The Symphony's final concert of the series at the Cohan Center, San Luis Obispo Performing Arts Center
Peter Orth, Piano Soloist
Johannes Brahms, Piano Concerto No. 1, Op. 15
Leos Janacek, Sinfonietta
We began this season with Brahms and so we end it. Johannes Brahms was a 24 year old musical genius when he found his voice in this, his first piano concerto. But although a young artist, he also found a way to change the "rules" of the genre to suit his vision. In contrast, Czech composer Janacek was 72 and at the height of his international fame when he composed this simple, unpretentious, folk-inspired and truly lovely Sinfonietta.

KCBX has been offered an inside look at NPR West. We’ve reserved a luxury coach to take forty-eight listeners and key staff members on a day tour of National Public Radio’s production facilities in Los Angeles on Tuesday, May 8. To maximize our time at NPR, we’re scheduling our departure from the SLO Vet’s Hall at 7:00 a.m. If there is interest, we will arrange for pick-ups in the Santa Maria and Santa Barbara areas.
When we arrive in L.A., we’ll break into small groups to tour the studios and offices where NPR’s daily work is done. Renée Montagne will be there to greet you as she finishes her day of reporting on Morning Edition.
After lunch, there will be a presentation by Mike Shuster, NPR’s roving foreign correspondent. In May he will be recently returned from a visit to Damascus and a meeting of Middle East Correspondents.
The trip home that afternoon will include a dinner stop at Lucky’s Restaurant in Montecito.
The ticket price of $150 includes round trip luxury coach transportation, the NPR West tour, catered lunch (with wine,) conversation with Mike Shuster, and the three-course dinner at Lucky’s Restaurant (exclusive of alcoholic beverages.) Música Del Río House Concerts Presents Cyrus Clarke & The Expedition
|
|
| |
|
Contact: Fred Munroe 466-6941 fmunroe@kcbx.net
|
| |
|
Cyrus Clarke’s music finds its sense of place in a sound best described as California Americana. He has been a progressive bluegrass pioneer. As a founding member of The Cache Valley Drifters and The Acousticats, Cyrus is known far and wide as a true pioneer of modern bluegrass music.
He is a songwriter whose compositions have been recorded by Kate Wolf, David West, Mike Mullins, and Phil Salazar. His inventive flatpicking style is at home with fiddle tunes, rock-grass improvisations ala The Dead, or slow, soft waltzes and ballads. He is a California artist who has traveled the highways and back roads of his home state for over thirty years leaving a trail of remarkable sounds as he translates the echoes the canyons send back to him into new songs to share with us.
Cyrus is known for his skill in assembling the best musicians to share the stage, whether at a festival, a concert hall or the living room at Música Del Río. The Expedition merely proves this point too well.
Mike Mullins is one of the most sought after mandolin experts in the west. From solo performances of Civil War ballads from his own pen, to sharing the stage with the likes of David Grisman; there is no finer master of the mandolin. Mike will help you understand why his mandolin is an incisive part of what you came to hear this evening.
Barney Tower is the latest king of the Fender Telecaster. The guitar that first contributed to the blending of roundhouse blues and bluegrass over 50 years ago has never been in more capable hands than Barney’s. He is the master of this electric addition to the otherwise acoustic sound of The Expedition.
Jack Joshua spent the first 20-plus years playing bass as part of a very contemporary sound. Over the past few years he has been drawn back to the “the real roots of American music”. From delta blues to New Orleans jazz, from western swing to Negro spirituals; Jack sets a bass line that makes all of us feel like we were born to listen.

The band described by Blues Revue as “the one that has a way with the blues like no other band, ... rollicking, super-cool, jazzy, and hip” returns to Santa Barbara to play for the blues society for the first time in ten years. Led by world-class musicians Charlie Baty and Rick Estrin, this group has been together for almost 30 years. Of Baty, the Village Voice said that “he plays as much guitar as Eric Clapton and Buddy Guy put together.” Estrin’s original songs, wiseguy vocals and diabolical harmonica wizardry always make for a fun-packed evening. No wonder that for the last 4 years in a row this band has been nominated by The Blues Foundation as Best Blues Band of the Year! The blues doesn’t get any better.
Saturday, May 12.

The UCSB JAVANESE GAMELAN ENSEMBLE (Kyai Selamet), led by Michael Pievac and featuring guest music director Djoko Walujo and guest dancers, will present a concert on Sunday, May 13 at 5 p.m. in Lotte Lehmann Concert Hall. Admission is $12/general, $7/students, with tickets at the door only. For further information, please call 893-7001, or visit: http://www.music.ucsb.edu
Special guest director is Djoko Walujo, special guest choreographer and dancer is Baghawan Ciptoning. Dance is under the direction of Nyoman Wenten and Nanik Wenten, with Eko Supriyanto and Casey Lee Sims. The program features The Dance Drama, Panji Candrakirana. Director Michael Pievac has also taught gamelan for the California State Summer School Arts Program and Pomona College. He is an alumnus of Cal Arts where he studied gamelan with Djoko Walujo and I Nyoman Wenten. Experienced in dance wayang (shadow theater) accompaniment, he has performed and toured regularly throughout the United States and Canada with Cliff DeArment and Maria Bodmann (Bali and Beyond), and Larry Reed (Shadow Light Productions, San Franciso). The Gamelan, which is at the center of art music of Indonesia, is not a single instrument, but an entire orchestra ranging from a few to as many as 75 instruments, each ringed with an aura of centuries-old tradition and reverence. The instruments include gongs and metallophones, drums, bowed stringed instruments, and a wooden xylophone. Gamelan music operates on cyclic time as opposed to the linear time that underlies Western music. The ensemble does not rely upon a single visible conductor. Instead, tempo is controlled by audible drum signals, while formal elements are controlled by signals that are passed between various melodic instruments.

EXHIBITS, FILMS, AND MORE AT IOOF HALL
Residents and tourists alike will soon have a chance to explore the history of coastal California through a series of changing exhibits hosted at our “new” IOOF Historic Hall.
Opening Saturday, May 19 (2-5 PM), visitors will experience the Great Depression of the 1930s through two exhibits: “Behind a Lens: The Photography of Dorothea Lange” and “The Civilian Conservation Corps, A Bridge to Recovery.”
Professor Dan Krieger will be on hand to introduce these two exhibits with a short talk on the Great Depression and its effects on local communities. The exhibits were put together by Ashley Fletcher and Joseph Walker, students in Krieger’s California history class, as part of a collaborative effort with the newly formed Exhibit Committee of the South County Historical Society.
For those of you interested in local fishing communities, an additional exhibit will be featured on Abalone Harvesting in San Luis Obispo County (1900-1970s). This traveling exhibit was created by Steve Rebuck and our Resource Center Director/Librarian Craig Rock for the County Historical Society. In addition to photographs, the exhibit has many artifacts including a Japanese diving helmet and suit.
History buffs will notice local connections in all of the above exhibits especially with some of Lange’s photographs entitled the “Migrant Mother Series.” Thanks to the Library of Congress, our audience will able to see several photographs in this series that were taken near Nipomo. The abalone exhibit features a section on the Sylvester family and others who harvested abalone in South County .
More exhibits by Krieger’s students will open throughout the summer. Museum hours for the Historic Hall are Fridays and Saturdays, 1PM to 5 PM with special programs scheduled at 2 PM on the opening dates for new exhibits .

America: Freedom to Fascism
Friday May 25 HopeDance Films presents AMERICA: FREEDOM TO FASCISM, a 4 star film by Aaron Russo. It exposes the systematic erosion of civil liberties in America since the creation of the Federal Reserve System in 1913. Russo connects the dots between money creation, federal income tax, and the national identity card, which becomes law in May 2008. This film shows how America is moving headlong into a fascist police state. AMERICA: FREEDOM TO FASCISM makes 'Fahrenheit 9/11' look like "Bambi". See it May 25 at 4pm at the SLO public library on the corners of Osos and Palm Sts. It's time to wake up! For more information call Bob Banner 805 544-9663
A suggested donation of $10 for BOTH the film and Dr. Bowman's speech at 7pm May 25.
For a flyer about Dr. Bowman please either call 544-9663 or email info@hopedance.org

Cal Poly's Early Music Ensemble will present a variety of choral and orchestral works from 17th- and 18th-century Colonial California and South America at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 26, in the San Luis Obispo Mission de Tolosa.
Conducted by Cal Poly music Professor Thomas Davies, the ensemble will perform music composed by Ignacio de Jerusalem, Manuel de Sumaya, and Juan de Araujo. Cal Poly music Professor Craig Russell, credited with reconstructing many of the compositions, will provide introductory remarks before each piece is performed.
An instrumental ensemble will perform with the Early Music Ensemble.
Davies has been at Cal Poly since 1983 as director of choral activities and vocal studies. In addition to his work at Cal Poly, Davies is conductor of the Cuesta Master Chorale and serves as one of several conductors for Pacific Repertory Opera.
He is the choral conductor for the San Luis Obispo Mozart Festival and is associate director of the Oregon Bach Festival Master Class in Choral Orchestral Conducting.
Russell, a composer, music historian, and master of guitar and lute, has been teaching at Cal Poly since 1982. He has done groundbreaking work bringing to light the forgotten musical heritage of 17th- and 18th-century Mexican and Californian culture. His original compositions have been recorded and performed nationally and at international festivals.

Yoga in the Chair is offered on Tuesday/Thursdays from 9:00 - 10:30 in the exercise room at The Palms, 55 Broad Street, San Luis Obispo, CA., free of charge to those over 50 years of age.
Yoga in the Chair is a part of life long learning classes provided by Cuesta College Emeritus Programs.
Yoga in the Chair is designed to be a whole package of health, healing and prevention based on the ancient hatha yoga principles of centering, balancing and breath control.
Each class focuses on building understanding of learning the full body breath, and relaxing into the breath so that there is an effortless effort when moving into one of the 908 yoga postures that heal the back, nurture the nervous system and aligns the spine with ease.
Yoga erases stress. Chronic tension in the back, neck and shoulders is dissolved with daily practice. Fran Dukehart, CYI encourages students to listen to their body and to stretch only in a manner that is enjoyable and comfortable. Those who have had insomnia, indigestion, inflexibility and tight joints have reported a renewed vigor and vitality even with one class.
