"Losing Faith in Faith", with Dan Barker, Co-President of the Freedom From Religion Foundation. http://ffrf.org The history of Western civilization shows us that most social and moral progress has been brought about by persons free from religion. In modern times the first to speak out for prison reform; for humane treatment of the mentally ill; for abolition of capital punishment; for women's right to vote; for death with dignity for the terminally ill; and for the right to choose contraception or abortion, have been freethinkers, just as they were the first to call for an end to slavery. FFRF recognizes that the United States was first among nations to adopt a secular Constitution. The founders who wrote the U.S. Constitution wanted citizens to be free to support the church of their choice, or no religion at all. Our Constitution was very purposefully written to be a godless document, whose only references to religion are exclusionary. The Foundation acts on violations of separation of state and church, on behalf of members and the public, including prayers in public schools, or payment of public funds for religious purposes. The Foundation keeps several legal challenges in the courts at all times, and has ended a variety of violations of the First Amendment. Dan Barker will talk about his journey from teenage evangelist, through 17 years in a touring musical ministry, to years of reading that caused him to outgrow his Christian faith; he declared his atheism in 1984. An accomplished musician, fluent in Spanish and other languages, Dan plays solo piano and in jazz combos. Presented by the Humanist Society of Santa Barbara - all are welcome. Socializing 2:30pm, meeting starts 3pm in the Patio Room at Vista del Monte, 3775 Modoc Road (Las Positas exit off 101) in SB. $2 student, $5 general donation requested. They may be singing "Cunla" in Irish, but they will also be delivering "Mairi's Wedding" complete with electric bass solo, and featuring conga drums in their show-stopping "Cape Clear Set."     Paul Galbraith, Scottish-born classical guitarist, is a world-renowned artist known for his unique style of playing. At the age of 17, Galbraith won the Silver Medal at the Segovia International Guitar Competition. Andres Segovia, who was present, called his playing "magnificent". This award helped launch an international career including engagements with some of the finest orchestras in Britain and Europe. His unique playing position, which is similar to that of a cellist, was first revealed at the Edinburgh Festival in 1989. His guitar, which has eight strings, rather than the normal 6, is supported by a metal endpin, similar to that of a cello, that rests on a wooden resonance box. Galbraith, a resident of Brazil, is a founding member of the Brazilian Guitar Quartet. His principal teacher since 1983 has been the Greek conductor, pianist and philosopher George Hadjinikos.
