    Contact: Wendy-Marie Foerster   781-3889 x10   wendymarie@slolittletheatre.org
San Luis Obispo Little Theatre presents Lend Me a Tenor Written by Ken Ludwig and directed by Gailee Walker January 11 – February 3, 2008 Fri/Sat nights at 8pm, Sat/Sun matinees at 2pm $20 regular, $17 student/senior 888 Morro St., SLO For more information, call 781-3889 x12 It’s September of 1934, and tonight is the biggest night in the history of the Cleveland Grand Opera Company. Famous tenor Tito Morelli, better known in the opera world as “Il Stupendo,” is slated to perform his greatest role ever, Otello, at the season opening gala. This night is sure to put Cleveland on the operatic map, but a zany series of mishaps makes it impossible for Il Stupendo to perform. After all, he is dead, or so we think! Knowing that this would be mean certain doom, the opera house manager convinces his reluctant assistant, Max, an aspiring singer, to put on Morelli’s costume and makeup and try to fool the audience into thinking he is Il Stupendo. Max sings brilliantly and is a hit with the audience, but the fun is just beginning. Morelli comes to during the performance, puts on his spare costume and makeup, thinking he is to perform, and arrives at the theatre just as the opera is ending. Now we have two Otellos running around, with two lovely admirers chasing them in lingerie, each thinking they are with the opera legend. Add in the hysterical opera and hotel staff, lots of doors to open, close, or hide behind, and you’ve got a night of laughter that might make you cry! "Non stop laughter." Variety. "Uproarious! Hysterical!" USA Today. "A rib tickling comedy." N.Y. Post. "Screamingly funny!" CBS Radio.

Chuck Brodsky will be at Coalesce Bookstore in Morro Bay at 845 Main Street, Tickets are $15 (805)772-2880. Chuck Brodsky's songwriting pokes fun at political corruption, the disappearance of "small town life" and mischief he made as a kid. The Rolling Stone says of him, “[Chuck] reflects the good old U.S. of A., warts and all... colorful tales...reminds us there's a whole wide world outside our doors." He's best known for his tunes about the unsung heroes of baseball. His song "Radio" was included in the film adaptation of the story of the mute, developmentally disabled man who was "adopted" by a southern high school where he was valued as an integral part of their community for 40 years. Brodsky's storytelling is top-notch, he knows that the best stories are the little things in the lives of everyday people trying to muddle through with some grace. His great gift as a writer is to infuse these stories with humanity and humor, making them resonate profoundly with his listeners. He's appeared on nationally syndicated radio programs “Mountain Stage,” “Acoustic Cafe,” and “River City Folk,” and has performed three concerts of his celebrated baseball story songs at the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

7:30 PM Música Del Río House Concerts Presents Acoustic Eidolon
    Contact: Fred Munroe   466-6941   fmunroe@kcbx.net
Fate usually comes with no strings attached, but for Joe and Hannah, known as Acoustic Eidolon, it came with 18 strings and a love that has grown along with their music. A cello in the hands of Hannah Alkire and a double-neck guitjo in the hands of Joe Scott have together created a blending of Celtic, folk and world music which is most intriguing and delightful to listen to. Two remarkable and unusual musicians came together when Hannah was sent to a studio recording assignment at the home of the greatest double-neck guitjo player in the world. (Ok, the only double-neck guitjo player in the world.)

Three years later Joe called Hannah with some ridiculous ploy of an interest in hearing the sounds of her cello and the guitjo together. Her mother probably warned her about guys like this, to no avail. She agreed and over the next 3 years an unusual musical sound was born, a business partnership and friendship grew, and their love for their collaboration of music and each other became Acoustic Eidolon. And, oh yes, they are now married. Hannah did not listen to her mother.

But we get to listen to both of them at Música Del Río. From house concerts such as ours and venues as diverse as St. Paul’s Cathedral and The Royal National Theatre in London, to the Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas and the Vancouver Island Music Festival; Acoustic Eidolon has created their own style without letting go of the musical heritage they share. There is such a magical timbre to their combined sounds. This is an orchestra of two. And our only regret is that this orchestra will not fill the air at Música Del Río until next year.

You can learn and hear more about Acoustic Eidolon at www.acousticeidolon.com.

You can hear their music and amusing stories in our living room on January 26. Please join us if you can.

    Contact: Steve Key   773-3104   steve@stevekey.com
Southern storytelling songwriter Claire Holley and local folk-bluegrass duo Erin Inglish & Joe Ridout will share billing on Sunday, Jan. 27, at Linnaea's Café, 1110 Garden St., San Luis Obispo. Tickets are $10 for the 7pm concert, available at the door. For more info: www.linnaeas.com Claire Holley was born and raised in Mississippi, eagerly subject to the Deep South's rich variety of musical influence--from flattop pickers to honkytonk crooners and gospel choirs, from opera divas to her grandmother's jazz piano. In college she started performing in coffeehouses and writing songs, releasing her first record, Night Air, soon after graduating. In 1999, she made Sanctuary, an inspired recording of traditional hymns. Soon after, Holley signed with Yep Roc Records, and Performing Songwriter called her Yep Roc debut "straightforward, unabashed, and beautiful." NPR's Weekend Edition with Liane Hansen featured this release as well as Sanctuary. Her most recent release, Dandelion has received radio play in the U.S. and Europe. Recently, one of Claire’s songs aired on ABC’s “Men in Trees,” and she was nominated by the LA Weekly Theatre Awards for Best Original Music for the songs she wrote for “See Rock City,” a play which premiered in Los Angeles last fall. Erin Inglish, who bought a banjo on her way out the door to college, grew up in a musical family on the country side of the Central Coast. She graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering from UC Berkeley this winter. Her songs are influenced by her life in California and by her field work in sustainable technologies and health education in India and Madagascar. Formerly trained as an opera singer, Erin's musical realm has shifted to include Americana roots, folk, bluegrass, old-time, and blues. Flat-picking master Joe Ridout is a songwriter native to the Bay Area. Joe and Erin began playing together in Fall 2006, and recorded their first CD titled Hoi Polloi ("The Common Folk").

7:00 PM Public Lecture on Fair Division
    Contact: Erika Rogers   805-550-9781   erogers@calpoly.edu
How does one fairly divide disputed territories, estates, votes, and cakes? Cal Poly Research Scholar in Residence, Ted Hill, will address those questions during his talk “Getting a Fair Share”. Dr. Hill’s talk, aimed for a lay scientific audience, will highlight several mathematical devices developed in the last 50 years that offer elegant, practical, and often surprisingly simple solutions to fair-division problems that occur on a daily basis. A Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at the Georgia Institute of Technology, he has published extensively in the areas of probability theory and fair-division.

For more information about the event, contact Cal Poly’s Research and Graduate Programs office at 756-1508.

This lecture is scheduled for TUESDAY, JANUARY 29th, at 7 p.m., in Room 510-B of the Kennedy Library on the Cal Poly campus.

On January 31st, 2008 Cal Poly will participate in the largest teach-in in America's history, Focus the Nation: Global Warming Solutions for America. As Focus the Nation is being held at Cal Poly, similar events will be held simultaneously at over one thousand other universities across the country. The purpose of Focus the Nation is to spark a national discussion about climate change solutions. The event has been planned to take place directly before presidential primary elections in order to make climate change a key issue during the race for the presidency. At Cal Poly, the day-long teach-in will feature presentations and panel discussions by two dozen faculty and staff experts in various fields including physics, biology, architecture, engineering, agriculture, business, economics, psychology and religious studies. All are open to the public free of charge. Focus the Nation will conclude with a workshop on the public policy issues associated with climate change solutions. The workshop will feature a non- partisan examination of the 2008 Presidential candidates' plans for climate change solutions from Cal Poly Political Science professors. It will culminate with keynote speeches from Congresswoman Lois Capps and State Assemblyman Sam Blakeslee during which students will have the opportunity to engage with visiting local, state, and federal representatives. Additional Focus the Nation events include a Green Job Fair and Trade Show, an art display and installation and a dinner for university officials and elected officials.
