Sign-ups are currently being taken for Pacific Repertory Opera's two week long Summer Day Camp for kids ages 8 to 15. The camp runs from Monday, July 23 through Friday, Aug. 3 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. daily. It will be held at Grace Church at 1350 Osos St, in San Luis Obispo. Campers need to bring their own lunches, but an afternoon snack is provided. Refridgeration is available for lunches.
Campers will learn vocal technique, drama and stage movement, ear-training and musicianship, use of props, costumes and stage make-up from local professionals in the vocal and performing arts. No experience is necessary, just a willingness to have fun!
This year’s camp will end with an evening performance of an adaptation of Gilbert & Sullivan’s “The Mikado” before an audience of friends and family on Friday, Aug. 3. This operetta is set in the courts of Japanese royalty and features all of the drama and excitement of grown-up opera! This children’s version will be richly costumed by one of PRO’s resident costumers, and performed on stage with modest sets and props. Parent participation is encouraged in providing props, sewing costumes, and building sets.
The instructors for Opera Camp are local professionals with extensive experience in the arts. Jill Anderson, Pacific Repertory Opera’s General Director, will provide stage and movement direction. She has directed PRO professional productions of /Die Fledermaus/ and /Così Fan Tutte/, as well as many Opera Camp productions. She teaches voice at Cuesta College and is a private voice teacher in Shell Beach.
The cost of the two week camp is $345 for the first family member and $320 for any additional family members. Some scholarship funds are available. For more information and an application, please contact Mikele Husking-Kline at (805) 541-5369 or by e-mail at propera@sbcglobal.net

More than twenty songwriters from all over the Central Coast will converge on Sunday, July 1, at Linnaea's Cafe in San Luis Obispo for the monthly West Coast Songwriters showcase. Show begins at 7pm. There is no cover charge. All ages are welcome.
The showcase includes a competition among WCS members for Best Song and Best Performance of the night. Painted Sky Studios of Cambria has donated two hours of recording time to the Best Song winner. Guest judges will be professional songwriters Kate Bennett, Daniel Whittington and Deb Thacker. Cliff Stepp of KVEC-AM is the MC.
Performers scheduled for the July 1 showcase include Bill Gessner, Minnesota-based singer-songwriter who also teaches at the SummerSongs camp held annually at Zaca Lake. Michael Shelton from Orcutt, who won the Best Performance prize in May, returns in pursuit of the Best Song award. SLO residents Deborah Kirk, Mark Lancaster, Amie Richie, Daniel Hawks, Michael Chiorello and Matthias Clark will share the stage with Dallas Pehl from Paso Robles and Santa Barbara-area performers Jackie Morris, Rebecca Troon, Susan Marie Reeves, Stephen Styles, Cara Tower and Jena Douglas.
West Coast Songwriters is a Bay Area-based non-profit educational organization with more than 1,200 members. WCS member Steve Key of Pismo Beach is the manager of the SLO showcase, which is held on first Sundays at Linnaea's. West Coast Songwriters runs nine monthly showcases in Hollywood, Sacramento, around the Bay Area and now in SLO. In August, each showcase will invite its Best Song winners to return for a playoff -- one winner from each showcase goes to the finals held at the Freight & Salvage nightclub in Berkeley. Three winners are picked to perform in front of publishers, producers, booking agents, hit songwriters and record company executives at the 27th Annual Songwriters Conference at Foothill College in Los Altos September 7-9.

SOUL SEARCHING: THE JOURNEY OF THOMAS MERTON
Tuesday July 10 HopeDance FiLMs presents Soul Searching: The Journey of Thomas Merton, a captivating documentary illustrating Merton’s transformation from hedonistic womanizer to Trappist monk. Award-winning producer Morgan Atkinson brings out the paradoxical character of Merton, the monk, poet, peace activist, and spiritual writer who influenced the lives of so many during his short life. The film encompasses the full arc of Merton’s spiritual journey told through interviews with friends, authors, and scholars who have studied him as well as his own writings and beautiful images of his monastic life. The film reveals the struggles of Merton‘s spiritual search and how he emerged from this crucible with an international reputation - part Augustine, part Emerson, part Gandhi. Witness this fascinating journey of one of the spiritual giants of modern times Tuesday July 10 at 7pm at the SLO public library on the corner of Osos and Palm Sts. in SLO. Suggested donation of $5.
It will also be playing in Santa Barbara on July 19, 7pm at the Faulkner Gallery inside the SB Library. Suggested donation of $5. No one will be turned away from lack of funds.

WAR MADE EASY: HOW PRESIDENTS & PUNDITS KEEP SPINNING US TO DEATH
Monday July 16 HopeDance FiLMs, Code Pink and the SLO Progressive Democrats present War Made Easy, a documentary narrated by Sean Penn. The film is guided by Norman Solomon’s insightful analysis and meticulous research of the strategies used by administrations, both Democratic and Republican, to promote their agendas for war from Vietnam to Iraq. By familiarizing viewers with disturbing examples of war propaganda and media complicity, War Made Easy encourages us to think critically about the messages that are designed to promote and prolong a policy of militarism under the guise of the “war on terror.” See this important film Monday July 16 at 7pm at the SLO Public Library on the corner of Osos and Palm Sts. For information call Bob Banner 805 544-9663. FREE.
It will also be playing in Santa Barbara on July 12, 7pm at the Faulkner Gallery inside the SB Library. Suggested donation of $2-$5. No one will be turned away from lack of funds.

Pacific Repertory Opera helps kids produce “The Mikado”
Kids wanting to explore singing and stage craft this summer have a fun option with Pacific Repertory Opera’s two week long Opera Day Camp. Campers ages 8 to 15 will learn vocal technique, drama and stage movement, ear-training and musicianship, use of props, costumes and stage make-up from local professionals in the vocal and performing arts. No experience is necessary, just a willingness to have fun!
The camp runs from July 23rd through August 3rd, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. It will be held at Grace Church at 1350 Osos St., in San Luis Obispo. An afternoon snack is provided, but campers need to bring their own lunches. Refrigeration is available.
SOPHIE SCHOLL-THE FINAL DAYS
HopeDance FiLMs presents Sophie Scholl-The Final Days, a true story of Germany’s most famous anti-Nazi heroine. This Academy Award nominee for Best Foreign Language Film of 2005 stars Julia Jentsch in a luminous performance as the young coed-turned-fearless activist in the last six days of Sophie Scholl’s life: a heart-stopping journey from arrest to interrogation, trial and sentence. Her cross-examination by the Gestapo quickly escalates into a searing test of wills as Scholl delivers a passionate call to freedom and personal responsibility that is both haunting and timeless. See this multi-award winning film Tuesday July 24 at 7pm at the SLO Public Library on the corner of Osos and Palm Sts. For information call Bob Banner 805 544-9663. Suggested donation of $5-10.
It will also be playing in Santa Barbara on July 23, 7pm at the Faulkner Gallery inside the SB Library. Suggested donation of $5-$10. No one will be turned away from lack of funds.

Born in Smithville, Texas, Rhodes began playing the guitar at age 8 and recorded his first disc in 1958. He credits T-Bone Walker, B.B. King and Pee Wee Crayton as his main influences. After playing in the bands of Freddie King and Albert Collins he formed his own group. Having composed over 200 songs and touring for almost 50 years, Rhodes is still going strong, performing throughout North America and Europe. He has been recognized an incredible 12 years in a row by The Blues Foundation for his proficiency on the lap steel guitar. ENCOUNTER POINT
HopeDance FiLMs presents Encounter Point, an award winning documentary that follows a former Israeli settler, a Palestinian ex-prisoner, a bereaved Israeli mother and a wounded Palestinian brother who risk their lives and public standing to promote a nonviolent end to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. These civil leaders endure suicide bombings and checkpoints to meet with militants on both sides, as well as the wounded and apathetic masses. They sacrifice their safety, public standing, communities and homes in order to press for a grassroots movement for nonviolence and peace. It is a film about the everyday leaders in our midst, striving for solutions to complex situations. We are left with a sense that the gulf between Israelis and Palestinians is at once bridgeable and tremendously wide. See Encounter Point Monday July 30 at 7pm at the SLO Public Library on the corner of Osos and Palm Sts. For information call Bob Banner 805 544-9663. Suggested donation of $10.
It will also be playing in Santa Barbara on August 1, 7pm at the Faulkner Gallery inside the SB Library. Suggested donation of $10. No one will be turned away from lack of funds.
