     Leadership in the Arts Award
    Contact: Linda Gardy   568-3990   gardy@co.santa-barbara.ca.us
Superintendent Bill Cirone and Tina Fanucchi share the 2009 Leadership in the Arts Award from the Santa Barbara County Arts Commission. For further information contact: Ginny Brush, 805.568-3992 or gbrush@co.santa-barbara.ca.us or Linda Gardy at 805.568-3990 or gardy@co.santa-barbara.ca.us. The Santa Barbara County Arts Commission’s announcement of this year’s Leadership in the Arts Award will take place at a festive celebration and holiday gathering in the Channing Peake Gallery during 1st Thursday in Downtown Santa Barbara on December 3rd. Chair Barbara Burger will present the award on behalf of the Arts Commission to long-time arts education advocates Bill Cirone, County Superintendent of Schools and Tina Fanucchi, past Director of the Public Education Foundation. Recognizing recent trends in decreasing resources and access to arts education in our public schools, the Arts Commission wanted to highlight the valuable role that Arts Education plays in the lives of students enhancing both personal and academic success; and recognize two individuals that have done so much to advocate and engage the community in efforts to support and sustain arts in our public schools. Second District Supervisor Janet Wolf who will be presenting both recipients with a Proclamation from the Santa Barbara County the Board of Supervisors at the December 1st meeting in Santa Barbara praised Cirone stating “I’ve known Bill for over 15 years and he is truly one of the most ardent advocates for arts education in our schools. He is most deserving of this honor.” When notified of the recognition, Ms. Fanucchi had this to say about the Art Commission’s award, “Although this is designed to be an individual award, I want to acknowledge the consistent support of those in our community who recognize that music education in our schools is vital to the success of our students. The vision of the Santa Barbara Education Foundation, donors, students, teachers and fiercely dedicated volunteers all share in the success of Keep the Beat can feel honored to know that their commitment is recognized and valued. I hope the inspiration of this award, and the spirit in which it is given, encourages the continued support of arts education.” Superintendent Cirone has been an articulate spokesperson for the value of the arts in education at the county level and at the state level where he has served as Chair of the California Arts Task Force. “I have long been a passionate believer in the value of the arts as an essential element of a well-rounded education; the benefits to young people are immeasurable in so many critical areas, commented Superintendent of Schools Cirone. “The Santa Barbara County Arts Commission serves such a vital role in helping preserve and promote the arts, and to be honored by the commission, which I respect and admire so highly, is meaningful and humbling beyond words.” Ginny Brush, Executive Director of the Arts Commission points out that “Over the years, the Leadership in Arts award has given the Arts Commission an opportunity to shine a light on great achievements realized by exemplary citizens who through their vision, commitment, and dedication continue to sustain our regional culture and increase access to arts for the residents of Santa Barbara County.” The Leadership in the Arts Award was established in 2006 as an annual award to honor and recognize individuals or organizations that have made a significant impact on the arts and culture of our region through innovative thinking and exemplary commitment to promoting, sustaining, and advancing our quality of life through the Arts. Second District Supervisor Susan Rose was the first recipient of the award. Since then the annual award has gone to Santa Maria artist, arts educator and long-time arts advocate Nat Fast in 2007 and to Joe and Margie Talaugon, long-time Guadalupe residents for their commitment, community involvement and support for art and cultural activities through their development of the Guadalupe Cultural Arts & Education Center that opened its doors in 2002. The Arts Commission established in 1977 is a 15-member panel with three representatives appointed by each of the five County District Supervisors.

Gunter Pauli suggests by emulating Nature we can evolve from an economy based on scarcity to an economy based on abundance---the cascading, nutrient rich, Blue Economy. Gunter Pauli, famous eco-entrepreneur and passionate proponent of green development worldwide, will discuss the potential for green jobs to revitalize and reinvigorate our economy with creative systems thinking in a public talk on December 5, hosted by the Santa Barbara City College Center for Sustainability. Author of the soon to be released book "The Blue Economy, 10 Years; 100 Innovations; 100,000,000 Jobs", Pauli shares four years of research and case studies identifying 100 innovations that have the potential to generate as many as 100 million jobs worldwide in the next 10 years. The former president of the hugely successful biodegradable soap company Ecover, Pauli was responsible for Europe's first ecological factory located in Belgium, that subsequently turned into a "green" tourist attraction. He founded "Zero Emissions Research and Initiatives" (ZERI) at the United Nations University in Tokyo, and established the Global ZERI Network, redesigning production and consumption into clusters of industries inspired by natural systems. Leapfrogging past stagnant models of business that no longer work, Pauli is known for innovative strategies for the first and third worlds, involving the genius of both street kids and savvy business icons alike. Noting that whole systems thinking is a learned process best learned early, Pauli has written children's books in many languages and helped create curriculums for schools.     “Day-To-Day Buddhism” With Dharma Teacher Khedrup Zangmo - This meditation practice and teaching will focus on bringing our practice into our lives and world. Buddhism offers many methods to relieve suffering in our own lives and in the lives of others. Nobody wants to suffer and everyone wants to be happy. Learning to meditate with trained guidance can ease our suffering and truly transform our lives. Learning to take these experiences out in the world truly transforms us and the world we live in. We will discuss taking our sitting and other practices into our daily lives and finding the space in our busy lives for practice. Khedrub Zangmo has been studying and practicing Buddhism for over 25 years. Under the guidance of the highly respected meditation master Lama Gendun Rinpoche, she took monastic vows and completed two consecutive three-year retreats at Dhagpo Kundreul Ling in central France . After completing her second retreat in 1997, Khedrub lived in the women’s monastery established by Gendun Rinpoche and began teaching Buddhism in centers, schools and organizations in Europe and in the USA . At the request of Shamar Rinpoche, Khedrub moved back to the US in 2000. Khedrub is currently a resident teacher of the Pasadena Bodhi Path Center.

   7:30 PM  -  10:00 PM FOOTLOOSE
    Contact: BILLY HOUCK   805 710-6418   billyhouck@yahoo.com
The Arroyo Grande High School Theatre Ensemble will present FOOTLOOSE, a dance-packed musical based on the poplar 1984 film that made Kevin Bacon a star, December 11 & 12 at 7:30 pm in the Clark Center Theatre. Tickets are available through the Clark Center Box Office at (805) 489-9444. One of the most explosive movie musicals in recent memory bursts onto the live stage with exhilarating results. When Ren and his mother move from Chicago to a small farming town, Ren is prepared for the inevitable adjustment period at his new high school. What he isn't prepared for are the rigorous local edicts, including a ban on dancing instituted by the local preacher, determined to exercise the control over the town's youth that he cannot command in his own home. When the reverend's rebellious daughter sets her sights on Ren, her roughneck boyfriend tries to sabotage Ren's reputation, with many of the locals eager to believe the worst about the new kid. The heartfelt story that emerges is of a father longing for the son he lost and of a young man aching for the father who walked out on him. The stage adaptation of FOOTLOOSE was created by Dean Pitchford based on his original 1984 screenplay, with music by Tommy Snow, Eric Carmen, Sammy Hagar, Kenny Loggins and Jim Steinman. The score for this show was nominated for both Oscar and Tony Awards. The soundtrack album reached number one on the Billboard charts and has sold over 15 million copies. FOOTLOOSE celebrates the wisdom of listening to young people, as well as guiding them with a warm heart and an open mind. FOOTLOOSE will be presented for the public two times only, Friday, December 11, and Saturday, December 12. All shows begin promptly at 7:30 pm. All seats are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Patrons are encouraged to get their tickets early, as seating is limited. Call the Clark Center Box Office at (805) 489-9444 for information and reservations.

Santa Barbara Revels joyfuly presents "The Christmas Revels: in Celebration of the Winter Solstice." This entertaining and exuberant theatrical production is Santa Barbara's newest seasonal tradition and links our community to nine other national Revels companies from Cambridge, MA to Seattle, WA. This year's show is filled with holiday magic and features glorious choral and instrumental music, as well as the lively dances, engaging drama and colorful rituals of the English medieval period. Our more than 60 performers include the Solstice Singers, the Yuletide Children's Chorus, the Pacific Sword Company, the Revels Morris Men, the Coastal Brass Ensemble and the James Michael Consort. This year, we feature the engaging tale of "The King and the Fool", briefly described thusly: On the shortest day of the year, the King of the realm must battle the Dark Knight to retain his throne for another year. In a contest of wits, words and weapons, help comes from a surprising source, as the Fool enters the fray and saves the day. Starring Ken Ryals as the King and Ed Lee as the Fool, this story holds suprises and scares alike, while still providing "Family suitable revelry" that is "best experienced as an 'experience,' live and onstage--and spilling into the audience." (Santa Barbara News Press). Audience participation is a hallmark of Revels, and revels-goers will be invited to sing and dance along. The Santa Barbara Independent summed up our show best: "Revels bypasses the commercial and heads straight to the heart of the season." "The Christmas Revels" will appear December 11th, 12th and 13th at the Marjorie Luke Theatre, 721 E. Cota Street in Santa Barbara. Tickets are available through the Lobero Theatre Box Office, 31 E. Canon Perdido or www.lobero.com or (805) 963-0761. Family-friendly pricing begins at $12 for children and $25 for adults. Discounts are available for groups by calling (805) 565-9357.     From now until December 31 individual donations to the North County's Women's Shelter will be twice as powerful thanks to a generous offer from Lance and Nina Holt. The couple has offered to match donations to the North County's Shelter Program up to $10,000. "Any funds sent to us will now do twice the work, provide twice the services, buy twice as much food and more," said Eileen Allan, executive director. The North County Women's Shelter maintains two 24-hour shelters in the north county for women and their children who are victims of domestic violence. Shelter services include counseling, case management, food, medical care, clothing, transportation, assistance with restraining orders and more at no cost to the families. The Shelter Program is partially funded by county, state, and federal grants. Each grantor requires a show of local support as requirement of receiving funds. Fundraising efforts not only help provide direct services, but also meet this requirement. "Those donations of money are leveraged to ensure that we get the financial aid needed to provide two safe houses and the related services such as assistance with temporary restraining orders, individual and group counseling, on-campus school counseling, food, toiletries and more," Allan said. "The community has been extremely supportive of our cause during my 17 years with the agency," Allan said, adding, "It is heart warming to know that this community is also very concerned with the incidents of domestic violence and its impact on not only the adult victims, but the innocent children too. Sixty percent of our shelter residents are children." The agency's current board of directors are; Robert Burton, Captain Paso Robles Police Department, Jennifer Hayner, Attorney at Law, Diane Mandala, Real Estate Broker Associate, San Marquis, Retired Financial Executive, Robin Weckerly, Commander Sheriff's Department, Brandon Yakush, Forensic Psychologist and Carol Kiessig, Retired Business Owner.

SLO NOONTIME TOASTMASTERS. Most people would rather die than give a speech, according to a survey reported in The Book of Lists. Fear of public speaking outranked the fear of death by a two-to-one margin! Unrealistic as this may seem, the fact remains that while many people lack the training and stamina to effectively deliver a clear thought, today’s fast-paced, technological world is in desperate need of good communicators and leaders. The person with strong communication skills has a clear advantage over tongue-tied colleagues – especially in a competitive job market. Toastmasters is the most efficient, enjoyable and affordable way of gaining great communication skills. One local club, Noontime Toastmasters Club of San Luis Obispo has been helping members to build self confidence and communication and leadership skills since June 1, 1983. The group has 23 members and meets every 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Tuesday at First American Title "The Community Room" on the corner of Pacific and Morro, downtown San Luis Obispo from noon to 1PM. The club's website is http://sanluistoastmasters.freetoasthost.ws/. Guests are not required to speak, but are welcome to do so.     Central Coast artists reflect on the holiday season and what matters most. All works must be 16" x 16" or smaller and under $500. What Really Matters by Petra Rockwell Patterson November 2009. It matters that we learn the difference between what to hold close and what to let go. It matters how we ease into the day, nodding our heads in gratitude. It matters that we right ourselves, find our inner compass and keep a steady hand on the tiller. It matters that we lift our heads and notice who and what needs tending. It matters that we look to a higher power and welcome a relationship. It matters that we dig, polish our talents and share them with others. It matters that we are resilient, forgiving of ourselves and others, ready to start fresh each day. It matters that we are flexible, can bend and stretch and reach. It matters that we celebrate the joy, fill a room with laughter. It matters that we live in the present, showering those that matter to us with love. It matters that we embrace our differences, and nurture the best in one another. Every smile, every gentle touch, every one matters.

“Working with the Emotions” With Dharma Teacher Bart Mendel - Disturbing emotional states such as attachment, aggression, ignorance, pride and jealousy create confusion for ourselves and others. From a Buddhist point of view, emotions can be transformed into the wisdom energy of the enlightened mind. This course will explore how to work with emotions in meditation and in our daily lives. Bart Mendel has been a Buddhist practitioner and teacher for over 30 years and has taught the Dharma extensively throughout the US , Canada and Europe . From years of mixing the dharma with an endless stampede of worldly challenges, Bart’s teaching style has evolved into a natural blend of eloquence, insightfulness and humor. In 1997, he accepted an invitation with his wife Suzan Garner to open a Bodhi Path Buddhist Center in Santa Barbara where he served as Resident Teacher for over ten years. Bart and Suzan oversee a number of major dharma projects, including serving as Directors for Siddhartha Foundation International.
