    Contact: Marta Peluso   (805) 544-9251   director@artsobispo.org
Los Osos artist Tera Galanti thinks globally with the most intimate of items. Her upcoming exhibition in ARTS Space Obispo titled THE SHIRT OFF YOUR BACK, includes an installation of artwork made from clothing that the artist collected from Hanoi, Bangkok, and Huntington Beach; as well as from local San Luis Obispo County thrift stores. The work will be on display in the SLO Creamery gallery from July 3 – 27, with an opening reception during Art After Dark on Friday, July 3 from 6 to 9 PM. The reception and exhibition are free and open to the public. According to Galanti, clothing is an element of global exchange as well as an index of its wearer’s experience. She sees this exhibition as serving as a point of intersection between the real and the imaginary. “The fabric artifacts form connections between the viewer and individuals who once inhabited them,” Galanti wrote. THE SHIRT OFF YOUR BACK is taking place concurrently with ARTS Obispo’s Wardrobe REVAMP workshops held on 5 consecutive Wednesdays beginning July 8th. The Workshops also involve clothing, but in a more functional way. Organizers invite participants to learn to rethink, recycle and recreate clothing, accessories and jewelry in this 3rd annual series of workshops.

It is aptly named "The United State of Perpetual Loss". “I’M DOING THIS TO GIVE THE IMAGERY OF THE “FLAGGED DRAPED CASKET”, AN ESSENCE OF THE LOSS, AS NOT ONLY BEING PHYSICAL, BUT ALSO SPIRITUAL AND HOW IT AFFECTS THE CONSCIOUSNESS OF THE LIVING, ON A GLOBAL SCALE”. Created By Alan Eric Hernandez 2009. The sculpture is considered a mixed media piece consisting of wood, fabric, acrylic mirrors, brick, paint, and lighting. The piece will measure 36"x24"x10" Standing approx 5.5' high. The other three sides of the piece will be covered in brick, depicting a wall that has been tagged with graffiti. The graffiti will be in several different languages, all saying, PEACE AND END WAR! “THE USE OF GRAFFITTI IS WORLDWIDE- SUCH AS THE EFFECT OF WAR. I WANTED TO DEPICT THIS GLOBAL MINDSET ON MY WALL IN THAT, WE ARE ALL AFFECTED BY THESE ONGOING CONFLICTS, AND MANKIND IS TIRED OF HATRED AND FEAR AND WHAT COMES FROM IT-----DEATH AND SADNESS”.     Broadway Actor, Singer and Dancer, Gale McNeeley, will appear in San Luis Obispo at Linnaea’s Café, 1110 Garden Street, Sunday, July 5th at 7 PM in his new show, “Over the Rainbow.” This show is a tribute to Yip Harburg ---the most famous lyricist you’ve never heard of.” GAle will be accompanied on piano by his musical partner Betty Faas. This show is appropriate for all ages. There is a suggested donation at the door of $10. The show will include Yip Harburg songs from “The Wizard of Oz,” “Finian’s Rainbow,” “A Day at the Circus,” and include popular hits like “April in Paris,” “It’s Only A Paper Moon,” “Buddy Can You Spare A Dime,” and “Lydia the Tattooed Lady.” Yip Harburg was the creative genius behind the lyrics and dialogue of “The Wizard of Oz.” He and Harold Arlen partnered on Movie & Broadway Musicals, and dozens of great songs. But, because Yip was blacklisted in Hollywood in the 50’s, many don’t know his name. Happily, we do remember his songs, like “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” “How Are Things in Glocca Morra,” “Old Devil Moon,” “Look to the Rainbow,” “If I Only Had A Brain,” “When I’m Not Near the Girl I Love,” and many more. Mr. McNeeley appeared on Broadway in “Two Gentlemen of Verona” with Jerry Stiller and Raul Julia, and “Cyrano” with Christopher Plummer. He has been seen locally at PCPA Theaterfest as the Ghost in “The Ghost & Mrs. Muir,” Herbie in “Gypsy” and Billy Bishop in “Billy Bishop Goes to War.” Founder of “The Satiricals”, Mr. McNeeley has also produced and appeared in his original political satires, “The Wizard of What?” and “Pope: The Musical,” as well as “Fred & Ginger,” “Tom Lehrer, Wayne and Schuster,” and his one-man show “Archy & Mehitabel.”

    Japanese Dance Lessons

It’s almost time for the annual Obon Festival, a Japanese celebration of the culture’s foods, arts, and traditions. Central to the Obon Festival is the Bon Odori, a traditional dance done specifically for the festival. The slow, methodical dance involves participants wearing colorful kimonos, yutaka or happi coats performing coordinated steps and arm movements to the calculated beat of the taiko drums. You don’t need any of these garments to participate, everyone is welcome! To participate in the Bon Odori, organizers of the festival are offering dance lessons for six weeks preceding the festival. The dance classes begin on Wednesday June 10th, 2009, and continue every Wednesday until the Festival on July 19th, 2009. The classes will take place from 6:30pm to 8:00pm. The dance classes are held at the Veteran’s Memorial Cultural Center, 313 W. Tunnel St in Santa Maria. Both the festival and the dance classes are free and open to the public. If you have them, bring your fan, towel and kachi kachi. If you don’t, we have plenty to share!

“Four stars…once you’ve seen [the two films] together, you’ll never want them to part.” - The Seattle Times

Two newly-restored shorts by legendary French filmmaker Albert Lamorisse, The Red Balloon and White Mane have enchanted the young – and the young at heart – for decades. One of the most beloved children’s films of all time and winner of the Palme d’Or at the 1956 Cannes Film Festival, The Red Balloon is a deceptively simple, nearly wordless tale in which a young boy discovers a stray balloon wandering the streets of Paris and the two become inseparable. Beloved by generations of French children and presented with new English translation, White Mane is set in a near-desert region in the south of France where a magnificent stallion and a young boy build a strong friendship, but they must elude the wrangler and his herdsmen to live freely.     “Day-To-Day Buddhism” With Dharma Teacher Khedrup Zangmo

This meditation practice and teaching will focus on bringing our practice into our lives and world. Buddhism offers many methods to relieve suffering in our own lives and in the lives of others. Nobody wants to suffer and everyone wants to be happy. Learning to meditate with trained guidance can ease our suffering and truly transform our lives. Learning to take these experiences out in the world truly transforms us and the world we live in. We will discuss taking our sitting and other practices into our daily lives and finding the space in our busy lives for practice. Khedrub Zangmo has been studying and practicing Buddhism for over 25 years. Under the guidance of the highly respected meditation master Lama Gendun Rinpoche, she took monastic vows and completed two consecutive three-year retreats at Dhagpo Kundreul Ling in central France . After completing her second retreat in 1997, Khedrub lived in the women’s monastery established by Gendun Rinpoche and began teaching Buddhism in centers, schools and organizations in Europe and in the USA . At the request of Shamar Rinpoche, Khedrub moved back to the US in 2000. Khedrub is currently a resident teacher of the Pasadena Bodhi Path Center.

    Contact: Nancy Friedland   805-957-1115   info@sbjf.org
This exhibit features a select group of California Jewish artists whose work incorporates diverse approaches, media and techniques. Art at the JCC is pleased to announce the exhibition "Contemporary Expressions: Jewish Artists", a selection of over 30 paintings, etchings, prints, photographs, works on paper, mixed assemblage, and sculptures from accomplished artists whose ages range upward through four generations. These include local and nationally recognized artists, including: Rebekah Altman, Rita Blitt, Chantal Braley, Jordyn Feiger, Louise Gerber, Gadi Hakim, Marilyn Hochhauser, Norman Jaffe, Rose Jaffe, Erika Kahn, Marsha Keating, Barbara Kuhn, Eyal Nahmias, Chelsea Owens, Ross Payson, Bonnie Rand, Joan Rosenberg-Dent, Maria Segal, Lita Singer, Margaret Singer, Morris Squire and Jana Zimmer. With its emphasis on high quality artworks, this collection provides a chance to appreciate the many ways in which artists young and old, male and female, convey their essence, physicality, experience, and the role that ethnicity plays in their creative process. Lynn Holley, curator and inspiration of the show, said, "We wanted to explore how one’s cultural heritage impacts artistic expression, whether in writing, music or in the visual and performing arts. In some cases this is overt; in others, it’s more subtle.” Shulamit Reinharz, Ph.D., a sociologist at Brandeis University, posed a question to contemporary Jewish artist Rita Blitt: "Is Jewish art any art produced by a Jewish artist, regardless of content? Is Jewish art any art product that focuses on a specifically Jewish theme? Where does the Jewishness lie -- in the artist or in the art?" This exhibition of Jewish artists may or may not reflect the views of Professor Reinharz, but the artists and art reflect a diversity in gender, age, subject matter and medium that makes it a compelling and creative exhibition for the greater Santa Barbara community.

The author of a full-length collection, The Fortunate Islands, published by Marick Press, and five previous chapbooks, DeWitt has published poems in journals across the nation, including Poetry, Prairie Schooner, New Letters, and North American Review. Series director Kevin Clark said that DeWitt seems to have ingeniously transformed Robert Frost’s vision into a contemporary woman’s perception of nature. A winner of the Cal Poly Distinguished Teaching Award, John Hampsey has published Paranoia and Contentment with the University of Virginia Press. Part essay and part fiction, the book explores the way we create, exploit and abuse fear in our lives. “John grew up with a bunch of crazies in his neighborhood, other boys who had abusive or nonexistent parents,” Clark remarked, “and his urban adventure stories about the troubles he encountered with these ‘friends’ are both highly entertaining and often disturbing.” Science North is on North Poly View Drive (sometimes called Inner Perimeter Road) between the Faculty Office Building North (47) and Faculty Office building East (25).

“Seductive and beautifully made, it could be the date movie of the year for performing arts fans.” - The Hollywood Reporter

Fados completes the musical trilogy of award-winning filmmaker Carlos Saura (Flamenco, 1995; Tango, 1998). Using Lisbon as a backdrop and featuring performers Carlos do Carmo, Mariza and Lila Downs among others, he explores Portugal’s most emblematic musical genre (fado) and its haunting spirit of saudade (melancholy). Tracing its African and Brazilian origins up to the new wave of modern faudistas, he ingeniously frames each song in a ravishing fusion of cinema, song, dance and instrumental numbers to create one of the finest “World Music” soundtracks to date.     Festival Mozaic is a celebration of five centuries of music held year-round in spectacular venues on California's picturesque Central Coast. From Bach and beyond to Mozart and more, our world-class Festival presents diverse programs and dynamic international artists in chamber music and orchestral concerts, early music ensembles, and unique performances that combine classical training with jazz and world music. From July 16-26, 2009, Festival Mozaic explores music that is deeply rooted in specific regions, places and cultures. From Western and Central Europe to South America and the American South, the Festival will take you on distant musical journeys...right here on California’s beautiful Central Coast. No matter which setting resonates with you, Festival Mozaic is the place to be this summer. The international roster of musicians who join the Festival each year will explore these themes through the music of Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Copland, Grieg, Golijov, Stravinsky and Bartók among others, in performances of chamber music, orchestral works, and classical ‘cross-genre’ music in more than 16 concerts and events. New this year, the Festival is introducing a series of new concert formats, Notable Encounters, which are shorter ‘cocktail-hour’ concerts where musicians add lively commentary to a ‘set’ of chamber music. Over 7,000 audience members enjoy concerts in historic and spectacular Festival sites such as Hearst Castle, the historic San Luis Obispo Mission, and the hilltop venue of Chapel Hill in Paso Robles’ wine country, and in San Luis Obispo County’s scenic wineries, parks and gardens. In addition to having a world-class music experience, visitors take advantage of the Central Coast’s abundance of fine wineries, restaurants, hiking, biking, boating and seaside activities.

Subscriptions go on sale to the public on April l & single tickets go on sale June 1.

“Working with the Emotions” withDharma Teacher Bart Mendel

July 19 & August 30, 10 am to noon

Disturbing emotional states such as attachment, aggression, ignorance, pride and jealousy create confusion for ourselves and others. From a Buddhist point of view, emotions can be transformed into the wisdom energy of the enlightened mind. This course will explore how to work with emotions in meditation and in our daily lives. Bart Mendel has been a Buddhist practitioner and teacher for over 30 years and has taught the Dharma extensively throughout the US , Canada and Europe . From years of mixing the dharma with an endless stampede of worldly challenges, Bart’s teaching style has evolved into a natural blend of eloquence, insightfulness and humor. In 1997, he accepted an invitation with his wife Suzan Garner to open a Bodhi Path Buddhist Center in Santa Barbara where he served as Resident Teacher for over ten years. Bart and Suzan oversee a number of major dharma projects, including serving as Directors for Siddhartha Foundation International.

    Santa Maria/Guadalupe Obon Festival

The annual Obon (O-BOHN) Festival will be celebrated at the Veteran’s Memorial Cultural Center on Sunday, July 19th, 313 W Tunnel St in Santa Maria. The festival is presented by the Guadalupe Buddhist Church. The rich cultural celebration will be held from noon until 5 pm. The festival is open and free to the public. Adults and children can expect to enjoy a variety of food and entertainment. The free festival offers an experience complete with traditional dance, food, music, and demonstrations. Bonsai, Taiko Drums, Martial Arts and Crafts will be some of the day’s events. One of the main attractions is the Bon Odori. The dance is a tradition to the festival, with dancers clad in kimonos, or yutaka, and Happi coats. Everyone will be dancing to the graceful rhythm of the taiko drums. The festival will end with a raffle drawing for cash and many other items. 1st prize is $1,500, 2nd prize is $500, 3rd prize is $300; there are six 4th prizes at $100. Other raffle items include gift certificates to restaurants, hardware and retail stores, car care, and more. Tickets for the raffle may be purchased at the festival and you need not be present to win. Teriyaki chicken dinner, sushi, beef sticks (kushiyaki), udon, won ton and strawberry shortcake are among the foods available for purchase. Come early, food for purchase is limited! The Obon Festival can be traced to a Buddhist sutra that tells the story of Mogallana, a disciple of Budda who, in meditation, saw his deceased mother suffering in the realm of hungry ghosts. He tried giving her food but it turned into flames. Buddha advised him to engage in a “jishi”, or retreat, and make an offering for his fellow monks. This done, he saw his mother released from suffering and he danced for joy. Varying interpretations evolved over the years, including the belief that spirits of ancestors actually revisit this world. Pine torches are attached to bamboo to welcome spirits to the family home, and on the final day of the observance, spirits are said to return to the nether world, guided by candle-lit lanterns that are set adrift on water. Obon remains one of the most important Buddhist observances. The typical Obon is a blend of somber reflection and celebration of those before us. Adults and children…come, enjoy and be happy!

The Old Time Band is Peter Feldmann on mandolin, guitar, and banjo, joined by one of the finest fiddlers in the Southwest, Bruce Thompson, and by banjo virtuoso Wayne Shrubsall, long-time performer and columnist for the Banjo Newsletter. They promise you a fast-paced, entertaining program of some of the best traditional old-time and pre-bluegrass music. Peter has been presenting bluegrass, folk, string band, and related musics since the early 1960's, and is known as the founder of the Santa Barbara Old Time Fiddler's Convention and the original Bluebird Café, a Santa Barbara music club highly influential on the Southern California Music scene. Our experience tells us that the best way to help the most people is to focus on the underlying causes of the most serious problems. We’re focused on critical issues like early childhood education, financial stability for working families, and healthcare. It takes the whole community working together to reach our goals in these areas. So we bring together people from across the community, from government, business, faith groups, non profits and neighborhoods. Narrated by actor Chris Noth (Law & Order, Sex and the City), Call of the Killer Whale combines science and discovery with expert storytelling and astonishing HD footage on the most complex marine species on the planet, the orca or “killer whale.” A global endeavor for Cousteau, learning more about orcas required travel to both the northern and southern hemispheres in a critical examination of our environment and how the threats to killer whales intersect with human lives. (2009) Co-presented with the Carsey-Wolf Center for Film, Television, and New Media’s Environmental Media Initiative and the Blue Horizons Summer Program for Environmental Media.

7:00 PM  -  9:00 PM Scott Williams: Hammered Dulicmer concert
    Contact: Coalesce Bookstore   772-2880   coalesce@charter.net
With Celtic, colonial, medieval, rock, and Renaissance influences, Scott has developed a repertoire of songs on the hammered dulcimer which he now performs at Downtown Disney, concerts, corporate events, private parties, street and Renaissance festivals throughout Orange County, Central and Northern California, Las Vegas, and San Diego. As a multi-instrumentalist, Scott plays and records the majority of what he calls his "backing tracks." These tracks are studio mixes of guitars, cello, bass, drums, mountain dulcimer, mandolins, and synthesizers to create the foundation of his music. He then performs live with the hammered dulcimer to combine the sounds for a presentation of what sounds like a full ensemble. Scott has four studio albums, The Burning of the Piper's Hut (American folk / colonial), The Road to Lisdoonvarna (Celtic), Home for the Holidays (Christmas), and Tristan of the Western Sea (massage / yoga / meditation). A new CD he is currently recording is all rock and roll covers and will include 'Stairway to Heaven', The Cure's 'Just Like Heaven', Billy Idol's 'White Wedding', and Elton John's 'Daniel'. The CD after that will be the much awaited DULCITALLICA of all Metallica songs. Since the hammered dulcimer is such an unusual instrument, people are very drawn to it. Children, especially, find it mesmerizing. "It's perhaps the best part of this adventure," Scott says, "…watching the expressions on children's faces, talking to them, and the best is letting them play the dulcimer. There are always several that leave an impact on me whenever I play. It's very heartfelt and magical."

Patrick ZIMMERLI(Zimmerli music samples on MySpace) Piano Trio No. 2. Scott Yoo, violin. Bion Tsang, cello. John Novacek, piano. We invite you to an evening you can only get here—a concert featuring Festival Mozaic Music Director Scott Yoo’s favorite chamber works to play, with some of the best of America’s young generation of chamber musicians. In 1892, Dvo?ák was invited to direct a newly-established National Conservatory in New York, founded with the help of the Carnegies and Vanderbilts. Though the Conservatory sadly did not survive the Great Depression, Dvo?ák’s immense love for American musical idioms resulted in this beautiful work composed in the American heartland. Young American composer Patrick Zimmerli draws on another indigenous American music—jazz. This trio, premiered and recorded by Scott Yoo and John Novacek, is a Brahmsian sweep using jazz tonalities.

“Understanding the Relationship between Thoughts, Emotions and True Happiness in Body and Mind” withDharma Teacher Dawa Tarchin Phillips

July 26 & August 23, 10 am to noon

How does your mind work and manifest thoughts, feelings and your perceptions? What is the underlying reality of your being? Every moment of every day you are involved in, and dealing with the manifestations of your body and the experiences and expressions of your mind. They make up who you are and what you identify with most intimately. As you go through life, you experience manifold different states of physical and mental challenges in the search of well-being. During this teaching series we will explore the Buddha’s advice on how to correctly view the reality of ones body and the productions of ones mind when our aim is to reduce suffering. Teachings based on the 5 Skandhas and 51 Mental Events. Buddhist Dharma Teacher Dawa Tarchin Phillips completed two 3-year meditation retreats as a student of the Mahamudra meditation master Gendun Rinpoche at Dhagpo Kundreul Ling Monastery in France where he received the transmission of the Karma Kagyu Lineage. Prior to focusing on meditative practices, Dawa pursued advanced studies in the arts, a career in the entertainment industry and worked with severely ill cancer and cardiac patients. Today, he teaches throughout Europe and the US , offering guidance to those on the spiritual path and is the resident teacher of Bodhi Path Center Santa Barbara.

“A nearly impeccable work of art – beautiful, true, profound.” - The New York Times

Adapted from a Balzac novella, the scintillating film by French filmmaker Jacques Rivette The Duchess of Langeais tells the story of Antoinette (Jeanne Balibar), a married coquette who frequents the most extravagant balls in 1820’s Paris during The Restoration. Flattered by the attentions of the handsome General de Montriveau (Guillaume Depardieu), the alluring Antoinette orchestrates a calculating game of seduction. When Montriveau’s passion remains unfulfilled and he seeks his revenge Antoinette’s love awakens, but it may well be too late for the star-crossed lovers. (2007, 130 min.)

7:00 PM  -  10:00 PM City Nights Jazz presents Vocalist Sacha Boutros

City Nights Jazz presents Vocalist Sacha Boutros, performing with the Mike Raynor Group on Friday July 31st. Boutros has been busy touring Japan and recently Hawaii, promoting her new CD "Simply Sacha." For more information go to www.CityNightsJazz.com - A Little bit about Sacha... A local native of San Diego, Sacha Boutros has been captivating audiences with her sultry vocals and exquisite style as she posses a charm and grace reminiscent of the golden age of Hollywood. Having played the piano since she was a little girl, she began composing at an early age. As a child she was introduced to musical harmonies and playful lyrical songwriting by her grandfather; "He taught me to sing the harmonies in church and I later sang in the choir and show choir growing up. My grandmother was the one who introduced me to the piano, she started me with piano lessons when I was 4, I had to sit on a pillow to reach the keys." With a four-octave range she is well versed in classical music and can sing in just about any language as she speaks five fluently. "I learned how to sing Bel Canto. I decided when I was going to learn how to sing properly I should start from the beginning, with opera! I studied Bel Canto for several years and sang many Broadway scores as I perform musical theatre as well." What they're saying about Sacha... "Sacha Boutros is a jazz singer. This is to be differentiated from those who merely sing jazz. While the gorgeous pipes are a nice accoutrement, it's her exquisite phrasing, her ability to caress a lyric, her absolute control over her voice that collectively make her into a jazz musician. Her ability to move seamlessly from jazz into bossa nova, Latin and popular vehicles on her new album only confirms that here is a talent to cherish." -Jim Trageser, music critic, North County Times / publisher, editor. "Simply Sacha is Simply Marvelous!" Robb 'Jazzbro' Peterson, KTUH FM 90.3 in Honolulu.
