Habitat for Humanity uses donations of funding, materials, professional services, and volunteer labor to build simple, decent homes, which are then sold to qualified, very low-income families. Mortgage payments are used to build more Habitat homes locally on the Central Coast. All habitat home buyers complete 500 hours of volunteer labor towards the construction of their home.     Contact: Barbara Ricardo   805 489 2822   barbara@templeofthepeople.org
On the occasion of our 110th Annual Convention, The Temple of the People in Halcyon wishes to extend an invitation to everyone to visit our Open House on Saturday, August 1, 2009, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. Established in Syracuse, New York, in 1898, The Temple of the People group moved to Halcyon in 1903. Following the philosophy of Helena P. Blavatsky, Temple members share the goal of conscious unity in the Heart of God. The Temple building is a symbol of this Heart Consciousness. The greatest commandment of the Temple is to practice the Golden Rule, to manifest the impulse of unity in every thought, word, and deed, and to honor all life. The Temple motto is, “Creeds Disappear, Hearts Remain.” At the corner of Halcyon Road and Temple Street, we would like to share with you our Blue Star Memorial Temple, a unique structure, surrounded by white pillars supporting the porch roof. Triangular in shape it symbolizes the heart, the Unity of all Life, as well as the many trinities central to the spiritual core of all the great teachings throughout history. The University Center Gallery directly behind the Temple currently exhibits Harold Forgostein's twenty-two large oil paintings depicting scenes from the Song of Hiawatha. Next on Temple Street is Hiawatha Lodge, showcasing wonderful art work from our members in Russia, as well as the place where we would like you to be our guests for tea. The William Quan Judge Library, located on LaDue Street, welcomes you to browse through the 14,000 volumes covering a myriad of subjects. The Halcyon Store is always a treat to explore. There will be hosts and hostesses in all locations. The Temple of the People as a religious society is non-denominational, with members and friends coming from a wide variety of religious backgrounds. Everyone is welcome. Daily, at noon, we hold a Healing Service, with prayers and meditations directed toward the health and safety of the world. Sunday morning services, open to all, include monthly lectures, a monthly communion service symbolizing the re-union of Spirit and Matter, and a monthly meditation service.

    Contact: Brian    805-461-6162   bcoburn@slolibrary.org
Do you have a yearning to ride your motorcycle to unexplored areas of California? Come to the Atascadero Library's Martin Polin Community Room on Wednesday, August 5th, from 6:30 to 7:30 PM and get inspired! Clement Salvadori, author of Motorcycle Journeys Through California and Baja, will give you helpful tips and on what to see in our Golden State on your two-wheeled machine. There will be a slide show showing the various haunts Mr. Salvadori has visited and his books will be available for purchase. Clement Salvadori has led a fascinating life and not all of it in California! Acquiring one of his first motorcycles at eighteen, an Indian Chief, he attended Harvard and was a demolitions expert with the Green Berets. He has traveled motorcycles through parts of Asia, Africa, Australia, New Zealand and north from Panama. In Boston, he began writing free-lancing travel stories to motorcycle magazines and drove taxis to pay the rent. In 1980, a moto-mag based in Laguna Beach, California called Clem up with a job offer. We don't pay much, he was told, but you can have all the motorcycles you want to ride. Done deal! He spent seven years with the magazine. After which, he continued his life as a free-lance writer. In 1991, he moved to Atascadero. In the past 30 years, Mr. Salvadori has published over a thousand articles and is the author of five books. The Atascadero Library is located at 6850 Morro Road.

For more information about the program, call the Atascadero Library at 461-6162 and ask for Brian.

    Contact: Arts & Lectures   805.893.3535   aandl-info@sa.ucsb.edu
“Masterfully assembled!” - Los Angeles Times

A fascinating account of virtual history, Virtual JFK uses archival documentary footage, on-screen testimony and inventive graphics to argue one of the most debated “what if” scenarios in the history of U.S. foreign policy: What would President John F. Kennedy have done in Vietnam if he had not been assassinated in 1963, and had he been re-elected in 1964? The film invokes a series of highly-charged crises Kennedy faced and a generous selection of his responses to an often hostile press corps that make for a compelling and surprisingly entertaining experience. This presentation is about reconstructing what the vegetation around the Dana Adobe may have been in the 1840s and how our sketchy knowledge of historic California botany may help guide plans to restore native plants in a now largely alien plant context. Over the last three decades, as a working botanist, Michael Curto has pursued interests in plant geography, ecology, and taxonomy, especially regarding Western North American grasses. Along with Linda Allen, he conducted a botanical inventory of the Dana Adobe site in 2000.

Thrice, an exhibition of work by assemblage artist J. Shea, painter Tanner Goldbeck, and photographer Larry Mills, opens Saturday August 8, at the AFS Gallery, from 6:00 pm-10:00 pm. The show runs from August 8 through September 12. The evening includes DJ sets by Face the Music. Thrice will reunite Shea, Goldbeck, and Mills; core members of the Haley Collective. The Haley Collective was started in Santa Barbara in the 1990’s by a small group of relocated artists from across the country. According to J. Shea, “The Haley Street Collective acted as a catalyst for people to get out on the streets: to hold more events, support local shows, and to enjoy the energy and interaction.” Shea elaborates, “The Haley Collective created its own unsanctioned energy involving all sorts of mixed media: from paintings, photography, sculpture and collage, to music, projections, hot rods and art cars.” Larry Mills says that the artists will be, “Breaking it down to the bare bones…we will be exhibiting work as a threesome only. It's all going down at Art From Scrap, which is located in the same neighborhood where the collective joined forces for the first time.” Tanner Goldbeck adds, “If you're raging around Santa Barbara Saturday August 8th, stop by and stare at some new creations.... and hang out for a bit.” Art From Scrap is Santa Barbara’s Environmental Education and Art Center. The AFS Gallery is located upstairs at Art From Scrap. Rotating shows hang throughout the year bringing together art lovers, collectors and local artists.

    Contact: margie busman   805-962-2571   margie@sbpermaculture.org
Santa Barbara Permaculture Network continues its Permaculture Around the World series, this time welcoming Robyn Francis from Australia as she speaks about her past and future visits to Cuba where she and other Australian permaculturists have been credited with helping Cuba transform the islands agriculture to a more sustainable model through permaculture. Climate Change and Peak Oil are topics on the minds of many Americans today. There is much to learn from Cuba's response to the sudden loss of cheap and abundant oil in the early 1990's with the fall of the Soviet Union and the continued U.S. Embargo in place since the 1960's. Cuba's industrial model of agriculture under the Soviets was highly mechanized with monoculture crops reliant on petro-based pesticides and fertilizers. The era in Cuba following the Soviet collapse is known to Cubans as the "Special Period" when it lost more than 50 percent of it oil imports, much of its food, and 85 percent of its trade economy. Transportation halted, people went hungry, and the average Cuban lost 30 pounds. Dictated by reality, Cubans began to bring agriculture into the city with urban gardens, cultivating vegetables wherever they could.  A small group of Australians assisted in this grass-roots effort, coming to Cuba in 1993 to teach Permaculture, a system based on sustainable agriculture that uses far less energy. With a grant from the Cuban government they set up the first Permaculture demonstration site, that evolved into the Foundation for Nature and Humanity's Urban Permaculture demonstration site located in Havana. Today 50 percent of Havana's vegetables come from inside the city, while in other Cuban towns and cities, urban gardens produce from 80 percent to more than 100 percent of what they need. The event takes place on Saturday, Aug 8 , 6:30 pm at the downtown Santa Barbara Public Library, 40 East Anapamu St, Santa Barbara. Donation $5, no reservations needed.

Call/email for more info 771-9706, susan@susanwoodlifecoach.com. The Course is a complete self-study spiritual thought system designed to retrain our minds to bring peace to ourselves and to the world. The Course teaches that the way to universal love and peace is by undoing guilt through forgiveness. It thus focuses on the healing of relationships and emphasizes that it is but one version of the universal curriculum, of which there are "many thousands." Consequently, even though the language of the Course is that of traditional Christianity, it expresses a non-sectarian, non-denominational spirituality. A Course in Miracles, therefore, is a universal spiritual teaching, not a religion.

Summer Class: A Thinking Person’s Guide to the Bible. The Bible is the world’s best-selling book but it is also a puzzle to many people. Unlike most other books, reading it from the beginning to the end can be confusing. This is because it is not one coherent text, but is a collection of books written at different times and by different people – often many people contributed to one book. The picture is complicated by the many different translations and paraphrases available. This class, sponsored by the Hollister Institute and taught by the Rev. Caroline Hall, PhD, will look at the historical contexts within which the Bible was written and consider the different literary genres it contains. The course will be of interest to those who want to understand more about the best-seller which is foundational to our culture, as well as those who want to read and understand the Bible for their spiritual lives. There will be four Wednesday evening meetings starting August 13 at 7pm. Classes last about 90 minutes and are open to everyone. There is no charge, though donations are invited. The Hollister Institute meets at St. Benedict’s Episcopal Church, 2220 Snowy Egret Lane, Los Osos. The church is located at the corner of Los Osos Valley Rd and Clark Valley Rd.

HopeDance FiLMs presents.... MAD CITY CHICKENS San Luis Obispo: Wednesday, August 12, 7pm at the San Luis Obispo Public Library (Osos and Palm). Suggested donation $7. With special guest Christine Heinrichs author of “How To Raise Chickens“ and “How to Raise Poultry“ (and she is featured in the film!) plus local chicken folks! Mad City Chickens is a sometimes wacky, sometimes serious look at the people who keep urban chickens in their backyards. From chicken experts and authors to a rescued landfill hen or an inexperienced family that decides to take the poultry plunge—and even a mad scientist and giant hen taking to the streets—it’s a humorous and heartfelt trip through the world of backyard chickendom. HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE: ~ Mother Earth News Editor-in-Chief, Cheryl Long. ~ Leading bird flu expert, Dr. Michael Greger. ~ Rare behind-the-scenes at Murray McMurray Hatchery. ~ Backyard Poultry editor, Elaine Belanger. ~ Society for the Preservation of Poultry Antiquities, Christine Heinrichs (from Cambria, who will be here!). ~ Stunning results from nutritional study on pastured eggs. ~ Follow an urban family for an entire year as they take the poultry plunge. ~ A factory farm hen that refused to die even after being gassed and dumped at a landfill (see photo below). PLUS… coops, birds, eggs, art, images from the Seattle Tilth group, founding members of the Mad City Chickens group, a California musical hen, a Texas life-saving flock… and yes… even a mad professor and a giant chicken find their way into the mix. “I never thought I would sit here mesmerized, open-mouthed over a chicken movie,” declared one audience member at the end of the evening. Neither did I. - Kristian Knutsen, Isthmus Daily Page. “I think Mad City Chickens will be THE major film that will help move chickens back to the city. Not only because people want a closer connection to the food they eat, but because chickens are fun, sweet and to hang out with chickens is much more fun than watching TV.” - Bob Banner, publisher of edibleSLO

The Pewter Plough Playhouse Cambria, CA

“SAME TIME, NEXT YEAR”, one of the most popular and acclaimed romantic comedies of all time. July 10 through August 15.

The Pewter Plough is presenting "SAME TIME, NEXT YEAR” by Bernard Slade, a touching story of love, romance, and ultimately friendship, trust and insight into our evolving culture. Doris and George are star-struck lovers, seemingly happily married to others, who are smitten when they meet at a California country inn and begin a unique relationship which leads them to continue meeting for an annual clandestine rendezvous at the same time and place for the next 25 years. As they become closer and mature over the years, the play captures the inevitable changes in their lives and also the changes in our society, the counterculture spawned in the 60's, the women's movement, the Vietnam War, music, fashions, etc., all cleverly reflected in the story. Contains mature themes.

The play originally ran four years on Broadway, becoming one of the longest running shows on record, winning a Tony Award for leading actress Ellen Burstyn, who reprised her role in the successful movie, opposite Alan Alda. "SAME TIME, NEXT YEAR” has become an enduring favorite of audiences everywhere. The Pewter Plough presented a very well received Readers' Theatre version of the play a year ago, with the present cast, which paved the way for this full production.

The cast features Kelli Rodda as Doris and David Norum as George, both of whom have appeared before on the PPP stage in leading roles. The Director is Anita Schwaber, who has directed many shows at the Plough.

On most Saturday nights, the Pewter Plough Lounge features the outstanding pianist/vocalist David Manion performing at intermission and after the show.

Preview night is Friday, July 10, at 7:30 pm, tickets are $12. Gala Champagne Opening is Saturday, July 11, at 7:30 pm, including a Champagne and Dessert Reception after the show, all tickets $25. Performances continue on Friday and Saturday nights, at 7:30 pm, through August 15. Sunday Matinees, at 3 pm, on July 19, 26, August 2 and 9. Produced and narrated by Hollywood icon Leonardo Di Caprio, the film looks at the impending crises of global warming, peak oil, and destruction of land and ocean habitats and concludes that “humanity and nature are on a collision course” as we arrive at the 11th hour. The film poses a key question to viewers: Will we humans have the will to create a sustainable world in time to prevent catastrophe? And if we do have the will, what de we need to do as individuals, communities and nations to make the needed changes? We will discuss the film as it applied to San Luis Obispo County and especially to the North County.

The film showing is one of several North County activities planned by the Transition Towns Paso Robles group. The Transition movement began in England and has migrated across the ocean. There are now 170 Communities who are officially “Transition Towns”, and many more who embrace its principles (such as Smart Cities, a Sierra Club initiative. Their primary purpose is to meet the three toughest challenges of our times: peak oil; economic instability; and climate change by rebuilding community resilience and self-reliance.     Contact: Mayrene Ogier   466-1328   atasarts@fix.net
The Atascadero Art Association Celebrates it's Fall All Member Exhibit with an Opening Reception on Saturday, August 15 from 1-3pm in the Martin Polin Room of the Atascadero Library. The exhibit runs Aug 1- Nov 7 and features the work of Nathan Koren. The exhibit is open most Saturday from 11am-3pm. Almost 20 years ago, at age 13, Nathan Koren was approached by the librarian to create a set of pictures giving visible form to principles of Library etiquette. Nathan created colorful works of art that hung in the Library in the early 1990's. Although Nathan has gone on to an international career as an architect and transportation planner, this early work deserves resurrection, and what could be a more appropriate place than in the very library for which the series was first created? The work of many other fine artists will also be on display, but only Nathan Koren's will remind visitors of the catastrophic consequences of grabbing a book with muddy hands or eating a messy--oops!!--taco while reading. Where there are a few examples of what you SHOULD do in the Library, most are explicit counter-examples; for this reason, the exhibit is called "you did WHAT in the Library???"

The exhibit, “A Sweet Pea Centennial” commemorates one hundred years of growing sweet peas commercially in Lompoc. Named Lompoc’s official city flower in 1959, the first planting of sweet peas occurred in 1908 when Robert Rennie planted one-half acre at the request of a visiting Scotsman (C.C. Morse). The sweet peas planted on his ranch at the southwest corner of what is now Central Avenue and H Street were so successful that a well-established flower and vegetable seed company owner in Philadelphia was soon notified. W. Atlee Burpee had been looking for a west coast experimental farm. In 1909, Mr. Burpee bought about fifty acres of land in the Lompoc Valley and leased another one hundred acres. In 1909, a total of 120 acres were planted in Sweet Peas – their first commercial planting in Lompoc 100 years ago! The Sweet Pea exhibit includes historic documents, photographs, and memorabilia of the flower seed industry collected over the last century. Along with these historic elements are pieces of “Sweet Pea-themed” art contributed by several local artists including Gill Andersen, Vicki Andersen, Debby Fuller, Linda Gooch, Elizabeth Monks Hack, Marilyn Hains, Jan Manfrina, Carol J. Oliveira, Julia Rodgers, and Kiki Shappell.

The exhibit opens with a reception Saturday, June 13, 2 - 4 p.m.

2:30 PM  -  5:00 PM Sedgwick Reserve in the Santa Ynez Valley -- Q&A
    Contact: Roger   805-962-6316   President@santabarbarahumanists.org
Set in the heart of the Santa Ynez Valley, the Sedgwick Reserve stands not only as a historical tribute to the Valley's agricultural heritage, but offers a breathtaking picture of what California was like for centuries, before westbound settlers brought "progress" to this part of the globe. The Sedgwick Reserve contains much of the watershed of Figueroa Creek; from rolling oak savannah; to grassland harboring many native grasses; to the gray pine forest extending into the Los Padres National Forest to the north. Deer and other wildlife may be spotted in the meadows and watering along the creek as it flows toward the Santa Ynez River. Today the Sedgwick Reserve is being used extensively for research, arts and education programs: up to 6,400 visitors a year. Scientists from UCSB and other institutions around the world participate in ecological and agricultural research at Sedgwick. Major research projects include the study of oak tree regeneration; native grass competition with invasive plant species; the ecological role of pocket gophers; and many other studies related to the rich populations of native plants, lichen, insects, reptiles, and vertebrate animals that make their home in the Reserve. Kate McCurdy, Director of the Sedgwick Reserve, and Nick DiCroce, a docent there, will talk and answer questions about this marvelous natural area of Santa Barbara County. 2:30pm socializing, 3pm meeting starts Saturday, August 15th in the Patio Room at Vista del Monte, 3775 Modoc Road (Las Positas exit off the 101, midway between UCSB and SBCC) in Santa Barbara. Presented by the Humanist Society of Santa Barbara, $2 student or $5 general donations would be appreciated. Website http://sbhumanists.org. Optional dinner with the speakers at 5pm for $25: please phone or e-mail for menu and reservations.

Categories: Live music; concerts; benefits. What: The Song Tree Concert Series. Why: A monthly concert presented by the nonprofit Live Oak Unitarian Universalist Congregation. Mission: “Building Community by Sharing Good Music”. Who: Singer/guitarist/songwriter Nathan McEuen. When: Saturday August 15th, 7:30 p.m. Where: Live Oak Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 820 N. Fairview, Goleta. Admission price: $15 suggested donation. Artist is available for interview. Contact: Tom Lee, (805) 403-2639. Web Site: http://www.songtree.org . Artist’s Web Site: http://nathanmceuen.me/ On Saturday, August 15th, the Song Tree Concert Series will welcome back Nathan McEuen. Nathan won unanimous acclaim for his trio’s performance at Song Tree in 2007. His work has been called “future retro folk rock,” but while his music acknowledges folk traditions, little is overtly “folk.” His own hard work and creative magic has gotten him to stages like The Grand Ol’ Opry and Tonight Show with Jay Leno. He has opened for David Crosby and Graham Nash, Dave Mason, Kenny Loggins, John Denver, Dwight Yoakam, Monte Montgomery, and performed with Kevin Nealon (SNL), Brett Dennen, and Mario Calire (Ozomatli, Wallflowers). He has worked with Greg Penny (producer K.D. Lang, Elton John), Paul Williams, Willie Nelson, and many others. Those experiences have been serving his career as he creates original material, records albums, and tours the country under the umbrella of his own independent label: Lint Records. The Song Tree Concert Series benefits the non-profit Live Oak Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Goleta, California. Information is available by phone at (805) 403-2639; by email at Concerts@SongTree.org; or on the web at www.songtree.org. “Engrossing and satisfying. Full of character, it is balanced by delicacy, humor, and a sense of innocence.” - The New York Times

Winner of five prizes at Sweden’s Academy Awards including Best Picture, Everlasting Moments tells the story of Maria, an early twentieth-century working class woman who has her life forever altered when she wins a camera in a lottery. A time of social change and unrest, war and poverty, Maria’s camera grants her new eyes with which to see the world, and brings the charming photographer “Piff Paff Puff” into her life. Trouble ensues when Maria’s alcoholic, womanizing husband feels threatened by the young man and his wife’s newfound outlook on life. (Jan Troell, 2008, 131 min.)

Peppino D'Agostino, voted "BEST ACOUSTIC GUITARIST" by readers of Guitar Player Magazine’s 2007 Reader’s Choice Awards, is not your conventional steel-string acoustic guitarist. He cannot be pinned down to a particular style and that's exactly the way this internationally acclaimed virtuoso wants it. "I'm not just an acoustic guitar player," he said. "I want to stretch the limits of the acoustic guitar in terms of melody, harmony and rhythm, adding percussive effects while addressing those first three elements. Ultimately, my mission is to touch people in a heartfelt way both emotionally and intellectually." A familiar performer to this area, Peppino has been coming to play for Slofolks every August for over twenty years. Tickets are: $22. Steel String Acoustic Guitarist. “Peppino writes wonderful guitar pieces. He's one of my favorite composers for this cranky instrument. Plus, he's a tone player. I love his sound... gets the resin and the wood." Leo Kottke. www.slofolks.org.

City Nights Jazz presents Bebop great Lanny Morgan, performing with the Mike Raynor Group, August 21st, the Inn at Morro Bay, from 7-10pm. For more information go to http://www.CityNightsJazz.com. A little about Lanny Morgan: Countless critics and fans agree-in the U.S. and especially elsewhere-accounting for two upcoming repeat tours of the U.K. (April/May and October/November, 2003), where he has become a frequent frontliner with British musicians. As a leader of his own group and a solo performer, he has been on the scene here and abroad since 1969, playing every major jazz club and festival that exists and guesting as soloist/clinician at colleges and universities in nearly every state of the union. Morgan first came to prominence in New York, as the young lead alto for Maynard Ferguson's Big Band of the sixties, as well as the MF Sextet of the same era, and clubbing with his own group in the Big Apple. He has occupied many hot seats in his career-in bands led by Charlie Barnet, Tommy Alexander, Sal Salvador, Howard McGhee, Bill Berry, Bob Florence, Bill Holman, Shorty Rogers, Terry Gibbs and Frank Capp. And, he is a 31-year member of the Grammy-winning Supersax. The most recent Morgan-led recording is an all-Charlie Parker project for Fresh Sound Records, A Suite for Yardbird, Lanny Morgan interprets the compositions of Charlie Parker. The repertoire includes both familiar and lesser known tunes, and features Morgan's interpretations of Bird originals, along with preeminent players Tom Warrington on bass, drummer Paul Kreibich, and the late (2000) pianist Lou Levy. This follows Pacific Standard (Contemporary) and The Lanny Morgan Quartet (VSOP). In the nineties, Lanny juggled his own jazz performing and recording ventures with a touring schedule worldwide as one of Natalie Cole's regular support players, which included fellow jazz veterans such as Harold Jones and Jim Hughart, during her seven "Unforgettable" years.

Sirens will be heard along the coast between Cayucos and the northern Nipomo Mesa, including the Five Cities area and the City of San Luis Obispo. Remember Saturday, August 22nd. 12 noon and 12:30 it's only a siren test.

Aug. 22-- THE DANA ADOBE, FROM DECLINE TO PRESERVATION AND RESTORATION by Len Hoskins, DANA Board Member at the historic Dana Adobe, 671 S. Oakglen Ave. Nipomo. After its period as a highly successful and important Rancho of the Californio period, the Dana Adobe was eventually abandoned, fell to ruin and was almost lost forever. The timely takeover by the San Luis Obispo County Historical Society in the late1960s started a preservation and restoration effort that is continuing today. For several years Len Hoskins has worked with a small group known as the “Wednesday Volunteers” to support a variety of necessary tasks to preserve the Adobe and land. Under the leadership and guidance of Adobe caretaker Aaron Regez and general contractor, Mike Fairbrother, Len and other volunteers undertake a variety of tasks including; earthquake retrofitting, removing concrete plaster, restoring and rebuilding Adobe walls, demolition of historically incorrect infrastructure and much of the finish work in the restored rooms. Len also serves on the Restoration Task force and the Board of directors.

The workshop is complimentary and open to the public. Professor Droullard teaches Attention Mechanics, part of the University of Philosophical Research Masters Degree program in Transformational Psychology. The one hour workshop is titled “The Power of Attention: Accessing the Key to your destiny and taking control of your life.” Droullard explains, “We are what we do with our attention. Attention is the primary manageable resource of human consciousness. In this workshop we will separate and distinguish attention from thought. This will allow each participant to establish an objective inner observer. This powerful technique will then be combined with an ancient form of intelligent mindful decision-making that can act faster than an individual can think. The resulting benefit is achieving the possibility of a personal power of veto in the earliest moments when the first glimmer of anger, fear or worry emerges in awareness.” Copies of Professor Droullard’s book will be available for purchase and Local Event Coordinator Lili Sinclaire can be contacted at 805-481-5171 or lilisinclaire@gmail.com for further details.

Joining him this year, hailed as the world’s leading bassist – Michael Manring – a Grammy-nominated composer. A long time favorite, this show is always a sell-out. Be sure to get your tickets early. He's one of my favorite composers for this cranky instrument. Plus, he's a tone player. I love his sound... gets the resin and the wood." Leo Kottke.

Award winning journalist and surfer Jaimal Yogis will sign and discuss his critically acclaimed memoir, Saltwater Buddha: a surfer's quest to find Zen on the sea at Chaucer's Books. Fed up with suburban teenage life, Jaimal ran off to Hawaii with little more than a copy of Hermann Hesse's Siddhartha and enough cash for a surfboard. His journey is a coming-of-age saga that takes him from communes to monasteries and the icy New York shore. Equal parts spiritual memoir and surfer's tale, this is a chronicle of finding meditative focus in the barrel of a wave and eternal truth in the great salty blue.

“A near perfect blend of humor and heartbreak, a lyrical masterwork... Assayas creates that rare summer movie – one that matters. Lots of films are called haunting, Summer Hours truly is.” Rolling Stone

The divergent paths of three forty-something siblings collide when their mother, heiress to her uncle’s exceptional 19th century art collection, dies suddenly. Left to come to terms with themselves and their differences, Adrienne (Juliette Binoche), a successful New York designer, Frederic (Charles Berling), an economist and university professor in Paris, and Jeremie (Jérémie Renier), a dynamic businessman in China, confront the end of childhood, their shared memories, background and unique vision of the future.     Brand new bluegrass band Little Black Train will be performing free of charge at the historic Hesperia Hall in Bradley on Friday evening, August 28 free of charge. Little Black Train is an exciting new project for Central Coast acoustic wizards John Weed (fiddle), Kenny Blackwell (mandolin), and Stuart Mason (guitar). Named after a traditional Carter Family gospel song, the group fuses old-time Americana with Celtic and original pieces to produce a crowd-pleasing mix of "oldternative" bluegrass music. Weed and Mason are both members of international touring Celtic band Molly's Revenge. Both have performed at festivals in China, Scotland, Ireland, and many of the United States, while Kenny tours regularly with guitarist Dorian Michael. The free Hesperia Hall show on Friday August 28 will begin at 7:30pm. Hesperia Hall is located at 51602 Bryson-Hesperia Road in Bradley (93426), just a half-hour drive north of Paso Robles. Historic Hesperia Hall was constructed as the Shiloh Baptist Church in 1894 using native redwood timber, and has survived virtually intact from that time due to the dedication of the local community.

Sponsored by The Home Depot Foundation and Goleta Valley Beautiful. Goleta keeps getting greener thanks to Goleta Valley Beautiful's efforts to improve the area's health and livability through tree planting. The group's series of NeighborWoods projects are helping to revitalize Goleta's public housing complexes by beautifying the area and increasing energy efficiency. The community improvement project will take place as follows: 8/29/09 - 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Sandpiper Apartments, 375 Ellwood Beach Drive. On Saturday, August 29, volunteers will plant trees at Sandpiper Apartments as Goleta Valley Beautiful continues its NeighborWoods initiative. Joining residents of the 64-unit complex will be Team Depot associates from The Home Depot store in Goleta. "We're thrilled that The Home Depot shares our same local community values and is showing that through their involvement. The Home Depot's core values of 'Giving Back' and 'Doing the Right Thing' are a perfect fit for the impact we're trying to make in this community," said Ken Knight, Executive Director of Goleta Valley Beautiful. This planting is the third event in Goleta Valley Beautiful's NeighborWoods initiative. Already this summer the group's volunteers have planted and maintained dozens of trees and vines at affordable housing sites throughout the region, and on October 24, they will join hands to plant 50 trees at Positano Apartments. Through its partnership with the Housing Authority of the County of Santa Barbara, Goleta Valley Beautiful is helping to make local housing communities healthier, greener, and more affordable. This campaign to improve the quality of life in Goleta through trees was made possible by a $10,000 National NeighborWoods Grant from the Alliance for Community Trees and The Home Depot Foundation. Goleta Valley Beautiful is one of ten organizations nationwide that received this highly competitive challenge grant in support of urban forestry and affordable housing partnership.

Details: EVERY YEAR ABOUT THIS TIME, all over California (and in a few other states), the faint sounds can be heard. Tentative at first, then more assured, and louder. And closer. As the date approaches, the sounds become musical, rhythmic, and -- dare we say it? -- cool! And they're coming together in a hall near you on August 29. Who are these noisemakers, and what is their sound? They're the Cal Poly Collegians Alumni Big Band -- twenty talented musicians who bring the swingin' sounds of Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Les Brown and more to San Luis Obispo every August. For everyone who is mature enough to remember the Big Bands of the 1940s to 1960s, and for every young person who is enjoying the current wave of enthusiasm for swing dancing, the date will be a memorable one indeed. Mark your calendar! The Cal Poly Collegians Alumni Big Band will present a dynamic program of big band jazz and swing for listening and dancing in the Ballroom at the Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo on Saturday, August 29, from 7:30 to 10:30pm. (No admission will be charged; voluntary contributions for the Collegians' jazz scholarship at Cal Poly will be invited.) The all-male Collegians ensemble -- predecessor to today's renowned University Jazz Bands at Cal Poly -- was founded in 1937 by long-time Cal Poly Music Department Head Harold P. Davidson (for whom the music classroom building is named).

“Understanding the Relationship between Thoughts, Emotions and True Happiness in Body and Mind” with Dharma Teacher Dawa Tarchin Phillips

August 30, 10 am to noon

How does your mind work and manifest thoughts, feelings and your perceptions? What is the underlying reality of your being? Every moment of every day you are involved in, and dealing with the manifestations of your body and the experiences and expressions of your mind. They make up who you are and what you identify with most intimately. As you go through life, you experience manifold different states of physical and mental challenges in the search of well-being. During this teaching series we will explore the Buddha’s advice on how to correctly view the reality of ones body and the productions of ones mind when our aim is to reduce suffering. Teachings based on the 5 Skandhas and 51 Mental Events.

Buddhist Dharma Teacher Dawa Tarchin Phillips completed two 3-year meditation retreats as a student of the Mahamudra meditation master Gendun Rinpoche at Dhagpo Kundreul Ling Monastery in France where he received the transmission of the Karma Kagyu Lineage. Prior to focusing on meditative practices, Dawa pursued advanced studies in the arts, a career in the entertainment industry and worked with severely ill cancer and cardiac patients. Today, he teaches throughout Europe and the US , offering guidance to those on the spiritual path and is the resident teacher of Bodhi Path Center Santa Barbara.
