Everybody Loves an Underdog ... Experience the Farmers’ Alliance exhibit opening; watch as the underdog transforms into a hero at the galleries of the SLO County Historical Museum located at 696 Monterey Street. The event will be held from 6pm - 9:00pm, during Art After Dark.
The Farmers Alliance was a national agrarian political and economic movement from the 1890s. In true David and Goliath fashion, local farmers banded together against the oppression of big business. Frustrated by unfair costs of land, milling, and transportation, many North County farmers aligned with Populist Party to start their own economic co-ops. The movement made San Luis Obispo the most militant, Populist county in the state. Many of the Farmers’ Alliance enterprises survived until the mid 1970s.
The Farmers’ Alliance exhibit opening is free to the public, and all are welcomed. In addition, raffle prizes showcasing local vendors will also be available for purchase at the opening. To participate in the raffle, tickets are $5 each or 5 for $20. Winners do not need to be present to claim prizes.

King Corn is a feature documentary about two friends, one acre of corn, and the subsidized crop that drives our fast-food nation. In King Corn, Ian Cheney and Curt Ellis, best friends from college on the east coast, move to the heartland to learn where their food comes from. With the help of friendly neighbors, genetically modified seeds, and powerful herbicides, they plant and grow a bumper crop of America's most-productive, most-subsidized grain on one acre of Iowa soil. But when they try to follow their pile of corn into the food system, what they find raises troubling questions about how we eat-and how we farm.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Film is at 7:00 p.m. Suggested donation is $4.

Women's Leadership in Early Christian Communities
|

|
The public is invited to explore ideas of women’s leadership in early Christian communities with Dr. Karen Jo Torjesen, widely regarded as a leading authority on women in early Christianity. She is the dean of the Claremont Graduate University School of Religion.
Dr. Torjesen’s presentation is titled “Debates over Family Values in Early Christianity.” She writes, “Early Christianity was counter-cultural, challenging Roman religious practices, the morality of favorite forms of entertainment and also Roman family values. Because the household was the foundation of political and economic life, the critique of Roman family values was especially dangerous. The subordination of wives to husbands, the submission of adult children to parents and the obedience of slaves to masters stabilized the social, political and economic order. Consequent leaders in the Christian movement were ambivalent about how far the critique should go. By reading carefully the historical record of early Christianity, the letters of Paul and other leaders, it is possible to recover the debate over the impact of the transformation of rebirth in Christ on Roman family values.”
A brief question and answer period will follow. The public is invited to this thought-provoking lecture and discussion on women in the ancient church – and the role of women in the church today. Dr. Torjesen’s presentation is sponsored by the Commission on the Status and Role of Women (COSROW) of the San Luis Obispo United Methodist Church. It is one of many events celebrating the opening of the new SLOUMC sanctuary and facilities. For information contact: Kathy Lamoree 543-9328 klamoree@sbcglobal.net or visit the church website at

The 2008 “OPENING MINDS” ART SHOW
will be held at the San Luis Obispo Art Center from April 29 to May 11, 2008, with an opening reception from 3 to 6 p.m., Wednesday, April 30. The reception and show are open and free to the public. Over 100 works by local artists will be displayed.
“Opening Minds” was first developed in 1995 to offer people in mental health recovery a way to express themselves and to provide a venue to share art, feelings, thoughts and messages with the general public. The goal remains the same today. TMHA hopes this year to help the community see that people should not be defined in terms of their illness but by their strengths, gifts and by the contributions they make to society.
The San Luis Obispo Art Center is located at 1010 Broad Street on the west end of Mission Plaza.

Organist Jerry Nagano will play the keyboards of the Wonder Morton theatre pipe organ - all the bells and whistles - live!
Jerry Nagano began his musical training at age ten in Los Angeles. From the very beginning, the movies played a major role in his musical life. It was because of attending a silent movie show, accompanied by the Mighty Wurlitzer, that Jerry took an interest in the organ.
After some instruction on electronic keyboards, he had a chance to study with organist Gaylord Carter, the very person who had played for that silent film years before. Through the years, Jerry has been the organist at:
- the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, playing their fabulous Moller Pipe organ;
- the Stanford Theater in Palo Alto, where classic Hollywood is screened nightly with intermissions performed on the Mighty Wurlitzer;
- the famed Ye Olde Pizza Joynt in the Bay Area, home of the 'Wurlitzer in a Pizza Parlor' concept.
In addition to a busy musical life, during the day Jerry is a Computer Systems Engineer for Stanford University.
11am Saturday, May 10th in the Arlington Theatre, 1317 State Street, Santa Barbara. Adult ticket price is $11. Children and students (with ID) are free!

GET ON BOARD WITH NATIONAL TRAIN DAY IN SAN LUIS OBISPO!
Saturday, May 10th, 2008, from Noon to 4 PM at SLO Amtrak Station
Celebrate rail travel on the Central Coast at the National Train Day open house down at the SLO AMTRAK station. With rising gas prices, airline hassles and increasing traffic frustration there has never been a better time to explore train travel and the options it provides.
The celebration will be at the SLO Amtrak station, 1011 Railroad Avenue (at Santa Rosa). Of course, kids have always loved trains, and they might bring along a few grown-ups with them! There’ll be refreshments and tasty snacks on hand as well as cardboard engineers caps, folding paper locomotives, an exhibit of rail photography and a display of scale model trains from the local railroad club. Along with the helpful station agents, a volunteer host will be available to answer questions and help prospective passengers plan trips. Real trains will be arriving and departing at 12:45 PM, 2:00 PM, 3:07PM and 3:43 PM.
Amtrak offers 3 daily trains to and from Los Angeles as well as one to and from the Bay Area and Seattle. Using the comfortable Thruway Bus Connection, there is frequent service to San Jose and Oakland as well as the San Joaquin Valley and Sacramento.
The Amtrak station in SLO is a friendly and welcoming place to begin or end a rail journey, with a relaxed atmosphere and professional staff. Plus, trains are a "greener" way to travel than automobiles or planes. Come on down and listen for the sound of the whistle and the "all aboard." Kids (of all ages) especially love trains, and this is a good chance to put a smile on their faces.

You will hand in your form to let us know who you want further contact with, and we will arrange to get that information to them that night. If they are receptive to your offer, we will pull you aside to chat some more, or provide contact information to both of you.
There will be prizes for participants that received the most votes, and door prizes for participants. Votes will be tallied up that night, and they will be recognized just before the dance.
We will have a period of mingling for everyone after speed dating, and dancing will start when everyone is ready, or by 9 PM. DJ Avery will spin the tunes for us, with his light show and great sound system. He has done other events for us, and we invited him back for this special occasion. Let's have fun!
6:00 PM Check in and start mingling before the event starts.
7:00 PM Speed Dating starts!
8:00 PM Singles mingle and prizes
9:00 PM Dance with DJ Avery
Age groups will be: 21-29

Who: Del Rey in Concert
What: Red Barn Community Music Series
Where: Red Barn at the South Bay Community Park, 2180 Palisades Avenue, Los Osos
When: Saturday, May 10 at 7 PM (6 PM potluck)
Cost: $10 donation at the door
The Red Barn Community Music Series is proud to present the music of blues guitarist Del Rey on Saturday, May 10 at the Red Barn in the South Bay Community Park, Los Osos.
The guitar and ukulele playing of Del Rey combines country blues, stride piano, classic jazz and hillbilly boogie through the sensibility of an autodidact trailor-park esthete. Her live show is full of complex guitar grooves and sly humor.
Del Rey plays concerts world wide, and presents a concert/lecture on women musicians called Women in American Music. She collaborates and tours frequently with Austin guitarist Steve James and she plays ukulele with Ukeshack . Since 2004 she has been collaborating with Maria Mulduar on tributes to Sister Rosetta Tharpe and Johnny Cash, and she is featured on Ms. Muldaur's CD "Sweet Lovin' Old Soul." Del Rey also writes about music for various publications, including Acoustic Guitar.
“Bored with the boys and their bottlenecks and bell brass blues guitars? Then check out Del Rey: she plays acoustic blues, ragtime, sings, tells good stories, plays a metal-bodied resonator guitar, dresses imaginatively, and is not a boy.” --Folk Roots, UK
“Most acoustic blues guitarists wear thin after just a few songs, but the Guitar Queen continues to delight, even after a dozen or more." --Willamette Week, USA
“If you like your blues warm, wise, witty and well-played, give Del Rey a listen.” --Dirty Linen, USA
The Red Barn is located at the South Bay Community Center, next to the skate park in Los Osos on Los Osos Valley Road at the corner of Palisades. The show begins at 7:00 PM, with pot luck supper and pot luck band beginning at 6 PM. No tickets are required but a donation of $10 will be requested at the door.

Eric Taylor brings his incredible lyrics and guitar playing to downtown San Luis Obispo to the first SLOfolks concert in years at the SLO Art Center, 1010 Broad St.
A mesmerizing performer, Taylor has toured extensively in the United States and Europe, playing notable venues such as Club Passim, The Bottom Line, Caffe Lena, The Bluebird Cafe, Eddie's Attic, The Ark, CSPS, Freight & Salvage, Paradiso (Amsterdam), Theatre Kikker (Utrecht), The Real Music Club (Belfast), Hotel du Nord (Paris), Grey's Pub (Brighton), and The Bein Inn (Perth). Festival appearances include Kerrville, Newport Folk Festival, Woody Guthrie Folk Festival, Take Root (The Netherlands), and Roots of Heaven Festival (The Netherlands).
"To say that Eric Taylor is one of the finest writers of our time, would be an understatement," Nanci Griffith says. "If you miss an opportunity to hear Eric Taylor, you have missed a chance to hear a voice I consider the William Faulkner of songwriting in our current time." Griffith has recorded several of Taylor'ssongs, including "Deadwood," "Storms," "Dollar Matinee" and "Ghost in the Music," which they wrote together. Lyle Lovett, who recorded Taylor's "Memphis Midnight/Memphis Morning," and with whom Taylor co-wrote the immensely popular "Fat Babies," compares Taylor's narrative voice to that of Bruce Springsteen. Iain Matthews claims, "Once you become a Taylor fanatic, it gives one immense joy and pride to be able to enlighten others to the man's work."
Tickets ($15) can be reserved at 543-8562, press #0. You can reserve with a credit card, but please bring cash or check to the Art Center, other wise you will be charged a $3 fee.

Community Supported Agriculture, or CSA, brings consumers and farmers together in a relationship of mutual support.
CSA members support a portion of the crops through a season long commitment, prepaying all or part of the cost so Fairview's farmers can purchase seeds and prepare fields in anticipation of the coming harvest.
Every week on Tuesday or Thursday members select their produce from our market style display, arranged under the CSA roof at our farm stand from 1:30 to 6:30 pm.

With Starshine Roshell - a talk followed by Q+A.
Named for a song in the 1960s musical "Hair", in which her father starred, Starshine Roshell is a journalism professor, award-winning magazine writer and overwhelmed mother of two boys. She grew up in Los Angeles and wrote for The Hollywood Reporter before joining the Santa Barbara News-Press in 1995, as a news reporter, theater and music critic and arts editor. Her award-winning column — now syndicated to the Santa Barbara Independent and other papers — waxes sassy on sex, politics, kids, fashion, and everything else a modern gal loves to dish about. She offers a fresh and quirky take on life, from the cult of thong underwear to the availability of the morning-after pill.
Recently appearing in the documentary film "Citizen McCaw", about her former employer, Starshine lives in Santa Barbara with her husband (a comic book publisher) and her two sons.
Presented by the Humanist Society of Santa Barbara, Saturday May 17th, in the Patio Room at Vista del Monte, 3775 Modoc Road (Las Positas exit off 101), Santa Barbara. 2:30pm socializing, 3pm meeting starts. $2 members & students, $5 general donations appreciated.

Cayucos, May 18, 2008 — The world’s first civic service organization, Rotary International, is expanding into Cayucos, CA. The Rotary Club of Cayucos-Seaside will celebrate its Charter, as it joins Rotary’s global network of volunteers in more than 32,000 clubs in nearly 170 countries, to enhance the community of Cayucos, and promote international goodwill through community projects, scholarships, cultural exchanges, and humanitarian projects.
During the club’s first year, the Rotary Club of Cayucos-Seaside will focus on serving youths and seniors in Cayucos. Initiatives to adopt and maintain the Cayucos Beach by the Pier have been approved by the County of San Luis Obispo. Plans are also underway to support the Cayucos School’s literacy, sports and other educational programs. Two other key objectives are to develop a youth center for the community, and collaborate with the local senior center to address seniors’ needs in town.
The Rotary Club of Cayucos-Seaside is also dedicated to Rotary’s commitment to eradicate polio worldwide. Rotary’s largest contribution to global health began in 1985 with PolioPlus, its program to immunize all the world’s children against polio. To date, Rotary has committed more than $500 million and countless volunteer hours through the PolioPlus program to the protection of over two billion children in 122 countries.
Presently, the Rotary Club of Cayucos-Seaside meets at 7 AM every Thursday at the Sea Shanty Restaurant, 296 S. Ocean Avenue, Cayucos. The club’s Charter members represent a cross-section of the community’s business and professional men and women. For more information, please contact Sherry Sim, Club President at (805) 234-4315 or email sherryrotary@sherrysim.com, or visit www.CayucosRotary.org.

A talk by Barbara Katz Rothman
Tuesday, May 20, 2008, 11:10am-12:00 pm, Erhart Ag. Bldg. 10, Rm 220 (Cal Poly)
We tend to think of the miracle of birth as the making of babies. But midwives understand the miracle of birth to be the making of mothers: strong, competent, capable mothers who trust themselves and know their inner strength. How do midwives in non-medicalized settings organize and conduct their practice to reflect these interests?
Barbara Katz Rothman's work is both interdisciplinary and international in scope, focusing on issues in Medical Sociology, Bioethics, and Gender and the Sociology of Knowledge. She received her PhD in Sociology from New York University, and is a faculty member at Baruch College and the Graduate School at the City University of New York.
Co-sponsored by: The Ethnic Studies Department (with additional support from CBF funds), the Biological Sciences Department, the Women's and Gender Studies Department, Women's Programs and Services and the College of Liberal Arts at Cal Poly.

Tuesday, May 20, 2008, 4:10-5:30 pm, Manufacturing Bldg. 36, Rm 106 (Cal Poly)
The much heralded "completion" of the human genome project in the year 2000 raises urgent questions: Do we now have a map of who we are? How will we control the uses of the potentially healing but also likely destructive and highly marketable information genetics brings us? If the history of genetics is one in which scientific knowledge has been used to create and maintain systems of oppression, what role should that history play in our decision making practices about new genetic technologies?
Barbara Katz Rothman's work is both interdisciplinary and international in scope, focusing on issues in Medical Sociology, Bioethics, and Gender and the Sociology of Knowledge. She received her PhD in Sociology from New York University, and is a faculty member at Baruch College and the Graduate School at the City University of New York.

SLOfolks (San Luis Obispo Folk Music Society) is very happy to bring Prince Diabate, "Prince of the Kora" to Castoro Cellars in Templeton, at Highway 46W and Bethel Rd, on Saturday, May 24. tickets $20 at 805-238-0725. The Kora is the melodic instrument of West Africa which makes everyone feel happy. Prince Diabate is from Guinea. When he was eight years old, former Guinean President, Sekou Touré, came to his home town, Kindia, for a celebration in Independence Square. Braving the outraged soldiers and his own fear, the young musician grasped his kora, threw himself at the President's feet and played a special song for him. Greatly touched by his skill and audacity, Sekou Touré became his benefactor, enrolling him into the National Children's Theatre in Conakry. At sixteen years of age, he won first prize in an international kora competition in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, and acquired his nickname.
Prince Diabate recorded his last album in Guinea, Conakry. Entitled, DJERELON, it is arranged and produced by Kante Manfila, longtime collaborator of Salif Keita. The US release date was May 6, 2006. The album won the People's Choice Awards (Vox Populi) in the Independent Music Awards for 2007: World Music (Traditional) category.

One of jazz's brightest young stars will showcase the new generation's approach to jazz at Cal Poly's Jazz Night concert.
Pianist Taylor Eigsti will perform with both Cal Poly's University Jazz Band #1 and the Cal Poly Jazz Combo. University Jazz Band #2 and another jazz combo will also be performing in concert.
Twenty-three-year-old Eigsti, who has received two Grammy Award nominations, began his professional career when he was just eight. At 13, he opened for Dave Brubeck. His breakout recording "Lucky to Be Me" was in the top 15 most-played jazz albums on radio during 2006.
His music is a combination of straight-ahead jazz and very refreshing new directions, said Paul Rinzler, director of jazz studies at Cal Poly and director of the University Jazz Bands. According to allmusic.com, “His style is enthusiastic, straightforward, and swinging, with elements of stride, bop, soul and funk.”
