“Day-To-Day Buddhism”
With Dharma Teacher Khedrup Zangmo -
Also December 6 -
This meditation practice and teaching will focus on bringing our practice into our lives and world. Buddhism offers many methods to relieve suffering in our own lives and in the lives of others. Nobody wants to suffer and everyone wants to be happy. Learning to meditate with trained guidance can ease our suffering and truly transform our lives. Learning to take these experiences out in the world truly transforms us and the world we live in. We will discuss taking our sitting and other practices into our daily lives and finding the space in our busy lives for practice.
Khedrub Zangmo has been studying and practicing Buddhism for over 25 years. Under the guidance of the highly respected meditation master Lama Gendun Rinpoche, she took monastic vows and completed two consecutive three-year retreats at Dhagpo Kundreul Ling in central France . After completing her second retreat in 1997, Khedrub lived in the women’s monastery established by Gendun Rinpoche and began teaching Buddhism in centers, schools and organizations in Europe and in the USA . At the request of Shamar Rinpoche, Khedrub moved back to the US in 2000. Khedrub is currently a resident teacher of the Pasadena Bodhi Path Center.

A one–hour presentation with the musicians’ commentary exploring how the first two chamber music works of Beethoven and Mozart signaled great things to come.
W.A. Mozart – Piano and Violin Sonata in C, K. 6, op. 1.
Ludwig van Beethoven - Piano Trio in E-flat, op. 1/1.
Ernst von Dohnányi - Piano Quintet in c, op. 1.
Scott Yoo, violin; Jason Uyeyama, violin; Edwin Kaplan, viola; Andrew Smith, cello; Noam Elkies, piano.
Festival Mozaic’s WinterMezzo Series includes two weekends of engaging musical experiences centered on great works of chamber music, featuring our Festival’s nationally-renowned guest artists. To begin the celebrations of our 40th year, WinterMezzo activities focus on ‘firsts and lasts’–first works of major composers and final works that assured their places in musical history. Each WinterMezzo weekend focuses on three works and offers you three different ways to experience them:
*Listen to musicians’ perspectives in a one-hour Notable Encounter INSIGHTS, where the performers explore topics pertaining to the featured works.
*Enjoy an evening of food, wine and music at a Notable Encounter DINNER to get the performers’ perspectives on the weekend’s program, plus listen to program highlights. (This Nov. 7 event is sold out).
*Hear it all come together at the Sunday CONCERT, where the full works are performed. Concert to be held on Nov. 8, 3 p.m. at United Methodist Church.

“m-pact” to Perform at Cuesta Vocal Jazz Festival Concert
For more information and music samples, please visit www.m-pact.com or www.sonicbids.com/epk/epk.aspx?epk_id=29759.
Cuesta College will feature Los Angeles-based a cappella group m-pact at the Vocal Jazz Festival Concert on Friday, November 6 at 8 pm.
Hailed "one of the best pop-jazz vocal groups in the world" by the San Francisco Chronicle, m-pact is respected worldwide as a cutting edge trailblazer in the realm of vocal music. Emerging from an age of auto-tune and overproduction, this Los Angeles-based sextet has cultivated a new generation of ears hungry for the fresh, raw power of nature's "first instrument" - the human voice.
From the beginning, the "pact" of these well-studied masters has been to stay true to Music, regardless of style or genre. Their sophisticated sound and accessible appeal have garnered vast accolades, from Vocal Group of the Year from the LA Music Awards, an Indie nomination (the Independent GrammyTM), and Artist of the Year (Seattle Music Awards), to Grand National Champs of the Harmony Sweepstakes competition.
Touring renowned fine arts halls and jazz festivals across four continents, m-pact has performed with pop superstars Sheryl Crow, Boyz II Men, Kenny G, Liza Minnelli, Babyface, Heart's Ann Wilson and Jackson Browne to name a few, as well as with jazz legends from Ray Charles, Natalie Cole, Bobby McFerrin, Take 6, and the New York Voices to the Woody Herman Orchestra and the Maynard Ferguson Big Band. Over the last dozen years, their signature sound has been used in both TV themes and animated Disney feature films, and is enjoyed on syndicated radio worldwide.

This award winning New Folk trio, comprised of singer songwriters Greg Beattie and Victoria Blythe, with Dave Decker on lead guitar and backup vocals, combines folk, jazz, blues and country into an incredible mix that is both fresh and timeless. Their songs have captured the prestigious Kerrville New Folk prize, Falcon Ridge Emerging Artist, grand prize in the West Coast Songwriters International song contest as well as first place in two additional categories, West Coast Songwriters Association Song of the Year Honors, and have appeared in TV shows and movies. Their live show is a mix of Victoria's soaring, ethereal vocals and hauntingly beautiful fiddle, Greg's energetic and insightful musical treatment of birth, death and everything in between, and Dave's constantly creative lead-guitar commentary. *THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT* Castoro Cellars, Hwy 46W and Bethel Rd. in Templeton. Tickets are $22 805-238-0725.
The Duhks (pronounced "Ducks") are a Juno Award Winning and Grammy Nominated 5-member Canadian folk-rock-Celtic-old time-bluegrass group hailing from Winnipeg, MB. Their music draws heavily on all North American musical traditions, while successfully integrating Latin-music-influenced percussion. The Duhks are currently touring in support of their new album, "Fast Paced World", which is receiving rave reviews.
The Duhks have made a brilliant, edgy career of blending folk, string-band, pop and world music since first forming in Winnipeg, Manitoba, seven years ago. Their full-throttle sound is simple to enjoy and difficult to define: The Canadian folk-pop band records on an American country label, Sugar Hill; the band hails from one of the coldest and most isolated music scenes in the Western Hemisphere, yet uses inspired Latin rhythms; and the group can take an old folk song about the Galveston, Texas, flood, "Mighty Storm," and make it hum with groove-crazed energy.

Genesis West, in their most ambitious production to date, presents the most outrageously fun play by the most controversial living Irish playwright. The Lieutenant of Inishmore by Martin McDonagh won the 2003 Olivier Award for Best Comedy, a 2006 Obie award for Best Playwriting and a Tony nomination for best play. In the play a sadistic rogue enforcer of an I.R.A. splinter group becomes emotionally unglued when his only friend in the world is killed - his cat. He loves his pet more than life itself and someone is going to pay. McDonagh creatively combines comedy with carnage creating a brilliant satire on terrorism and a biting commentary on the self-perpetuating spirals of violence that occur throughout our world.

November is Adopt-A-Senior Pet month and the end of kitten season. The “Kittenpalooza and Seniors Too!” is an opportunity for community members to celebrate November by adopting an end-of-the-season kitten or a well-seasoned senior pet at the SLO County Animal Shelter.
Help celebrate Adopt-a-Senior-Pet month and the end of kitten season by adopting a loveable senior pet or cuddle kitten at the SLO County Animal Shelter.
The Kittenpalooza and Seniors Too! adopt-a-pet will be held on the lawn of the San Luis Obispo County Shelter at 885 Oklahoma Avenue, San Luis Obispo, November 7, 2009 from 11:00 am to 4:00pm.
If you’ve been thinking about adopting a kitten, now’s the time as the 2009 kitten season is coming to an end.
For the $70.00 cat adoption fee, all cats and kittens will:
. Have all their initial basic vaccinations (rabies, Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukipenia) or receive free vaccinations when the kitten Is of age
. Be FeLV/FIV tested or receive a free test when the kitten is of age.
. Be microchipped
. Be spayed or neutered
. Be eligible for a free veterinarian check
. Have a new collar and id tag
. Come with a cardboard cat carrier.
Or if you’d like to adopt a pet that knows the ropes, consider a senior pet. With a senior:
1. You get what you see. Unlike a puppy or kitten, you know how big, how energetic, and what the personality is of your new pet.
2. They’re easier to train. Contrary to the old adage, older pets are often easier to train because they’re calmer or, better still, already know their basic commands.
3. They love to love. Senior pets know how important a home is and show their appreciation with love and gratitude.
For the $95.00 dog adoption fee (plus a $15 county rabies license) all dogs will:
. Have all their initial basic vaccinations (rabies, bordatella, parvo, adenovirus, parainfluenza, distemper)
. Be microchipped
. Be spayed or neutered.

Learn about the Reserve's current restoration projects and its cultural and geologic history while identifying flora and fauna-such as American Kestrel, Coast Golden Bush, and the Globuse Dune Beetle-that make their home at Coal Oil Point. $5 donation suggested, except for students and Reserve volunteers.
Tours occur monthly on the first Saturday from 2:00pm – 4:15pm. Tours for groups or classes over five people are available by appointment if reservations are made at least three weeks in advance.
Reservations for tours are required. No reservations are taken on weekends. Tours are capped at 15 people, so early registration is suggested. Contact Leeza Charleboix at (805) 893-5092 or coprstaff@lifesci.ucsb.edu to reserve a spot.
Tours are a program of Shorelines & Watersheds-a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization-and Coal Oil Point Reserve. Funding for the Tour Program is provided by the Coastal Fund and Venoco Inc.

Sidesaddle & Co., based in San Jose California, has been captivating audiences with their unique acoustic sound since 1979 when the band was first established. The five members of the band come from an interesting variety of musical backgrounds, which come alive in their repertoire of primarily traditional Bluegrass music, seasoned with vintage Country, Irish, Cajun and Cowboy Western. Their popularity is extended further by including Gospel, Folk, Novelty and Comedy. Billboard Magazine has called their music "superbly melodic." Critics have hailed their performances as "sophisticated and highly entertaining" and their harmonies "impeccable."
Sidesaddle. & Co.'s style is characterized by their soulful vocal harmonies and strong creative instrumental talents. The vocalists in the band share the lead singing, each with a unique personal style that gives the band its appealing diversity.

The Red Barn Community Music Series will present the European gypsy music of Café Musique on Saturday November 7 at St. Benedict's Episcopal Church in Los Osos.
Classical, swing, gypsy, folk and tango all find expression in the rich and exciting sound of Café Musique. By combining the beauty of the violin with the subtle expression of the accordion, Café Musique has harnessed the European gypsy sound as its own. The group is quite unlike any other band you might hear out on the music circuit. The group maintains that it has an identity crisis and it's easy to see why, what with the mixture of musical backgrounds that each member brings to the fold. Add compelling vocals with two and three part harmonies, along with timeless standards and new compositions, and you start to have an idea what the band is all about. The members of Café Musique are Brynn Albanese on violin and vocals, Piper Heisig on percussion and vocals, Duane Inglish on accordion, Fred Murray on bass, and Craig Nuttycombe on guitar and vocals.
The Red Barn Community Music Series is a monthly concert series showcasing local, regional, and national musicians performing old time, bluegrass, swing, Celtic, blues, and other forms of acoustic roots music. St. Benedict's Episcopal Church is located at 2220 Snowy Egret Lane in Los Osos. Snowy Egret Lane is off Clark Valley Rd near the corner of Clark Valley and Los Osos Valley Rd. The church can easily be seen from Los Osos Valley Rd, opposite the Los Osos Cemetery and Memorial Gardens. The show begins at 7:00 PM with pot luck supper and pot luck band starting at 6 PM. No tickets are required but admission will be $10 at the door. BYOB and a dish to share for the pot luck supper.

“Can a protest song be a love song? Can it call for change and still
respect tradition? Can you go home to a place you’ve never been? These
are the questions we’re asking,” says Adam, from Common Rotation, a
trio of childhood friends hailing from Long Island, NY, but now living
in Southern CA.
With their melodic blend of acoustic guitar, trumpet, banjo,
harmonica, and cajon, the very distinct voices of Common Rotation
struggle to define the modern folksong, while also demanding relevancy
from the pop music medium. Fresh off a summer-long tour with The
Indigo Girls, Common Rotation is already back at work in the studio
recording a new record with folksinger Dan Bern, due out spring of
2010. In between studio time, they'll also be promoting their latest
album, Common Rotation vs. Dustbowl Cavaliers.
Songstresses Liz Clark and Tessa Perry will be teaming up with Common
Rotation, playing separate sets, but also utilizing both groups
natural instinct of collaboration, playing music together for
audiences along the west coast this fall.
Already established as critically-acclaimed and popular performers,
Liz Clark and Tessa Perry joined voices and forces four years ago,
creating a union that proves that the whole is more than the sum of
the parts. They perform on both sides of the Atlantic, playing to
small coffeehouses and rock clubs to sold-out concert halls, opening
for the likes of Ani DiFranco, Damien Rice, Joe Walsh and The Counting Crows.Liz and Tessa spend part of their year as homeless troubadours, touring the USA and sharing their love of music. The rest of the year is spent in Ireland, working a 10 acre organic garden and running an award-winning cafe on the Emerald Island's West Coast.
Both of these groups metiers lie in the heart of the song, which evoke
America’s past and present, and an equally timeless artistic drive to
make music and celebrate the harmony of the grace notes we all share.

W.A. Mozart – Piano and Violin Sonata in C, K. 6, op. 1
Ludwig van Beethoven - Piano Trio in E-flat, op. 1/1
Ernst von Dohnányi - Piano Quintet in c, op. 1
Each work is an Opus One or first work of these composers, foreshadowing great genius to come. Mozart’s delightful Violin Sonata, composed when he was eight, is paired with Beethoven’s first attempt at chamber music, 30 years later. Hungarian composer Dohnányi wrote this lushly romantic quintet at the age of 18 and the influence of Brahms on the young composer is immediately apparent.

on Sunday 8th November @ 7 pm -FREE.

Bill Davies began seriously hiking in 2001, after he turned 65. Since that time
he has hiked well over 6,000 miles, for most part alone, carrying his food, cooking
supplies, water and shelter in a pack weight of about 25 pounds.
He started with a hike from Mexico to Canada, the 2674 miles of the Pacific Crest
Trail. That experience was soon followed by 11,000 miles of the Appalachian Trail,
then a hike from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean and up the 19,400 ft. of
Mt. Killamanjero. Most recently he hiked the Compestela Trail that he will be
talking about in this talk.
Bill and his wife, Phyllis, for the last 35 years have been improving the land on
their family’s small farm solar powered farm in the Los Osos Valley. They use the
sun to cook much of their food and produce from the garden. They have a huge
commitment to “lightening their footprint”.

This is a busy time of year and the SLO Food Bank is busy too, trying to meet the on-going needs of keeping SLO County nourished. To support this effort Albert’s Florist, and Rose and Henry Tailors, are co-hosting a fundraiser and inviting everyone to join them in making contributions to the SLO Food Bank. Albert’s Florist is offering a chance to win a monthly flower arrangement for a year and Rose and Henry Tailors is offering one year tailoring service up to $100 in value, and other prizes as an incentive for you to join in this fund raising effort. Join in celebrating Albert’s Florist, 60 years of spirited service, helping people to express gratitude and love with flowers to highlight life’s memories. Devoted to quality when creating floral expressions, "Simple or complex-large or small Albert's Florist will do it all!" Rose and Henry Tailors has been providing quality service in tailoring your wardrobe for your style of living for 42 years. To get more information about this fundraising event you can call Albert’s Florist at 543-0567. You can also contact SLO Food Bank directly to make your contributions 238-4664.
Toot Toot…SLO Food Bank! While working as a florist I have made so many beautiful things. Every now and then I create something so lovely I get lost in admiration of what has been created. After decades as a florist I have an assurance that we aren’t alone. Out of nowhere will come a requested tribute to celebrate the life of someone departed and I keep this in mind and heart…as I design a piece of comfort. In my early years I would call out to everyone “Look what I helped create” and they would laugh and say I was tooting my own horn, but then when they saw what I made they would say “Toot Toot” so now I just say “Toot Toot”. I have learned that there is no need to toot my own horn, but sometimes it just feels good to call attention to something wonderful and toot our horns together. This is one of those occasions…Toot Toot!
This fund-raiser for SLO Food Bank is a fine example of how the folks at Albert’s Florist, and Rose and Henry Tailors, enjoy helping people. If you know them you will agree this is great way to raise awareness and funds for SLO Food Bank and if you don’t know them yet this is a wonderful opportunity to meet Rose and her daughter Katherine from Rose and Henry Tailors, and Tzolig and Barkev Abadjian Rose’s daughter and son-in-law from Albert’s Florist. The San Luis Obispo Chamber of Commerce will perform a “Ribbon Cutting Ceremony” at 4:30 so all Chamber Members are encouraged to come join in celebrating a little early. They hope you will make some time to visit Albert’s Florist, and Rose and Henry for their SLO Food Bank fund-raiser…at their new location Friday, November 20th at 1357 Monterey Street, San Luis Obispo from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Come and enjoy authentic Armenian food, see the beautiful Christmas and Holiday floral gift ideas, get a chance to win great prizes and at the same time help raise support for SLO food Bank.

San Luis Obispo: Results from four studies unveiled during an Oct. 13, 2009, congressional briefing in Washington, D.C. underscore how change in the workplace environment can benefit employees’ health and organizations’ bottom lines.
Those changes can be as simple as managers showing interest in an employee’s personal life and applying policies creatively to an employee’s family needs, according to initial research findings released by the Work, Family & Health Network.
It is in this vein that the San Luis Obispo-based Human Resources Association of the Central Coast has gathered a panel of experts in employee wellness and employer health coverage to address members at their November meeting.
The public is invited to the luncheon meeting held Tuesday, November 10th, 11:30 to 1pm at the Madonna Inn, where the topic will be “Employer Options to Keep Health Costs Down”. Panelists include attorney Christine Roberts, with the Santa Barbara law firm of Mullen & Henzell where she practices exclusively in the employment benefits and employment law area. Joining her will be Lesa Caputo, Employee Benefits Producer and Manager of the Employee Benefits Division of Brown & Brown Insurance in Santa Barbara, and Dick Castner, Executive Director for the Western Regional Office of the US Chamber of Commerce.
The panel is expected to address how employers can benefit financially through incentives for wellness lifestyles such as non-smoking, non-obesity, lower cholesterol and blood pressure. They will also discuss how these “lifestyles” are measured in order to save on health care premiums; any legal ramifications in tiered premiums based on wellness indicators; incentives; HIPAA requirements; and the current pulse in Washington regarding these issues. There will be a question/answer period following.

The Persuasions are a monumental doo-wop, R & B and a cappella group that has inspired audiences and performers alike for over forty-five years. Transforming songs by U2, the Beatles and others with their unique style and substance into dynamic R&B a cappella, this quartet is innovative, original and beautiful. Together since they started singing on the stoops of Brooklyn in 1961, The Persuasions have released over 20 albums and have recorded or performed with artists including Bette Midler, Paul Simon and B.B. King. They’ve been dubbed the "Kings of A Cappella" by NPR and their vocal style has paved the way for today's platinum a cappella acts, Take 6 and Bobby McFerrin, as well as the retro-hip-hop style of Boyz II Men. You know it’s fall on the California coast when the poison oak turns red, the goldenrod blooms yellow and the acorns start blasting from the trees. Those are our cues that it’s time to get native plants in the ground. And we have plenty of trees, shrubs and smaller plants ready and waiting for us. Can you help us free them from their pots? We need LOTS of volunteers for our fall planting party scheduled for Saturday, November 14th at 9:00am. We have hundreds of plants that need to be dug in, watered and mulched. We'll keep you refreshed with plenty of drinks and munchies.
So grab your gloves and a shovel if you have one and come join us! If you need more info, call Holly at 239-3928 or find directions to the preserve at www.morrocoastaudubon.org/spdirection.htm.

RENEWING “THE JOY OF COOKING”
Live cooking demonstration & tasting event!
10 am -12 noon.
Saturday Nov 14, 2009.
Spencer’s Market, 1314 Madonna Road, San Luis Obispo
Sponsored by National Multiple Sclerosis Society, SLO Co.
Fatigue and physical limitations can easily take the joy out of cooking. Unfortunately, that can lead to losing the joy of eating, too, and adopting the habit of relying too much on heavily processed – and less healthy – foods.
At this exciting demo, Chef Doug Carroll (who has lived with MS for many years) will show you how to make food prep easier and quicker so that people with physical challenges can conserve energy and enjoy the process even when fatigue strikes. Doug will also show how simple sauces and dips can enliven a meal, and how to combine fresh foods with carefully selected convenience items to strike a healthy balance. Adapting prep and cooking techniques for those who use wheelchairs will be covered as well.
Thanks to Spencer’s Market, Doug will be cooking for a live audience, which will get to taste the dishes prepared. Make sure you don’t miss out on this fun educational event, which might well revive your love for the kitchen!
Space is limited, so please reserve your place by Wednesday, November 11th. Call (805) 682-8783.

In America today, an unprecedented 40 million women are undergoing menopause, also known as the “change of life.” Unfortunately, the vast majority of them don’t understand this natural transition or know how to work with the symptoms associated with it.
Clinical Ayurvedic Specialists Holly Padove and Jean Wetzel, PhD will offer a workshop to help women in their 30’s through 60’s to lessen the discomfort often associated with perimenopause and menopause. The class will be held at Smiling Dog Yoga in San Luis Obispo on Saturday, November 14 from 2-5 p.m. The fee is $40 for preregistration by November 6, or $45 at the door. To register, contact Smiling Dog Yoga at 546-9100 or visit www.smilingdogyogaslo.com.
Ayurveda, a 5,000 year old healing tradition from India, provides a wealth of knowledge to help women smoothly transition into menopause, considered the “Wise Woman” years in many cultures.
Areas covered in the workshop will include a quick overview of Ayurveda and its take on menopause, as well as suggestions for treating menopausal symptoms naturally, including herbs, diet and lifestyle practices and yoga to support “the change.”
Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing as the class will include a few simple yoga postures.

On Saturday November 14th, 2009, The Morro Bay Community Foundation will present, Morro Bay Sings Joni. A living tribute to one of the best singer/songwriters ever, Joni Mitchell. This will be a wonderful night of music with local musicians coming together to benefit the Morro Bay Community Foundation. The purpose of the Foundation is to provide recreational scholarships to financially assist needy families in Cayucos, Los Osos, and Morro Bay by offsetting the cost for their children’s participation in the Morro Bay Recreation and Parks Department’s recreational activities, as well as school age licensed childcare. Requests for these scholarships, funding up to 60% of a program, are at an all-time high. The Foundation is seeking community support in order to continue to serve our youth during these difficult economic times.
The doors open at 5pm and the music starts at 7pm. Homemade soups, bread and salad will be available for purchase, catered by The Galley Seafood Bar and Grill of Morro Bay. On Saturday, November 14, the Song Tree concert series will welcome back the band that started it all, Santa Barbara’s jazz jewel, Ulysses Jasz.
The word “Jasz” in the name reflects one of the historic spellings of this uniquely American form of music. The band draws on the influences of the New Orleans, Chicago, New York and West Coast jazz styles, and mixes in Dixieland, Ragtime, Swing, and the Blues. Giving it their own 21st-century “punch,” Ulysses Jasz’s music respects tradition while it engages listeners of every generation.
Ulysses Jasz didn’t start out as a band. It started out as a weekly jam session at Santa Barbara’s James Joyce Pub, organized by Ulysses’ banjo player Frank Franks (aka Alex Marshall). Only after finding itself showing “band-like” characteristics did the group take the name of Joyce’s famous novel, in honor of their weekly meeting place. For more than eleven years, Ulysses Jasz has performed at the James Joyce every Saturday night.
The concert will take place on Saturday, November 14th at 7:30 p.m. at the Live Oak Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 820 N. Fairview in Goleta. Tickets are $15 (suggested donation) and are available in advance at Folk Mote Music and Jensen’s Guitar and music in Santa Barbara, or at the door. The concert begins at 7:30; the ticket table opens at 6:45 and the doors open at 7:00.

“Understanding the Relationship between Thoughts, Emotions and True Happiness in Body and Mind”
With Dharma Teacher Dawa Tarchin Phillips -
Also December 13 -
How does your mind work and manifest thoughts, feelings and your perceptions? What is the underlying reality of your being? Every moment of every day you are involved in, and dealing with the manifestations of your body and the experiences and expressions of your mind. They make up who you are and what you identify with most intimately. As you go through life, you experience manifold different states of physical and mental challenges in the search of well-being.
During this teaching series we will explore the Buddha’s advice on how to correctly view the reality of ones body and the productions of ones mind when our aim is to reduce suffering. Teachings based on the 5 Skandhas and 51 Mental Events.
Buddhist Dharma Teacher Dawa Tarchin Phillips completed two 3-year meditation retreats as a student of the Mahamudra meditation master Gendun Rinpoche at Dhagpo Kundreul Ling Monastery in France where he received the transmission of the Karma Kagyu Lineage. Prior to focusing on meditative practices, Dawa pursued advanced studies in the arts, a career in the entertainment industry and worked with severely ill cancer and cardiac patients. Today, he teaches throughout Europe and the US, offering guidance to those on the spiritual path and is the resident teacher of Bodhi Path Center Santa Barbara.

"Pictures of Resistance: The Wartime Photographs of Jewish Partisan Faye Schulman"
Born in Poland in 1924, Faye Schulman received her first camera when she was 13. It was that camera which ultimately saved her life, and allowed her to later document Jewish partisan activity.
Schulman's rare collection of images captures the camaraderie, horror, loss, and bravery of the partisans who fought the Germans and their collaborators. Schulman took over a hundred photographs, developing the negatives under blankets and making "sun prints" during the day.
Pictures of Resistance is produced by the Jewish Partisan Educational Foundation (www.jewishpartisans.org).
"Paintings of the Red Forest and Burning Synagogues" by Greta Schreyer.
Greta Schreyer (1917-2005) was forced by the Nazi occupation to emigrate from Vienna to the United States in 1938. In New York she attempted to paint her surroundings, but the trauma of losing her parents in concentration camps provoked her instead to paint scenes from memory of the Austrian countryside.
Seven impressionistic and vivid paintings represent the woods of Eastern Europe where the partisans hid from the Germans and their collaborators.

Join us at the San Luis Obispo Art Center with painter Ken Christensen while he talks about his trip through France and shares images in a slide show!
Here's a sneak peak at the tales Ken has to tell:
"When in Europe I find everything interesting and not just the famous sights. It's not much of an exaggeration to say that every rock has a story. the best way to savor every house, garden, and village is on foot but something just as languid that will carry you further is to travel by bicycle.
"There were about ten or fifteen boats of various description and they proudly led me to the love of their lives, the Biesboch, their boat. The boat was built in the 1940's and had lovely lines. They were especially proud because the boat had just come back from the dry dock where she had been completely repainted in black and white with a little trim work in red and yellow."

Brand new oldtime bluegrass band Little Black Train will be performing a concert at Steynberg Gallery in San Luis Obispo on Sunday, Nov. 15 at 7 pm. Little Black Train is an exciting new project for Central Coast acoustic wizards John Weed (fiddle), Kenny Blackwell (mandolin), and Stuart Mason (guitar). Named after a traditional Carter Family gospel song, the group fuses old-time Americana with Celtic and original pieces to produce a crowd-pleasing mix of "oldternative" bluegrass music. Weed and Mason are members of international touring Celtic band Molly's Revenge. Both have performed at festivals in China, Scotland, Ireland, and many of the United States, while Kenny tours regularly with guitarist Dorian Michael.
Mandolinist Kenny Blackwell, who studied with the legendary Jethro Burns, has been a fixture in the West Coast bluegrass scene since the late '80s. He is known for his extensive studio work on various projects, as well as his collaborations with progressive fiddler Richard Greene and his membership in the Laurel Canyon Ramblers, a legendary California bluegrass outfit.
An accomplished fiddler across genres, John Weed has lived in Ireland and immersed himself in the traditional styles of Clare and Donegal. The result is an old-time Irish fiddling style that compliments his forays into bluegrass, swing, and other American music. A classically trained violinist, John leverages his understanding of the instrument to coax emotion from every tune.
Guitarist Stuart Mason is known for his authentic vocals, melodic mandola, and inability to hold his whiskey. A native of West Virginia, Stuart has won awards for traditional singing (Goleta Old-Time Fiddler’s Convention), mandola (Topanga Banjo and Fiddle Contest), and songwriting (West Coast Songwriter’s Association). In July a song from his solo release "Appalachian Bride" was selected from among 286 entries to appear on the first New Times Music Awards Compilation CD.

The San Luis Obispo Art Center presents Manufactured Landscapes.
Director Jennifer Baichwal follows Edward Burtynsky as he visits what he calls manufactured landscapes: heaps, e-waste dumps, huge factories in the Fuijan Zhejiand provinces of China, and a place in Bangladesh where ships are taken apart for recycling. In China, workers gather outside the factory, exhorted by their team leader to produce more and make fewer errors. A woman assembles a circuit breaker, and woman and children are seen picking through debris or playing in it. Burtynsky concludes with a visit to Shanghai, the world's fastest growing city, where wealth and poverty, high-rises and old neighborhoods are side by side.
Nominated for the Grand Jury Prize Sundance Film Festival, and Independent Spirit Awards. Winner of the RiverRun Film Festival, Best Documentary.

Join the Cal Poly Science Café, a program for the entire campus community, as we engage in conversation about Community Supported Agriculture, Education, and Intellectual Freedom. Cal Poly Organic Farm Manager Cindy Douglas will present the campus organic farm as both a campus enterprise and a source of fresh, nutritious, and easily accessible food choices for the campus and local community. The community's role in the CSA program, as well as the community's role in Education in general will be explored. Together, we will assess the importance of Intellectual Freedom and explore who decides what a Cal Poly student eats and learns and community members' roles in that process. The Café is held on campus, at the Kennedy Library's 2nd floor Café Lounge (next to Julian's) and refreshments will be served to participants. Come at 5 pm or whenever you get out of class or step off of the bus. We invite the local community to participate as well - ride the bus to the new Kennedy Library bus stop! If you bring a canned food donation, you can ride the bus for free this week. Bring a canned-food item for the SLO Food Bank Coalition and donate the can at the Science Café bin in the library.

San Luis Obispo Geographic Information System (GIS) Users Group, Urban and Regional Information System Association, and Cal Poly Kennedy Library announce GIS Day event on November 19, 2009 from 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm at Cal Poly Kennedy Library. There will be exhibits, presentations, and networking opportunities for everyone interested in GIS.
GIS Day is a global event to make people aware of geographic information system technology and the important contributions it makes in the fields of science, technology, information, and the humanities.
Government agencies, educational institutions, and private companies will showcase how GIS is used to manage City assets, track spread of wild fire, design vineyards, analyze research data, and more.
A GIS is a computer-based mapping tool that takes information from a database about a location, such as streets, buildings, water features, and terrain, and turns it into visual layers. The ability to see geographic features on a map gives users a better understanding of a particular location, enabling planners, analysts, and others to make informed decisions about their communities.
Although you may not be aware of it, GIS touches our lives daily. It is used throughout the world to solve problems related to the environment, health care, land use, business efficiency, education, and public safety. The power supply directed to homes, the patrol cars and fire trucks that keep neighborhoods safe, and the delivery trucks on the road all function more efficiently because of GIS. This technology can also help businesses place ATMs and restaurants at more convenient locations, allow people to pull maps off the Internet, and help farmers grow more crops with less chemicals.

'Exciting Announcements' Scheduled for Morro Bay Friends
Of the Library Annual Board of Directors Election Meeting.
The Morro Bay Friends of the Library, which has been actively supporting the Morro Bay Public Library for more than 25 years, will review accomplishments of the past year and discuss significant needs--especially at this time of reductions in financial support of libraries--and challenges in the near future on Friday, Nov. 20, starting at 11:30 a.m. when the Friends hold their annual Board of Directors elections. The meeting will be in the Library Room of the Library, 625 Harbor Street.
The just-announced retirement of Jude Sanner Long, Morro Bay's popular, long-time librarian, is sure to be a topic of discussion at the gathering, although her service of nearly 35 years with the San Luis Obispo County Library System will be marked with a formal celebration on Jan. 24 at the library.
The meeting and program is open to the public and will include a free continental lunch on a first come, first served basis. The more than 300 Friends members are urged to attend to vote for officers. A quorum of members is needed to elect officers of the board.
"Some very exciting announcements" will be made at the meeting, Friends president Karen Robert (cq) said in the organization's fall, 2009, newsletter.
The continental lunch will be followed by a program featuring two Morro Bay chefs, Kirk Sowell of Frankie & Lola's restaurant and Shawn Washburn of Shawn's on Main. Participants will have the opportunity to taste some of their cuisine as well as learn about their experiences, behind the scenes stories, mishaps, having fun cooking, tricks of success with food, and more.
"If you have never come to a Friends meeting before, or if it has been a while since you have attended one, we really want you to come to this one!" Robert said of Friends members.
The support that Friends provides for the library is invaluable, and, as Robert noted, "It only takes one person to make a difference--and that person could be you."
Friends of the Library hosts book discussion groups on the first and third Wednesdays of the month, discussions on inspirational topics on the second Wednesday and readings by local authors and special presentations toward a celebration and appreciation of literature on most fourth Wednesdays. John Steinbeck, the Nobel Prize-winning author, who chronicled so many classic stories about California and its people, will be the topic of discussion on Nov.18 (his book "Travels with Charley In Search of America"). More details are available at http://www.morrobayfriendsoflibrary.org/.
Friends also holds regular book sales to raise funds for the library (Friends members are allowed access to the sales one hour prior to regular openings), provide volunteers to support library services and operations, publishes a newsletter distributed throughout the community four times a year, and builds and maintains awareness of library needs and services throughout the community. For more information contact Karen Robert at 772-9268.

“Anne Hills is such an exquisite singer that it’s understandable that people might be swept up in the pure beauty of her voice and thereby overlook her writing. That would be a mistake. For me, Anne’s writing, in songs like ‘Follow That Road’ and many others, is as direct, melodic and deep as any work being done today.
She is quite simply one of my absolute favorite songwriters.”
Tom Paxton.

Santa Barbara residents can capture and use rainwater with rain barrels being offered for purchase via Santa Barbara County’s one-day-only sale on Saturday, November 21st. This second event was planned due to the overwhelming response to the first sale in September. By using rain barrels to capture rainwater for landscape irrigation, residents will not only decrease demand on the municipal water supply but also help prevent water pollution by reducing runoff.
The rain barrel sale will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Saturday November 21st at Santa Barbara City College Parking Lot #3, at the corner of Shoreline Drive and Loma Alta Drive in Santa Barbara.
The SYSTERN Rain Barrels, which retail for more than $120.00, will be available for only $50.00, including tax, while supplies last on a first-come, first-served basis. Payment must be by cash or check only.
Additional information may be found on the rain barrel web page, www.sbwater.org/rainbarrel.

The San Luis Obispo Library offers the opportunity to explore the stark and seductive world of film noir in a new film series. Film noir is a genre of Hollywood crime dramas produced from the 1930s to the 1950s.
There will be a free screening of one film in the San Luis Obispo Library Community Room each month from November through April. Dates and times are:
• Saturday, November 21st, 2:00 – 5:00 p.m.
• Saturday, December 19th, 2:00 – 5:00 p.m.
• Wednesday, January 13th, 5:00 – 8:00 p.m.
• Wednesday, February 10th, 5:00 – 8:00 p.m.
• Wednesday, March 10th, 5:00 – 8:00 p.m.
• Wednesday, April 14th, 5:00 – 8:00 p.m.
After each screening, a local film expert will lead a discussion. Guest moderators include:
• Bob Whiteford and Jim Dee from KCBX Radio’s “Take Two”
• Bryce Wilson, film columnist for New Times
• Sarah Linn, film columnist for The Tribune
• Phil May, teacher of film appreciation at Cuesta College.
“I came up with the idea for this film series while watching a few old film noir movies and realized how well they stand up today,” said Audio-Visual Librarian Steve Kinsey. “They’re not your typical 1940s and ‘50s popular films. They are more realistic in their depictions of society which was born from the cynicism of the post-war era. So, I wanted to find a way to share these with the local film fans who may not have seen these great films before.”
The film noir series is free and no reservations are required. For film titles and more information, contact Steve Kinsey at (805) 781-1215.

Café Musique hails from the Central Coast of California. With the merging of five very different musical backgrounds, you have a sound that is a perfect blend of classical, swing, gypsy, folk, tango and originals.
Combining the beauty of the violin with the dynamic expression of the accordion, Café Musique has adopted the European Gypsy sound as their own. If you add compelling vocals with harmonies to the mix, along with timeless standards and new compositions, you begin to have an idea what the band is all about.
The members of Café Musique are Brynn Albanese on violin and vocals, Piper Heisig on percussion and vocals, Duane Inglish on accordion, Fred Murray on bass, and Craig Nuttycombe on guitar and vocals. Learn more about Café Musique here.

“Working with the Emotions”
With Dharma Teacher Bart Mendel -
Also December 27 -
Disturbing emotional states such as attachment, aggression, ignorance, pride and jealousy create confusion for ourselves and others. From a Buddhist point of view, emotions can be transformed into the wisdom energy of the enlightened mind. This course will explore how to work with emotions in meditation and in our daily lives.
Bart Mendel has been a Buddhist practitioner and teacher for over 30 years and has taught the Dharma extensively throughout the US , Canada and Europe . From years of mixing the dharma with an endless stampede of worldly challenges, Bart’s teaching style has evolved into a natural blend of eloquence, insightfulness and humor. In 1997, he accepted an invitation with his wife Suzan Garner to open a Bodhi Path Buddhist Center in Santa Barbara where he served as Resident Teacher for over ten years. Bart and Suzan oversee a number of major dharma projects, including serving as Directors for Siddhartha Foundation International.

The Cal Poly Symphony will feature music of Dvorák in its Fall Concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 22, in Harman Hall in the Performing Arts Center’s Christopher Cohan Center.
The concert will feature Dvorák's Symphony No. 9, "From the New World," written while the composer was living in America, where he had been invited to head the newly created National Conservatory of Music and help young American composers develop a distinctly American style. Symphony No. 9 is his attempt to write American music based on his research of African American spirituals, Native American music and surprisingly, Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, among other sources.
Also on the concert will be Dvorák's Slavonic Dance No. 8, one of the works that helped him earn a reputation for writing folk-inspired symphonic music. The winds will then explore his Serenade in D Minor, Op. 44, written directly before the Slavonic Dances.
Tickets for the concert are $6 for students, $8 and $10 for senior citizens, and $10 and $12 for the public. They are on sale at the Performing Arts Ticket Office 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. To order by phone, call SLO-ARTS (805-756-2787). Multi-media art show, August 30 through November 30 hosted by EOS Estate Winery, located at 5625 Highway 46 East in Paso Robles. The art includes paintings, sculptures, assemblage, and photography by a baker’s dozen of artists including Pat Argo, Jack Biesek, Dorothy Boyle, Norma Cole, April Coviello, Persia Dubois, Gary Garrett, Gail Lapins, Larry Le Brane, Sandra Lobos, Maggie Pickering, Penelope Monmonier and Lucie Ryan. The art work is based on the theme “Give of Your Soul…without expecting” which has far reaching interpretations. As Biesek aptly states “all my work is soul work as far as I am concerned.”
In addition to giving via the creative process, these artists are also giving for a good cause. Proceeds from raffle proceeds and 20% of art sales will benefit SLO CASA, a non-profit organization that provides “court appointed special advocates”. CASA volunteers speak for the best interests of abused and neglected children in court proceedings.
Raffle prizes include artwork, overnight accommodations, restaurant gift certificates, olive oil and wine. Raffle drawings are scheduled during the September 12th reception, from 3 to 7pm, and on November 30th. Raffle tickets can be purchased at EOS Estate Winery or by emailing .

Attend an information session about helping abused and neglected children. Men and Women over age 21 and bi-lingual volunteers needed!
CASA is a program in which trained community volunteers (CASAs) are appointed by a judge to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children in juvenile court proceedings.
There are approximately 500 abused and neglected children under the jurisdiction of the juvenile court in San Luis Obispo County. By becoming a CASA volunteer, you help ensure that these children receive needed services and a safe, permanent home. You’ll find being a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteer is a gratifying experience that touches not only the life of a child but yours as well.
We urge all perspective volunteers to attend an information session at the CASA office or select Starbucks locations.
The CASA Guild, a social networking and fundraising group, is also recruiting new members.
Information Sessions at the CASA office every fourth Wednesday of the month, 75 Higuera Suite 180, San Luis Obispo at noon.

Bring your favorite food or wine and something to share, which contributes to our sense of belonging.
Our Guest November 25 is Reginald Daniel PhD, Sociology Professor, UCSB.
“WHO WE REALLY ARE” - When we speak of “oneness,” it is usually in a spiritual sense. Our guest for November speaks of our oneness from an ancestral and genetic perspective, with insight and humor. He is a leader in the multiracial movement, which questions the continued enforcement of the “one drop” rule and argues that racial designations of “black and white” are increasingly antiquated. Reginald is author of More Than Black? Multiracial Identity and the New Racial Order, and Race and Multiraciality in Brazil and the United States

The last Sunday of the month Bob and Wendy invite a special guest for a relaxed afternoon concert where anything can happen. This month's guest is San Francisco guitarist and film maker, Jameson Swanagon.
From Jameson's website: "Jameson Swanagon is a guitar composer in the tradition of John Fahey and Leo Kottke, but with the pathetic minimalism of punk rock, and the experimentation of free jazz. His solo finger-style guitar concerts consist of short, dense improvisations as well as tightly composed vignettes he thinks of as sad toys."
