   1:00 PM  -  3:00 PM Yogathon
    Contact: Jenny Brantlee   805.234.7279   jennyb.yogawave@gmail.com
For the fourth year in a row, yogis of all levels will gather at the Morro Bay Veteran’s Menorial Hall to accomplish a feat many can only imagine doing: 108 sun salutations. A sun salutation is a series of yoga poses that most anyone in fair-to-good shape can do, and they are performed with instruction in such a way that the 2-hour long “Yogathon” gets easier by the minute. The free event begins at 1 p.m. and usually draws about 50 people to do the 108, also called a mala, and another dozen or so to watch and support those doing.

The event’s organzier, Jenny Brantlee of Yogawave.us, says: “Most people come to simply try a few rounds. And then, once their bodies get into the rhythm of the sequence, they stay and oftentimes complete the entire 108. The part we’re all amazed by is how quickly it goes by, and how it truly becomes easier the more you do. What one thinks will be a chore winds up being a gift to the body, mind, and soul. But do be prepared to sweat and to have a little muscle soreness the next day.”

Yoga mats are provided, and the Morro Bay Veteran’s Hall is located at 208 Surf Street, off Main Street in Morro Bay. For more information, please contact Jenny at (805) 234-7279 or visit www.yogawave.us (which has a printable flier of the sun salutation sequence) or jennyb.yogawave@gmail.com.

She has self-produced two albums, “Reverie” with The Bill Peterson Trio (2005), and "Learning How To Fly" with Trio 14 and Linda Vanasupa (2003). In addition to these collaborative efforts, Inga has performed with internationally known pianist, composer and improviser Art Lande. She has performed multiple times with the Leon Anderson Quartet culminating in a performance at Carnegie Hall in May of 2005.    7:00 PM Kenny Blackwell/Dorian Michael Concert
    Contact: Jonas Richardson/Stuart Mason   805-528-4530   stu@helmintoller.com
The Red Barn Community Music Series is proud to present the music of Kenny Blackwell and Dorian Michael on Saturday, January 3 at the Red Barn at the South Bay Community Center. Local virtuosos Dorian Michael (guitar) and Kenny Blackwell (mandolin) will present a tasteful collection of eclectic acoustic tunes and songs.

Mandolinist Kenny Blackwell studied with Jethro Burns before moving to California where he joined fiddler Richard Green's band in '93. His mandolin and guitar work have been heard in TV and movie scores. Since '94, he has been a constant member of the famed Laurel Canyon Ramblers. Guitarist Dorian Michael has played in about every style and in every type of work situation a blue collar musician could hope for. After years of honky-tonk electric guitar followed by concentrating on solo fingerstyle guitar this project is a whole new challenge.

After Kenny and Dorian met by chance in a music store in San Luis Obispo, then at a backyard jam session, and again at a music convention in Los Angeles, they decided it was time to play some music together. Kenny, one of California's foremost mandolinists, wanted a chance to play outside of the bluegrass genre in which he is constantly in demand. Guitarist Dorian Michael was looking for a skillful musician who understood a wide variety of roots music. Six months later their first CD was released and they were touring as a duo. The duo's diverse backgrounds are the wellspring for a performance of exciting and heartfelt music. Their enthusiasm for making music and their respect for their audience is plainly evident whenever they perform. Says Dorian, "Some music makes you feel deeply, some music makes you think and some tunes are played just for the sheer fun of it. We like to try to get to all those places in the space of a concert."

The Red Barn is located at the South Bay Community Center, 2180 Palisades Avenue, next to the skate park in Los Osos.

The show begins at 7:00 PM, with pot luck supper.

     VITA Volunteers Needed
    Contact: Carol Fleury   805-544-4355   cfleury@eocslo.org
Make a big difference in someone’s life and volunteer for the VITA Program. VITA, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program is sponsored locally by the Economic Opportunity Commission and United Way. The VITA Program is an IRS-sponsored national program that has volunteers provide low-to-moderate income households with free tax preparation services. Trained Volunteer Tax Assistors learn the many special credits and deductions and how people may claim them on their tax returns. Volunteers then help individuals complete and electronically file their returns – all for free.

Who are these volunteers? People just like you – businessmen and women, members of volunteer or community organizations, college students, law students, and homemakers. You name it. Volunteer Tax Assistors receive free instruction and training and all training and certification materials necessary to prepare basic income tax returns. Although tax time may seem a long way away, now is the time to sign up. Training and certification is completed in January and can be done online at any time or through in-person trainings held January 10, 17, and 24, 2009 in San Luis Obispo.

Volunteers are also needed to help in other ways. We are also looking for greeters, translators, child care helpers and outreach workers. If you have a skill and would like to help, we can find a way to involve you in the program. We have sites in San Luis Obispo, Paso Robles and Grover Beach. If you or your organization wants to get involved and would like more information about the VITA Program, please contact Carol Fleury or Danijela Dornan at the EOC: 805-544-4355, or visit us on the web at www.eocslo.org.

9:00 AM  -  11:00 AM Buddhist Meditation Seminar
    Contact: Craig Dingman   466-4547   craigdingman@mail.com
The North County White Heron Buddhist Sangha begins each New Year by re-examining Buddhism’s foundation principles. This year, the sangha (which means “community” in Sanskrit) will commence its return to basics with a two-hour meditation training session, set to take place on Sunday January 11 at 9 a.m. in the Community Room of the Atascadero Library.

Led by members of the sangha, including Zen priest Amber Komei Larson, the tutorial will include guidance in three basic meditation techniques – “insight” meditation, Zen meditation and walking meditation. “In this time of increasing anxiety,” Larson says, “well-focused mindfulness can help us achieve a genuine sense of personal well-being. Meditation is not exclusive to Buddhism, but is an important element of most religious traditions, its mode of practice varying widely. “We meditate during each of our regular Sangha meetings,” Larson explained, “but few of our members sit cross-legged, Buddha-style. In fact, most prefer meditating while seated in a chair, just as I do. And each may employ a different meditative technique. So, we welcome practitioners of all beliefs.” Larson said the seminar is also meant to serve as introduction to the Sangha’s return to a general review of basic Buddhist thought. Sunday following the meditation seminar, January 18th, the sangha will begin reviewing the opening chapters of a well-respected Buddhist text, titled The Tree of Enlightenment. Anyone interested in learning more about basic Buddhist philosophy is welcome to attend.

The Tree of Enlightenment text books are donated and will be distributed without charge to members and newcomers alike. The seminar will begin promptly at 9 a.m. and conclude at 11 a.m. on Sunday January 11, and will include a tea, coffee and refreshments break. The library is located at 6850 Morro Road in Atascadero. Questions may be directed to Craig Dingman at 466-4547

    Contact: Shaba Mohseni   805-546-8077   shaba@cencalcycling.com
Join us at Talley Vineyards, where the beauty of the countryside meets the grit of a challenging cyclocross race amongst the vines. Cyclocross is a unique bicycle race that engages the competitor in a variety of terrains from trails to grass to pavement and sand. Natural and forced barriers on the course also require the racer to dismount and remount their bike throughout the race. It is a visibly entertaining sport, hailing from Europe and growing very quickly in the United States.

Talley VineCross is an event that offers the best of the country, delicious wines, and a fun day with family and friends in the courtyard BBQ/picnic area. Racers will compete on a challenging but fun dirt course that takes them on an adventure through the Talley farmland and vineyards. This 1.8- mile circuit consists of dirt roads looping through the vineyard valley floor and several terrace areas. Technical hill climbs and descents and natural barrier sections consisting of grassy culvert crossings keep the racers on their toes.

Family, friends, neighbors and fans are all welcome. A truly spectator-friendly course, enjoy BBQ and wine by the glass in the beautiful courtyard. Scan the 1.8 mile circuit on high from the comfort of the tasting terrace or meander among the vines at your favorite turn on the loop.

For this event, Talley Vineyards is offering fantastic deals on full glasses of their Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Rock Solid Red, ranging from $3 to $4.50 per glass!

A full and delicious BBQ meal, (vegetarian option as well), will be available for $7 thanks to Fred Sweeney, BBQ-extraordinaire. BBQ and wine will start at 11am and go until 3:30pm

Get More Info: Registration links, directions, and complete details on the day’s activities including kids' and fun races are at www.cencalcycling.com under the Talley VineCross menu tab.

Anyone who has not experienced cyclocross will be impressed by the unique excitement of this colorful sport!

It’s time to register for YMCA Roller Hockey being offered in San Luis Obispo and Five Cities from March 14 through June 6. This league is targeted to children and youth, ages 5 through 17, and will give your child a healthy workout in as little as one hour. Targeted to all skill levels, including beginners, the Roller Hockey program was developed to offer children an alternative sport that provides great body conditioning without the “down time” seen in other sports such as baseball. Even if your child doesn’t know how to skate, they are encouraged to try this sport. The YMCA’s experienced coaches will teach all of the fundamentals of the sport, including how to skate, as well as how to improve skating for the sport. An introductory clinic and equipment swap meet will be held at Santa Rosa Park in San Luis Obispo on Saturday, February 28th from 10:00 a.m. to noon. The clinic is free and is a great way for those who may be interested to learn more about the sport. The Roller Hockey program strives to encourage skill development, self-confidence, and positive peer interaction. It also provides a unique opportunity for parents to share quality time with the children and have fun doing it! Fee for the season is $75 and an additional $15 annual program membership fee may apply if not already paid for the year. Register before February 13th at the SLO County YMCA Fitness Facility and save $5 on your early registration fee.     On Friday, January 16th the Los Olivos Schoolhouse Music Series, a series of three fine chamber music concerts, opens its twenty-eighth season with the return of cellist Ruslan Biryukov and pianist Mary Au.

Ruslan Biryukov was born in Baku, Azerbaijan, graduated from the Baku Music Academy, Tchaikovsky Moscow Conservatory and USC Thornton School of Music. He has collaborated with Mstislav Rostropovich and Seiji Ozawa in venues worldwide. His performances bring impressions of his native country as well as a reverence for the traditions of musical expression, art and beauty his selections represent.

Mary Au, a well-known and gifted chamber music collaborator and piano accompianist, is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Music and the University of Southern California. Ms Au collaborated in recitals and master classes with renowned artists such as Mstislav Rostropovich and has been an executive of the GRAMMY Awards. She has performed at the IFEA Award winning Nanning International Arts Festival in China.

Their program includes Chopin’s Polonaise Brillante, Luigi Boccherini’s Sonata No. 6 in A Major, Claude Debussy’s Sonate pour violocelle et piano, Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Vocalise, and Karl Davidov’s Allegro de Concert. Alfred Shnittke’s Suite im alten stil , an example of “polystilism”, a 20th century, where music of different styles both past and present are juxtaposed. The amazing Pacific Trio will return to the series on Saturday, January 31st. Edith Orloff, pianist, and John Walz, cellist, have played together since high school, and Roger Wilkie, violinist, joined the trio in the last few years. On Friday, February 27th the Schoolhouse Music Evenings welcomes for the first time Mezzo Soprano Iris Mllkin with pianist Linda Zoolalian and guitarist Edward Trybeck.

    Animal Tracks Walk

Join Eval Albright, an animal track expert, to find out who is "tracking up" the Elfin Forest. Evan will demonstrate how to tell which are the front feet or back feet of a raccoon, and what the difference if between coyote tracks and dog tracks. Visitors will learn to look for other signs that a wild resident of the Elfin Forest has passed that way, such as hairs on a fence or "scoot" marks where the animal squeezed through a fence hole. This walk will open up a complex world of the Elfin Forest's inhabitants, one that we would never suspect while walking along the boardwalk. Walks in the Elfin Forest meet at 9:30 a.m. at the north end of 15th St. off of Santa Ysabel in Los Osos (unless otherwise noted). Proceed up the path to the boardwalk, where the walk will begin. Wear comfortable shoes, long sleeves and pants to avoid poison oak. Please park carefully, avoiding driveways and mailboxes. Please leave pets at home. The easy paced walks last 1-1/2 to 2 hours.

GARBAGE WARRIOR, a documentary about Michael Reynolds, a visionary architect based in Taos, New Mexico, where, for years, he has attempted to combat global warming by building ecologically sustainable houses out of scrap; old tires, tin cans and bottles. Not surprisingly, he falls foul of local and state governments because he won’t conform. But his ideas prove invaluable to survivors of the Tsunami in the Andaman Islands. This is a straightforwardly good documentary by Oliver Hodge about the sort of man society should be embracing but instead is frustrating. In showing Reynolds’s lifetime crusade against waste it pinpoints clearly why the whole climate change argument is such an agonizing one – people in authority, whether bureaucrats or elected officials, find it virtually impossible to think about something as basic as the design of a house from a completely different perspective. GARBAGE WARRIOR deserves to be widely seen. It was shot over a long period of time and reveals a man who won’t take No for an answer even when all the odds are stacked against him.

"No living animals have captured our imaginations as have the great whales . . . They fire our imaginations and stab at our emotions. They inspire our art, literature, and music. And so they should. The indescribable blend of grace, power, and beauty of a whale as it glides underwater, leaps towards the sky, or simply lifts its flukes and slides into the sea symbolizes a vanishing poetry of the wild."     Pavlo is a composer, a guitarist, a singer and a recording artist. He composes in a style of music best described as “Mediterranean music,” which combines the influences of Flamenco, Latin, Classical and Mediterranean guitar mixed together with the Greek Bouzouki. He brings with him a group of talented musicians: George Vasilakos, playing the Bouzouki and Guitar; Gino Mirizio, on piano and percussion (timbale, congas, bongos, cajon, djembe, dumbek, ud, and the traditional drum kit.) Gino's approach to the percussion instruments is unique, as he plays them all at the same time in a very innovative set up; Randy Rodrigues on Bass Guitar. He’s also a singer/song writer; and Spyros Gazetos playing Bouzouki, Bass and Keyboards. The Comcox Valley Record had this to say about Pavlo: “Six acclaimed albums and one Juno Award later (for “2004 World Artist of the Year”), Pavlo continues to grow in demand. With ever-increasing television and film credits, commissioned works and an invitation to perform for His Royal Highness Prince Charles in 2001, Pavlo is fast blazing a path toward international superstardom.     Contact: Michele Abba   805-756-2406   music@calpoly.edu
Cal Poly’s Early Music Ensemble will present works of the California missions.

The concert, titled "Masters of the Mission" will feature works that were reconstructed by Cal Poly Music Professor and noted California mission music scholar Craig Russell from the original sources in the missions. The Early Music Ensemble will be joined by a small instrumental group, including Russell on baroque guitar. Cal Poly Music Professor Thomas Davies will conduct the performance.

Some of the repertoire for the concert is drawn from the manuscripts of Juan Bautista Sancho, a friar at Mission San Antonio in the first decades of the 19th century, including a selection from his "Misa de Los Angeles" and ‘Credo’ and ‘Sanctus’ from “Misa en Sol.”

In addition, the ensemble will perform the mass “Misa del quarto tono para 4 voces” (“Mass in Mode 4 for 4 voices”). The music was found in the choirbooks of Narciso Durán, who served at Mission San José in the early 1800s.

Movements from masses by Ignacio de Jerusalem, the chapel master in Mexico City from 1750-1769, will also be performed, as well as a few selections in plainchant from the California choirbooks.

Works from the Corpus Christi processions will be included. Parades and ceremony were indispensable tools of the friars in their goal to convert the native Californians to the Christian faith, according to Russell, who calls some of the parade pieces “quite lovely and lilting.”

The group will also perform a couple of villancicos by Manuel de Sumaya. Villancicos are church pieces meant to imitate in style the music actually heard in popular culture in the plaza, ranch, field, or city street.

    Contact: Jim Keating   805-458-8734   info@slomra.org
The San Luis Obispo Model Railroad Association and the Oceano Depot Association will be co-hosting a special Model Railroad Day Open House on Sunday, January 25th. The Open House will run from 10:00am until 4:00pm and is a FREE COMMUNITY EVENT. The Oceano Depot is located between Highway One and the railroad tracks in “downtown” Oceano just south of the track overpass.

The SLOMRA will be featuring several operating train layouts in HO, O, and N scales. The entire Oceano Depot, including the newly refurbished 1900's era caboose will be open to display its artifacts from Oceano and the adjacent railroad. Although this event will be a fundraiser and member development event for both organizations, the real intent of the Open House is to share the history of trains and love of model railroading with the community.

Local train buffs, historians and kids of all ages are encouraged to spend the day at the Depot! A model train Yard Sale will feature great deals on new and used model railroad items. A weekend, all-inclusive, round-trip Amtrak train ride to the Sacramento Railroad Museum will be raffled off at this event. Tickets are $1 each, or a book of 12 tickets for $10. There will be hot dogs, drinks and popcorn for purchase. Free Train hats will be available for children. Since the model train yard sale is benefiting the SLOMRA, members are seeking model train items for donations. Any one interested in donating any tax-deductible items for this yard sale, should email Jim Keating: info@slomra.org. Special offers are also being extended to individuals who become SLOMRA members during this event!

BLOODLINES AND BANDITS

GET ENGAGED WITH GREAT CHAMBER MUSIC IN A UNIQUE WAY

Engage with great chamber music throughout the year with Festival Mozaic’s WinterMezzo Series. This year, Bloodlines and Bandits brings you two unique programs showcasing both musical flattery and out-right thievery in some of the world’s greatest chamber music pieces.

Each musical program includes two events to choose from;
• An evening Notable Encounter, where wine country, culinary craftsmanship and the festival’s virtuoso musicians converge in a casual café-style musical tasting menu. You’ll enjoy an intimate buffet dinner and wine with the guest artists and fellow music lovers before sitting down for a one-hour ‘insider’s perspective’, as the musicians play, talk and engage with you on this season’s great chamber music.
• The full Concert delivers the dynamic force of these great works performed in their in their entirety by the festival’s nationally-acclaimed guest artists.

Enjoy one or both events to satisfy your winter musical cravings.

Program II
Friday, January 30, 2009 6pm – NOTABLE ENCOUNTER
Saturday, January 31, 2009 8pm – CONCERT

Bandits
In the sincerest form of flattery, talent copies but genius steals. A program of out- right musical larceny in astonishing musical sleights-of-hands by master musical thieves.

Francis Poulenc - Trio for Oboe, Bassoon, and Piano
Anne Marie Gabriele, oboe
Tariq Masri, bassoon
John Novacek, piano
Filching forms from Haydn and Saint-Saëns and melodic structures from Beethoven and Mozart, this most famous of Poulenc chamber music works is a lively and lyrical musical dialogue of tonal color.

Ludwig v. Beethoven - Magic Flute Variations for Cello and Piano, Wo0 46
Trevor Handy, cello; John Novacek, piano
Variations from one musical giant written on the theme of another. The duet "Bei Mannern, welche Liebe fuhlen" from Mozart’s opera, The Magic Flute, becomes the basis for these lively variations.

Georgy Sviridov - Piano Trio
Scott Yoo, violin; Trevor Handy, cello; John Novacek, piano
Completed in just 12 days, this piano trio by one of Shostakovich’s finest students borrows directly from Shostakovich’s own Piano Trio (composed one year earlier), adding further stylistic touches that echo Tchaikovsky.

    Contact: Margie Bushman   805-962-2571   margie@sbpermaculture.org
In honor of International Seed Swap Day, Santa Barbara Permaculture Network presents Lorenz Schaller of the Kusa Seed Society, speaking about Humanity's Ancient Relationship with Edible Seed Crops, on Friday, January 30, at the Santa Barbara Public Library, Faulkner Gallery.

The precious edible seeds of the earth - the cereal grains, grain-legumes, oilseeds and other precious edible seeds - have a history of small-scale cultivation and utilization which dates back more than 10,000 years. Lorenz Schaller's work and the mission of the Kusa Seed Society is to increase humanity's knowledge and understanding of this very ancient relationship. Experience a colorful slide show of humanity's relationship with sacred cereal grasses such as barley, amaranth, kamut, spelt, millet, oats, quinoa, and other edible seed crops from around the world. Twenty years in the making the presentation is a pictorial tapestry woven from the threads of more than 400 international photo-images of spectacular beauty taken from remote agricultural villages and fields in places like the Himalayan mountains; rugged Ladakh; the Kingdom of Bhutan; the Tibetan plateau; rural Korea, Turkey, India, and many other lands. Lorenz founded Kusa Seed Society ( www.ancientcerealgrains.org) in 1980. Kusa is a Sanskrit word meaning sacred grass. Over time, his scientific knowledge merged with a deeper spiritual connection to the life cycles of the planet. He could see the bigger picture of how se ed crops supplied most of the world with important, densely nutritious foods. These miraculous plants feed more humans and wildlife than any other food source.

The event takes place at the Santa Barbara Public Library, Faulkner Gallery, 40 East Anapamu St, in downtown Santa Barbara, on Friday, January 30, 7-9pm, 2009. No reservations are required, donation $5. For more information please call (805) 962-2571, or email margie@sbpermaculture.org; http://www.sbpermaculture.org/upcoming.html

H. the Dalai Lama, and earned a doctorate in religious studies at Stanford. Alan brings deep experience and applied skills to the challenge of integrating Buddhist meditative practices with Western science to advance the study of the mind.

WINTERMEZZO 2008 - 2009
BLOODLINES AND BANDITS

GET ENGAGED WITH GREAT CHAMBER MUSIC IN A UNIQUE WAY

Engage with great chamber music throughout the year with Festival Mozaic’s WinterMezzo Series. This year, Bloodlines and Bandits brings you two unique programs showcasing both musical flattery and out-right thievery in some of the world’s greatest chamber music pieces.

Each musical program includes two events to choose from;
• An evening Notable Encounter, where wine country, culinary craftsmanship and the festival’s virtuoso musicians converge in a casual café-style musical tasting menu.
