Music by Mary Rogers, Lyrics by Marshall Barker, Directed and Choreographed by Shelagh Garren, Musical Direction by Linda Miner/"Many Moons ago, in a far-off place, dwelt a handsome Price with a gloomy face, for he did not have a bride." Little did he know that his beloved Princess would soon be swimming the moat and climbing the wall to meet him. Add a domineering Queen, a mute King and a slew of royal characters into the mix and you're in for a delightful journey which reveals the true story behind the classic fairy tale, The Princess and the Pea, and tickles your funny bone along the way. The perfect show for the entire family! Tickets: $15 general/$10 children under 13. Fri/Sat 7pm, Sat/Sun 2 pm. Please call 786-2440 or ONLINE at www.slolittletheatre.org. Thank you and Happy New Year!

H. the Dalai Lama, and earned a doctorate in religious studies at Stanford. Alan brings deep experience and applied skills to the challenge of integrating
Buddhist meditative practices with Western science to advance the study of the mind.

Morning Star Youth Ranch is working towards a similar ministry to that of Crystal Peaks with the vision to build bridges of hope, healing and restoration for local families through the interaction of working with horses rescued from neglect and abuse. Opening Event: Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at Jardin de las Granadas and Unveiling of the Summer Solstice Celebration Murals.
Date: 1st Thursday, February 5, 2009, 4:30pm, Free to the Public.
Location: 21 West Anapamu St. Jardin de las Granadas
Granada Paseo, between The Granada and the back of the Granada Garage, Santa Barbara, CA.
For those of you that have wondered what ever happened to the vibrantly colored and energetic Summer Solstice Celebration murals that were installed at 5 West Anapamu Street on the side of what was then The Earthling Bookstore, (later Copeland’s Sports) we have an answer. They’re back and better than ever!
During the month of December and early January, through the coordination of Santa Barbara County Arts Commission and the City Redevelopment Agency, original mural artists Benjamin Bottoms and Richard McLaughlin painstakingly restored and installed three of the original five panels on the back wall of the Granada Garage in the paseo behind The Granada.
The unveiling of the murals will take place as part of a ribbon-cutting ceremony lead by Mayor Blum---celebrating the City Redevelopment Agency’s completion of the Granada Garage, Casas de las Granadas and the recently completed Jardin de las Granadas on Thursday, February 5th at 4:30pm. This event is a great opportunity to meet the artists and learn more about the history of the murals as well as the restoration process. As part of the celebration, the Solar Flair, from the 2009 Summer Solstice parade, a giant inflatable created by Pali Ex-Mano will be on display. Pali’s artwork is truly unique and very colorful and since 1990 has been a huge creative force in the parade. Summer Solstice Celebration performers will be on hand to add to the festivities.
The murals were originally created as a temporary art installation in the heart of Santa Barbara’s Cultural Arts District in October 1995 with support from the County Arts Commission, the Downtown Organization, City Visual Art in Public Places Committee (VAPP) the Santa Barbara Cultural Development Foundation, and private donors. The popular murals included key architectural and topographical landmarks that frame detailed Summer Solstice parade imagery and participants. The Murals have been in storage since 1998, when they were removed by the new owners of the San Marcos Building.
The murals were painted on Sun-Tex, a soft screen-like fabric, covered with gesso, a white acrylic coating which when painted looks and feels much like canvas. The artists were able to complete the restoration in Santa Barbara in a space generously provided by Ian Brown of DBN Carrillo and help from Investec Management staff. The restoration process required cleaning plaster and debris from the back of the murals, conserving the paintings and resurfacing the front of the murals to include UV and graffiti surface coatings. Their new permanent site is less than a block from their original location.
Also part of the celebration at Jardin de las Granadas is the unveiling of four temporary public sculptures by Aris Demetrios---an exhibition made possible for the event by Sullivan Goss-An American Gallery. The idea of including foundations or pads for the display of temporary public art (to function much like the State of the Art Gallery along State Street) was the result of committee input in the planning stages of the Jardin.
About the Solstice Artists: Ben Bottoms was born and raised in Santa Barbara and is from one of the area’s most illustrious art families. He is an accomplished actor, designer, and painter. Richard McLaughlin is a graduate of UC Santa Barbara College of Creative Studies, and one of the founding members of Mime Caravan and Summer Solstice Celebration where he served as Artistic Director for several years. He is also an accomplished performer, artist and yoga instructor.

Come see Amy Obenski play live at Linnaea's Cafe, 1110 Garden Street, San Luis Obispo
"jazz-steeped compositions, which move from haunting to soothing in one intuitive swoop...” -Performer Magazine
With inspiration stemming from an array of genres including jazz, classical, rock and R&B, Obenski's music lends itself to an eclecticism that is surprisingly organic and natural. Her newest album, From The Deep*, (Released December 9th, 2008), features grand piano, cello, viola, bass, drums, mandolin and even accordion. And the instruments are perfectly balanced beneath her sweet and sultry vocals. The lyrics, always refreshingly honest and insightful, have been coined as "gripping" by critics.
In 2007 her song, "Carousel", was heard on the TV show Grey's Anatomy, taking the song to number twenty-three on the iTunes Folk Chart. Before that, her second album had been receiving play on MTV's program, MADE, which is still using her music today. Both successes have come to her by surprise. The first album, What We Tell, was discovered by an MTV executive who randomly heard her music on someone's iPod. A few years later, and on a whim, an editor placed the song from her second album onto Grey's Anatomy.
Being based out of Santa Cruz, California, Obenski tours mostly through the West Coast of the United States and plays steadily in the San Francisco Bay Area. She's performed in notable venues such as Biscuits and Blues in San Francisco, Don Quixote's in Santa Cruz, and has opened for the John Butler Trio in Los Angeles.

The HEARTS Obispo Valentines' celebration, now in its 3rd year, has quickly become the sweetest art/craft event in San Luis Obispo County. Small Valentine's gifts, unique cards, fine jewelry and fine art go on sale January 20th at ARTS Space Obispo in the SLO Creamery, Space #165. But it's the February 6th Art After Dark event for which ARTS Obispo goes all-out. Amazing sweet treats and local wines set a festive mood for bidding on larger items in the silent auction, and for the direct purchasing of smaller Valentine gifts.
This year HEARTS Obispo's free party only gets better. (No tickets required to attend the February 6th event.) In addition to the art (300 ways to say "I Love You"), other items up for auction to benefit ARTS Obispo's programs include tickets to local arts events and fine art Valentines signed by celebrities. There will be live music, local Central Coast wine pourings and a raffle for an array of fabulous prizes.
The Tipsy Gypsies, a jazz quartet consisting of Hilary Langdon on vocals, guitar players Toan Chau and Forrestt Williams, and double bassist Matt Reeder will provide reception music for HEARTS Obispo 3.
According to the musicians, what started as an informal jam session between the two Django-loving guitar players, Toan and Forrestt, who are both professional musicians, slowly evolved into a sound that falls somewhere between that of Billie Holiday and Django Reinhardt, but with a California edge.
The Tipsy Gypsies music has been described as easily accessible with an old-time sonic texture, spiced up with some edgy lyrics and modern influences, giving them a style that is both classic and unique.
In addition to the live music, refreshments will include desserts and wine poured by Mark Yeager of SharMar Cellars and Central Coast Wines of San Luis Obispo.
Come to HEARTS Obispo 3 and celebrate a love of creativity and find your loved one(s) a memorable gift that will be treasured for a lifetime.

The Music of Four Shillings Short -
Traveling musicians with a carload of instruments is nothing new in the world of folk music, but what if one of those instruments is a Sitar from India or a Renaissance Crumhorn? Going out on a musical limb is common for the group Four Shillings Short. With an ever-increasing array of instruments (over 20 at last count), including hammered dulcimer, mandola & mandolin, tinwhistle & woodwinds, sitar, banjo, percussion and vocals, their music is always varied and captivating.
In a single night, Four Shillings Short perform Traditional Irish tunes and airs, Indian Ragas, Folk Ballads, Old-Time songs, Medieval & Renaissance instrumentals and acappella numbers as well as contemporary folk and original compositions.
Their sound has been described as "wondrously diverse", "truly refreshing" and "alternative neo-Celtic folk of the first order".

“Elderquest” Workshop Offered
Aging has been described as ‘soul-making’ – a spiritual enterprise. A workshop called “The Elderquest: Deepening the Spiritual Journey,” will explore ways to discover new treasures during a stage of life that may be the most challenging of all.
Workshop leader, Berta Parrish, Ed.D., college educator and author of the book Wise Woman’s Way: A Guide to Growing Older with Purpose and Passion, has a background in Jungian and Archetypal Psychology. Berta creates a lively workshop using folklore, poetry, and film.
Through exploring the archetype of the elder, participants will find suggestions for ways to transform their knowledge into wisdom, their pain into perspective, and their purposes into passion and contentment.
The workshop is sponsored by the Hollister Institute and will be held on Saturday, February 7th, from 9:30 am to 12:30, at St. Benedict’s Episcopal Church in Los Osos, 2220 Snowy Egret Lane (across from the memorial park on Los Osos Valley Rd). A $10 donation is welcome but not necessary. For more information and to register call 528-0654.

In these challenging economic times businesses need all the help they can get. SLO Green Build Alliance is being formed to do just that. “JE T’AIME” AERIAL DANCE WITH A KISS…
“Does modern dance have a future? Has the evolution of the dance come to an end. Have primeval gyrations without sense or purpose become an expression of the dance in extremis.
You pessimists of little faith take heart. “ Je T’aime” has appeared on the scene.
It is an extraordinary projection of the dance in a new and vital form……
with performances that have power, beauty and elegance.
“Je T’aime” blends body and spirit, light and shadow in a presentation
where even the music becomes part of movement, a dancer itself among the others. This art is not spectacle, but a form of interactive communication with many facets. Each piece is refreshingly original and poignantly demanding of artist and audience alike. The juxtaposition of obstacle with hope, determination with sensitivity, drama with humor is reflective of Daughter of Zion Dance Company.
The structures form the artists’ spatial environment which is restricting and liberating, a refuge and a prison. This ever changing synergy between performers and structure is deeply evocative.
The poet counsels those who despair, there “will always be new world”.
For those who love the dance, the new world of “ Je t’aime” awaits.”

WHAT: 13th ANNUAL STUDIO SALE
WHEN: FEBRUARY 14 & 15, 2008, 10 am to 5 pm
WHERE: 1888 CHESTER LANE, CAMBRIA
Once a year Central Coast artists Lori Slater and Donald Archer open their Cambria studio to the public. Both artists are masters in their distinct styles.
Donald Archer will feature two recent series of paintings: ‘Manhattan,’ a cinematic-like exploration of the Big Apple with the artist wearing the hat of virtual ‘writer’, ‘director’, and ‘actor’; and ‘From the Window,’ a series of haiku-like glimpses of America’s heartland inspired by a cross-country trip on the train.
Lori Slater, known for her well composed and colorful still-lifes, is also offering a new series of imaginatively interpreted almond orchards.

"The Future of Food" directed by Deborah Koons, (2004), Color, 88 minutes. An in-depth investigation into the disturbing truth behind the unlabeled, patented, genetically engineered foods that have quietly filled US grocery store shelves for the past decade. Shot on location in the US, Canada and Mexico, "The Future of Food" reveals that there is a revolution going on in the farm fields and on the dinner tables of America, a revolution that is transforming the very nature of the food we eat. Inspired by Hungry Planet: The Food We Eat on display at the Art Center.

“Awakening by Calling to Mind the Qualities of the Three Jewels Sutra”
With Dharma Teacher Dawa Tarchin Phillips
at BodhiPath Center, 3484 Gregory Court, off Johnson Ave. in SLO
The Buddha (teacher), the Dharma (teachings) and the Sangha (community), the three jewels of refuge, are closely inter-related. We can rely on them in our aspiration for ultimate awakening. The Buddha, the accomplished and the awakened, is our inspiration. Understanding the qualities of these “three jewels” as presented in this sutra connects us to the base, path and fruition of the authentic process of awakening taught by the Buddha.
Buddhist Dharma Teacher Dawa Tarchin Phillips completed two 3-year meditation retreats as a student of the Mahamudra meditation master Gendun Rinpoche at Dhagpo Kundreul Ling Monastery in France where he received the transmission of the Karma Kagyu Lineage. Prior to focusing on meditative practices, Dawa pursued advanced studies in the arts, a career in the entertainment industry and worked with severely ill cancer and cardiac patients. Today, he teaches throughout Europe and the US , offering guidance to those on the spiritual path and is the resident teacher of Bodhi Path Center Santa Barbara.

The Hollister Institute Presents a Six Week Class:
Mystics, Martyrs, and Mothers
For more information: Caroline Hall 704-5826
Women have been relegated to subordinate roles throughout the history of Christianity. However, when we look again at the Christian Scriptures – and at early Christian history – we discover that Jesus had women disciples as well as men, and that women were co-workers with Peter, Paul, and other early church leaders.
The Christian women of the middle ages continued to serve their God and their faith communities in the footsteps of the women who went before them. There were some fascinating women in this era – Julian of Norwich, Catherine of Siena, Clare of Assisi, and Hildegard of Bingen.
Mystics, Martyrs and Mothers is for women and men who want to learn more about these saints and many others. We will also be reading Mary Malone’s book, “Women and Christianity: From 1000 to the Reformation.” These discussions will be led by the Rev. Donna Ross and take place at St Benedict’s, Los Osos on Thursday mornings in January and February beginning January 15 at 10 a.m.
To register and order a copy of the book, email Donna Ross at donnaross@charter.net or call 235-5117.
The Hollister Institute provides a variety of classes and workshops for those interested in spirituality and the interface between religion and society. St Benedict’s Episcopal Church is located at 2220 Snowy Egret lane, at the corner of Los Osos Valley and Clark Valley Roads. www.stbenslososos.org, 528-0654.

Environmental Justice Advocate Robert Bullard to Speak at UCSB
During Black History Month
Dr. Robert D. Bullard, often called the father of the environmental justice movement, will speak on “Environmental Justice for All” at UCSB’s MultiCultural Center Theater on Thursday, February 19, 2009, at 4:00 p.m. His talk will be the seventh annual Shirley Kennedy Memorial Lecture, sponsored by UCSB’s Center for Black Studies Research. The lecture — held in February as part of Black History Month — will be free to the public.
Dr. Bullard’s scholarship has distinguished him as a leading expert on environmental justice and race and the environment. He has been featured on CNN’s “People You Should Know” and on public radio’s “Democracy Now!” In 2008, Newsweek magazine named Dr. Bullard one of “the most influential environmental leaders of the last century.”
Dr. Bullard is the Ware Distinguished Professor of Sociology and Director of the Environmental Justice Resource Center at Clark Atlanta University. His research addresses the subjects of environmental justice, environmental racism, urban land use, facility permitting, community reinvestment, housing, transportation, suburban sprawl, and smart growth.
Dr. Shirley Kennedy was a dynamic professor at UCSB and served as the Community Outreach Coordinator for the Center for Black Studies. Among her many gifts to the community was an educational exhibit about the slave ship Henrietta Marie. This lecture series was established after Dr. Kennedy’s death in 2003.
The UCSB Center for Black Studies Research was founded in 1969. Operating under the auspices of the Office of Research, the Center provides a forum for the study of people of African descent, conducts research, and hosts colloquia, visiting scholars, and conferences to enrich the conversation about racial issues.

MY NAME IS LYSISTRATA!
The Arroyo Grande High School Theatre Ensemble will present MY NAME IS LYSISTRATA!, a new play written and directed by theatre teacher Billy Houck based on Aristophanes' classic antiwar comedy Lysistrata February 19, 20 & 21 at 7:30 and February 22 at 2:00 in the Clark Center Studio Theatre. Tickets for all performances are available through the Clark Center Box Office at (805) 489-9444.
Originally written by Aristophanes in 410 BC, Lysistrata tells the story of a group of Greek women who, frustrated with what seems to be a war without end, are inspired by a woman named Lysistrata to form an alliance with the women from the country their husbands are fighting. All the women take a universal oath to have nothing to do with their husbands and boyfriends until a lasting peace is declared. To make sure the men take them seriously, the women barricade themselves in the Acropolis, taking control of the government’s finances until the men come to the peace table. Hilarity ensues.
MY NAME IS LYSISTRATA! takes Aristophanes’ play, updates the language and moves the action to an unnamed but familiar-seeming modern country. The basic plot remains the same. The combined effect of the battle of the sexes and a passionate grassroots peace movement makes this ancient play read like tomorrow’s news.
MY NAME IS LYSISTRATA! will be presented in the Clark Center Studio Theatre, an intimate “black box” performance space. The Clark Center Theatre is located at the corner of Valley Road and Fair Oaks Avenue in Arroyo Grande. From the north, take the Fair Oaks exit off of 101 and turn right. From the South, take the Traffic Way exit off of 101, then turn left on Fair Oaks over the freeway to Valley.
MY NAME IS LYSISTRATA! will be performed four times only, February 19, 20 & 21 at 7:30 and February 22 at 2:00. All seats are $8.00 in advance and $10 at the door. Patrons are encouraged to get their tickets early, as seating is very limited.

Go big or go home. That's Matt Dusk's mantra as he tours his second album "Back In Town" with a show full of swing and jazz designed to get the feet tapping. Like such hot young crooners as Michael Bublé and Jamie Cullum, Matt Dusk swings it hot and cool, with a voice made for the ages and a style that is pure sophistication. Matt Dusk has made his mark with two well-received major label CDs, 2004's Two Shots and 2007's Back in Town. He has been described as having enough charisma and style to land him an honorary spot in The Rat Pack. Enjoy an evening of smooth vocals with this hot rising star. Underground Bay Area rapper Andre Nickatina (myspace.com/certifiedandrenickatina) brings his live show to Downtown Brewing Co. on Thursday February 19th. Nickatina surprisingly still puts out independent releases even after his song “A-Yo” became one of the most ubiquitous club jams around the mid ‘00’s. Around that time, SF Weekly proclaimed him the best local hip-hop legend in 2005 citing his “constant cadre of great hooks and a rugged street reportage style that's alternately enthralling and scary.” Nickatina just released “A Tale of 2 Andres” in 2008. The release is largely comprised of work Nickatina did with other NorCal hero Mac Dre in 2006, but features updated production from Bay Area greats. Nickatina’s released 19 albums since 1993, cementing himself as one of the most prolific and long-standing members of the Bay scene. His show starts up at 8PM. It’s 18+, $25, and sure to be one of the most highly attended shows this year.

Friday night, February 20, 6:30 PM
Hoovers 101 -
6900 El Camino Real, Atascadero.
805-466-6900.
Our Mingle in Grover Beach was a smash! We had 58 singles show up, and I expect to have at least that many again in one of our favorite venues for Singles Mixers here on the Central Coast. There is no cost at all for this except the food/drink you order & tip, or you can just sit and drink water for free.
I have reserved the private room for us at no charge. Take the Hwy 41 exit, turn North on El Camino Real 1/2 block and you are there. Easy off, easy on.
We will sit at 6:30 and they close the room at 9, but we will likely be there til about 9:30. We will have time to chat and get to meet each other, walk around and introduce ourselves to all the other singles. This place is also a brewery with a full bar available. The music upstairs starts about 9 PM.
Upstairs is a popular hotspot for dancing, so we can head upstairs for the night owls to have some fun dancing after our meeting. Cover charge is only $3 if you want to go up there.
The groups performing are the Fainting Goats from Santa Cruz and The JD Project from SLO.
There is a full bar, seating, and we can see if they will let us use the pool tables.
If you don't want to dance or be around loud music, there is bowling or movies in Paso Robles if a few people want to run up there. The theater has stadium seating with recliners, and THX sound.
We had 40 singles at our first Atascadero mingle, and I expect well over 40 at this one. In fact, I'm hoping to get enough to take over the restaurant Seating is limited to 35 in the room, so I recommend getting there early. Extra will have to sit out in the main room to eat right outside the door to our room, and just join us for the mingle part. If you are late, still come join in.

A sneak preview of Paul Gray’s film, “Everyman,” will be held on Friday, February 20 at 7pm at the San Luis Obispo Arts Center. The Center is located at 1010 Broad Street at Monterey on the west end of the Mission Plaza.
The film was produced with a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Its running time is 1 hour and 54 minutes.
The film, “Everyman,” is a post-apocalyptic version of the medieval play of the same name, and is reminiscent of George Orwell’s “1984” and Francois Truffaut’s “Farenheit 451.” Set in the not-too-distant future, the story pits Everyman against an oppressive elitist society empowered by a demonic computerized surveillance system. This contemporary version of “Everyman” also includes expressionistic sequences of the Seven Deadly Sins.
The event is free and open to the public (16 and older recommended).
Following the screening, the audience will have a chance to meet the filmmaker and will be invited to fill out reaction cards. Refreshments will be served.
Paul Gray, who has been described as an experimental auteur filmmaker, produced, wrote, directed and edited “Everyman.” Previous films that he has screened in the area include “Starfish,” and “The Ballad of Dorothy Dunn.”

Does the current economy have you down? Do what the Brazilians do, abandon all worries, open your heart to music, dance and creativity, celebrate Carnaval, and make sure you bring your Samba shoes!
Santa Barbara Permaculture Network & Soul Brasil magazine collaborate for the second year with a film event on Friday, February 20, featuring The Miracle of Candeal with Grammy-award winning percussionist Carlinhos Brown. The film event kicks-off the 6th Annual Santa Barbara Brazilian Carnaval, with 3 days of dance, film, food, capoeira, and soccer (www.soulbrasil.com).
The Miracle of Candeal is an award winning film by Fernando Trueba about musician Carlinhos Brown and Candeal, a marginal area in the heart of Salvador, the capital of the Brazilian state of Bahia. Brown returns home to the favela (slum) of Candeal, notorious for its crime, heavy drug trafficking, and street kids, to help transform his community through the power of music. A celebration of music and social change unfolds.
The film begins with formerly exiled Cuban music godfather Bebo Valdés, whose quest to find his African roots leads him to Candeal, and ultimately makes him witness to Brown’s outstanding achievements. This exploration of Afro-Brazilian music includes appearances by musicians Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, and Marisa Monte among others. It is a journey through Brazilian music and festivals from the ancestral to the sophisticated present.
The film will be preceded by a short film on the Brazilian organization, OPA (Organization of Permaculture & Art) located in the historic district of Pelourinho near the community of Candeal. OPA has programs of street theater, art and permaculture for underprivileged children and at-risk youth. Santa Barbara Permaculture Network will talk briefly about Permaculture sites visited while in Brazil.

"Wisdom and Discipline" A Dialogue with Ms. Dantes
In general, discipline is associated with parental scolding or monastic practices.
However, there are many other meanings to this word. Let us examine wisdom, and how an awakened mind is naturally a disciplined mind.
- Ms. Dantes
Ms. Dantes is author of the books: The Unmanifest Self: Transcending the Limits of Ordinary Consciousness and Your Fantasies May Be Hazardous to Your Health: How Your Thoughts Create Your World.
We begin with a 30-minute silent meditation, followed by the dialogue that lasts about one hour. Dialogue will be followed by tea and refreshments. There is no charge. Donations gratefully accepted.

Los Angeles seems to suffer urban problems worse than other American metropolises, but there’s no shortage of people who would live nowhere else. Maybe that’s the reason why one writer has no trouble finding residents he’d describe as nuts.
Joe Dungan, author of the columns that comprise L.A. Nuts, started out with mere email exchanges to a friend about Clyde Langtry, an exceptionally obtuse and delusional neighbor. This evolved into a blog, then a column that ran online for two years. The best of these columns have been reedited into a collection that has already been called unapologetic, hilarious, requisite reading, and a new American classic.
It certainly is a look at Los Angeles that has never been seen before, if for no other reason than the route Dungan has taken to write these. It’s centered around his life, travels, and experiences, but his is all at once uniquely his yet uniquely Los Angeles: show business, traffic, high cost of living, inane landmarks. And insane people. No apparent shortage of them.
There are plenty of other tomes that document far more history than L.A. Nuts does, but Dungan’s leg work is a perfect complement to his dry sense of humor. (On trying to break into screenwriting: “You need to get better so you can sell a script or get hired to rewrite someone else’s script. Sure, chances are it’ll get made into a bad movie, but that’s not the writer’s job. A chore that important is usually reserved for studio executives.”)
Although he’s lived in Los Angeles his entire life, he writes like a visitor stuck here. As such, it’s no coincidence that he favors irony.

Who: The Earl Brothers - Original Mountain Bluegrass Music
What: Red Barn Community Music Series (NEW VENUE!)
Where: St Benedict's Church, 2220 Snowy Egret Lane, Los Osos, CA 93402
When: February 21 at 7 PM (6 PM potluck)
Cost: $10 donation at the door
Web: http://myspace.com/redbarnseries/
The Red Barn Community Music Series presents The Earl Brothers on Saturday, February 21 at St Benedict's Church in Los Osos. This lively show will be the second concert at our new venue that features brilliant acoustics, antique ambience, and heat(!).
The Earl Brothers, based out of San Francisco, CA, perform original hillbilly mountain music. For those who remember the first time they heard the high lonesome sound of Bill Monroe or the otherworldly harmonies of the Stanley Brothers, that same thrill of discovery is recreated by the Earl Brothers. Listeners are left with a mix of exhilaration and bewilderment upon their first exposure to this new-yet-old form of music.
Unlike other traditional bluegrass bands that perform the music of the original bluegrass masters, the Earl Brothers are blazing their own trail. They extend the genre while staying within the gritty tradition that started in the southern states back in the 1940s and 50s.
St Benedict's Church is located at 2220 Snowy Egret Lane in Los Osos, off Clark Valley Rd at the corner of Clark Valley and Los Osos Valley Rd. The church can easily be seen from Los Osos Valley Rd, opposite the Los Osos Cemetery and Memorial Gardens. The show begins at 7:00 PM, with pot luck supper and pot luck band beginning at 6:00 PM. Admission is $10 at the door. For more information call 528-4530. They will also appear the night before, Friday Feb. 20th at Monteleones Rock, 1331-A Vendels Circle in Paso Robles. The Cal Poly jazz ensembles will present a young, fresh approach to one of America's great art forms – jazz – in Harman Hall at the Performing Arts Center at Cal Poly.
Two big bands and two combos will demonstrate how jazz is being reinvigorated by the next generation, according to Paul Rinzler, director of jazz studies at Cal Poly. With four trumpets, four trombones, five saxophones, and a rhythm section, the big bands produce a "wall of sound" that is typical of big bands.
The University Jazz Band #1 will perform the hip-hop big band composition "Grass is Greener," the jazz classic "Cherokee," as recorded by jazz vocalist Sarah Vaughan, and the modern, rhythmically complex composition "Guten Tag, Zigaretten?"
The University Jazz Band #2 will feature two jazz standards as recorded by Frank Sinatra, "I Get a Kick Out of You" and "Only Have Eyes for You."
Tickets for the concert are $12 and $15 for the public, $10 and $13 for senior citizens and Jazz Federation members, and $6 and $10 for students. They are on sale at the Performing Arts Ticket Office from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. To order by phone, call SLO- ARTS (756-2787).
Patrons who buy season tickets to four Music Department events through the Performing Arts Ticket office will receive a 10 percent discount; a 15 percent discount is given to those who buy tickets to five or more events.
The concert is sponsored by Cal Poly's Music Department, College of Liberal Arts and Instructionally Related Activities program. For more information, call the Music Department at 756-2406.

"Passion Tones”: The Photography and Illustrations of Sharon Robinson" on Display in the Lompoc Museum's Centeno Gallery.
The Lompoc Museum is teaming up with Club Arcturus in celebration of Black History Month with a special exhibit in the Lompoc Museum's Centeno Gallery. This year's featured artist is Sharon Robinson. Her exhibit, “Passion Tones”, is a compilation of photographs and illustrations that according to the artist depict “luminaries from the arts, social activism and just plain folks”. She hopes the exhibit will encourage youth to art and history as a means of understanding and celebrating human achievement.
About the Artist: After six years of service in the U.S. Navy as a Naval Photographer’s Mate, the artist set about building a freelance photography career. The theft of her camera equipment in 1994 almost ended her budding photography career, but not her love for image making. Just a year later, Sharon entered college and earned two degrees in Communications while teaching herself the art and craft of illustration.
Club Arcturus has its roots as an African-American civic and social club during the socially turbulent 1960s. It enjoys a rich legacy within the Lompoc community and has teamed up with the Lompoc Museum in recent years to celebrate Black History Month through exhibits featuring African-American themes and/or artists.
The Centeno Gallery is located within the Lompoc Museum at 200 South H Street in downtown Lompoc.
Reception: The public is invited to meet the artist and members of Club Arcturus on Sunday, February 1 from 2 – 4 p.m.
The Lompoc Museum is open to the public Tuesday - Friday: 1-5 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday 1 - 4 p.m. The Museum is closed Mondays and major holidays.

“Awakening by Calling to Mind the Qualities of the Three Jewels Sutra” With Dharma Teacher Dawa Tarchin Phillips

YMCA Bitty Basketball Begins In January

Bitty Basketball with the YMCA, for children ages 3 through 5, will begin January 27th and run through February 27th at the San Luis Obispo County YMCA in San Luis Obispo. Bitty Basketball is one in a series of Bitty Sports offered by the YMCA. The YMCA’s Bitty Sport program is designed to assist parents in developing their child’s interests in sport, and to strengthen the relationship between children and their parents.
The program helps children to build and develop a set of skills that they will carry with them into adolescence. Throughout the Bitty Basketball program, parents have the opportunity to teach and assist their child. The immediate gain is spending quality time together, but long term gains are even more significant. Not only will do children build a solid foundation for the sport, but the parent-child relationship is strengthened.
Bitty Basketball program days are Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. at the San Luis Obispo County YMCA Fitness Facility in San Luis Obispo, at 1020 Southwood off of Laurel Lane. The YMCA will provide balls, baskets, and a program T-Shirt. Registration can be done by mail, fax, or in person at the Y. The cost is $65 per child before January 20th, and $70 thereafter. Everyone is welcome at the YMCA and no one is turned away due to an inability to pay. Financial assistance is available to families who qualify.
Other Bitty Sports programs offered throughout the year include T-Ball and Soccer. Please visit the YMCA website at: www.sloymca.org, or for more information contact Gilbert Almendarez, galmendarez@sloymca.org at the YMCA at 543-8235 ext. 116.

It is said that if you do not know your past then you can not know your future; well *Groundation* knows its past, and they're stepping into the future. *Groundation* is bringing classic Roots music into the serious times of the 21st century. And what music is more pertinent than that of the musical prophet Robert Nesta “Bob” Marley (February 6, 1945 – May 11, 1981) 2009 will be the ninth consecutive year that *Groundation* has taken time from their formidable international touring schedule to pay homage to the man who changed the world with his message and his music. Drawing from the depths of Bob Marley & The Wailers expansive catalogue,*Groundation* takes Marley’s songs and infuses them with their incomparable blend of high energy jazz-based improvisation, creating wholly unique versions of timeless classics.
Joining *Groundation* on this tour will be legends Will Bernard (Dr. Lonnie Smith, Stanton Moore Trio, 2008 Grammy nominee for Best Jazz Album /Party Hats/) and Leroy “Horsemouth” Wallace (The Wailers, Burning Spear, star of cult film/Rockers/). Bernard is the most ubiquitous guitarist in the modern jazz/jam world’s star-studded field, having toured with everyone from Medeski Martin & Wood to The Coup. Wallace is Reggae music’s most prolific drummer, serving as the foundation of the creation of the one-drop rhythm which was the backbone of Marley’s sound. Bernard and Wallace also appeared on *Groundation*’s recent side-release Rockamovya (released in June 2008), which has been met with acclaim the world over. All told, with eleven accomplished artists on stage, and *Groundation*’s commitment to preserving and furthering the intrinsic elements of Marley’s music, there is simply no better chance to see Marley’s music in today’s world.
*Groundation* pulls off the rarest of feats in today’s corporate-consumer world: A progressively-minded and sounding music group, wholly self-sustaining and perpetuating.Serious times calls for serious music and *Groundation*, on numerous fronts, delivers. Combining Reggae’s hunger for equality and social justice with Jazz music’s core of incessantly fresh improvisation, *Groundation* is quickly becoming the band to watch early in the 21^st Century. As this globalized world continues to get smaller, it is essential for all communities and cultures to have ample and equal representation.
*Groundation* is the biggest, most respected American Reggae band in the world today; come find out why.

French Hospital Medical Center (FHMC) welcomes the San Luis Obispo County community to the Grand Opening of the hospital’s new Fitness Zone on February 25, 2009 at 10 a.m. The grand opening will feature equipment demonstrations, sample workouts and a special guest appearance by Cal Poly’s new Head Football Coach, Tim Walsh.

It is open from sunrise to sunset for all community members, hospital visitors and FHMC staff to enjoy, completely free of charge. The Fitness Zone features 11 exercise stations suitable for all fitness levels. The exercise equipment targets leg strength, cardiovascular fitness, core stability, upper body strength and balance. The Fitness Zone also provides a starting point for a one mile walking trail around the hospital. The project was funded by employee donations to the 2008 Employee Caring Circle and a generous grant from TriActive America.
The Fitness Zone is one step in FHMC’s efforts to promote a healthy, balanced lifestyle among our family of employees and the community. In December of 2008, FHMC became the first tobacco-free hospital in San Luis Obispo County. FHMC has also instituted an Employee Wellness Committee to promote an environment of health and wellbeing to our employees, medical staff and volunteers.
The Fitness Zone is created by TriActive America, the nation’s leader for outdoor fitness equipment. TriActive America’s eco-friendly outdoor fitness products are designed for a range of environments and are installed in parks, schools, hospitals, corporations, resorts, hotels, military bases, organizations such as YMCAs, residential communities, around community lakes, and along fitness trails. It has instituted fitness areas similar to FHMC’s Fitness Zone throughout the United States. About the Book and Author -
These tales have been gleaned from the author’s collection of more than twenty diaries, and they give the reader a look into the psyche of a highly sensitive person. Kalila moves bumpily form awkward adolescence into hippie hood, and then plunges into politics, marriage and motherhood. She shares her private journal entries and middle-age insights to inspire others to keep notebooks for 1) fascinating historical records, 2) inexpensive psychotherapy, 3) the preservation of family secrets, successes and sillinesses, and 4) great reading material when you’re older and wiser.
Diaries can be powerful tools for personal growth, and Kalila proves that soulful writing can give one access to the unconscious and the divine. After reading this memoir, you might wish to follow her example and dig into the whisperings of your heart and mind by being a journal keeper.

The San Luis Obispo Symphony will present the 21st Annual Symphony Ball, Auction and Honors on Saturday, February 28, 2009 at the Embassy Suites Hotel in San Luis Obispo. An elegant, entertaining and popular event, the annual Ball and Auction is also a critical fundraiser for the Symphony, raising more than $50,000 each year in support of the Symphony’s extensive artistic and music education programs reaching more than 16,000 children and adults every year.
This year’s Ball has been christened La Belle Epoque which means “the beautiful era”?a golden age between the late 1890s and the First World War when peace, innovation, and the arts flourished in Europe. Guests to the Ball will travel back in time to Paris, France for a “belle soiree” of dining and dancing; and are encouraged to bid on auction items that will feature Central Coast wines, gala parties, exciting getaways, fine jewelry and more, in a setting decorated with golden tapestries and glittering lights. Musical group Café Musique will entertain guests throughout the early part of the evening, then from 10 pm till midnight, the Central Coast DJ will be on hand while partiers dance the night away. The evening will also boast the Second Annual Symphony Honors celebration honoring long-time Symphony supporter, co-concertmaster, Music Education advocate and local dentist, Pam Dassenko.
Reservations for the Symphony Ball are $120 per person. “Tribute Ads” honoring Ms. Dassenko may also be purchased by her friends and fans to express sentiments of love and support. The ads will be printed in the program booklet for the evening and presented to our honored guest as a gift. Tribute ads start at $150 for a quarter page ad. For more information on all of the great auction items or to make your reservations, please call the Symphony office at (805) 543-3533 or visit the Symphony website at www.slosymphony.com.

Felix Mendelssohn, Franz Joseph Haydn and George Frederick Handel – three of history’s greatest composers – are being celebrated in concerts this year by musical organizations throughout the world, including Cal Poly.
The Cal Poly Choirs, conducted by Music Professor Thomas Davies, will perform at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 28, in Harman Hall of the Performing Arts Center's Christopher Cohan Center. The choir will present important works by the three composers.
In addition, the Cal Poly Choirs will perform the world premiere of a work by Cal Poly Professor Craig Russell. Russell’s work, titled "Wings of Bliss," is based on a poem by Los Osos resident Mark Lloyd Richardson.
The 44-member PolyPhonics will play Mendelssohn’s “Sechs Sprüche ("Six Anthems"), Op. 79, and Handel’s chorus “Dixit Dominus.”
The 75 members of the University Singers will perform Mendlessohn’s “Die Nachtigall” (“The Nightengale”), Handel’s popular “Let Their Celestial Concerts Unite” (from the Oratorio “Samson”), and Haydn’s Madrigal Chorus, “Der Sturm” (“The Storm”).
Other composers represented in this celebration include Claude Debussy, Gioacchino Rossini and Trond Kverno. Nordic folksongs and African American spirituals will also be performed.
Student conductors Kelly Eshoff, Morgan Hurd and Rory Fratkin will assist Davies.
The Cal Poly Choirs are accompanied by Paul Woodring and Susan Azaret Davies.

2008 Academy of Country Music Top New Male Vocalist of the year, Jack Ingram, started writing songs and performing while he was studying psychology at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. Lucky for us, Ingram chose a career in music and discovered an altogether different kind of therapy. He weaves his questions about life into songs whose depth and incisive wit are matched with their melodic resonance and insistent hooks. Rather than charging a hundred bucks an hour to listen to our problems, Ingram took to the stage and channeled his emotional searching, his quest to find a place in the world, into one of music’s most explosive live shows. Jack Ingram is currently hitting the top of the country music charts with singles such as “Wherever You Are,” “Love You,” “Measure of a Man” and “Maybe She’ll Get Lonely.” Tickets are available by calling 805-489-9444 or visiting www.clarkcenter.org.
