7:30 PM Música Del Río House Concerts Presents Bob Sima
    Contact: Fred Munroe   466-6941   fmunroe@kcbx.net
Bob’s slogan is “Good Music for Good People”. This maybe the understatement of the decade. If it is possible to “channel” many long gone and sorely missed troubadours simultaneously into the fingers and voice of one singer/songwriter/guitarist, Bob Sima maybe doing it. If he dared to tell anyone that was really happening, we may only get to hear him on visitor’s day at the home. So keep this under your hat.

Acoustic Guitar Magazine says; “For anyone who wishes Van Morrison was still making rustic acoustic soul records like Tupelo Honey, Bob Sima’s new release Pour It On is going to be the find of the year. Brimming with memorable melodies…these are timeless songs that sound like they could have been bursting out of back porch radios for the past 40 years. But they don’t make you nostalgic so much as they make you look forward to what Sima will do next.”

Bob Sima’s first solo CD was passed on to us by Krista Detor and Dave Weber, who were at Música Del Río last February. When we first heard Bob Sima’s Pour It On, we listened. We listened again. With the exception of those artists who rise to the top of the pile after years on programs such as KCBX’s Minstrel Song Show and Pickin' Up the Tempo, the folk music scene is really a regional place. Bob travels extensively between his home in Maryland and the mid-west. Coming all the way to Atascadero is a big jump for an artist who is not yet a regular on folk music radio on the Central Coast.

Bob said Krista and Dave shared with him their recollections of the warm reception they received from all of us. He asked to come here about the time Pour It On was starting to show signs of wear from being played too often. Bob’s concert will be a celebration of both his music and the first anniversary of Música Del Río.

A hint of his music can be found by tracking down Bob’s website at www.bobsima.com. More of the same, live, will be found here on Saturday December 1st.

The ensemble will also perform David Dickau’s lively swing arrangement of “God Rest You Merry Gentleman.”

PolyPhonics will perform “A Child Is Born” by Leo Nester and “Ding Dong! Merrily On High,” arranged by English composer and conductor David Willcocks.

The concert’s featured work will be the world premiere of “Gloria” for double choir and organ, composed for the Cal Poly Choirs by music faculty member Meredith Brammeier. This is the fifth consecutive year that Brammeier has composed or arranged a work for “A Christmas Celebration.”

In addition, the Cal Poly Early Music Ensemble, Take It SLO (a capella) and O Snap (women’s barbershop) will perform a set of holiday favorites. The Cal Poly Brass Ensemble will perform as special guests of the Cal Poly Choirs.

AUDTIONS for M. BUTTERFLY!!! Tuesday, December 18th at 6:30 St. Stephens Church, 1344 Nipomo St, SLO 781-3889 ext 11 Performances are April 11 - May 4, 2008 Loosely based on the real-life relationship between French diplomat Bernard Boursicot and Chinese opera diva Shi Pei-Pu and inspired by Puccini’s opera Madame Butterfly, this imaginative, and at times shocking play won the Tony Award, the Drama Desk Award and the Outer Critics Circle Award as Best Broadway Play in 1988. Synopsis: Life as a French diplomat holds no excitement for Rene Gallimard until he meets Chinese opera star Song Liling, a "woman" who personifies the Western vision of the submissive, exotic oriental female. They begin an affair that lasts for twenty years, the story told through Gallimard’s distorted recollections as he now sits in a prison cell, accused of treason. We see the curious parallel of his life with the opera as it unfolds, and through his wife and colleagues we are made painfully aware of Gallimard’s delusions about Song’s true identity. Song is not "the perfect woman," in fact; "she" is a man, a Chinese spy, who uses her intimacy with Gallimard to bring French intelligence to the Chinese government during the Vietnam War. Even when presented with Song’s masculinity face to face, Gallimard cannot accept the truth, and is ultimately driven fatally into the operatic fantasy he has used over the years to keep the truth at bay. Rene Gallimard - 40 - 65 Rene is an "everyman." Someone you would pass on the street. He is someone whom a girl might say, "let's be friends." He can be easily seduced. Song Liling - Beautiful, seductive Asian woman, 20 - 40. Must be played by a man. Marc/Man #2/Counsul Sharpless - 35 - 50, First seen as a rowdy college man then Outgoing, sexy...everything Rene is not. Renee/Woman at Party/Girl in Magazine - Pretty girl, 25 - 30. Seductive, shrewd. Comrade Chin/Suzuki/Shu Fang - Asian woman - 30- 50 A Communist Official, "Butterfly's " l
