   7:30 PM  -  10:30 PM Carmen Opera
Contact: Performing Arts Center Box Office   (805) 756-2787   propera@sbcglobal.net
Pacific Repertory Opera Presents Carmen! April 4 & 5, 7:30 pm, Performing Arts Center, San Luis Obispo Pacific Repertory Opera presents the world renowned Opera Carmen on Friday and Saturday, April 4 and 5 at 7:30 pm at the Performing Arts Center, San Luis Obispo. This passionate opera features familiar music, romance, betrayal and destruction. Carmen is the story of obsessive love – the spirited gypsy Carmen entices Don Jose away from his childhood sweetheart, Micaela. Don Jose risks all to be with Carmen, but his world crumbles into an obsessive jealousy. The ever-rebellious Carmen rushes headlong to her fate, while his passion leads to murder and disgrace. The title role of Carmen is played by contralto Edith Dowd, a regular performer with the New York City Opera. Carmen will be directed by Tanya Kane-Parry of Los Angeles. Her staging includes stark colors to provide a minimalist style and keep the focus on the story itself; the drama and the descent toward impending doom. "Carmen is one of the greatest operas ever. Both the music and the story have so much power, beauty and pain. For those new to the opera, many will realize that they are actually already familiar with the music, as many of the songs have been repeatedly used in films, TV, ads and more," said Director Kane-Parry. "The icon that is the title character, Carmen, has become a cultural symbol of unbridled passion. She represents and continues to resonate as a woman who refuses to be controlled, domesticated or the possession of anyone." The opera is presented in the original French, with English supertitles. Tickets are $22, $38, $48, $60 with student tickets half price with with valid ID. For more information, please call the Opera office at (805) 541-5369, or visit www.propera.org. Order tickets through the PAC Box Office at (805) 756-2787 or toll free (888) 233-ARTS or online at www.pacslo.org

Contact: Trish and Michael   688-6707   crazymiles@earthlink.net
The Santa Ynez Film Group in association with Dream Out Loud Film Production Company invites you to, Angels in the Dust, a breathtaking documentary of hope and healing in the face of staggering crisis in South Africa. President, Founder, and director, Louise Hogarth, is dedicated to the creation of media projects that touch hearts, change attitudes, and foster positive change. She has been featured on CNN with Anderson Cooper, won an Academy Award for The Panama Deception, best feature length documentary in 1994. She travels around the country debuting Angels in the Dust worldwide. In a rare event for the SYFG Louise Hogarth has agreed to attend for a Q/A immediately following the screening. Featured at the SBFF (Santa Barbara FIlm Festival), Angels in the Dust tells the inspiring story of Marion Cloete, who-with her husband and three daughters fearlessly walked away form a privileged life in wealthy Johannesburg suburb to build Botshabelo, an extraordinary village and school that provides shelter, food, and education to more than 550 South African children. The Cloete family demonstrate courage, tolerance, forgiveness, and a love of humanity rarely seen. Hogarth, cast a public eye on the children's most private moments. Audience members are spellbound by the resilient spirit of these children. You will laugh and cry. Your heart will crack open as you witness their journey to recovery. When Hogarth discovered the following statistic; by the year 2010 there will be 26 million orphans due to aids, she created the "DO UBUNTU" (do unto other as you would have them do unto you) bracelet campaign. Beautiful bracelets handmade by women in South Africa living with aids in which 100% of the proceeds goes directly to orphaned children for food, education, and shelter. It is her intention for these bracelets to become the next Lance Armstrong bracelet, a symbol of hope. We will be selling the bracelets at the screening.     Feeding Your Demons: Ancient Wisdom for Resolving Inner Conflict We all have our “demons” fear, anxiety, depression, anger, addictions, and illnesses. Within the ancient teachings of Tibetan Buddhism there is a meditation for facing and liberating these demons which block us from awakening. The traditional Tibetan practice called Chöd (meaning to sever)allows us to free ourselves from the battle within. Tsultrim Allione, a highly trained Western Buddhist teacher and former Tibetan Buddhist nun, will present the revolutionary approach as a practical method to move from inner and outer struggle to non-duality. Drawing from ancient teachings, Feeding Your Demons: Ancient Wisdom for Resolving Inner Conflict, reveals a five-step process to help you meet and release your own demons, transforming them into allies. This special appearance by Tsultrim Allione is sponsored by the Santa Barbara Vairotsana Foundation. Tsultrim will be on hand afterward for a book signing.

A southerner at heart, Rebecca was actually born in Massachusetts, but raised in West Virginia and Charlotte, North Carolina. She played the violin at age four, piano at six, and choose flute at age 11. After developing her exceptional talent in Youth Symphonies, Gospel Churches, and Appalachian folk music sessions, Rebecca pursued a bachelor's degree at the prestigious Indiana University School of Music. A big fan of commitment, she entered IU as a Classical Flute and Environmental Science Major, and emerged with degrees in Jazz and Spanish. Rebecca is a fearless traveler and has steeped her ears in corners of the world ranging from Jazz clubs in NYC to Flamenco gatherings in Spain, pubs in Ireland to European symphony halls, and music festivals in California to dance parades in Brazil. She brings these diverse elements together in her musical life, naturally bouncing from Jazz to Brazilian music, Flamenco, Tango, Classical Music and dabbling in Indian and Celtic music.

Let’s give Nature a helping hand! Join Morro Coast Audubon on Saturday, April 12th from 9:00-12:00 for a Sweet Springs Restoration Party. If you only have part of that time available - not to worry - we’ll find you a job that takes just that long. The tasks we are going to focus on are as follows:

1) Removing veldt grass near the entrance area
2) Removing eucalyptus debris from the willows near the overlook
3) Trimming up a fallen eucalyptus near the overlook
4) Removing radish, mustard and bull thistle near the boardwalk

You’ll probably want to wear a hat, long pants, a long sleeved shirt, and sturdy shoes. You’ll also need sunscreen and gloves. If you have a trowel, shovel, or loppers, those will come in handy for these jobs, but we have plenty of tools as well. Much of the work can also be done by hand. We will have water and munchies to keep you going, as well as lots of camaraderie, and of course some of the most scenic working conditions you could ever hope for. This is a great way to get exercise, make new friends, help our community and learn about our local environment all at the same time. Call Holly at 239-3928 for more info! Or just meet us at the Preserve entrance on Ramona Drive, between Broderson and 4th Street, in Los Osos.

8:30 PM  -  11:00 PM Mandolin master Kenny Blackwell & Guitar wizard Dorian Michael in Concert
    Contact: Steve Key   805-773-3104   steve@stevekey.com
Two of Central Coast's top instrumentalists -- Kenny Blackwell and Dorian Michael -- are featured in concert at The Clubhouse in San Luis Obispo on Saturday, April 12. Show begins at 8:30pm, cover charge is $15. All ages are welcome. The Clubhouse is at This Old House, 740 W. Foothill Blvd. (near Los Osos Valley Road), SLO, 805-548-8500. Dinner menu and full bar service available during the show. Mandolinist Kenny Blackwell studied with Jethro Burns before moving to California where he joined fiddler Richard Green's band in '93. His mandolin and guitar work have been heard in TV and movie scores. Since '94, he has been a constant member of the famed Laurel Canyon Ramblers. Guitarist Dorian Michael has played in about every style and in every type of work situation a blue collar musician could hope for. After years of honky-tonk electric guitar followed by concentrating on solo fingerstyle guitar this project is a whole new challenge. After Kenny and Dorian met by chance in a music store in San Luis Obispo, then at a backyard jam session, and again at a music convention in Los Angeles, they decided it was time to play some music together. Kenny, one of California's foremost mandolinists, wanted a chance to play outside of the bluegrass genre in which he is constantly in demand. Guitarist Dorian Michael was looking for a skillfull musician who understood a wide variety of roots music. Six months later their first CD was released and they were touring as a duo. The duo's diverse backgrounds are the wellspring for a performance of exciting and heartfelt music. Their enthusiasm for making music and their respect for their audience is plainly evident whenever they perform. Says Dorian, "Some music makes you feel deeply, some music makes you think and some tunes are played just for the sheer fun of it. We like to try to get to all those places in the space of a concert."

“One Winter Story”- Channelkeeper film & music night 6:30 pm Friday April 18th at the Marjorie Luke Theatre in Santa Barbara. Tickets are $12, and sales at door begin at 6 (cash/check only please). Call for advance tickets. Live music by Omar Cowan and Jason Campbell & the Drive will proceed the film. Join Santa Barbara Channelkeeper for a special screening of the award-winning film "One Winter Story", a unique documentary about Sarah Gerhardt, the first woman to tow-in surf the outer reefs of Hawaii and to surf Maverick’s. The award-winning film, made by Hawaii filmmaker Sally Lundburg and San Francisco filmmaker Elizabeth Pepin, is a personal documentary that follows Sarah as she learns to surf big waves with her mentor, Ken Bradshaw, becoming the first woman in the world to tow-in surf, and eventually to Maverick's. “One Winter Story” is an unprecedented glimpse into the male-dominated world of big-wave surfing from an unusual and seldom seen perspective - a woman’s. The surfing footage is an awesome sight but the fine, intensely immediate rendering of Sarah's experience is this unforgettable film's real reward. “One Winter Story” traces Sarah's strength and determination to their roots in a beautiful montage of film, voice, memory and emotion. The filmmakers will be on hand to introduce their film and give a special Q&A session afterwards. Live music by Omar Cowan and Jason Campbell & the Drive and a raffle will proceed the film. Tickets are $12 and will be available at the door beginning at 6 pm or by calling Channelkeeper at 563-3377.

7:00 PM  -  9:00 PM Athena Tergis and John Doyle at Red Barn
    Contact: Jonas Richardson/Stuart Mason   528-4530   stu@helmintoller.com
The Red Barn Community Music Series is proud to present the music of Athena Tergis and John Doyle on Friday, April 18 at the Red Barn in the South Bay Community Park, Los Osos. Celebrating the release of "A Letter Home" on Compass Records, this dynamic duo make their West Coast premier as a two piece. Masterfully produced by John Doyle, "A Letter Home" brings together a beautifully diverse selection of Irish and Scottish tunes featuring some of Athena's favorite musicians, including Sharon Shannon, Billy McComiskey, Natalie Hass, John Doyle and others. While deeply rooted in the Irish tradition, Athena brings a flair and energy to her music all her own, perfectly complimented by the signature driving rhythm and ingenious harmony of John Doyle. Among her many accomplishments, Athena includes the Broadway production of Riverdance, where she starred for over a year. Impossibly in demand in the studio and on the road, John Doyle is one of the most sought after guitarists in Irish music today. Immensely talented and blessed with an acute ear, a wicked sense of rhythm and a seemingly endless bag of tricks in his playing, composing, performing and producing, John has solidly established himself as one of the most versatile figures in folk and traditional Irish music. He has worked with some of the top artists in folk music today including Kate Rusby, Linda Thompson, Tim O'Brien, Alison Brown, Liz Carroll, Seamus Egan, Eileen Ivers, Mick Moloney, Cathal McConnell, Karan Casey, and many others. Hailed as a contender for album of the year by the Irish Edition, his latest album "Wayward Son" (Compass Records) firmly established John as a powerful singer and performer in his own right. The Red Barn is located in the South Bay Community Park, next to the skate park in Los Osos on Los Osos Valley Road at the corner of Palisades. The show begins at 7:00 PM, with pot luck supper and pot luck band beginning at 6 PM. No tickets are required but a donation of $10 will be requested

"Clash of Christianities," a talk followed by Q+A with Dr. Tom Mates of UCSB.

Tom Mates maintains a long-standing interest in religion, after recognizing his own lack of faith as a teenager in New York state. This followed baptism and confirmation into the Episcopal Church. Concerned about the increasing influence of the Religious Right in American politics, he began in the 1990s to read scripture and philosophy, also interviewing clergy about their beliefs.

Around 2000, he began writing about religion and has been published in "The Humanist" and "Free Inquiry" magazines, and in the "Santa Barbara Independent." Tom Mates is a materials scientist and polymer chemist, receiving his Bachelor's degree from Alfred University in New York, Master's degree from MIT and Ph.D from Cornell University. He worked for IBM Development for several years, then joined the UC Santa Barbara technical staff in December 1997. Tom now manages two materials analysis laboratories at UCSB.

Presented by the Humanist Society of Santa Barbara, in the Patio Room at Vista del Monte, 3775 Modoc Road (Las Positas exit off 101), SB. $2 student, $5 general donation appreciated. 2:30pm socializing, 3pm meeting starts. Website has maps to the meeting location and free parking.

Three Cal Poly music ensembles featuring 100 of Cal Poly’s finest student musicians will perform at this year’s Open House Concert. The Cal Poly Symphony, University Jazz Band and Cal Poly Wind Ensemble will be performing in the show, titled "The Stage! The Screen! The Ballet!"

The Cal Poly Symphony, conducted by David Arrivée, will perform selections from one of Sergei Prokofiev's most popular and enduring works, the ballet "Romeo and Juliet." This masterpiece for full symphony orchestra includes "The Dance of the Knights," "Madrigal," "Masks," and "Romeo at the Grave of Juliet."

During the University Jazz Band’s segment of the concert, a 1940s Looney Tunes cartoon -- with music from the composition “Powerhouse” -- will be screened, followed by the band’s live performance of the piece. The music is the most famous piece by quirky jazz composer Raymond Scott, who wrote many jazz compositions for cartoons throughout the ’40s and ’50s. The University Jazz Band, directed Cal Poly Director of Jazz Studies Paul Rinzler, will also play several other selections from the rich tradition of jazz in film and television.

The Cal Poly Wind Ensemble will feature organist Paul Woodring performing on the Forbes Pipe Organ selections from Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Phantom of the Opera" and Jaromir Weinberger’s “Polka and Fugue for Wind Ensemble and Organ." The Cal Poly Wind Ensemble is conducted by William Johnson and Christopher Woodruff.

The concert will conclude with Johan Wagenaar’s new work for winds and percussion, "Taming of the Shrew."

The public is invited to visit the campus for Open House and stay late to enjoy an evening of live entertainment.     I Love A Piano is a nostalgic musical journey spanning seven decades of American history as seen through the eyes of Irving Berlin – a man whom Jerome Kern described by saying “Irving Berlin has no place in American music…He is American Music!” Using 64 of Berlin’s enduring and popular favorites, this spectacular new show captures the spirit of America from the Ragtime rhythms of the early 20th century through the swinging sophistication of the 1920s and 30s. From the sentimental songs that inspired a nation during two World Wars to the innocent optimism of the 1950’s, Berlin’s timeless classics, such as “White Christmas,” “God Bless America,” “Puttin’ on the Ritz,” and “There’s No Business Like Show Business,” do more than define the music of a generation, they define the music of our country. Tickets range from $35-$45 and are available by calling the Clark Center Box Office at 805-489-9444 or visiting www.clarkcenter.org.

7:00 PM  -  10:00 PM David Olney in Concert
    Contact: Steve Key   805.544.9663   steve@stevekey.com
Storytelling songwriter David Olney -- whose songs have been covered by Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, Del McCoury, Lonnie Brooks and many others -- will be in concert on Friday, April 25, at the San Luis Obispo Library. The HopeDance-sponsored show begins at 8:00pm. A $15 donation is suggested. The library is located at the corner of Osos and Palm Streets in downtown San Luis Obispo. Whether the subject matter is heartbreak or armed robbery, Olney's cinematic style and fearless approach to lyric writing have won him a reputation as a kind of musical outlaw. Listening to his new CD, One Tough Town, is like watching a Sergio Leone western: it's gritty, smart and dangerous and you can't take your eyes off the screen. The New York Times notes: "Writing from the point of view of historical characters has become one of Mr. Olney's most distinguishing talents, whether he's singing from the mind of a donkey that carried Jesus or imagining Jesse James' last bragging words before being shot by Robert Ford..." Olney's first taste of show biz success came in 1975 when he fronted the band the X-Rays and began performing in clubs around Nashville. By 1978 they were one of the hottest bands on Nashville's alternative music scene, winning a slot on Austin City Limits, opening for Elvis Costello & the Attractions, and landing a deal with Rounder Records. Later Olney signed as a solo artist with the Rounder/Philo label, releasing six critically acclaimed albums by 1999, followed by Omar's Blues in 2000 on the Dead Reckoning label. According to late Olney friend and fan Townes Van Zandt, "Anytime anyone asks me who my favorite music writers are, I say Mozart, Lightnin' Hopkins, Bob Dylan and Dave Olney. Dave Olney is one of the best songwriters I've ever heard — and that's true. I mean that from my heart." More info at the artist website: www.davidolney.com , or call HopeDance at 805.544.9663

    Contact: Elisabeth Demongeot    (805) 528-8963   slofolksmusic@sbcglobal.net
Boulder Acoustic Society will play Castoro Cellars in Templeton, Hwy 46W and Bethel Rd, just off 101.Tickets are $15, available at (805)238-0725. This Colorado quartet plays an amazing variety of songs and instruments. When they performed at Coalesce Bookstore in 2006, the audience responded with great enthusiasm to their zany mix of classical and creative styles. We had never seen anyone play a ukelele as though it was a classical guitar. Kailin Fong's vocal take on jazz standards was refreshing. Don't miss this unusual mix of ragtime, Ukelele and blues.

"Genesis Ian" is an up-and-coming musical artist who writes, performs, and records all his own music. He is on an independant label called Paper Rock Records, under Flipmode Ent. There's no real classification for his style; it's a mix between rock, funk, r&b and pop. All i can say is check him out, his sound is hot. And the girls in his band are equally hot! He's playing the Velvet Jones 4/26/08 on State St. in Santa Barbara. Be there, it's going to be mad fun!!
