Last year’s audiences touted the Follies as the best one yet. Award winning and talented choreographer and director Jason Sumabat vows to make the 2007 Follies even better. He will accomplish this with lively singing and dancing to music of the 1930's and 1940's such as I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” “Fascinating Rhythm,” and of course this year’s title “I’ve Got Rhythm,” Producer Bernie Kautz and her hard working committees work closely with Sumabat to bring the cast of talented local singers and dancers including guest performers and talented children to the Clark Center. On the strength of compelling live performances that reveal shades of Joni Mitchell, Duke Ellington, and a variety of other diverse influences, she has captured the attention of critics as an up-and-coming star. The Los Angeles Times called her voice "a pliable, versatile instrument, an effective vehicle for a musical expression that ranges freely from pop-style ballad to surprisingly effective scat singing." "I don't choose to identify solely with jazz or solely with pop. While jazz may be my root, both genres are me," she says. "If you're onstage and you're being real, the audience will know. If you have an inkling of who you are and what your direction is, you just have to follow that and say, 'This is me. Come join the story."

    Contact: Jessica Lamore   805-264-4383   publicisttcmusical@gmail.com
Tumbleweed Productions announces the world premier of Tumbleweed Connection, An Original Musical. Music by Elton John and Bernie Taupin. Book by Christopher Kahn.

At the dawn of the twentieth century two brothers have their destinies forged by an act of vengeance and an unbearable family secret. Their journeys so different, but ultimately entwined, are the driving force of the play Tumbleweed Connection. Their loyalties, loves and spiritual lives are desperately threatened in a crucible of duty, war and betrayal.

Yet, throughout the fabric of this moving, human drama, the music of Elton John provides an uplifting, inspirational melodic element, expressing the emotional range that can only be told in song. His familiar tunes provide the perfect synchronicity that transforms the colorful characters, powerful words and actions into a true twenty-first century folk opera. And the result is magical!

Performances are Friday 8:00 pm, Saturday 8:00 pm and Sunday 2:00 pm and 8:00 pm, October 19-21, 26-28 and November 2-4, 2007 in Forbes Hall at the Clarke Center, Arroyo Grande.

8:00 PM Música Del Río House Concerts Presents Walter Strauss
    Contact: Fred Munroe   466-6941   fmunroe@kcbx.net
“Imagine blending Bruce Cockburn’s finger-style guitar with Joni Mitchell’s flair for subtle jazz elements, and then add ethereal world rhythms and you begin to sense the extensive talent and wide-ranging influences that Walter Strauss brings together.”

Sometimes you go looking for a certain sound you want to hear. Sometimes when you aren’t really looking, it sneaks in and just slaps you silly. With Walter Strauss the sneak is not quiet and the slap is very powerful. You may have heard his guitar and humor at Corinne West’s side here at the very first Música Del Río concert last December or bringing down the house at Live Oak this summer. We did not know what we were getting, but we were blown away by what we got.

Walter Strauss is a spellbinding finger-style guitarist whose fiery technique conjures several instruments playing at once. With roots in American music and musicality that evokes far reaches of the globe, he weaves Americana, world beat, and jazz into a brand uniquely his own. Walter’s songs are romantic yet edgy, filled with intelligent and vivid imagery.

Walter Strauss can hold us for hours all alone and he also knows how to blend his own style with inimitable others. Walter comes to us with ace standup bassist and compadre Sam Bevan, known for his lyrical style and his work with David Grisman, Joe Craven and other heavy hitters. These are two delightfully interactive musicians – prepare yourself for a wonderful evening of inspiring musicianship and song.

Walter and Sam are coming to Música Del Río on Friday, October 19th. You will experience musical madness that will surely make you wonder why these guys have not cornered you with their outrageous presentation before. You can hear Walter at www.walterstrauss.com and Sam can be found at www.sambevan.com. This will be a historic musical evening at Música Del Río.

October 26th & 27th A special announcement about a class the SARC will be co-hosting at the end of October: “Foundation for Applied Biodynamics” (Oct. 26 & 27). Biodynamic agriculture is one of the earliest forms of organic agriculture, dating from the 1920’s. It involves an understanding of the farm as a living ‘organism’, specialized compost preparations and teas, and planting calendars based on planetary rhythms. Recently, biodynamics has been the subject of renewed interest because of the superior flavor and quality of biodynamic produce. This interest is particularly strong within the California wine grower community. The course is being offered through Cal Poly’s Continuing Education Department. To register, please visit: http://www.continuing-ed.calpoly.edu/wine.html Details may also be found on the SARC website: http://www.calpoly.edu/~sarc/bd.htm The class is suited to farmers and gardeners alike!

Fracasso’s live appearances around the country, Europe and Japan garner praise, including this quote by music writer Deborah Benjamin of the Oklahoma Gazette: “Michael Fracasso always seems to hold an audience’s attention…(he) needs only a guitar and his smooth tenor to transfix a room.” Bob and Wendy with Tim Novoa will open the show, performing Wendy’s songs accompanied by guitar, cello, mandocello and Tim’s drums. They will join Michael on stage during his set when called upon for harmonies and instrumental backing. Call the Coalesce Bookstore at 805 772-2880 for reservations. Tickets: $15

10:00 AM  -  4:00 PM El Dia de los Muertos
    Contact: Marta Peluso   805-544-9251   director@sloartscouncil.org
ARTS Obispo will once again participate in the Mexican festival known as El dia de los muertos. This year an altar will be set up in ARTS Space Obispo for the Day of the Dead festival from October 29-Novermber 2. The general public is invited to contribute items to the altar, also known as an ofrenda, in remembrance of their dead relatives or loved ones who were passionate about art and culture.

The Mesoamerican culture from where this tradition came believed that all things had an opposite, and that without this opposite things could not be complete. To know joy one needed to understand sorrow; to know what was light, one needed to experience darkness. This dualistic feature is crucial to understanding El dia de los muertos, where mortality is celebrated as the flip side of life.

Ofrendas are often decorated with photographs of the deceased, bright yellow cempazuchil flowers, images of saints and candles. In addition, favorite foods and drinks and things that once belonged to the deceased are often placed on the altar.

If you would like to contribute to ARTS Obispo's El dia de los muertos altar, bring items to ARTS Space Obispo, #165 in the SLO Creamery from 10 AM-4 PM on Monday, October 29. For more information, contact ARTS Obispo at 805-544-9251 or office@sloartscouncil.org.
