The Design Workshops are facilitated by members of the Garden Escapes design team and the format of the workshop is a dialog between the workshop attendees and Garden Escapes designers. Attendees are encouraged to bring photographs or digital media of things they have created, or are having design challenges with, related to the evening’s topic to share with the group. There will be a PowerPoint presentation to introduce the subject with handouts presented to the participants. “Our workshop series has been very successful” says Garden Escapes designer Keith Sattler. “We have enjoyed working with the participants. They bring good questions and are very enthusiastic about their projects.” The Design Workshops will be presented on the first Tuesday of the month until the end of the year at the Garden Escapes office and are free. All workshops will begin at 6 p.m. The topic scheduled for the next month, December 4, is “Planning Your Large Space.” The schedule for 2008 will come out in November.    8:00 PM Música Del Río House Concerts Presents Small Potatoes
    Contact: Fred Munroe   466-6941   fmunroe@kcbx.net
Small Potatoes is Jacquie Manning and Rich Prezioso. This Chicago based duo refer to themselves as eclecto-maniacs. They have often been refered to as “new-fashioned folksingers…A good way to make magic.”

With Small Potatoes you hear two of the best voices on the road along with some truly fine guitar playing, and a touch of tin whistle, flute, mandolin and bodran along with many other percussion toys. There are really no rules here. Sometimes the traditional will sound contemporary and sometimes the contemporary sounds traditional. They always seem comfortable with what the evening has to offer whether playing an upbeat cowboy swing tune or a traditional ballad. If Jacquie and Rich seem to think the audience is getting too comfortable as spectators, watch out.

Never before have vegetables been part of what we offer you. Never before have any musicians sharing their craft at Música Del Río come as such a package. The folk music magazine Dirty Linen said of Small Potatoes; “one of most polished, inventive and entertaining shows” in folk music traveling today. When we think of a duo offering from “celtic to cowboy” we must admit we have never heard of a “polished” spud.

Small Potatoes has been to the Central Coast a time or two at SLOFolks. Many of their loyal local fans asked us to find a spot for them at Música Del Río and we did. They have shared the stage with the likes of Tom Paxton, Greg Brown, Peter Rowan and Trout Fishing in America. They are joining us alone this time, unless someone else is hiding in the sack.

Great music is usually enough to keep us happy at Música Del Río. With Jacquie and Rich that shall happen. But when the spuds come out, great fun shall be added to the evening at no extra charge.

Fry on over to their website at www.smallpotatoesmusic.com and listen to some choice musical samples. After you have chipped away at a few tunes, we trust you can peel yourselves away long enough to join us. Ketchup not required.

This screwball comedy involves a theatre company opening a brand new show out of town in Boston's majestic Colonial Theatre. Act 1 is a wonderful mutual admiration society where everyone is a genius and the play of course is brilliant. Act 2 we see that the opening night did not go so well and there is blame enough for everyone as to why. Act 3 is after the reviews have come out and well... you'll just have to see the show to enjoy the ending. Moss Hart has filled this play with wit and absurdity as he eviscerates the acting world.

3:00 PM  -  5:00 PM Cal Poly Symphony Fall Concert Featuring the Renowned Amelia Piano Trio
    Contact: Michele Abba   805-756-2406   music@calpoly.edu
The Cal Poly Symphony begins its new season with a new collaboration and new music for its Fall Concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18, in Harman Hall in the Performing Arts Center's Christopher Cohan Center.

The Amelia Piano Trio will make a special appearance with the Cal Poly Symphony for the West Coast premiere of Daron Hagen's "Orpheus and Eurydice: Concerto for Violin, Cello, Piano and Orchestra." Composer Hagen's premiere with the Philadelphia Orchestra made him the youngest composer since Samuel Barber to work with that prestigious orchestra. The Washington Post said, "A composer who can crystallize a moment in musical magic is a rarity. Expect to hear more of Hagen."

The Amelia Piano Trio is known nationally for championing new music and working energetically with young musicians. String Magazine called the trio "remarkable" and Strad said it was "exemplary."

The trio's short history includes performances at Carnegie Hall and Seattle's Meany Hall, and tours of Central Asia with Yo Yo Ma and his Silk Road Ensemble.

The concert will begin with "Mosaics," a lyrical work by American composer Howard Hanson, and conclude with Beethoven's powerful Fifth Symphony.

Tickets for the concert are $6 for students, $8 and $10 for senior citizens and $10 and $12 for the public. They are on sale at the Performing Arts Ticket Office from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. To order by phone, call SLO-ARTS (756-2787). Discounts are given to patrons who buy tickets to four or more Music Department events for 2007-2008.

Jazz Up the Season With Cal Poly's Annual Fall Concert!

A young, fresh approach to one of America's great art form – jazz – will be presented by the Cal Poly jazz ensembles.

The ensembles, two big bands and a combo, will show how jazz is reinvigorated by the next generation, according to Paul Rinzler, Cal Poly's director of Jazz Studies.

Cal Poly student-musicians will perform “Bugle Call Ra,” written by Bill Holman for Doc Severinsen, former trumpeter and leader of the “Tonight Show” band, and “I'm Gonna Live Until I Die,” made popular by jazz vocalist Sarah Vaughan.

The groups will also perform “What a Wonderful World,” made famous by Louis Armstrong, and additional jazz bests by contemporary composers.
