   8:00 PM CUTS
    Contact: Casey Caldwell   805-708-3273   casey0caldwell@gmail.com
"CUTS," a documentary theater piece about the stuff growing on our heads (and elsewhere), will be premiering at Center Stage Theater September 5 and 6. Directed by Westmont Theater graduate Casey Caldwell, the show focuses on the poignant and silly stories people share about their hair. The play is based on real-life interviews conducted by Caldwell and his cast, Sarah Halford, Marie Ponce, and Nolan Hamlin, combined with original choreography and songs by Greg Wadsworth.

"Because hair is something everyone has it serves as a common ground. Though these stories are mostly ridiculous, they also reflect where we stand socially, economically, and culturally," Caldwell said. "The piece straddles the gap between the silly and the serious, with stories about a waxing catastrophe next to issues of race and even death, like the woman we met whose last memento of her mother was a lock of her hair."

The project was originally shown at Westmont's Porter Theater last March to full houses and is making its anticipated second run at Center Stage. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased at www.centerstagetheater.org or at the theater's box office.

Contact: Wildling Art Museum   805-688-1082   info@wildlingmuseum.org
The Wildling Art Museum announces its summer 2008 exhibition, Endangered Species: Flora and Fauna in Peril. This exhibition represents the Museum’s first international juried art competition, with 50 artworks selected from nearly 200 entries. The exhibition runs at the Wildling Art Museum from June 22-September 14, 2008. There's a variety of media (drawing, painting, printmaking, photography and sculpture) to depict flora and fauna listed as threatened or endangered in North America by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Over 47 species are represented, among them the California condor, northern spotted owl, grizzly bear, black-footed ferret, Oahu tree snail, Sonora tiger salamander, Mesa Verde cactus, and Texas wild-rice.

“It can be difficult to locate threatened or endangered species and ‘capture’ them artistically without harming them,” points out Penny Knowles, Executive Director of the Wildling Art Museum. “I admire the artists who struggled with these issues to submit such visually stunning entries. The Museum is proud to present an exhibition that will inform and delight--varied not only in the flora and fauna represented, but also in style and media.”

David J. Wagner, Ph.D, a nationally renowned scholar and author of American Wildlife Art (Marquand Books, 2008), served as consulting curator and tour director for the three-year project. A full-color, 64-page catalogue includes all of the featured artworks as well as an introduction by Dr. Wagner and an essay by Dr. Michael Tobias, noted author, filmmaker and president of the Dancing Star Foundation.

The Wildling Art Museum is an educational institution dedicated to presenting the art of America’s wilderness and preserving our natural heritage. Exhibition catalogues may be purchased at the Museum, hours are Wednesday through Sunday 11am to 5pm. www.wildlingmuseum.org.

The 9/11 Commission started more than a year late and stopped several million dollars short of a full and complete investigation into the terrorist attacks on the United States, 9/11/2001. Fortunately, many American and European researchers have continued asking important questions about the events before, during and after that day. This evening of films and discussion will show new information that should be used to prevent or prepare against another attack. "Knowledge is power." Presented by Santa Barbara Townhall Meetup. Free event, donations appreciated.

Get out your shovels and dance in the rain! That is what Brad Lancaster’s second volume in his trilogy on Rainwater Harvesting will make you want to do. Join Brad Lancaster on Friday, September 12, at 7pm for a talk and book signing, as he shares his experiences traveling the world learning about harvesting rainwater---with simple landforms and earthworks---in places like India, Peru, Mexico, Africa and the United States, where impoverished landscapes are turned into oases of life.

Harvesting rainwater was once a worldwide technology, but was replaced by pipes, canals, and sprinklers---inefficient and wasteful strategies that are running dry. In his newly published book Rainwater Harvesting for Drylands and Beyond:Vol 2, Water-Harvesting Earthworks, Brad Lancaster shares techniques for designing landscapes that passively harvest water using brilliant, low-tech, regenerative systems to hydrate the land and maximize the benefit that water brings to plants, animals and people.

Water has been identified as a global crisis in the making. Southern California has one of the most piped landscapes ever designed, relying on water from far away that may not be available in the future. Brad's book encourages individuals and government agencies to redesign landscapes to live sustainably in their watersheds. Earthworks, using shovels to large earth moving equipment, can be the foundation strategy for sustainable landscapes.

An “edible festival” featuring sustainable mediterranean foods and organic gardening workshops will held Saturday, September 13 from 10 AM to 2 PM at the San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden, located in the El Chorro Regional Park just off Highway 1 between San Luis Obispo and Morro Bay. The public is invited to this free event where they can meander through the exhibits, attend garden workshops, enjoy special tastings, and peruse the plethora of fall plants for sale.

For the second year, the University California Cooperative Education (UCCE) Master Gardeners are presenting their popular Tomato Extravaganza, a UCCE Master Gardener signature event. Visitors can taste several varieties of tomatoes and basil and then vote for your favorite in the “people’s choice” category.

Master Gardeners will be holding workshops in the Oak Glen Pavilion. This naturally elegant, straw bale building is the height of sustainability. The mini seminars by the UCEE staff and Master Gardeners are scheduled on Food Safety and the Garden at 11 AM, Ethnobotany of basil at noon, and over-wintering Tomato Plants at 1 PM. Docents will be available to talk about all the sustainable elements of the building in between workshops.

A number of local sustainable farmers and vendors — those whose farming practices incorporate socially just, humane, economically viable, and environmentally sound practices — will be in attendance sharing their delectable edibles and knowledge including award-winning Tibor Canyon, Master baker Chirro Pasciuto, Rinconada Dairy, Cecilia Garcis's pistachios, Jennifer of 7th Heaven Farm and Sweet Earth Organic Chocolates.

The day will be filled will music in the Dixieland style by Jeff Beaumont and his "Friends", Jalisco Folklorio dancers will entertain in the center of the pavilion at 1 PM. Art of all sorts will be featured on the grassy area surrounding the pavilion and the Ferrari Club of America will feature some of the Ferraris to be exhibited at their fund raiser in Avila in October. Featured artists for the day will include DALE EVERS and ANNE LADDON, both of whom have made a name for themselves in the local area. Dale is a metal sculpturist of world renoun and Anne is not only an artist, but is attempting to establish an art gallery/studio in the old Pioneer Auto Parts, opposite the part in Paso Robles. Children artists will enjoy an area all their own, where they can produce whatever comes to mind. Face painting for the children will also be featured. Local cultural groups, of which there are quite a few...will be represented for information by displays and brochures. These groups, many of which have been in existence for over 30 years, are without a performing theatre to exhibit their talents. Project Theatre Foundation was established to fund-raise for an arts center and performing arts facility on the north county Cuesta College campus to fulfill that need.

Come and enjoy an afternoon of art in the beautiful surroundings of the River Oaks Pavilion.

The raw, gut-wrenching sound of Elmore James inspired countless blues and rock musicians, including the Rolling Stones and the Allman Brothers Band. With stunning images of their colorful blossoms and unusual growth forms, this program showcases a number of species and varieties that occur in California's deserts and coastal areas. The main slideshow-talk will be approximately 40 minutes, with time for questions. A second 10-minute show set to music illustrates the beauty of these remarkable succulents. Following the presentation, Stephen will sign copies of his new book from Cachuma Press, "Cacti, Agaves, and Yuccas of California and Nevada."

About the Book:
California and Nevada are known for their astonishing array of plant life, and few components of this diverse flora are more intriguing than the cacti, agaves, and yuccas. These spiny succulents -- which share many of the same arid habitats -- have long been a source of fascination for explorers, naturalists, and scientists. "Cacti, Agaves, and Yuccas of California and Nevada" features more than 60 species with a detailed text that is accompanied by 262 color photographs, 16 botanical watercolors, and 52 range maps. Much more than a field guide, this book examines the natural history of California's and Nevada's cacti, agaves, and yuccas, including their origins, ecology, and conservation. It also provides practical horticultural advice for their cultivation and describes some of the best places to see these remarkable succulents in the wild.

    Contact: Mauricio Jaimerena   310-328-1460   maurice.j@hotmail.com
Hello, September 2008, we celebrate the 19th annual National Alcohol Prevention and Drug Addiction Recovery Month. The month is set aside to educate the public that addiction is a treatable disease that affects us all, spotlights the success of prevention, treatment and recovery, and honors the millions of individual’s worldwide living in recovery. This year’s theme is, “Join the Voices for Recovery: Real People, Real Recovery”. 2008 also marks the fourth year we will be holding Ride for Recovery, and in addition this year Car Clubs with Vintage Cars for this family celebration.

United for Recovery respectfully invites your participation in a major public alcohol and drug awareness event; involving a short motorcycle ride and an opportunity to showcase your vintage cars in celebration of National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month. This event will be held at Harbor Regional Park, Saturday September 27, 2008. A large number of motorcyclists and vintage car owners today are young adults and baby boomers. “Ride for Recovery” is a setting to share with these groups the message that recovery does happen, and that life in recovery is an exciting journey! It is also an excellent opportunity for your car club to come out show your beautiful cars and become part of this event this year and in the future. This is a family event with 50’s music, food, vendor booths, and more. We are expecting many riders and vintage car owners to participate in this event; and numerous attendees and families who do not ride will also be present.

Thank you for your consideration. Please feel free to contact me at (310) 328-1460 or barbara@ncaddsb.com or Candy Cargill-fuller at 310-679-9126 or candy@bhs-inc.org with any questions.     Artists of the World Unite! On September 27th, 5-9pm artists from around the world will unite at CorkStop Studios in Arroyo Grande (Corbett Canyon, 1250 Judith Lane). The Holonic Art Movement was conceived by Pacha in 2006, as a way to interact with local artists, but was soon extended to include over 60 artists from around the world, with the idea of creating a global arts community. The basic idea is simple – multiple artists collaborating to create one distinctive art piece – but the process is unique. The artists either work on the piece one at a time, by painting over or adding to the existing work, or create their own small piece which will later be joined with others to create one bigger mosaic of art. For the past 2 years, canvases have been traveling around the globe from the central coast to such places as Poland, Germany, Peru, Canada and the United Kingdom, with the intention of returning back to Arroyo Grande for the September event. The pieces will be for sale at the first Holonic Art Show at the CorkStop Studios. Proceeds will benefit SONRISA Colombia, a small, private organization that offers homeless children in Colombia food, clothing and assistance with school expenses. Pacha hopes that future shows will generate enough in sales to fund various other charities, both at home and in other countries. For more information visit www.HolonicArts.com

Doors open at 6:00 at which time a catered dinner is available at an additional cost.

Mike Marshall is one of the most innovative players of new instrumental music. Initially rooted in bluegrass, Marshall has consistently explored all the possibilities of his stringed instruments. During the five years (1985-1990) that he was a member of David Grisman's influential Quintet, Marshall toured with Stephane Grappelli, Mark O'Connor, Tony Rice, Bela Fleck, Jerry Douglas and fellow Grisman band member Darol Anger. Meanwhile, Mike had traveled to Brazil and began a love affair with Brazilian 'choro' music, a delightful musical form that combines virtuosic instrumental playing with rhythmically complex improvisations, not unlike bluegrass or early swing music. Mike embarked on an in-depth study of the style that resulted in the CD, Brasil (Duets). This recording showcases Mike at the top of his form as a mandolinist and features many of his musical pals, Andy Narell, Bela Fleck, Edgar Meyer, bassist Michael Manring, and keyboardist and flutist Jovino Santos Neto.

The Choro Famoso band includes Brian Rice (Percussion), Andy Connell (Clarinet & Saxophone), Colin Walker(Guitar), Mike Marshall (Mandolin).
