorities for the locally threatened Steelhead trout population. Working with project partners, Greenspace will host the second public meeting August 26, 2010 at Rabobank in Cambria from 6:30-8:30pm. Copies of the Draft Plan will be available and a presentation will be made reviewing watershed conditions and plan recommendations. Greenspace has partnered with Arroyo Grande based Central Coast Salmon Enhancement to host three public meetings. The public meetings will provide information about the watershed and solicit input from the public about priority watershed issues and concerns. The public component is also to provide information to the larger community regarding the objectives, progress, development and delivery of the Watershed Management Plan. The last meeting will introduce the draft Final Plan. Salmon Enhancement is also managing the stakeholder input process for the Santa Rosa Creek Watershed Management Plan and has previously worked with stakeholders in Pismo Beach, Nipomo, Arroyo Grande, and Nacimiento and San Antonio Rivers watersheds to develop voluntary plans. According to Stephnie Wald, Watershed Projects Manager with Salmon Enhancement, “By integrating local issues and priorities to the fullest extent that we can, we can better ensure community and funding support for recommended priority measures following completion of the plan.” Stillwater Sciences, a Berkeley based consulting firm, has been hired by Greenspace to collect information about sediment generation and movement, and creek channel changes of the waterways that make up the Santa Rosa Creek watershed. Information collected will be reviewed by a technical advisory committee (TAC) specifically formed for this project. The information collected from the public along with stakeholder input will be used to identify and recommend priority activities for restoration actions to address factors limiting Steelhead populations. The recommendations will be integrated into the Watershed Management Plan, slated to be completed by early 2011.

8:00 PM  -  9:00 PM Dan Bern & Common Rotation
    Contact: Peter Steynberg   805-547-0278   sgallery@charter.net
Dan Bern & Common Rotation. After collaborating on an indie movie soundtrack (Drones), Dan Bern and Common Rotation have continued to work on various projects together, including recordings for Jonathan Demme's Off-Broadway production of Beth Henley's Family Week, an album of new Dan Bern material and the upcoming release of Dan Bern’s greatest hits recorded live in Hollywood. Dan Bern is best known for his prolific songwriting and electric live persona. He has released a dozen albums while spending well over a decade performing everywhere from local coffee shops to Carnegie Hall. Since releasing his first album in 1997, Dan Bern has amassed a strong underground following built on endless touring and his prodigious output of songs of all shapes and sizes. Beginning in 2007, Bern focused much of his energy into motion pictures – he used his talents and sharp wit to compose over a dozen songs for the Jake Kasdan/Judd Apatow music biopic-spoof Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story and wrote the title song for Jonathan Demme’s documentary, Jimmy Carter: Man From Plains. Bern also composed songs that are included in the Nick Stoller/Judd Apatow film Get Him to the Greek, starring Russell Brand and Jonah Hill, in theaters now. Growing up on the same block in New York, Common Rotation band mates Adam Busch, Eric Kufs, and Jordan Katz can’t remember a time when they weren’t making music together. Fifteen years later, this sentiment is still true even though the venue has changed to Southern California. With their melodic blend of acoustic guitar, trumpet, banjo, harmonica and cajon, the very distinct voice of Common Rotation struggles to define the modern folksong, while also demanding relevancy from the pop music medium. While working within the framework of the music industry, Common Rotation continues to self distribute their brand of modern folk music to a growing audience of dedicated fans. The documentary How To Lose follows them on their Living Room Tour from Europe to the Russian fishing villages of Alaska. Having released three previous records, The Big Fear, The Clear Channel EP, and Common Rotation is a Lie, their latest release is a joint record with The Dust Bowl Cavaliers called Common Rotation vs. The Dust Bowl Cavaliers. danbern.com commonrotation.com
