Norwegian classical pianist Knut Erik Jensen will present an evening of Grieg's life and music combining piano recital with spoken words. The concert will be held at Mt. Carmel Lutheran Church with a suggested donation of $15 ($10 students and children).
A hundred years after his death, Edvard Grieg (1843-1907) remains Norway’s most well-loved composer, drawing inspiration from the folk music of his day. In addition to playing famous pieces like Wedding Day at Troldhaugen and Gangar, Knut Erik will introduce us to the man and the composer, including important events in Grieg’s life and issues that inspired his music.
Born in Hell, Norway, Knut Erik is a graduate of the Conservatory of Music in Trondheim. His work includes performing in a wide range of musical areas including chamber music, operas and solo recitals. This year he returns to the Conservatory at the master’s level.

911-101: Commemoration & Education.
Although independent investigations began within weeks of both Pearl Harbor and the Kennedy assassination, the same was not true of the attacks of September 11th, 2001. Most are unaware that the formation of the 9/11 Commission was strongly opposed by many in Washington, including the Bush administration. It was only after intense pressure from the 9/11 families, led by a particular twelve calling themselves the Family Steering Committee, that fourteen months after the attacks, the first hearing finally began.
In this documentary film "9/11 Press for Truth", five of the most prominent members of the Family Steering Committee, including three of the 'Jersey widows' (recently in the news after Ann Coulter's attacks), tell their story for the first time, providing the most powerful argument yet for why 9/11 still needs investigation.
7:15pm Tuesday, September 11th, 2007 in Jefferson Hall, 1525 Santa Barbara Street, Santa Barbara; FREE.

STAR DREAMS (Crop Circles)
HopeDance FiLMs presents STAR DREAMS (Crop Circles) a provocative and visually stunning documentary of the mysterious crop circles. Through breathtaking imagery of the circles themselves and interviews with major researchers in the field, this film examines the phenomenon, largely presumed to be a hoax, and attempts to provide meaningful explanations. Since 1980, there have been almost 11,000 recorded crop circles world-wide. Science and the media have largely ignored them. But for researchers in the field, there is a consensus that a higher intelligence is sending a communiqué to us. What do they mean? How are we to respond? Are they here to offer humanity an opportunity for an expanded consciousness and an understanding of how the world works in the larger context of the inter-galactic community? Now is the time for a careful re-consideration based on the information and insights gained. See STAR DREAMS Monday Sept 17 at 7pm in SLO Public Library on the corner of Osos and Palm Sts. Suggested donation of $10. Jack and Susan Biesek will present some photos from a trip they recently attended, a sacred site / crop circle tour in England... and will share their questions and answers with us.
For information call Bob Banner 544-9663
It will also be playing in Santa Barbara on Oct 15, 7pm at the Faulkner Gallery inside the SB Library. Suggested donation of $10.

This week is the sixth year of PREFACE & SLO County Reads. This community reads program invites all county residents to read Ruth Ozeki’s novel All Over Creation and attend a community discussion on the book at your local library.
You are invited to a series of community discussions beginning:
Wednesday, September 19 Morro Bay Library (10:30 a.m.)
Thursday, September 20 Los Osos Library (6 p.m.)
Tuesday, September 25 Arroyo Grande Library (6 p.m.)
Thursday, September 27 San Luis Obispo Library (10:30 a.m.)
It’s so gratifying to read a provocative book and discuss it with others who also enjoy reading.
PREFACE involves all new Cal Poly students who read a specific book over the summer as part of their orientation to the university. SLO County Reads invites county residents to read the same book and bridges the gap between these two entities by naturally building a greater sense of community in a meaningful way. Contact your local library or see www.preface.calpoly.edu for more information.

Sacha Boutros will be performing with the Mike Raynor Group at the Inn at Morro Bay on Friday, September 21st from 7:30-10:30pm. Come and see her before she makes it big!!
Sacha Boutros is noted as being a rare talent reminiscent of the golden days of Jazz. Her sophisticated sultry style is sweeping the attention of Jazz and Latin Jazz listeners everywhere. She has a distinct voice and this is heard not only in her English but her Latin compositions. Classically trained, she has a 4 1/2 octave range. She can sing anything from Blues to Opera, but when asked what her favorite genre is she replies, "I love Jazz, so that's what I sing. It's in my soul."
"Sacha is vocalist like no other besides being a singer she is first and foremost a musician. With practically perfect pitch her musical Sophistication and elegance are timeless." - Frankie Laine
"Sacha..s voice is both sexy, provocative, soulful and smooth... " - Red Holloway
".. A Vocalist of Promise...." - San Diego Union Tribune
"A versatile, original and innovative singer who demonstrates that Jazz is in her soul." - Bitacora Cultural (Mexican Magazine, Baja California)

Claudia Russell will be kicking off the 2nd season at Música Del Río with Bruce Kaplan on guitar and Mark Petrella on bass by her side. Having heard these folks backing up Claudia often on The Minstrel Song Show at KCBX Public Radio, we are very glad they will be finding their way to Atascadero this September.
Claudia has as expressive voice that is as much at home on a whispery folk ballad as a full-tilt Buddy Holly styled romp. She plays a style all her own: eclectic folk music with traces of all her musical loves--blues, western swing, rock and county. Drawing from original compositions and, beloved old favorites (some almost forgotten) along with folk and pop classics; Claudia’s performance is truly heartfelt and cleverly entertaining.
Over the past few years since the release of her first solo CD in 2000, “Song Food”, Claudia has stepped away from seeing herself as mostly an interpreter and far more as a songwriter. The folk music radio community has taken notice and truly agrees. From Boston to Salt Lake to Los Angeles to San Luis Obispo she has garnered more airplay in seven years than most folk musicians get in a lifetime.
With hints of an East Coast folk style and attached to a West Coast irreverence, Claudia’s humor, personal stories and her “Who me?” attitude makes her live concerts a delightful social dissertation attached to a wonderful songfest.
During our 1st season there was never a lack of clever and delightful voices and sounds at Música Del Río. We know Claudia’s appearance here will continue this new tradition. For more insights and many good musical samples, you can find links to Claudia’s music at our website. Get a taste!
Claudia can stay at Música Del Río for as long as she likes on September 21st as long as you stay too. It could never be enough.

Description: In an afternoon of great blues and fun, SOhO and the Santa Barbara Blues Society present Nick Moss & The Flip Tops. Chicago blues is now synonymous with guitarist Nick Moss. Though the golden era of Chicago blues is long past with many of its key players deceased or retired, this young Chicagoan stands tallest in the current generation of blues performers who honor the letter and spirit of the great urban African American blues tradition. Guitar legend Buddy Guy sanctions Nick’s talent: “Nick Moss is one of the favorites at my club, the Legends. I always enjoy the way he plays and works hard to please our audience.” Passionate blues fans around the country gravitate to Nick’s playing in live performances and on recordings.
Admission: $10, blues society members & a guest, $8 each.

A Taste of Tango! Take a musical journey with a performance by soprano Ursula Maria Kleinecke and pianist Lynne Garrett. They will be delighting the Santa Maria public with a colorful program including music by the great American song writer Samuel Barber, L.A. based composer Mark Carlson and music by two great Argentinean composers Ginastera and Piazzolla. The fascinating musical life of Piazzolla (1921-1992) revealed a unique musical language that resonates with the dramatic folk music of Argentina with the pulse of the Tango at the core. Also included on the program will be the beloved ‘Malagueña’ by Cuban composer Lecuona.
Garrett and Kleinecke have had a long and exciting collaboration performing dozens of concerts across the United States and Mexico. Both received graduate degrees in Music performance from the Eastman School of Music in Western New York.
Concert will take place September 22nd, 4pm at the United Methodist Church, 311 South Broadway, and again in Cambria on Sunday September 23 at 4pm at the Presbyterian Church at 2250 Yorkshire Drive. Donations accepted at the door.

MAQUILAPOLIS [city of factories]
HopeDance FiLMs, the local Sierra Club and the SLO Fair-Trade Coalition present MAQUILAPOLIS [city of factories], a unique documentary that tells the story of globalization from the personal perspectives of Carmen and other Mexican maquiladora workers who together are working towards creating livable solutions in Tijuana. The film meets women who are each dealing with the hardships of environmental toxins, labor rights abuse, infrastructure and housing issues, and women’s rights. MAQUILAPOLIS approaches the workers as experts who can provide us with keys to our common future, inviting them to co-author their own story on videotape. Carmen and a million other maquiladora workers produce televisions, electrical cables, toys, clothes, batteries and IV tubes, the very fabric of life for consumer nations, making as little as $6 per day. They reach beyond the daily struggle for survival to organize for change: Carmen takes a major television manufacturer to task for violating her labor rights. Lourdes pressures the government to clean up a toxic waste dump left behind by a departing factory. As they work for change, the world changes too: a global economic crisis and the availability of cheaper labor in China begin to pull the factories away from Tijuana, leaving Carmen, Lourdes and their colleagues with an uncertain future. See MAQUILAPOLIS Sat, Sept 22 at 7 pm at the Steynberg Gallery 1531 Monterey, SLO. This film is FREE.

BORDERS BOOKSTORE, GOLETA: UCSB graduate Robert Donayre will discuss his first book, "What It Means to Serve: From Airborne Ranger to Peace Corps Volunteer." Book signing to follow.
At the age of seventeen, Donayre enlists to become an airborne ranger, young and unsure of the uncertainties that surround his future. As he becomes immersed in military life, he finds himself traveling, drinking, and meeting women during short, army-allotted excursions. When his four-year contract comes to an end, Donayre spends seven years earning his master’s degree and then decides to do the unthinkable: join the famously liberal Peace Corps.
Assigned to Moldova, a small country in the former Soviet Union, he becomes engrossed in a politically conflicted culture that’s notoriously intertwined with corruption and poverty. Donayre’s two-year stint as a teacher of English as a foreign language at the university level allows him to view, first hand, the effects of a broken nation on an emerging generation of workers. What It Means to Serve: From Airborne Ranger to Peace Corps Volunteer is a memoir that takes its readers through a range of politically charged emotions as Donayre openly engages in the dualities of war and peace.
Robert Donayre currently lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts, a far cry from his native city of Imperial Beach, California. He is a teacher of English as a second language for the New England School of English. He has received a B.A. in history from UC Santa Barbara and an M.A. in history from CSU Sacramento. In his free time, Donayre is an avid traveler and reader of nonfiction.

Entheogen: Awakening the Divine Within
HopeDance FiLMs presents Entheogen: Awakening the Divine Within, a feature length documentary which invites the viewer to rediscover an enchanted cosmos in the modern world by awakening to the divine within. This film explores the revived interest in psychedelics as the dawn of the new millennium arises. From the ancient mystery cults to 5 day trance parties in the Brazilian jungle and Burning Man, the neo archaic revival is picking up a new momentum. Entheogen: Awakening the Divine Within documents the emergence of techno-shamanism in the post-modern world that frames the following questions: How can a renewal of ancient initiatory rites of passage alleviate our ecological crisis? What do trance dancing and festivals celebrating unbridled artistic expression speak to in our collective psyche? Alex Grey, Stan Grof, Terrence McKenna, Ralph Metzner and others postulate how the disenchantment of the modern world may be remedied by summoning the courage to take the next leap in the evolution of planetary consciousness. See Entheogen: Awakening the Divine Within with the Director present Friday, Sept 28 at 7pm at the SLO Public Library on the corner of Osos and Palm Sts. Suggested donation of $10. Half goes to the filmmaker.
For information call Bob Banner 544-9663
It will also be playing in Santa Barbara on Thursday, Sept 27, 7pm at the Faulkner Gallery inside the SB Library.
Suggested donation of $10. Half goes to the filmmaker.
