7:30 PM  -  9:30 PM ''Gag The Whistleblower'', a free film screening
    Contact: Andrew   805-564-5608   green_helmet@hotmail.com
The actual title of this documentary film is "Kill The Messenger", however Sibel Edmonds is - very fortunately - still alive. Soon after 9/11/2001, Sibel Edmonds was a translator of Middle-Eastern languages for the FBI, when she was solicited by a co-worker to join a ring of spies and arms dealers. She reported the strange and inappropriate proposal to her supervisors, who did nothing. She reported what was going on to FBI bosses, who fired her despite federal whistleblower protections. Next, Sibel went to two US Senators in Washington, on the Senate Intelligence Committee, who confirmed what she was saying, then she and everyone else involved were slapped with gag-orders by the Ashcroft Justice Department, on the grounds of "National Security". Since then, Sibel Edmonds has become "the most gagged person in US history", forbidden from talking about her case, even in court hearings to try and get her job back. This powerful, 84-minute film, made in France in 2006, exposes the Bush-Cheney administration all the way back to before 9/11. Most of the dialog is in English, with subtitles for only a few short sections. In the Faulkner Gallery, Central Public Library, 40 East Anapamu Street in downtown Santa Barbara, this film screening is free, however donations would be greatly appreciated to pay for the room rental, which goes back into your community library system.

8:30 PM  -  11:00 PM James Lee Stanley Concert
    Contact: Steve Key   805-204-6821   steve@stevekey.com
James Lee Stanley -- a versatile entertainer who has shared stages with comedians Steven Wright, Bill Cosby and Robin Williams, as well as musicians Bonnie Raitt, Robin Trower and Chick Corea -- returns to San Luis Obispo on Friday July 11 for a concert at The Clubhouse, 740 W. Foothill Blvd. Tickets are $15 for the 8:30pm show. All ages are welcome. A true renaissance man, James Lee Stanley was born in Philadelphia, PA, and has been recording and performing since he was fourteen. He has toured consistently since he returned from the USAF (as a Chinese linguist) and has performed up to three hundred dates a year. His recording career spans four decades -- nineteen CDs including collaborations with Peter Tork of the Monkees, novelist Tom Robbins ("Even Cowgirls Gets the Blues") and backup from Timothy B. Schmidt of the Eagles and Paul Barerre of Little Feat. Stanley's remarkable ability as a vocalist and composer allow him to create truly great songs, each accompanied by his amazing guitar orchestrations. When you couple with his outrageously hilarious repartee, you get one of the most entertaining concerts on the circuit. Last year in Atascadero, Stanley shared concert billing with John Batdorf, who collaborated with him on the recording, "All Wood and Stones", featuring acoustic versions of Rolling Stones classics such as "Satisfaction", "Ruby Tuesday" and "Last Time". His work over decades has covered many styles, but he's found a near death experience has shifted his current work "toward an exploration of the impermanence of life, and yet, a search for the kindness and peace within each fleeting moment." "My images used to capture the beauty of a landscape, a dancer, or even just a cloud, but currently they reflect the landscape textured in a multi-layered transformation, the dancer as a wisp of smoke, and the cloud as the eye of the divine." Kabe Russell's work is also included in the Gallery's current exhibit, "12 Photographers in 12 Weeks," featuring the extraordinary images of twelve Central Coast fine art photographers. B-W Gallery is dedicated to the art and craft of black and white photography and we are honored to have their work in the gallery.     It’s almost time for the annual Obon Festival, a Japanese celebration of the culture’s foods, arts, and traditions. Central to the Obon Festival is the Bon Odori, a traditional dance done specifically for the festival. The slow, methodical dance involves participants wearing colorful kimonos, yutaka or happi coats performing coordinated steps and arm movements to the calculated beat of the taiko drums. To participate in the Bon Odori, organizers of the festival are offering dance lessons for six weeks preceding the festival. The classes begin on Thursday, June 12th, at the Veteran’s Memorial Cultural Center, 313 W. Tunnel St in Santa Maria. The classes will take place from 6:30pm to 8:00pm.

Dates are as follows:
Thursday July 17th

Both the festival and the dance classes are free and open to the public.

LOS OSOS, CA- Local artist Shane Stoneman is set to perform with an all-star cast of central coast musicians for the CD release of his new album, Days Gone By, at the Sweet Springs Saloon on Friday, July 18th, 2008. Recorded in April 2008, Days Gone By is a follow up to Stoneman's debut album, Sea Songs and Nightbirds. While his first recording was an album that illustrated the trials and tribulations of making a living as an artist on the central coast, the new record aims to capture a snapshot of the whole spectrum of life. Inspired by fatherhood and the American dream, Shane’s new songs create a colorful world filled with youthful nostalgia, chain smoking, nicotine addicted grandmothers, and old record players. The live show at Sweet Springs Saloon, 990 Los Osos Valley Road, Los Osos, will star Dylan Johnson from Functus on bass, Zak Cornejo from Criticinue on drums, and the man known simply as “Toes” from Resination on keyboards. Johnson, notorious for his funky baselines, will also sing back up vocals along with the sparkly soprano of Amy Cruz. “They are freaky-good players that have always inspired me when I've seen their bands play,” said Stoneman. “I just feel really lucky to play with these friends and want people to hear what we’ve created over the last couple of months. It’s a cool mixture… almost like a Sly and the Family Stone meets Neil Young.” After chasing a professional surfing career across the world during the 90’s, Stoneman went to Cal Poly San Louis Obispo in pursuit of a formal education. Stoneman studied English literature and deepened his love for music and art. Today, he resides in Los Osos, Ca, with his family of three. Considered a renaissance man of the central coast, Stoneman's work is ubiquitous. His oil paintings of the coast have showed locally and most recently exhibited at the Jean LaRae gallery in Laguna Beach. His hand crafted surfboards are his bread and butter. They can be seen on display at Wavelengths, MB.

"The Power Of The Sun", a 56-minute educational film about the history, technology and future of solar power, narrated by John Cleese. Following the screening will be Q+A with UCSB Professor Walter Kohn, winner of the 1998 Nobel Prize for Chemistry and featured in the film. More important than ever in this era of rising fuel prices, photovoltaic cells generating electricity from sunlight can realistically be expected to produce as much as 25% of the world's energy in the next 30 years. New developments and materials highlighted in the film show how rising output, improved conversion efficiency and lower costs of modern solar cells are powering the developing world, off the grid. In contrast, industrialized nations have become dependent on previously cheap fossil fuels, while parking lots stand vacant and rooftops remain bare instead of being covered with solar cells, which would provide shade and deliver energy from sunshine. This film is entertainingly informative for students, energy consumers and public policy makers about solar energy, so it can again power homes and businesses. 2:30pm socializing, 3pm meeting starts, all are welcome. $2 student or $5 general donations would be appreciated. In the Patio Room at Vista del Monte, 3775 Modoc Road (Las Positas exit off 101) in Santa Barbara. Details of the movie and maps to the meeting location are on the website.

The book is both entertaining and understandable to the non-lawyer, while presenting an accurate and thorough explanation of the laws governing bicycles and bicycling. All cyclists face the daily hazards of commuting in traffic, overenthusiastic dogs, road hazards, traffic codes, harassment, road rage, bicycle theft, group rides, and property damage. This book addresses everyday issues we all deal with. Find out what you need to know about your cycling rights and hear some great stories about riding with Lance and the exciting life of a pro cyclist. Tickets are $50 per person for the general public, $40 for Coalition members and Criterium racers. Baka Beyond, the band renowed for its intoxicating brew of Celtic, Gaelic and West African music, has established a worldwide reputation over the decade or more since it released its influential Spirit of the Forest album. (They have sold over a quarter of a million cd's). Band members. from Brittany, Cameroon, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Ghana as well as Britain, blend rhythms and melodies of Africa with Celtic traditions old and new. "It was the amazing bird-like singing or yelli that first attracted me," says Su Hart, Baka Beyond's lead singer. "The women get together before the dawn to sing, enchant the animals of the forest and ensure that the men's hunting will be successful. Song and dance are used by the Baka for healing, for rituals, for keeping the community together and also for pure fun! We try to do the same in Baka Beyond." The Baka Pygmies of Cameroon are an indigenous people from southeast Cameroon, and their musicality, creativity and culture are a constant reference point for the band, providing the perfect context in which to bring music from different cultures together. Over the years of visiting and making music with the Baka in Africa, Baka Beyond has ensured that it gives back to the source of its inspiration.

Teriyaki chicken dinner, sushi, beef sticks (kushiyaki), udon, won ton and strawberry shortcake are among the foods available for purchase. Come early, food for purchase is limited!

The Obon Festival can be traced to a Buddhist sutra that tells the story of Mogallana, a disciple of Budda who, in meditation, saw his deceased mother suffering in the realm of hungry ghosts. He tried giving her food but it turned into flames. Buddha advised him to engage in a “jishi”, or retreat, and make an offering for his fellow monks. This done, he saw his mother released from suffering and he danced for joy. Varying interpretations evolved over the years, including the belief that spirits of ancestors actually revisit this world. Pine torches are attached to bamboo to welcome spirits to the family home, and on the final day of the observance, spirits are said to return to the nether world, guided by candle-lit lanterns that are set adrift on water. Obon remains one of the most important Buddhist observances. The typical Obon is a blend of somber reflection and celebration of those before us. Adults and children…come, enjoy and be happy!

Successful nonprofits today see that solutions of the past won't work in the long-run, so in an effort to help nonprofits prepare themselves for the many aspects of fund development the Nonprofit Support Center (NSC) and Cal Poly Continuing Educations & University Outreach have teamed up to offer a Fund Development Officers Certificated Program, a three-course series that will cover issues like creating a fund development plan, donor cultivation, annual giving and planned giving, building your grant writing team as well as developing a capital campaign. The information session is free and will be held at the Community Cornerstone for Nonprofits, 120 E. Jones in Santa Maria. Registration and the information session are open to anyone.

The Wildling Art Museum will present a lecture by Michael Tobias, Ph.D., who is also the President of the Dancing Star Foundation. The lecture will address the current global prospects for safe-guarding precious habitat and species, both in the United States and the rest of the world. Drawing upon his own field research in nearly eighty countries, over a period of forty years, Michael's unique blend of persistently tapping into the last unexplored parts of the planet, the natural sciences, and the arts, will bring to this special lecture/discussion a wide-ranging look at those places where conservation biology and animal protection are working, from Suriname and Peru to Namibia and Yemen; from the Antarctic to parts of the Persian Golf; from Borneo, Japan and Bhutan, to India, and regions across Europe and the United States. Focusing on key players, governments, NGOs and individuals, Dr. Tobias will examine remarkable strategies for large ecosystem protection that are both carbon neutral driven, but also happen to be common sense applications of prudent, sustainable ethics for all involved. Tobias' unique approach to both animal rights and conservation are a major boost to the whole discussion of endangered species, and what it will take to save that which we are all equally connected to: the Earth. Tobias and Jane Morrison, his co-author (and wife, and the Executive Vice President of Dancing Star Foundation) will sign copies of their latest coffee table book, "Sanctuary-Global Oases of Innocence." With a forward by the Queen of the Bhutan, the book is being officially launched at the Smithsonian Institution in late June 2008 and looks at 24 of the last great vestiges of Eden on Earth, and what it will take to keep them protected.     Nashville songwriter Buddy Mondlock -- whose songs have been recorded by Garth Brooks, Joan Baez, Art Garfunkel and many others -- will be in concert at Shpeherd's Table, 151 N. 7th St. in Grover Beach. Local award-winning songwriter Loren Radis is the opening act. Tickets are $15. The Chicago native was first recorded by David Wilcox in 1987, who included Buddy's song "The Kid" on his A & M Records debut. Peter, Paul & Mary also recorded "The Kid" and invited Buddy to sing it with them on a "Great Performances" TV Special. Art Garfunkel collaborated with Buddy and Maia Sharp for a CD and tour that also included "The Kid". Folksingers such as Janis Ian, Nanci Griffth and Guy Clark have also recorded Buddy Mondlock songs. Buddy became a well-known performer on the folk festival and coffeehouse circuit, headlining at Texas' Kerrville Folk Festival, touring across the U.S. and Europe. His new album, “The Edge of the World,” is his most personal recording to date. The song cycle is an introspective journey from childhood through to the recent breakup of a marriage and beyond. And while always a wry observer of the social interactions of human beings, the song “Big Fish, Shallow Water” takes on a political edge as well.
