    Contact: Ruth Osorio   (805) 756-2600   cpwomensoutreach@gmail.com
Angela Davis, one of the most influential feminist scholars and activists of the late 20th century, will be headlining Cal Poly’s Women’s History Month celebration at 7 p.m. Friday, March 9, in Chumash Auditorium at Cal Poly. Davis will speak on “Building Communities of Resistance,” focusing on her experiences in activism, prison reform, and her belief in non-violent resistance. Davis will recount her experiences being on the FBI’s “Ten Most Wanted” list for a crime she didn’t commit, as well as her role in the civil rights movement. Davis, a professor at UC Santa Cruz, has spent her life “exposing the oppressions marginalized populations face in the United States, specifically focusing on the intersection of race, class and gender,” said Ruth Osorio, outreach coordinator for Cal Poly Women’s Programs. “Angela Davis is a critical figure in American history. Her involvement in the civil rights movement and the feminist movement shaped the way society thinks about class, race and gender,” Osorio said.

Admission is free for all students and $10 for community members. Tickets can be bought at the door. Cal Poly Women’s History Month is a collaborative effort of Cal Poly’s Women’s Programs and Services, the Multicultural Center, Vice President for Student Affairs office, Political Science Department, Ethnic Studies Department, Women’s Studies Program, History Department, Black Faculty and Staff Association, Career Services, Democratic Women United, and San Luis Obispo’s National Organization of Women.

   3:00 PM  -  6:00 PM Forever Plaid
    Contact: Jamie Maraviglia   805-489-4196   jamie@clarkcenter.org
One of the most popular and successful musicals in recent memory, this deliciously goofy revue centers on four young, eager male singers killed in a car crash in the 1950s on the way to their first big concert, and now miraculously revived for the posthumous chance to fulfill their dreams and perform the show that never was. Singing in the closest of harmony, squabbling boyishly over the smallest intonations and executing their charmingly outlandish choreography with over-zealous precision, the “Plaids” are a guaranteed smash, with a program of beloved songs and delightful patter that keeps audiences rolling in the aisles when they're not humming along to some of the great nostalgic pop hits of the '50s. Don't miss this musical that will leave everyone talking on Sunday, March 11, 2007 at 3:00pm at the Clark Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets range from $40-$50 and are available by calling the Clark Center Box Office at 489-9444 or by visiting the website at www.clarkcenter.org.

8:00 PM Música Del Río House Concerts Presents Kimberley Dahme
    Contact: Fred Munroe   466-6941   fmunroe@kcbx.net
To explain Kimberley Dahme is to define country blues and its symbiosis with Rock & Roll. As we look at country blues in America, a few interesting things come to mind: The bass lines between blues and rock & roll become very unclear once you unplug the guitars. Some of the best female voices are too often hiding behind a guitar or bass for years before they find a place where folks get a chance to hear their songs in their own voices. Many of these voices get heard and appreciated in Europe for years before we find a place for them back home. Kimberley Dahme proves all of these points and we are so sorry it took us so many years to get to know her. How does one of the most memorable voices in country blues get to unplug her guitar in Germany to dedicated fans for years before anyone outside of Nashville even knows she plays so much more than the electric base? How do the fans of the world renowned rock band Boston get to fall in love with her before those of us in California, her home state, begin to appreciate the solo sounds of this nightingale of country blues. Kimberley is the electric bass guitar player with Boston. Fresh off their latest tour she is taking the time to return to what she considers her roots. Rock & Roll owes a lot to country blues and Kimberley owes a lot to that foundation of her music. Before she once again plugs her bass back in for Boston, she will share the singer/songwriter she is in three house concerts on the El Camino Real between Salinas and Los Angeles this March. We are blessed that Música Del Río sits in the middle because that means Kimberley Dahme will sit in our living room with her guitar, maybe her bass and if we are very kind to her; maybe her flute. Regardless of what she is playing, she has a voice that tells us stories with music we will beg to hear again.

Based on the natural principles of gravity and breath, her peaceful yoga techniques emphasizes listening to the breath, breathing naturally and pressing into the feet. Learning to exercise the toes, ankles, and knees in a sequential manner supports better balance. When students learn to lift and stretch their spine while feeling their feet fully connect with the ground their posture looks better and feels better. With bi-weekly chair yoga sessions, standing tall and sitting tall becomes the new normal posture. Dukehart reminds students, ‘ if you allow your breath to lead your movements, the body will give you with better balance, stability and alert relaxation.’ Students such as Betty are told by visiting relatives that they noticed her warm beautiful smile as being brighter and that she was standing taller than last time they visited. Experience the passion that helped inspire the movie, "Moulin Rouge!" The story of the consumptive Parisian courtesan Violetta, who finds true love with the youthful and innocent Alfredo.
