The Painted Sky Concert Series is pleased to present an evening of outstanding acoustic music with Jill Knight, Lindsay Tomasic and special guest Edo Castro.

SATURDAY NOVEMBER 1ST 8 PM
PAINTED SKY STUDIOS
4111 BRIDGE STREET, CAMBRIA

Audience members are encouraged to bring canned or boxed food donations for the Food Bank Coalition of SLO County.

For those of us on the Central Coast, Jill Knight doesn’t need an introduction. She is truly a world class talent who happens to be a Local. She keeps busy playing regular gigs at the Cambria Pines Lodge, the Inn at Morro Bay and Monteleones Rock in Paso Robles just to name a few. Jill is in demand throughout the US playing festivals and club concerts as well.

Lindsay Tomasic is a busy singer songwriter who runs her own recording studio in Los Angeles. She has become a favorite here on the Central Coast over the past two years performing live throughout San Luis Obispo County.

The evening will begin with multi-instrumentalist Edo Castro. Edo will play a set of Solo bass compositions using a variety of 7 string fretted and Fretless basses. The music is only bass centric from the point that it is his main instrument. What you’ll hear is far from the expected and way beyond the scope of normal bass playing. Edo plays with Jill Knight on a regular basis and stays busy as a studio musician in the bay area.

Seating is limited to around 75 people and tickets are $15.00. You can reserve a seat through the Evite system or purchase tickets in advance. To get an Evite you can email Lindsay at datolitemusic@mac.com.     Primitive Skills Weekend

November 7-10 Camp Ocean Pines is hosting a Primitive Technology Weekend featuring Joe Dabill. Get away from your computer and cell phone for a rare opportunity to make your own bow and arrow from natural materials! You will learn skills from an expert who has been hired by native tribes to teach their children! Joe is a sought-after workshop leader whose works are featured in museums. Participants will learn the physics behind ancient skills as they choose the wood to carve a stick into a powerful, finely-tuned tool! You will learn flint knapping, cordage making, arrow fletching and how to make fire with 2 sticks! During free time you will shoot your bow, throw an atlatl dart, make beads with a hand drill and practice your flint knapping techniques. Participants will “make and take” their own bow, arrow, fire drill, and flint knapping kit, along with many other unique items valued far above the cost of the weekend fee. This is an excellent opportunity to not only gain valuable skills in a beautiful ocean side setting, but also to learn the physics behind the construction and use of these instruments. This weekend also offers an anthropological perspective shedding light on the lives of people in cultures worldwide. Educators will learn activities that have been kid tested and approved. These are fun skills with which to challenge students. These skills will specifically help 3rd and 4th grade teachers with their social science units, naturalists and recreation leaders, and all those interested in the material culture of Native American Stories. Imagine starting a class session by lighting a campfire with two sticks; or using handmade and authentic rhythm instruments to punctuate your stories! Come to this weekend and learn from Joe Dabill, the best primitive technologist around.

Interested in attending? You can register online at www.campoceanpines.org or by giving us a call at (805) 927-0254.

Let’s keep it going! November is the best time of year to plant natives, so they can get a good head start in the cool, rainy season. We have hundreds of native plants we need to get into the ground, watered and mulched, so that wildlife will have improved habitat to live in and we will have a verdant carpet of shrubs and wildflowers to look at next spring. We’ll provide the tools, munchies & drinks. We’ll even give you a chance to win a free Together Green tee shirt or cap! We just need you to bring gloves & a willingness to get your hands dirty.     Whose Fault Is It Anyway?!
The Geology Behind Santa Barbara’s Scenic Beauty

Do you ever look at Santa Barbara’s dramatic moutain backdrop, or the islands offshore and wonder what their story is? Been puzzled by the east-west coastline and why the ocean is to the south? Maybe you knew that a 1926 earthquake changed the course of Santa Barbara's architecture and planning. Or that an 1812 earthquake destroyed both Mission Santa Barbara and Mission La Purisima, and led to La Purisima's relocation.

On Saturday November 8th you have the chance to discover the many geologic forces beyond earthquakes that have literally shaped the Santa Barbara area. Join Santa Barbara City College Geology instructor Jan Dependahl and friends of St. Michael’s University Church-Isla Vista for a geologic excursion through Santa Barbara. By the end of this one-day adventure, recommended for ages 12 and up, you'll have absorbed an understanding and appreciation for Santa Barbara’s fascinating geologic history ... and you will be supporting St. Michael’s Episcopal Campus and Isla Vista Ministry!

St. Mike’s is a community that welcomes everyone, invites you to bring your whole self to church and encourages you to ask lots of questions! Campus and Isla Vista ministry activities include co-sponsorship of Progressive Christian Students @ UCSB, weekly Bilingual Community Yoga & Compline prayer, faculty-student-staff luncheon meetings on various current topics, Sober Halloween party, and more.

The trip will cover areas from the Santa Barbara Riviera to West Goleta. Directions to the meeting location for the tour will be provided upon registration. A $50 per person cost includes continental breakfast, sack lunch, and transportation. Space is limited, so sign up now!

On Saturday, November 8th at 8 pm in the Christopher Cohan Center, the San Luis Obispo Symphony Season continues with one of composer Antonin Dvorák’s most popular and beautiful symphonies, indeed one of the most beloved works in the entire modern repertory. Popularly known as “The New World Symphony,” Dvorák’s Symphony No. 9 in E minor is considered the Bohemian composer’s homage to America. Critics and musicologist’s hail the piece as “quintessentially American” yet “multicultural in scope.” Most audiences will recognize the familiar Largo theme of the 2nd movement as the basis for the song “Goin’ Home” and from its liberal use in western films. Also on the program for this great early autumn concert, is Mendelssohn’s last large orchestral work and one of the most popular and most frequently performed violin concertos of all time. Violinist Alyssa Park will join Maestro Michael Nowak and the orchestra to perform Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 64.

Known among her peers for swinging every note, subtle phrasing, and lyrical writing, this Los Angeles-based pianist/composer/vocalist is a native of western Canada where she grew up playing music from an early age. During pursuit of a classical harp degree in college, Gaea began listening to piano greats Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans and Red Garland among others. This inspired a move East and subsequent graduation from the jazz program at acclaimed McGill University in Montreal. The real learning, however, came from playing on the bandstand with older reputable musicians who spent time playing with greats like Joe Henderson, Wynton Kelly, Ella Fitzgerald. Gaea feels "it's so important to listen and to understand the tradition of this music, and to experience it -to feel swing". A 1999 Canada Council for the Arts grant took Gaea to New York City where she studied with internationally known pianist/composer Richie Beirach. Gaea recently made her California debut as a featured performer at the San Jose Jazz Festival and has been performing professionally as a pianist and recently vocalist for over ten years in many diverse musical contexts. Her experience includes everything from trio to big band to quartet to orchestral performance. Notable artists she has played with as a sideperson include Nancy King, John Stowell, Albert 'Tootie' Heath, Clare Fischer Big Band, Tony Dumas, Bob Sheppard, Ingrid Jensen, Bobby Watson, Dan Faehnle (guitarist with Diana Krall), Earl Palmer and Gilbert Castellanos (member of the Clayton/Hamilton Orchestra).

“The rules are pretty simple. There are only two. Rule number one: You listen. Number two: You pass it on. Hopefully, neither one will be easy for you.” With these words, Hannah Baker begins a series of tapes that comprise significant incidents in her life. Upon finishing the recordings, Hannah packs them in a shoebox and mails them to the first person on an enclosed list. Then she returns home and kills herself.

So begins the acclaimed first novel Thirteen Reasons Why by New York Times best-selling author and San Luis Obispo resident, Jay Asher. Named an American Library Association Best Book for Young Adults, Asher’s novel is described by Publishers Weekly as an “uncommonly polished debut.”

You will have a chance to hear Mr. Asher speak on Thursday, November 13, at the Paso Robles City Library beginning at 6:30 p.m. He will discuss how he came to write this novel, how he got published, and how he became an author. Following his presentation, Jay will have copies of his book available for purchase and signing.

Because of the novel’s sensitive subject matter, this presentation is recommended for adults and teens only.

In support of French Hospital Medical Center’s (FHMC) women’s health programs, the FHMC Foundation is raffling off a pink Venice 150 Lance Scooter from Wilmore Scooter Works. Proceeds from the drawing will help FHMC provide free mammograms to uninsured women in the community who are unable to afford this often times life-saving technology.

Tickets are available for $20 at La French Shoppe, FHMC’s gift shop, located in the main lobby of the hospital, until 4:00pm on Friday November 14. Tickets can also be purchased at Wilmore Scooter Works through Sunday, November 16 when the drawing is held at 4:00 pm. Wilmore Scooter Works located at 1411 Higuera St. in San Luis Obispo. The winner does not need to be present at the drawing, but must be 18 or older, and is responsible for tax and licensing.

This raffle continues FHMC’s long-standing efforts to raise support for women’s health issues, especially breast cancer early detection. At FHMC’s third annual gala, Satin and Stars, held in September, the FHMC Foundation raised nearly $24,000 in free mammograms for local uninsured women. The hospital is also developing its new Women’s Imaging Center with the mission to serve the health care needs of all women, even those unable to afford a mammography screening. It will offer cutting-edge technology for women, like digital mammography and breast MRI, in a comfortable, spa-like atmosphere. Patients will also have access to a Nurse Navigator for guidance and support on the road to health.

For more information on the raffle or to make a donation, call the FHMC Foundation office at 542-6496.

The all-star group of Tony Askew, Judy Nilsen, Ron Robertson, and Dug Uyesaka are joining forces for an exhibit with each artist presenting new work on view at the AFS Gallery. Each is well known for their assemblage work and have different paths to the medium. Tony Askew has been inspiring Santa Barbara artists for over 35 years. He describes his work as “an accidental narrative,” in which the story is left up to the viewer. American folk art has been a major influence for Judy Nilsen. She has selected a quotation from a celebrated source as a starting point for each piece she created for this exhibit, and then combined found materials to interpret its meaning. Ron Robertson has been active in the Santa Barbara art scene for nearly forty years. His surfaces have a distinct texture influenced by his time as a commercial abalone diver, as well as his ten year sojourn in Japan. Dug Uyesaka’s fascination with assemblage can be traced to a boyhood obsession with making things, resulting in a method that could be described as somewhere between scientific and magical.

The San Luis Obispo County Band is celebrating its 134th birthday in 2008. It traces its origins back to the "SLO Military Band", founded in 1874, perhaps a local outgrowth of the popularity of brass bands created during the Civil War. During its 131 years, the Band was affiliated with the Elks Club early in the 1920's, with the American Legion in the 1930's and in the 1940's and 50's donned military khaki as the Veterans of Foreign Wars Band. With the advent of Cuesta College in the 1960's, the Band was offered as a Cuesta College class for several years and is now a part of the educational offerings of the SLO Adult School. The Band is supported also by a grant from the City of San Luis Obispo promotional coordinating funds.

Personnel in the County Band have changed over the years too. For the first 86 years, the Band was made up of only men and boys. It was in 1970 that Mayle Tarwater, a percussionist, joined the Band as its first female member. And in 1985, Henrietta Tognazzini was elected Band President, the first woman to hold the position. Today, men and women of all ages are part of the Band, including several husband-and-wife teams.

Traveling musicians with a carload of instruments is nothing new in the world of folk music, but what if one of those instruments is a Sitar from India or a Renaissance Crumhorn? Going out on a musical limb is common for the group Four Shillings Short. With an ever-increasing array of instruments (over 20 at last count), including hammered dulcimer, mandola & mandolin, tinwhistle &woodwinds, sitar, banjo, percussion and vocals, their music is always varied and captivating. In a single night, Four Shillings Short perform traditional Irish tunes and airs, Indian Ragas, Folk Ballads, Old-Time songs, Medieval & Renaissance instrumentals and a capella numbers as well as contemporary folk and original compositions. Their sound has been described as “wondrously diverse”, “truly refreshing” and “alternative neo-Celtic folk of the first order.”

"The live performances of Four Shillings Short are marked by totally infectious, finger-tapping rhythms and show-stopping a capella pieces... In concert, these two are mostly just pure, unadulterated fun!" Crosswinds, Santa Fe, NM

The San Luis Obispo Children’s Museum will host two amazing local artists during the weekend of November 22-23. Author Pam Copeland and artist Rebecca Brockway will visit with members and guests to share their special talents and love for their art form. Both events are free with admission.

On Saturday, November 22nd at both 11:00am and 12:30pm, SLO’s own children’s book author, Pam Copeland, will read from Just You & Me and Let’s Make Believe. A book signing will follow each reading where 100% of every book sold will benefit the Children's Museum. Pam’s keepsake gift books for grown-ups, and her children's picture books for kids and grandparents, make perfect holiday gifts.

On Sunday, November 23rd, Rebecca Brockway will lead an exciting art workshop at 1:00pm. Guests will explore the art of American Artist Jackson Pollack, and emulate his style by throwing paint on canvas to create the illusion of a volcanic eruption. The finished piece will be put on display at the Museum. Be sure to wear old clothes or an oversized T-shirt to protect your clothes. Rebecca’s work is featured in the Museum’s outdoor playscape.

The mission of the San Luis Obispo Children’s Museum is to inspire learning through play in both children and adults. We provide a rich variety of interactive family-centered informal learning experiences in the arts and sciences. We are currently working on completing the Museum’s first floor exhibits in 2009.     Contact: Lee Gulliver   528-8291   lubcole@aol.com
The holiday season is a time to engage in festive family fun and find a way to give back by assisting the less fortunate. Bringing a bit of both to the Central Coast, Friends of Prado Day Center presents Hope for the Holidays – a one-day fundraising event featuring an auction for 25 fully-decorated Christmas trees that will benefit Prado Day Center. Bringing merriment to the Mission Parish Hall in downtown San Luis Obispo, Hope for the Holidays will take place Saturday, December 6, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The free event – open to the general public and fun for adults and kids alike – is sure to get attendees in the holiday spirit with its spectacular display of Christmas trees in full splendor, carefully decorated by community sponsors. Each tree will offer a unique theme determined by its decorating team, such as Uncork the Holidays by Summerwood Winery, Downtown Delight by SLO Downtown Association and Ringing in the Holidays by Call America.

Visitors can come by to check out the trees, hear live Christmas music, and bid on their favorites. Additional silent auction items, such as gift certificates and special gift baskets, will also be available. Bidders should plan to bring their “sleigh” to safely carry their tree home immediately following the event. All proceeds will directly benefit Prado Day Center, the only daytime service center for the homeless in San Luis Obispo County. Three hundred and sixty-four days of the year, Prado offers homeless men, women and children an opportunity to eat breakfast and lunch, take showers, look for employment, and obtain medical and other services. The center provides a necessary resource for homeless families, especially those with young children, who would otherwise be forced to stay out on the streets or in their cars all day until overnight shelters open.

Please join us in our holiday celebration. For further information, please call Lee Gulliver at 528-8291. Thank you.
