Chris was diagnosed with a rare muscle and nerve disease in the eighth grade; changing his appearance, speech, and affecting the way he walks. Chris Simning’s style of speaking is validating and humorous, while seeking to build character, resiliency, and integrity amid the trials one must embrace.    8:00 PM Música Del Río House Concerts Presents John Batdorf & James Lee Stanley
    Contact: Fred Munroe   466-6941   fmunroe@kcbx.net
John Batdorf and James Lee Stanley have been on our short list of artists we must have at Música Del Río since we started this vision almost 2 years ago. Two more likely and unlikely collaborators may never set foot here again. The music of James Lee and John as individuals runs from traditional folk with pop and rock influences to a contemporary folk style that reflects more introspective themes. We also know they have been friends for over 30 years and recently finished an unusual project together. From the coffee houses of the 1970’s to some of the finest showcases of Americana music, James Lee is regularly invited back before he can close his guitar case. Tim Robbins, author of “Even Cowgirls Get the Blues” says: “…James Lee Stanley is probably the last great undiscovered singer-songwriter in America.” John Batdorf has been known as a voice of contemporary folk since Batdorf & Rodney came on the folk scene in 1970 with their first Atlantic Records album, “Off The Shelf”. Since then John has spent most of his time writing, arranging for others and performing along side everyone from Rod Stewart to Dwight Yoakum. America, Dan Seals and Kim Carnes have all recorded John Batdorf songs, often written specifically for them. John’s latest CD, “Home Again” includes exceptional new originals and a few recreations from the days of Batdorf and Rodney. James Lee and John took on a very unusual project in 2004 called “All Wood And Stones”. A highly original acoustic take on many early Rolling Stones songs arranged with tight harmonies. Many reviewers have regarded this CD as the best series of cover songs ever created. John and James Lee will each treat us to their own original material and then take us to a folk/rock place we have never been before. Whether a folk purist or a sponge of the eclectic, James Lee and John will make sure you leave Música Del Río happy that you came.

7:00 PM  -  9:00 PM HopeDance Films presents AMERICA:FROM FREEDOM TO FASCISM
    Contact: Bob Banner   805 544-9663   info@hopedance.org
Saturday April 14 HopeDance Films presents AMERICA: FREEDOM TO FASCISM, a 4 star film by Aaron Russo. It exposes the systematic erosion of civil liberties in America since the creation of the Federal Reserve system in 1913. Russo connects the dots between money creation, federal income tax, and the national identity card, which becomes law in May 2008. This film (purposefully shown near tax time!) shows how America is moving headlong into a fascist police state. AMERICA: FREEDOM TO FASCISM makes 'Fahrenheit 9/11' look like "Bambi". See it April 14 at 7pm at the SLO public library on the corners of Osos and Palm Sts. It's time to wake up! Cost is $5.     Sixth Annual Environmental Awards Nominations Deadline April 16

The San Luis Obispo County Community Foundation (SLOCCF) is asking for nominations for the sixth annual San Luis Obispo County Environmental Awards. The awards honor organizations or individual members of the community who, in the last year, have worked to improve and help preserve the Central Coast. Nominations must be completed by April 16 and the award ceremony will take place on June 1 at the SLO Botanical Gardens.

Each of the three award categories honors a distinctly different type of environmental work and the recipients of the three awards will receive cash prizes for their contribution and efforts towards the community.

• The Environmental Achievement of the Year award honors an individual or group that has made the most important environmental contribution to the Central Coast in the past year.
• The Sustained Environmental Contribution award gives $2,000 in recognition of the environmental efforts of a group or individual over a period of time.
• The Environmental Initiative award is given to those making a unique environmental contribution to the community. The winner of this award receives $1,000 for their work.

This year, the award ceremony will take place on June 1 at the SLO Botanical Gardens and will feature keynote speaker Michael Sutton. Sutton is the Vice President of the Monterey Bay Aquarium and the Director of the Center for the Future of Oceans.    8:00 PM  -  10:30 PM Cowboy Envy
    Contact: Jamie Maraviglia   805-489-4196   jamie@clarkcenter.org
Cowboy Envy, in the tradition of the original singing cowboy, performs Western music from the thirties and forties. Drawing upon the repertoires of such artists as Roy Rogers, Sons of the Pioneers, Gene Autry, and others, each member of Cowboy Envy brings a variety of influences to the presentation of this music. Their voices blend as beautifully as the Andrews sisters, but their sound is bolstered by a strong strumming guitar and bass and punctuated by a healthy dose of rollicking abandon and humor in the spirit of Riders in the Sky. Everybody can use a little cowboy music -- come yippy-yi your troubles away with Cowboy Envy at the Clark Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets range from $28-$35 and can be purchased by calling 489-9444 or by visiting www.clarkcenter.org.
