Come along with the Vocal Arts as they prepare to travel to South American, the land of tango, fiery passions, and rich, romantic music!
After the HUGE success of the first California International Choral Festival last summer and the SOLD OUT Christmas performances in December, the Ensemble is ready to travel to South American, the land of tango, fiery passions, and rich, romantic music! “We wouldn’t miss it!” is the most often repeated phrase for those who have had the pleasure of hearing this world-class choir perform. The beauty of the music will surround you, your family and friends as you listen to the central coast’s premier choir sing music written by composers from Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. Mix in European classics and American folk and you will have a ticket that will make your spirit soar!
And, we have made an exciting new addition! Appearing in each of our concerts is the newly created Vocal Arts Youth Choir composed of members from the ages of 16 to 26. This 50-voice choir will enchant you with its bright, new sound and will join the Vocal Arts Ensemble for some 100-voice pieces that will send shivers up your spine!

The Wildling Art Museum in the sunny Santa Ynez Valley is inviting the public to its Fifth Annual Poetry Reading. This free event will feature poems about nature by four well-known poets from Santa Barbara County: Bettina T. Barrett, Michael Hannon, Lois Klein and Paul J. Willis. The emcee for the afternoon will be Perie Longo, the 2007-09 Poet Laureate of the City of Santa Barbara. A short concert by Lorin Grean, Celtic harpist and vocalist, will precede the poetry reading at 3 p.m. and a wine and cheese reception will follow.
Bettina T. Barrett grew up in Denmark, arriving in the U.S. at age 15. In addition to writing poetry, she is an artist working in clay. Her books include Bear-Star My Name (Fithian, 1989). Sleepdancer (Fithian, 1994), and Heartscape (Mille Grazie Press). She says, “Poems come to me at unexpected moments, or when I feel an intensity of emotion about something.”
Michael Hannon, who lives in Los Osos, California, began writing poems when he was twenty. He has been widely published in journals and anthologies, both in the U.S. and abroad, and is the author of three full-length collections: Poems & Days (Isis Press, 1986), Ordinary Messengers (Floating Island, 1991), and Trusting Oblivion (if publishing, 2002).
Lois Klein is on the faculty of the Santa Barbara Poetry Conference and teaches through California Poets in the Schools. She also organizes the monthly Favorite Poems Project readings at the Blue Agave in Santa Barbara. Her chapbook, Naming Water, came out in 1998 and her new book, A Soldier's Daughter, was published by Turning Point Books in 2008.
Paul J. Willis has taught English at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, CA for the last twenty years. His recent books include Bright Shoots of Everlastingness: Essays on Faith and the American Wild (WordFarm, 2005) and his first full collection of poems, Visiting Home (Pecan Grove Press, 2008). He is a return guest to the Wildling Art Museum’s annual Poetry Reading event.

His research deals with liberalism and multiculturalism. His publications include articles on toleration and illiberal communities, days of rest in divided societies, the issue of national service in Israel, and the rights of 'small' cultures.

SLOfolks brings peace activists/singer/songwriters Kate Power and Steve Einhorn, June 6, to Coalesce Bookstore, 845 Main St, Morro Bay - 7PM - $15 Tickets: (805) 772-2880
Sonnie Brown will interview Kate Power & Steve Einhorn on The Minstrel Song Show on KCBX, Saturday, June 7, between 2 and 4PM
Kate Power & Steve Einhorn are two musicians who have defined folk music in Portland, Oregon over the past 30 years. A rare combination, their music promotes community and romance simultaneously. Unique and original, the songs of Power & Einhorn personify harmony and musicial communion.
"There has been a lot of press about us over the years. Between decades of serving up folk music at Artichoke Music, winning a Grand Prize at Kerrville for a song from a lost boy, community activism like setting the Guinness World Record with the world's largest guitar band singing "This Land is Your Land" to allay hunger in Portland, playing A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor when he came to Oregon with his road show, letters from Pete Seeger letting us know how much he loves our music and getting to share letters and friendship with the real hero of our lives or giving an unknown Zimbabwean boy a great guitar to play after he built his first one out of an oil can, raw wood and stripped bicycle brake cables; there have been a lot of stories to tell. Here are just a few kernals on the ear of corn but this section gives a few bites of the tasty stories from the adventures of Artichoke Folk." About Kate & Steve - News & Media (Jan 16, 2007)
Pete Seeger wrote: " I finally got to listen to your CD 'pearls' . It's wonderful!"
"Hearing Kate & Steve sing is like having two friends in your backyard when it's grown too dark to see but not to lisen and they're singing songs you've loved for years. Then they sing some songs you've never heard and you know you'll want to hear them too, for years to come."

The Dos Pueblos High School Jazz Choir and Combo, who recently returned from a stellar performance at the Reno Jazz Festival, will feature pop-jazz vocal group m-pact at their Benefit Concert, Friday June 6. Considered "one of the best pop-jazz vocal groups in the world" by the San Francisco Chronicle, and heralded as “Polished performers – among THE BEST in the country” by NBC’s The Today Show, m-pact is respected worldwide as a cutting-edge trailblazer in the realm of vocal music. They have performed with pop superstars Sheryl Crow, Boyz II Men, Kenny G, Liza Minnelli, Babyface, Heart's Ann Wilson and Jackson Browne, as well as with jazz legends from Ray Charles, Natalie Cole, Bobby McFerrin, Take 6, and the New York Voices to the Woody Herman Orchestra and the Maynard Ferguson Big Band. Over the last dozen years, their signature sound has been used in both TV themes and animated Disney feature films, and is enjoyed on syndicated radio worldwide. Their sophisticated sound and accessible appeal have garnered vast accolades, including Vocal Group of the Year from the LA Music Awards.
Under the Direction of Brian Slotnick-Lastrico, the Dos Pueblos' Jazz Choir and Combo are considered one of the most skilled jazz groups in the nation at the high school or college level. Invited to perform in some of the most prestigious festivals around the world, they are known for their "big-band style" of vocal jazz with an emphasis on Swing and Be-Bop styles. The Wildling Art Museum’s “Free Friday Flicks” on June 6 features two documentaries screened at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival last year that were produced by local filmmakers. These short films explore the human impact on two very different ecosystems, the Arctic north and South Africa. “Arctic Expedition,” was filmed and produced by Gail Osherenko, a Project Scientist with the Marine Science Institute at UCSB. “Desperate Measures: The Dilemma of the South African Elephant” was produced and filmed by five Santa Barbara high school students. The screenings will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Stacy Hall at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 2901 Nojoqui Street in Los Olivos. A discussion following the screening will be lead by Dr. Osherenko and may include one of the students who produced the film on the elephants.
“Arctic Expedition,” (16 minutes) is an entertaining, family-friendly film, capturing spectacular images of polar bears, walrus, humpback whales, and waterfalls flowing from the polar ice cap, but it addresses the serious issue of global warming caused by human dependence on burning carbon fuels that is melting the sea ice and threatening the survival of the polar bears.
The film “Desperate Measures” ( 22 minutes), is based on a trip the students took to South Africa in the summer of 2006. Their film, which is much less suited to a family audience, explores the several solutions of how to deal with elephant over-population in Kruger National Park from culling, to translocation, to birth control for female elephants and vasectomies for males. It includes interviews with conservationists in South Africa and the U.S., including Rich Block, the Director of the Santa Barbara Zoo and local resident, the actor John Cleese.
The Museum provides free popcorn and cookies, wine, water and soft drinks. The films are underwritten by a grant from the Valley Foundation. For more information: 688-1082 or consult the Museum’s website, www.wildlingmuseum.org

Sonnie Brown will interview Blind Willies on The Minstrel Song Show on KCBX. 9O.1FM, Saturday, June 7, between 2 and 4PM
"If the Devil went down to San Francisco where Blind Willies are located and challenged Annie to a fiddlin' contest it would be no contest because you cannot fiddle like this without divine intervention. Blind Willies prove once again that traditionally styled folk music can sound aggressively modern."

Blind Willies is Annie Staninec, multi-genre fiddler, and Alexei Wajchman, guitarist/singer/songwriter. They met and began playing together at San Francisco School of the Arts.
Annie has been playing bluegrass/old time fiddle for more than a decade. She's also a consummate gypsy jazz violinist. In 2006, she toured with David Grisman and the Gypsy Caravan. The highlight of those performances was a full orchestra playing David Grisman's “Gypsy Medley” from his soundtrack recording for the film, King of the Gypsies. As the featured fiddler, Annie electrified audiences in solos that honored the late Stéphane Grappelli who originally recorded the piece with David. She has also played with Darol Anger, Mike Marshall, Stephane Wrembel, and Crooked Still.
Annie was Djangofest Northwest's 2006 recipient of the Dudley Hill Award for exceptional young artist. In 2008 she was named Fiddler of the Year at the inaugural Northern California Bluegrass Awards.
Alexei grew up in San Francisco's Mission District. After learning to play clarinet and sax, he taught himself to play guitar and began writing songs at 15. He was awarded the Blue Bear Celebrity Scholarship to study guitar and voice in 2002 and 2003, and he was a 2003 California Arts Scholar in sax. His early influences included Nirvana, Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, Velvet Underground, Robert Johnson, Leadbelly, Hank Williams, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors. His music is a soulful mix of folk, country, rock, and blues, and his lyrics are an intimate exploration of America's psycho/social landscapes.

The White Heron Sangha is sponsoring a non-residential weekend workshop retreat in Morro Bay with teacher Leigh Brasington, who will introduce us to the topic of the meditative absorption states, called jhanas, and the relationship between the meditative absorptions and insight (vipassana) practice. Leigh has been practicing meditation since 1985 and is the senior American student of the late Ven. Ayya Khema. There is no limit to the number of people who can register for this retreat, but we are asking that people who register make a commitment to attend all day both Saturday and Sunday, though Friday evening is optional. The cost of the retreat is $50 for the weekend. The cost does not include any payment for the teacher, and each of us will have the opportunity to practice dana (generosity) by making a contribution to help Leigh continue this important work. However, if the cost of this retreat would prevent you from coming, please let us know so other arrangements can be made.
To pre-register, send your check to White Heron Sangha, PO Box 870, Morro Bay, CA 93443-0870. Include your name, address, phone number, email address, and indicate Leigh Brasington in the memo section. We will also accept registrations at the door, though it is preferable to pre-register so that we have some idea of how many people will be coming to the retreat. Bring a mat or cushion if you like to sit on the floor. Chairs will be provided. Bring your own lunch. We will provide tea and cookies and water.

ECo-Film Night: Permaculture: A Quiet Revolution with Award Winning Film Maker Vanessa Schulz
In May 2007, the 8th International Permaculture Convergence (IPC8) www.ipc8.org was held in Brazil, bringing together visionary activists from around the world. New to Permaculture, Vanessa Schulz spent a month in
Brazil attending the conference and later visiting four ground breaking Permaculture Centers, learning permaculture in settings both urban and rural, in the beautiful and varied landscape of Brazil. From the enormous metropolitan city of Sao Paulo, to the Cerrado (savannah) in central Brazil, to the heart of Amazonia, and finally the historic Bahia region, the story of Permaculture is told.
Vanessa will be present at the ECO-Film night, and both Permaculture: A Quiet Revolution and Cost of Freedom will be shown and available for purchase. All dogs enjoy going out three times a day in one of the 6 play yards supervised by kennel staff. Some of the newer runs feature such luxuries as gradient heated flooring, private yards, elevated beds and even closed-circuit Web cameras so owners can keep watch on their pets through the Internet when they are away. Dogs can also enjoy massages, extra playtime or walks, wading pools, playgroups and special treats. In addition a new cat facility opened earlier this year. Located out of sight of the dogs, cats enjoy daily free time outside their large condos in the "Springdale Gardens" playground.

Summer is almost here and our young oak seedlings are getting thirsty! Join Morro Coast Audubon at Sweet Springs Nature Preserve in Los Osos on Saturday, June 14th from 9:00-12:00 to help new plants get established by giving them a much needed drink of water. We also have a number of other jobs that need doing, such as removing invasive weeds, pruning eucalyptus, raking pathways and seed collection. There’s a job for all ages and all levels of fitness. If you only have part of that time available, don’t worry. We’ll find something that takes just that long! Be sure to bring sunscreen and gloves! A hat, long pants, long sleeved shirt, and sturdy shoes are suggested attire.
We’ll provide the Gatorade and munchies to keep you going, as well as lots of camaraderie. Help make this preserve even more wondrous than it already is by helping us restore the native flora. Call Holly at 239-3928 for more info! Or just meet us at the Preserve entrance on Ramona Drive, between Broderson and 4th Street in Los Osos. Hope to see you there!

• Cats are very clean; they bathe themselves!
• Indoor cats and spayed/neutered cats live longer lives, providing up to 20 years of companionship
• Lots of cats need good homes; when you adopt one, you’re saving a life!
Woods Humane Society prides itself on being a premier animal care facility and every adoptable feline is spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and micro-chipped prior to going home.
If you are looking to bring a loving new companion feline into your life, please consider stopping by Woods Humane Society and spend some time getting to know all of the truly wonderful adult cats who are desperately seeking a home to call their own!

Many of us are aware that the “Longevity Revolution”
has added 30 years to the average life span. Although some
of us are involved in our local community and enjoy times with
family and friends, there may remain a question: What would add quality and purpose to
my older years? We will explore the topic of how to insure our longer lives will
be richer and more meaningful at an all day workshop led by three stimulating
professional presenters.

MEETING THE POPE: CLERGY ABUSE SURVIVOR TO SPEAK IN SANTA BARBARA
Olan Horne to Discuss His Interview with Benedict XVI
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Olan Horne was one of six survivors of clergy sexual abuse who met privately with Pope Benedict XVI on his recent trip to the United States in April. For him it was an inspired encounter. On June 20 and 21 he will be in Santa Barbara to discuss this event in his talk, “Benedict XVI and the Crisis of Clergy Abuse: The Question of Change in the Catholic Church.” Mr. Horne will address the impact this meeting will have on future dialogue with the Church leadership and the practice of restorative work as a tool for justice and healing.
A founding member of Boston’s victim support group, The Survivors of Joseph Birmingham, Mr. Horne was an instrumental force in the 2003 settlement process between victims and the Archdiocese of Boston.
Benedict XVI’s meeting with Mr. Horne and the other survivors was an event that stirred emotions and provoked responses ranging from anger and cynicism to excitement and optimism. For Mr. Horne, who would often say, ‘I’m from Missouri--show me,’ his encounter with the Pope left him with restored hope. “There's a great new bell that has been rung, as far as I'm concerned,” he said. “And I'm hearing something that I have never heard.”
Olan Horne’s talks are jointly sponsored by SafeNet, the Survivors Alliance and Franciscan Exchange Network, and the Franciscan Office of Pastoral Outreach. SafeNet is a volunteer group of clergy abuse survivors of the Franciscan Province of St. Barbara focusing on restorative and reconciliation issues. The Franciscan Office of Pastoral Outreach advocates for and assists clergy abuse survivors, family members, and affected communities. The event is also co-sponsored by the UC Santa Barbara Law and Society Program, the UC Santa Barbara Women’s Center, and the Santa Barbara Rape Crisis Center. Both talks are free to the public.

LA vocalist Judy Wexler, will be performing with the Mike Raynor Group on Friday, June 20th at the Inn at Morro Bay, from 7:30pm to 10:30pm. For more information go to www.CityNightsJazz.com
From Louis Armstrong to Dexter Gordon, Miles Davis to Pat Metheny, jazz artists have always sought to tell stories. And Judy Wexler, admired for her warm voice and nuanced approach to melody and lyrics, is a natural storyteller. She is also "one of the most focused, unpretentious, no-nonsense, bop-oriented jazz singers around," according to Harvey Siders in JazzTimes, with "a big, appealing voice and a healthy sense of swing," wrote Alex Henderson in All Music Guide. Her 2005 debut, Easy On The Heart, made radio waves and introduced her to a wide jazz audience; now comes the follow-up, Dreams & Shadows, confirming her ability to find great songs and effortlessly bring them to life. www.judywexler.com
Germein Linares, All About Jazz
“Her assertive, no-frills delivery is a dominant and pleasant feature in her singing, as it focuses our attention on the clear and lucid storytelling. The extras in her style are subtle, delicate, well-timed, purposeful and a testament to her good taste…she clearly knows what liberties to take, what lines to stretch and, more importantly, how to enchant us fully."
Scott Yanow, Jazziz

Santa Barbara Families Protest Hospital Ban on
Vaginal Birth After Cesarean (VBAC)
June 23rd Rally Highlights Plight of Cesarean Mothers
Rally from 11am to 2pm in front of main entrance of Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital
Santa Barbara, CA, June 23, 2008 – Dozens of parents and concerned community members, supported by the Birth Action Coalition and the International Cesarean Awareness Network (ICAN), will rally outside Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara on June 23rd at 11 a.m. against the hospital's refusal to allow them a natural birth. Women in Santa Barbara County who have previously given birth by cesarean section have been banned since 2003 from choosing a vaginal birth at Cottage Hospital. This policy is part of a growing national trend. Rally supporters will gather to raise awareness about the VBAC ban and to request that it be reversed.
"Families in our community want better birth options for all women. We are saddened by Cottage Hospital's decision to close the Goleta Valley Birthing Center, which was one of only 40 hospitals in the country to receive the World Health Organization's "Baby Friendly" designation. And for five years now, women with a prior cesarean have been facing a choice between a forced repeat cesarean, or traveling great distances while in labor to give birth at facilities that still allow VBAC," said Jessica Barton, the Santa Barbara coordinator of the Birth Action Coalition.
VBAC is a safe and desirable option for many woman. With a vaginal delivery, most women spend less time in the hospital and are backn their feet more quickly to care for their new baby and older children. For some women, having a baby vaginally is more emotionally satisfying than having a cesarean. Mom can hold her baby sooner, and bonding and breastfeeding often get off to an easier start. Some families wish to avoid the health risks that may be incurred with a cesarean.

Whether you are interested in photography, natural history, hiking, or just harbor a sense of wonder that any living thing grows as tall as the grand trees found in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, you will find a captivating exhibit, in the Lompoc Public Library’s Grossman Gallery throughout June. *Open during regular library hours*
Santa Barbara based artist Jeff Jones, who has decades of experience in remote backcountry and wilderness areas, captures the range of landscapes found in California’s southern Sierra Nevada in a series of large-scale and beautifully detailed panoramic photographs. The technically innovative photography is enhanced by an environmental education component written by author and naturalist William Tweed. The result is a stunning documentation of the largest continuous wilderness area in California.
Both Tweed and Jones will present an introduction to the exhibit on Sunday, June 1st at 2pm in the Grossman Gallery, located at the Lompoc Library, 501 East North Avenue. The joint presentation is sponsored by the Lompoc District Libraries Foundation with support from Union Bank and the Lompoc chapter, Arguello Group of the Sierra Club.

AMS Entertainment will present Dawn Lambeth and the Usonia Jazz Band with special guest guitarist Paul Mehling at the June installation of their summer concert series at Vina Robles Winery.
Dawn and the Usonia Jazz Band will evoke Paris in the 1930's when they are joined by guitarist Paul Mehling, leader of the Hot Club of San Francisco. Paul founded the Hot Club over 16 years ago; in 2000 the band had the distinction of being the first American Gypsy-Swing band to play onstage at the Django Reinhardt festival in Samois-sur-Seine, France. By taking the musical styles he grew up with and his passion for jazz manouche, Paul has created a sound that owes as much to 52nd Street small group swing as it does to jazz manouche.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m., concert begins at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $20 per person, $17 Signature Club. A light picnic dinner is available for purchase. For reservations or more information, please call 805.369.0140. Don't miss this singular evening of hot 1930's Django Reinhardt inspired jazz and swing.

Trent Tobin, a well known figure in the SLO construction industry, died quite suddenly and unexpectedly of pancreatic cancer/kidney failure. It has left a huge hole in many lives, but none more so than the lives of the Tobin women. Trent was the provider and main care-giver for his family. His wife Judy has suffered and survived two bouts with cancer, fighting it still. When Trent died, there was no life insurance, yet sometimes the way a person lives insures something anyway. As his friends and as a community, we are coming together to insure that something will be done to help. We are having a Casino Night Benefit at the Holland Ranch on June 28th, 2008. Tickets for this event are $40.00 and available by calling Jaime Strand (459-9222) or purchasing them at Monterey Espresso next to Boo Boo records in SLO. A ticket includes food, 2 drinks, and 100 markers for the casino tables. There will be live and silent auctions for amazing items. All money raised will be placed in a fund to help meet some of the pressing needs as Judy continues to battle cancer. Come help us support a family to face the difficulty of being left without financial support, and together be the kind of community insures a life well lived is not forgotten.
