Orcutt Mineral Society is pleased to announce our 41st Annual Gem and Mineral Show to be held August 1-3 at Saint Joseph’s Church, 298 S. Thompson Avenue, Nipomo, CA. Hours are 10-5 daily. The show features many activities to please the whole family, and it is free!
Over 30 displays will show off the various interests of our members and guests, several demonstrators will instruct in a variety of the lapidary arts, including glass bead making, cabochon making, and wire-wrapping, and over 50 inside and outside dealers will offer a large variety of materials related to the lapidary arts, and a Country Store will offer an eclectic variety of previously owned items for the bargain hunter. The “Treasure Chest” gives participants the chance to win a variety of lapidary related prizes, including the top prize of $100. Inside the main show building, a well-stocked snack bar will offer sandwiches, drinks, cake and pie, and Saturday night the Society hosts a fantastic Santa Maria Style Barbecue that has received rave reviews from those who have attended it. A highlight of the barbecue in addition to the succulent beef is the fresh roasted sweet corn.
Orcutt Mineral Society (OMS) is a non-profit corporation that uses monies earned at the annual show (from dealer space rental, food service, Country Store and Treasure Chest activities) to benefit the community. Our public service activities include bi-monthly highway clean-up, donations to Santa Barbara County Health Services for abused children, a canned-food drive for the area’s homeless, educational talks in local public schools, and annual scholarships at Alan Hancock and Cuesta Colleges.
The show is easily accessible via Thompson Avenue off the 101 Freeway, either from San Luis Obispo to the north, or Santa Maria to the south. Admission is FREE! For further information, call 805-481-3495 or 805-929-3788.

Sponsored by the Central Coast Pet Emergency Clinic 1558 W. Branch Dr. Arroyo Grande
In an effort to meet the ever-increasing demand for blood, CCPEC is hosting a blood drive to benefit both pets and their human companions.
The Paws for the Cause Blood Drive is Saturday 8-2-08 from 11-3pm in the K-Mart shopping center in Arroyo Grande.
Our goal on the human side of the drive is to stock up on as much blood as possible to help our community. On the pet side, the goal is to find donors to help other animals survive surgery, trauma and disease. Please do not bring your pets; we will talk to you there about needs, requirements and protocols for animal blood donation and to see if your pet is right for our program.
Appointments are appreciated (call 489-6573) but walk ins are welcome too!
Any questions should be directed to Erin at the Central Coast Pet Emergency Clinic.

B-W Gallery - Artist's Reception for photographer Don Eaton - Sunday August 3rd

On Sunday, August 3rd, B-W Gallery will host an informal reception for fine art photographer Don Eaton from 2-4 p.m. This is a free event and the public is cordially invited.
During his 36-year career as a Naval Officer, Don Eaton devoted much of his free time to photography as he traveled worldwide. His pursuit of Black and White photography began as a means to do Black and White ink drawings, but his fascination with the photos themselves took hold and he never looked back.
Eaton was a Navy flyer and as an A6 Intruder Bombardier/Navigator he flew 66 combat missions in Viet Nam. He was shot down on his 10th mission - after evasion and rescue, he flew 56 more. As his Naval career progressed, his free time became more limited, but he managed to enter and win prizes in photo contests and art shows, had his work published in Naval Institute Proceedings, and did limited commercial work. He ended his career in the Navy as a Rear Admiral when he was Assistant Commander for Logistics and Fleet Support at the Naval Air Systems Command in Washington, D.C.
He retired following a term as Senior Lecturer at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey and now resides in Paso Robles where he continues to pursue his passion for black and white photography through digital capture and processing.
Don Eaton's work is also included in the Gallery's current exhibit, "12 Photographers in 12 Weeks," featuring the extraordinary images of twelve Central Coast fine art photographers. B-W Gallery is dedicated to the art and craft of black and white photography and we are honored to have their work in the gallery. B-W Gallery is located at 9315 Santa Clara Road, Atascadero, CA 93422. Please call 805-674-0337 or visit our web site (www.b-wgallery.com) for directions and a schedule of events for this current exhibit

Bring your children or grandchildren to this botanically-themed day camp and participate in daily crafts and build a green garden project.

Participants will be involved in installing the Oak Woodland landscape plan for the botanical Garden Education Center and will learn about straw bale construction. From these skills, straw bale benches will be constructed that will be placed under the canopy of Coast Live Oaks for a “kid’s circle.” Kids will create “texture tiles” in clay using found materials.
Daily snacks are provided.

From epic sets on highland pipes and fiddle, to angelic folk songs over bouzouki and mandola, to ripping sets of Irish jigs and reels, the lads of Molly's Revenge have expanded their range on their seventh release, "The Western Shore." For this stunning album they enlisted the help of award-winning vocalist and accordionist Moira Smiley, who will be appearing at this show.
“The Western Shore” was produced by John Doyle, a founding member of Irish supergroup Solas. Guest performers include percussionist Fraser Stone (Old Blind Dogs), John Doyle, and Moira Smiley. International release to retail outlets is set for September 16.
Molly’s Revenge recently joined forces with vocalist and accordion player Moira Smiley, an accomplished performer in many styles who has won the Western USA division of the All-Ireland Singing Championships. She travels the world as a performer and teacher in early and traditional music and creates new work in the fields of dance, theater, and film. She has appeared as a member of the Eastern European ensembles KITKA and VIDA, served as Musical Director for Shakespeare Santa Cruz, was National Harmony Sweepstakes champion with her band VOCO, and has many other credits to her name.

On SATURDAY August 9th, from 2 to 4 p.m., B-W Gallery is honored to host an informal reception (free event) for fine art photographer Nixson Borah.
The range of art that Nixson Borah has produced and exhibited covers a wide spectrum of media, including drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture and photography. His work has been shown in numerous galleries and museums and is included in private collections on both coasts. The human figure has been a primary subject, and a love of modern dance led him to concentrate on dance photography in Los Angeles in the late 1980s and early 90s. Since then he has been creating digital composites of his drawings and photographs. Retired from a career in southern California as a teacher of drawing and printmaking at Fullerton College, he now lives in Atascadero.
Nixson Borah's work is also included in the Gallery's current exhibit, "12 Photographers in 12 Weeks," featuring the extraordinary images of twelve Central Coast fine art photographers. B-W Gallery is dedicated to the art and craft of black and white photography and we are honored to have their work in the gallery. What's funny about war, poverty, ignorance, bigotry, neo-conservatism, homophobia, greed, lust and fear? Ask Roy Zimmerman. He's been writing satirical songs for twenty years.
The Bay Area-based performer will give a concert at the The Clubhouse in San Luis Obispo on Saturday, Aug. 9, 8:30pm. Cover charge is $15. All ages are welcome.
The Los Angeles Times says, "Zimmerman displays a lacerating wit and keen awareness of society's foibles that bring to mind a latter-day Tom Lehrer." Tom Lehrer himself says, "I congratulate Roy Zimmerman on reintroducing literacy to comedy songs."
Performing at New York City's Symphony Space during the 2004 Republican Convention, he drew this review from the New York Times: "Roy Zimmerman lifted the evening with his song 'Chickenhawk,' ridiculing the military policies of Bush administration officials who didn't serve in the armed forces. Zimmerman's squawking and clucking conveyed his scorn with contagious irreverence."
Zimmerman founded and wrote all the material for the comedy folk quartet The Foremen, who recorded four albums, two of them for Warner/Reprise Records.

As part of the Arroyo Grande Village Summer Concert Series, SLOfolks will sponsor SLIGO RAGS with opener STEVE KEY for a free concert in the bandstand off of Branch Street.
Sligo Rags is a Celtic-oriented ensemble comprised of accomplished and versatile musicians that perform Celtic Folk with a decidedly bluegrass attitude. The band is a two-time winner of the Orange County Music Award for Best Folk Band. Using fiddle, acoustic guitar, electric bass, and percussion, Sligo Rags is taking the California Celtic music scene by storm. Their debut studio recording, "The Night Before the Morning After", currently garnering international airplay, was called "the best I've heard from a stateside band" by Celtic Beat Magazine. Says the San Diego Troubadour, "This band can light up an atmosphere as dim as the Guinness stout you just ordered at the bar...Sligo Rags really knows their Celtic music." Don't be surprised if elements of country, gypsy jazz and swing manage to sneak their way into the act as well. Bob Stane, the legendary founder of The Icehouse and The Coffee Gallery Backstage says of Sligo Rags, "this is a money back, no questions asked if you are not thrilled act. Bring friends. Dynamic, up tempo, multi-talented. A fusion that just crackles." The group’s name is a tribute to the Celtic anthem "The Irish Rover," whose third verse begins "We had one million bags of the best Sligo Rags."
Show opener Steve Key is an award-winning songwriter, performer and recording artist. Steve wrote "Record Time (33, 45, 78)" recorded by country star Kathy Mattea in 1992, and by the Nashville duo Hometown News on their 2005 CD. Dozens of folk, country, blues and pop artists have recorded and performed Steve Key songs.

Greenwich Village folksinger Rod MacDonald in concert

|
A major figure in the Greenwich Village folk music scene, songwriter Rod MacDonald is on tour, stopping off at The Clubhouse in SLO to play the featured set on the weekly songwriters showcase.
His signature song, "American Jerusalem", "a brilliant contrast of rich and poor, of the powerful and the powerless in Manhattan..." (Sing Out! magazine) remains an enduring classic.
More than two dozen recording artists have covered his songs. Influenced by songwriters Phil Ochs, Richard Farina and Bob Dylan, Rod is not afraid to get political, take chances and ask tough questions. All Music Guide writes that Rod is "... one of the most politically and socially aware lyricists of our time."
The Clubhouse showcase is hosted by Steve Key, an ex-New Yorker who counts Rod MacDonald as one of his major inspirations as a songwriter. The showcase will include guest performances by local and touring artists, such as Jackie Morris from Carpenteria, and LA-based songwriters Steve Noonan (a songwriting mentor to his high school buddy, Jackson Browne) and Michael Ray.
There is no cover charge, except a pass of the tip bucket for our featured act. All ages are welcome. The Clubhouse is at 740 W. Foothill Blvd. in San Luis Obispo. 805-548-8500, www.theclubhousereport.com

Jay D. Glass, Ph.D. will talk about the basis of human behavior. He has published books with provocative titles and subject matter:
"Soldiers of God: Primal Emotions and Religious Terrorists", examines the human motivations that can so bend a person's mind as to make them give up their lives and/or kill for their concept of God. From the anti-anxiety effects of faith; to the religious maskings and sanctioned cravings of violent, rapacious, homicidal behaviors; to wanting to be somebody that motivates human beings to their core. "Soldiers Of God" is a harsh yet insightful look at the workings of disturbed human minds.
"The Power of Faith: Mother Nature's Gift", with an introduction by Jane Goodall. Glass probes the theory that belief in God is a valuable tool for the human species' individual and collective survival, and thus part of Mother Nature's programmed design. Chapters compare and contrast animal instincts to human thoughts, and focus special interest on understanding why and how belief in God can ultimately turn destructive.
Jay Glass received a dual Ph.D in neurobiology and psychology from the Center for Brain Research at the University of Rochester, NY. From 1972-1981 he was on the faculty of the School of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, PA. In 1981 he obtained an EMBA and career-changed to venture capital, specializing in medical technology companies. Now retired, he writes about the evolutionary origins of human behavior, and works for wilderness and species conservation.
2:30pm socializing, 3pm meeting starts in the Patio Room at Vista del Monte, 3775 Modoc Road (Las Positas exit off 101), midway between UCSB & SBCC, Santa Barbara. Presented by the Humanist Society of Santa Barbara, our website has maps to the meeting location and free parking. $2 student or $5 general donations would be appreciated.

SLO Art Center Offers Accredited Sculpture Workshop
Award-winning sculptor, DJ Garrity will lead a fascinating exploration of the art of stone sculpture at the San Luis Obispo Art Center from August 21-24, 2008.
The artist who served three tours of duty as Sculptor-In-Residence of Mount Rushmore National Memorial, has established an international reputation with artists, architects and educators who have enjoyed his innovative workshop. “The workshop has been especially popular with the gardening community around the country. The classical association between the art of gardening and the aesthetics of stone have drawn many participants. Individuals with an interest in the college credits or artists with a desire to
add three-dimensional sculpture to their body of work have rounded out quite a few of the classes” according to Garrity.
No experience is required to participate in “The Rhythms of Stone Workshop” and students of all ages have joined in the light approach, which the artist brings to the art of stone sculpture. The workshop is fully accredited for undergraduate, graduate and professional development credits. Garrity will be leading workshops in 2008 at the Chicago Botanical Garden, The Oregon Botanical Garden, The Society of the Four Arts in Palm Beach and at Blithewold Mansion & Gardens of Newport, Rhode Island. Class size will be limited to 12 and students can register for the workshop by contacting Karen Kile, Executive Director of San Luis Obispo Art Center at (805) 543-8562 and visit www.djgarrity.com.

Texas-based husband-wife duo Tom Prasada-Rao and Cary Cooper are The Dreamsicles, award-winning songwriters and folk festival headliners. They make a rare stop on the Central Coast with a concert at Shepherd's Table, 151 N. 7th St. (one block off Grand, next to Shirley's Diner), Grover Beach.
Nathan McEuen, a brilliant guitarist and inventive songwriter, plays an opening set.
Tom and Cary draw on their experience in classical violin, musical theater, raising kids, and living in the third world to create songs which navigate the territory between Everything But The Girl and Leonard Cohen, Lucy Kaplansky and Krishna Das.
"Cleverly-worded pop confections that swiftly live up to the pair's billing"--Washington Post
"This pop-folk-funk duo has it all sewed up baby, and damn is it fine."--Sing Out!
Tom and Cary fell in love in the spring of 2002. They started writing songs together almost immediately, songs that describe the roller coaster ride of finding love again later in life. They set out to create something different, not for 13 year olds with allowance money, but for parents with mortgages and divorces. Soon their songs started developing a certain motif; celebrating the experience, the fear, the sexuality, and the longing of those who have actually been around the block.

The San Luis Obispo Early Warning System sirens will be tested on Saturday, August 23, 2008. The sirens will sound at 12 noon and again at 12:30. Each test will last 3 to 5 minutes. This is just a test and does not require any action on your part.
The sirens are designed to prompt you to go indoors, turn your radio or television to a local station and listen for emergency information. They can be used to alert you to any local major emergency.
During the siren tests, local stations will be conducting normal programming. When at sea, tune to Marine Channel 16.
Additional information about the sirens can be found in the current San Luis Obispo County AT&T phone book's Customer Guide section on page A32.

|
Atascadero, CA - The 2nd annual Evening for Education will take place on August 23, 2008 at the charming Fleur de Lis Estate in Atascadero. This annual event is brought to you by C.A.P.S. (Committee in Support of Atascadero Public Schools), a grassroots non-profit organization that was formed in the spring of 2007. C.A.P.S. is a dedicated committee of volunteers focused on providing grants to support educational enrichment programs for all Atascadero public schools through ongoing fund raising and donations. C.A.P.S. is an affiliate of the Atascadero Community Link.
C.A.P.S. is excited to announce the generous donation of $25,000 in matching funds by the Orfalea Fund of Santa Barbara to support C.A.P.S grant program. The Orfalea Fund has a long history of supporting educational initiatives, including scholarships and child development programs in Santa Barbara, Ventura and San Luis Obispo Counties.
Through the success of its inaugural event, "Twilight in Tuscany", C.A.P.S. was able to award over $72,000 in grants to Atascadero teachers. The success of this and future events would not be possible without the generous support of our caring and involved community. With the current state budget crisis, the Atascadero Unified School District is facing a loss of nearly one million dollars in funding.
There are wonderful “Top Drawer” sponsorship opportunities to showcase your business at this year’s event on August 23rd. If you would like to be a sponsor of this year's event, donate an item for our auction or to get more information about "Discovering New Worlds" with us, please visit our web site at www.supportatascaderopublicschools.org Tickets for the event sold before August 8th are $65 for individuals or $600 for a table of 10 guests. After August 8th, the price will be $70 for individuals and $650 for a table. For an invitation to the event please email us at info@supportatascaderoschools.org

Over a musical career that spans four decades, David Olney has built a reputation as a performing songwriter with a sharp literary mind that cuts to the bone of the human condition. Olney’s cinematic style and fearless approach to lyric writing have won him a reputation as a kind of musical outlaw.
“When Carolyn Wonderland blisters the guitar and cocks her head fetchingly to sing her songs like “I’m Innocent,” she stands in the good company of Sue Foley, Debbie Davies, and Bonnie Raitt. But when she whistles, as she does with disarming ease on another of her compositions “I’m the Man,” or picks up the trumpet, she’s one of a kind.” -Margaret Moser, Austin Chronicle

Biodiversity Hotspots: A Conversation with Permaculturist Gabriel Howearth

Humans have been more actively changing the earth's
ecosystems in the last 50 years than any time in human history, resulting in a huge loss of biological diversity. Global hotspots have been identified as the most biologically vulnerable places on the planet. Thirty-five of these most biolgically valuable locations from Peru, to Easter Island, Madagascar, New Zealand, Brazil and the United States have been highlighted by a team of scientists from the the
organization of Conservation International.
Kowing humans have initiated this crisis, how can we step back from a destructive path and instead secure and create a sustainable future for the Earth and it's species? Can individuals play a part, help change this course even in Santa Barbara and our own backyards, become our own protected Biodiversity Hotspot?
We are pleased to offer an opportunity for an evening of sharing and conversation with Gabriel Howearth, co-founder of Seeds of Change, the foremost GMO free organic seed bank company in the world. Joining him will be Dr. Adam Green, assistant professor of Biology and Director of the Santa Barbara City College Center for Sustainability
(http://sustainability.sbcc.edu), and Dr. Robert Bruegel, founder of OlaBrisa Eco-village development(www.OlaBrisa.com) in southern Baja California.
Buena Fortuna, the botanical gardens of Gabriel Howearth, are a case study in the creation of biodiversity. Located in the desert of Southern Baja California, Howearth tends more than 4,000 different native and introduced plant species that co-exist on nearly 10 acres. The entire Baja peninsula has only approximately 2,700 plant species. The 4,000-plus species under Howearth's care make an astounding vision that steadily expands as he adds more species.
Gabriel Howearth is a Botanist, Landscape Architect and Seedsman. He is the founder of Buena Fortuna Botanical Garden, located in Baja Mexico (3700 plant species of the tropical and dry tropical regions).

Socotran Archipelago lecture

On August 28, 2008, at 7 pm a free dynamic slide show and talk will be presented on the natural features, flora and fauna of the Socotra Archipelago.
Noted botanist, Dylan Hannon, Curator of Conservatory Collections Huntington Botanical Gardens, will give a slide show about the remote and fascinating Socotran Archipelago. Hannon puts a special emphasis on plants and also the people who have lived there for perhaps more than 2000 years. The event is sponsored by the Botanical Garden and will be held at the Garden’s Oak Glen Pavilion, located in El Chorro Regional Park.
The Socotran Archipelago has such a unique assemblage of animal and plant species that it has been described as an Arabian Eden. For a rather small, xeric island, Socotra has a remarkable level of endemism (about 32%) in its plants and many endemic reptiles, invertebrates and birds besides. Some classic plants from Socotra include the dragon tree (Dracaena cinnabari), bottle trees (Adenium), the eccentric cucumber tree (Dendrosicyos) and the only other species of pomegranate, Punica protopunica. Geographically and politically remote, the islands have been difficult of access until recently. In ancient times it was called the Isle of Bliss and its biological significance is matched by its natural beauty.
Socotra is considered the "jewel" of biodiversity in the Arabian sea. The long geological isolation of the Socotra archipelago and its fierce heat and drought have combined to create a unique and spectacular endemic flora. Botanists rank the flora of Socotra among the ten most endangered island floras in the world. The archipelago is a site of global importance for biodiversity conservation.
The lecture is free but donations are welcome. For more information, people can call the SLO Botanical Garden at 805/541-1400 x 300.

From the moment they formed, Highway 101 presented a new approach to country music. The group’s blend of country roots and tradition with rock ‘n roll energy helped catapult the country genre forward, tapping a whole new audience and paving the way for such mass appeal artists as Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson and Tim McGraw. Highway 101 has produced numerous number one hits such as “Somewhere Tonight,” “Cry, Cry, Cry” and “(Do You Love Me) Just Say Yes” and received Grammy Award nominations for “Album of the Year” and “Single of the Year.” To this day, the band’s belief in the music remains their vision while they focus on the quality of their live performances. Highway 101 never tries to pretend to be anything but what they are – a band that loves to play! Tickets range form $25-$40 and are available by calling 805-489-9444 or visiting www.clarkcenter.org.
