4:00 PM  -  6:00 PM Hiroshima: Stop New Nuclear Arms Race
Contact: Peter G Cohen   805-884-0704   aerie2@verizon.netWould you be interestc
Peter G, Cohen, artist, activist and author of nuke-freeworld.com, is presenting a free, public event on August 5th from 4:00 to 6:00 at Plaza Del Mar (opposite SB Banos del Mar). The event will feature short talks by Cohen and student peace activist Ellen McClure, followed by a Love of Life Celebration featuring dancing to the LeGrand, Franks & Dodge band.

In his talk, Cohen will show how the aggressive nuclear policy of the Bush administration is stimulating a dangerous new international nuclear arms race and how to reverse this disasterous policy. Ellen McClure, a nuclear peace activist from UCSB, will talk about her participation in the recent student fast opposing UC participation in management of Livermore and Los Alamos National Laboratories.

Cohen’s talk will examine the influence of the military corporations on the Congress and our foreign policy, as well as the severe human and monetary costs of maintaining our nuclear weapons and delivery systems rather than working for disarmament, which we are pledged to do by UN membership and the Non-Proliferation Treaty.

The Love of Life Celebration is an antidote to the current epidemic of valuing money and power (greed) above life itself. The music and dancing on the grass of this beautiful plaza will express the love of life, the most powerful antidote to the greed disease, and the true foundation of action against this suicidal nuclear policy.

The event is sponsored by Veterans for Peace, Santa Barbara Quakers and others.

It is the story of a journey from despair to acceptance, challenge and finally, destiny. Believe in Me is an underdog story of triumph, friendship and love.     Contact: Sandra Marshall   545-7916   pdsloc@gmail.com
Progressive Democrats of San Luis Obispo County will host a FREE SHOWING of WAR MADE EASY: HOW PRESIDENTS & PUNDITS KEEP SPINNING US TO DEATH Narrated by Sean Penn, Featuring Norman Solmon “Superb" ?—Howard Zinn “Ominous” — InterPress Service “Chilling and Persusave” —Katrina Vander Heuvel, The Nation Location: Information Press Community Room 3436 Sacramento Dr. "A" San Luis Obispo Limited seating - RSVP suggested 545-7916

About the movie: War Made Easy reaches into the Orwellian memory hole to expose a 50-year pattern of government deception and media spin that has dragged the United States into one war after another from Vietnam to Iraq. Narrated by actor and activist Sean Penn, the film exhumes remarkable archival footage of official distortion and exaggeration from LBJ to George W. Bush, revealing in stunning detail how the American news media have uncritically disseminated the pro-war messages of successive presidential administrations. War Made Easy gives special attention to parallels between the Vietnam war and the war in Iraq. Guided by media critic Norman Solomon’s meticulous research and tough-minded analysis, the film presents disturbing examples of propaganda and media complicity from the present alongside rare footage of political leaders and leading journalists from the past, including Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, Defense Secretary Robert McNamara, dissident Senator Wayne Morse, and news correspondents Walter Cronkite and Morley Safer.

7:00 PM  -  9:00 PM HopeDance FILMS presents AN UN-REASONABLE MAN
    Contact: Bob Banner   805 544-9663   info@hopedance.org
AN UN-REASONABLE MAN HopeDance FiLMs presents An Un-Reasonable Man, a documentary about the life and career accomplishments of public advocate Ralph Nader. The film chronicles one of the most unique, important, and controversial political figures of the past half century. In his earlier career Ralph Nader came into national prominence and established himself as one of the most admired Americans and the leader of the modern Consumer Movement. Over the next thirty years and without ever holding public office, Nader built a legislative record that is the rival of any contemporary president. The crux of the film, though, is how Nader went from being an admired attorney responsible for the passage of historic safety and health laws to a pariah when he ran for president in 2000 and he is still blamed by many for the Bush election. It seems this has become his legacy rather than the decades of advocacy that preceded it. See An Un-reasonable Man, Wednesday August 29 at 7 pm at the SLO Public Library on the corner of Osos and Palm Sts. For information call Bob Banner 805 544-9663. Suggested donation of $5.
