One of Brazil's best jazz singers will bring the sounds of authentic Brazilian samba and the bossa nova to Cal Poly’s Jazz Night concert at 8 p.m. Friday, June 1, in Harman Hall in the Performing Arts Center's Christopher Cohan Center.
Claudia Villela, called “the Brazilian Bobby McFerrin” by JazzTimes magazine, will accompany the University Jazz Band #1 in performing several of her own compositions.
“Brazilian music has such charm and excitement,” said says Paul Rinzler, director of jazz studies at Cal Poly. “The collaboration between a great vocalist and composer like Claudia Villela and an American big band is a very natural and obvious one.”
Two jazz combos and the University Jazz Band #2 will also perform at the concert, which is a fundraiser for the University Jazz Band #1's tour of Brazil this summer.
Tickets to the Jazz Night Concert are $6 to $15 and can be bought at the Performing Arts Ticket Office 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. To order by phone, call SLO-ARTS (756-2787); to order by fax, dial 756-6088; to order on the Web, go to www.pacslo.org.
Patrons who buy season tickets to four Music Department events through the Performing Arts Ticket office will receive a 10 percent discount; a 15 percent discount is given to those who buy tickets to five or more events.
The concert is sponsored by Cal Poly's College of Liberal Arts, Music Department and Instructionally Related Activities program. For more information, call the Music Department at 756-2406 or go online to http://music.calpoly.edu.

Awakening the Dreamer/Changing the Dream in SLO!
A global initiative that has swept six countries comes to San Luis Obispo on Saturday, June 2nd, 2007 with a unique, four-hour symposium on the current challenges facing our planet and the interconnectedness of our personal well-being, environmental, and social justice issues.
The Awakening the Dreamer/Changing the Dream symposium will be held Saturday, June 2nd, from 1:00 -5:00 pm at Unity of San Luis Obispo, located at 1490 Southwood Drive (intersection of Southwood and Johnson). A donation of $10.00 is requested, to cover costs ($5.00 for students with ID). Snacks and drinks will be provided. A wine and cheese reception will be after the symposium to extend the opportunity for community networking and follow-up discussions. There is no additional charge to attend the reception.
This symposium was created by the Pachamama Alliance, www.pachamama.org, a non-profit organization working in partnership with indigenous peoples in the Amazon region. The event is co-sponsored by Unity of San Luis Obispo. Minister Leona Evans will discuss the symposium on her locally-broadcast Positive Living program on Charter Cable channel 2 (or 10) which airs Wednesdays & Thursdays at 8:00 pm, and Fridays at 9:00 pm.?
The Symposium has been created in collaboration with some of the finest indigenous, scientific, artistic and activist minds in the world. It features multi-media and group participation as it addresses the illusions and delusions that drive the environmental, social justice, and spiritual crises of our times. For more information, visit the website at www.awakeningthedreamer.org/.
Seating is limited, so reservations are strongly recommended. To reserve a place, contact Cindy Dixon at cindy.dixon@charter.net, or 805-237-1135, or Jim Cole, jim.cole@charter.net or 805-239-0147 (e-mail is preferred).

Texas troubadour Alex Whitmore and former Linda Ronstadt bandmate Kenny Edwards are among more than a dozen songwriters slated to perform at the West Coast Songwriters showcase on Sunday, June 3 at Linnaea's Café in San Luis Obispo. Show begins at 7pm. There is no cover charge. All ages are welcome.
The showcase is presented by West Coast Songwriters, a Bay Area-based non-profit educational organization with more than 1,200 members. WCS member Steve Key of Pismo Beach is the manager of the new showcase, which is held on first Sundays at Linnaea's. The debut showcase on May 6 included 18 performers in a three-hour concert.
Part of the show will be a competition among WCS members for Best Song and Best Performance of the night. Painted Sky Studios of Cambria has donated two hours of recording time to the Best Song winner. The Best Performance prize is a coaching session with Daniel Whittington, lead vocalist of the band Rhodes, who is also an instructor at the Music Lab Guitar School in SLO. Guest judges will be professional songwriters Cliff Stepp, Bent Myggen and Christina Grimm.
Performers scheduled for the June 3 showcase include Stuart Mason of the celtic group Molly's Revenge, Butch Boswell of the band Virgil Cain, and a country singer named Dallas.
West Coast Songwriters runs nine monthly showcases in Hollywood, Sacramento, around the Bay Area and now in SLO. In August, each showcase will invite its Best Song winners to return for a playoff -- one winner from each showcase goes to the finals held at the Freight & Salvage nightclub in Berkeley. Three winners are picked to perform in front of publishers, producers, booking agents, hit songwriters and record company executives at the 27th Annual Songwriters Conference at Foothill College in Los Altos September 7-9.
Songwriters interested in performing on the July 1 showcase may contact steve@stevekey.com.

God Grew Tired of Us, an award winning documentary of three young refugees, members of the “Lost Boys” of Sudan and their struggle to adjust to life in the United States. After surviving losing everything -- family, home, land, nation and being displaced by that nation's horrific civil war, they meet their challenges with grace and resolve. The boys didn't know if their parents and siblings are dead or alive. They treasure memories of their pre-war homeland and its tightly knit village society as they adjust to life in America. It's a story of resilient and hopeful people bearing up under conditions few of us could imagine.
SLO: Monday June 4 at 7pm at the SLO public library on the corner of Osos and Palm St. in SLO.
Suggested donation is $5.
Review: From HopeDance:
Winner of both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival, God Grew Tired of Us explores the indomitable spirit of three “Lost Boys” from the Sudan who leave their homeland, triumph over seemingly insurmountable adversities and move to America, where they build active and fulfilling new lives but remain deeply committed to helping the friends and family they have left behind.

UC Santa Barbara Professor Mark Juergensmeyer, one of the nation’s foremost experts on the relationship between religion and violence, will present a lecture and discussion at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 5, in the east wing of Chumash Auditorium at Cal Poly.
Is religion at the heart of the problem of global violence, or is the rise in religious violence a sign of violent people using religion to advance various social, political and economic agendas? Those are some of the questions Juergensmeyer will explore in his talk, “The Global Rise of Religious Violence.”
Drawing on numerous interviews with terrorists across the globe and his work on conflict resolution, Juergensmeyer will pose and begin to answer the question of how we might address the problem of religiously motivated terrorism.

SANTA BARBARA: June 5 (Tues) 7:00pm, Faulkner Gallery inside the Santa Barbara Pubilc Library in Santa Barbara (Anapamu Street)
Suggested donation $5
Review: From HopeDance:
Winner of both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival, God Grew Tired of Us explores the indomitable spirit of three “Lost Boys” from the Sudan who leave their homeland, triumph over seemingly insurmountable adversities and move to America, where they build active and fulfilling new lives but remain deeply committed to helping the friends and family they have left behind.

The Cal Poly Music Department student production ensemble RSVP will stage productions of “Ligatures!” at 8 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, June 5 and 7, in the Pavilion in the Performing Arts Center.
The “transmedia” production is the second in a trilogy exploring the primeval elements of music itself, said artistic director and RSVP series producer Antonio G. Barata. “A blending of sound, visuals and staging, this theatrical concert is based on the medieval genre of a morality play where characters represent archetypes of virtues and emotions.
“This performance takes the audience deep into the jungle, where a band of guerrilla warriors struggle with the collision of modern warfare and ancient spiritual ways. Satirical humor is interjected by visits with the jungle animals and a group of mafia-like heads of state called ‘The Suits.’ Though set in a time of war, the show is ultimately about hope and ends with an unexpected twist,” Barata said.
Tickets are $11 and are on sale at the Performing Arts Ticket Office from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. To order by phone, call SLO-ARTS (756-2787).
Patrons who buy season tickets to four Music Department events, through the Performing Arts Ticket office, will receive a 10 percent discount; a 15 percent discount is given on tickets to five or more events.
The show is sponsored by the Cal Poly Music Department, College of Liberal Arts, and Instructionally Related Activities program. For more information, call the Music Department at 756-2406.

March and Rally for Affordable Health Care for All - Thursday, June 7th – 5:00 p.m. - Meet @ De la Guerra Plaza; March to County Courthouse for Rally
Santa Barbara is the 300th consecutive city to be holding an event in the State-wide OneCareNOW campaign. There will be hundreds of individuals participating from many supporting organizations: ACLU, League of Women Voters, Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice, Health Care for All, California State Employees Association, California Teachers Association, Green Party, AAUW, Unitarian Society of Santa Barbara Social Concerns Committee, Democratic Women of Santa Barbara, and many others.
Participants are encouraged to bring signs declaring support for health care reform, and to bring a friend or two. Organizations are encouraged to march in groups with an identifying banner or sign.
Senate Bill 840 (Kuehl), the California Universal Health Care Act, vetoed last year by Governor Schwarzenneger, will eventually get signed by some Governor. Meanwhile, the more people who publicly show support, the faster that signing will occur. This is the people's legislation, designed for efficiency, fairness and sustainability. As such, it challenges enormously powerful interest groups who have the money. But the will of the people will win. See you there, and bring your neighbor.

A Crude Oil Awakening: The Oil Crash
Friday June 8 HopeDance Films presents the World Premiere of A Crude Oil Awakening: The Oil Crash as part of the SLO LOCALization Film Festival. This documentary is a wake up call to our oil addiction and makes a compelling case for the need to curb our consumption NOW. We’re running out and don’t have a plan! The film confronts the U.S. denial of an emerging oil crisis and our inadequate energy policies and technologies. A Crude Awakening: The Oil Crash presents a well argued, well-paced, and well-edited summary of what peak oil is and what it will mean for us all. There will be a question and answer period to follow. See this important film Friday June 8 at 7 pm at the SLO public library on the corner of Osos and Palm St. in SLO. Suggested donation is $10.

"Salute to the Sun" Yogathon June 21 at Cloisters Park in Morro Bay
MORRO BAY – The Summer Solstice will be celebrated June 21 at Cloisters Park with Morro Bay’s fourth Yogathon.
Participants will celebrate the longest day of the year with the Salute to the Sun – 12 Yoga poses in a flowing sequence. People will repeat the 12-pose sequence 12 times in a row to create a set. The set is performed nine times, with two-minute rests between each set.
“It’s an endurance and stamina experience,” said Jenny Brantlee of Morro Bay and founder of Yogawave, which sponsors the community event, “and designed to bring health, peace and happiness to people.”
It is based on the Yoga Mala, a spiritual event centered on the number 108, said Brantlee, who began practicing Yoga eight years ago with Patricia Walden and Bo Forbes, two widely known Yoginis based in Boston. Brantlee, who formerly taught ballet at Harvard University, began teaching Yoga six years ago, first in Boston, and currently teaches Yoga at the Morro Bay Community Center, Morro Bay Library, and Los Osos Fitness.
This event is rare in the U. S., Brantlee said, explaining that 108 is a spiritual number and “universally symbolic in many cultures.”
The event is cost-free. Voluntary donations may be made, with all donations turned over to Woods Humane Society.
The Yogathon will take place from 5:30 p.m. to about 7:30 p.m. Sunset will be at 8:21 p.m.
All Yoga instructors in the area are encouraged to join in at the community event and help lead participants if they want to, said Brantlee.
“Come and join in,” said Brantlee. People are encouraged to bring Yoga mats if they have them or do the Salute to the Sun on the grass at the park just west of and visible from Highway 1. Brantlee will have mats available for those who need them.

Sign-ups are currently being taken for Pacific Repertory Opera's two week long Summer Day Camp for kids ages 8 to 15. The camp runs from Monday, July 23 through Friday, Aug. 3 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. daily. It will be held at Grace Church at 1350 Osos St, in San Luis Obispo. Campers need to bring their own lunches, but an afternoon snack is provided. Refridgeration is available for lunches.
Campers will learn vocal technique, drama and stage movement, ear-training and musicianship, use of props, costumes and stage make-up from local professionals in the vocal and performing arts. No experience is necessary, just a willingness to have fun!
This year’s camp will end with an evening performance of an adaptation of Gilbert & Sullivan’s “The Mikado” before an audience of friends and family on Friday, Aug. 3. This operetta is set in the courts of Japanese royalty and features all of the drama and excitement of grown-up opera! This children’s version will be richly costumed by one of PRO’s resident costumers, and performed on stage with modest sets and props. Parent participation is encouraged in providing props, sewing costumes, and building sets.
The instructors for Opera Camp are local professionals with extensive experience in the arts. Jill Anderson, Pacific Repertory Opera’s General Director, will provide stage and movement direction. She has directed PRO professional productions of /Die Fledermaus/ and /Così Fan Tutte/, as well as many Opera Camp productions. She teaches voice at Cuesta College and is a private voice teacher in Shell Beach.
The cost of the two week camp is $345 for the first family member and $320 for any additional family members. Some scholarship funds are available. For more information and an application, please contact Mikele Husking-Kline at (805) 541-5369 or by e-mail at propera@sbcglobal.net

Fundraisers must act as leaders from whatever position we hold in our organization. This requires an effective partnership with the board, upper-level management, and the staff. See case studies of leadership models which brought organizations up out of the ashes of near bankruptcy to positive cash flow and the pitfalls to look out for. This class will be a practical problem-solving workshop where you will look at real situations and needs in the community. A leadership assessment tool will be tailored to most benefit the needs of participants. Participants will email questions and organizational issues to the presenter before the workshop so that specific challenges can be addressed.

Awakening the Dreamer/Changing the Dream in Templeton!
A global initiative that has swept six countries comes to Templeton on Saturday, June 30th, 2007 with a unique, four-hour symposium on the current challenges facing our planet and the interconnectedness of our personal well-being, environmental, and social justice issues.
The Awakening the Dreamer/Changing the Dream symposium will be held Saturday, June 30th, from 1:00 -5:00 pm at Science of Mind church, the Positive Living Center, 689 Crocker St (at the corner of Crocker and 7th Streets). A donation of $10.00 is requested, to cover costs ($5.00 for students with ID). Snacks and drinks will be provided. A wine and cheese reception will be held after the symposium to extend the opportunity for community networking and follow-up discussions. There is no additional charge to attend the reception.
This symposium was created by the Pachamama Alliance, www.pachamama.org, a non-profit organization working in partnership with indigenous peoples in the Amazon region. The event is co-sponsored by the Positive Living Center and the Institute for Sustainable Living.
