THE ART OF DR. SEUSS: Including Rare Works
The Vault Gallery of CAMBRIA presents “The Art of Dr. Seuss - A
Retrospective and National Exhibition”. Celebrating the 100th birthday
of Theodor Seuss Geisel (Dr. Seuss), this exhibit chronicles his life
and career with a focus on the common artistic links throughout his
nearly 70 years of creativity.
The exhibition begins with his early drawings in Life Magazine,
includes his editorial, advertising, military, and book illustrations,
and finally, his Secret Art collection with rare and never-before-seen
art from the 1920's to 1990's.
The curator, William W. Dreyer, will be present in the Gallery the
opening day of the exhibit to provide insights into Geisel’s artistic
life, his unique vision and his impact on American culture.
Theodor Seuss Geisel (American, 1904–1991) a.k.a. Dr. Seuss, began his
career as a little known editorial cartoonist in the 1920’s. He is
currently best known as one of the most beloved and bestselling
children's authors of all time, having written and illustrated classics
such as Green Eggs and Ham and How The Grinch Stole Christmas! Geisel
was also a political cartoonist for PM magazine during World War II, as
well as a contributing illustrator for Vanity Fair and Life. He had a
long, successful advertising career, won an Academy Award for his
wartime documentaries, and his animated short film, “Gerald McBoing
Boing.” Today his paintings hang in fine art galleries. He created 44
children’s books, over 400 World War II political cartoons, hundreds of
advertisements, and countless editorials filled with wonderfully
inventive animals, characters and clever humor. Geisel single-handedly
forged a new genre of art that falls somewhere between the Surrealist
Surrealist Movement of the early 20th Century and the inspired nonsense
of a child’s classroom doodles. 2289 Main Street, Open 7 days 10:30 TO 5:30 Saturday until 9:00 pm Partial proceeds benefit the SLO Childrens Museum

Linnaea’s Café, at 1110 Garden Street in San Luis Obispo, performance
artist, Gale McNeeley presents “Archy, the poetic cockroach” and
“Mehitabel, the toujours gai alley cat” Sunday nights, October 1st and

Mehitabel, the morally careless cat, first came to life in the
editorial column of the great Don Marquis back in 1916. Their wit and

in words and music, through the performance magic of Gale McNeeley.
“This is adult fare with an innocent heart.”
Mr. McNeeley is an actor, singer, dancer and clown, whose career has
spanned 36 years from Broadway to circus. He has been seen locally at
PCPA Theaterfest and, most recently, in his original political satires,
“The Wizard of What?” and “Pope: The Musical.” Betty Faas accompanies
Gale on the piano. Gale’s show is mentioned in the new Penguin Classic
release, “The Annotated Archy & Mehitabel.” He will perform his

Oct 5 – Nov 11
The Shuffle of Things: Recent Works by Mary Price will be on show from
October 5 through November 11 at the AFS Gallery, 302 E. Cota Street in
downtown Santa Barbara. An artist's reception, free to the public will
take place on October 13, from 5 until 7 PM. For more information call
805-884-0459 Ms. Price brings together collage and assemblage
techniques in a series of works reminiscent of her piece that was
awarded first prize in the recent annual show at the AFS Gallery. For
each of the wall pieces she creates an individualized plywood base, on
which she scatters intricately prepared shards of tile and glass,
fragments of old photos, illustrations and text, and occasionally
natural elements such as rocks, twigs, feathers and bones. The
interplay of scattered fragments, given structure by the base, express
energy and rhythm, tempting the eye again and again with telescoping
and panning effects. So bring your wide-angle zoom lens and don’t just
stand there: play the angles and have fun with this award-winning yet
not-at-all-stuffy art. The AFS Gallery is open Tuesday through
Saturday, from 10 to 2 PM, and on Thursday from 10 until 5 PM.
Admission is free. An artist's reception, free to the public will take

Morro Coast Audubon Society New office and Open House on October 13:
All are invited to an Open House / Celebration on Friday October 13
from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. with music, local photography, and refreshments
at 601 Embarcadero, Morro Bay (upstairs in the Marina Square Building
at Marina Street). Morro Coast, the SLO County Chapter of the Audubon
Society, has landed a new office and outreach center in Morro Bay. This
is the 40th Anniversary of the Morro Coast Audubon Society and the
Chapter recently merged with the North Cuesta Chapter. Due in part to
the merger, the membership has grown by 25 percent in the past year.
With local membership now close to 800, the MCAS has outgrown the post
office box and hopes the new office will provide a meeting place and
educational center for birders and for conservation efforts. The
Chapter welcomes new members and needs volunteers to help with
hospitality, education, membership, and field work. For further
information visit www.morrocoastaudubon.org or call 528-4587 or
